Although precise regulation of the crystalline structures of metal oxides is an effective method to improve their antibacterial activities, the corresponding mechanisms involved in this process are still unclear. In this study, three kinds of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) samples with different structures of cubes, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra (c-Cu2O, o-Cu2O, and r-Cu2O) have been successfully synthesized and their antibacterial activities are compared. The antibacterial activities follow the order of r-Cu2O > o-Cu2O > c-Cu2O, revealing the significant dependence of the antibacterial activities on the crystalline structures of Cu2O. Quenching experiments, as well as the NBT and DPD experiments indicate that ≡CuII─OO• superoxo and ≡CuII─OOH peroxo, instead of •OH, O2•–, and H2O2, are the primary oxidizing species in the oxidative damage to E. coli. Raman analysis further confirms the presence of both ≡CuII─OO• superoxo and ≡CuII─OOH peroxo on the surface of r-Cu2O. On the other hand, the NCP experiment reveals that Cu+, instead of Cu2+, also contributes to the antibacterial process. This study provides new insight into the antibacterial mechanisms of Cu2O.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to high value-added products, such as ethylene (C2H4), offers a promising approach to achieve carbon neutrality. Although recent studies have reported that a tandem catalyst (for example, Cu–Ag systems) exhibits advantage in C2H4 production, its practical application is largely inhibited by the following: (1) a traditional tandem catalyst cannot effectively stabilize the *CO intermediate, resulting in sluggish C–C coupling, and (2) inadequate H2O activation ability hinders the hydrogenation of intermediates. To break through the above bottleneck, herein, palladium (Pd) was introduced into Cu2O–Ag, a typical conventional tandem catalyst, to construct a Cu2O–Pd–Ag ternary catalyst. Extensive experiment and density functional theory calculation prove that Pd can efficiently stabilize the *CO intermediate and promote the H2O activation, which contributes to the C–C coupling and intermediate hydrogenation, the key steps in the conversion of CO2 to C2H4. Beneficial to the efficient synergy of Cu2O, Pd, and Ag, the optimal Cu2O–Pd–Ag ternary catalyst achieves CO2RR toward C2H4 with a faradaic efficiency of 63.2% at −1.2 VRHE, which is higher than that achieved by Cu2O–Ag and most of other reported catalysts. This work is a fruitful exploration of a rare ternary catalyst, providing a new route for constructing an efficient CO2RR electrocatalyst.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with surface-loaded Cu particles (scCu-rGO) was prepared by supercritical CO 2 deposition, and Cu matrix composites with scCu-rGO as a reinforcement (scCu-rGO/Cu composites) were successfully prepared by ball milling for different times and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The scCu-rGO/Cu composites prepared with a ball milling time of 20 h exhibited high electrical conductivity (96.3 % IACS), tensile strength (240 MPa), and elongation (37 %). The outstanding properties are mainly ascribed to the uniform distribution of rGO by the ball milling process and rGO promoted by loading Cu particles onto its surface through supercritical deposition, which led to an interfacial reaction between rGO and Cu, resulting in the formation of a Cu 2 O transition layer with a load-transferring effect that enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. Based on the experimental results, the strength of scCu-rGO/Cu composites is mainly enhanced by synergistic strengthening through grain refinement, Orowan looping and load transfer strengthening. This study demonstrates that the use of supercritical deposition to construct Cu 2 O transition layers can result in a strength-plasticity and high electrical conductivity match in scCu-rGO/Cu composites. The findings presented here offer new insights for innovative design of Cu matrix composites for advanced engineering applications by using supercritical deposition.

It was of great significance to improve the performance of catalysts in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for water pollution control. Herein, Cu 2 O-based catalysts with different exposed facets were synthesized by a feasible method, and later employed for activating PMS to conduct the degradation tests of tetracycline (TC). With the increase of exposed (1 0 0) facet, the specific surface area of Cu 2 O was improved and the interface charge transfer resistance was reduced. More interestingly, benefiting from the exposure of (1 0 0) facet, the electron-donating ability of Cu 2 O was boosted, and the adsorption energy of PMS over Cu 2 O was also reduced, thereby creating favorable conditions for PMS activation. As guessed, Cu 2 O-1 with (1 0 0) facet can quickly activate PMS to achieve the effective degradation of TC, and the highest removal efficiency of TC over Cu 2 O-1 can be up to 97.56 % within 15 min. Furthermore, Cu 2 O-1 with good anti-interference showed satisfactory reusability, and the degradation intermediates of TC were the low toxic or nontoxic. In the Cu 2 O-1/PMS system, various reactive oxygen species were detected, including SO 4 •– , OH • , O 2 •– and 1 O 2 , and wherein the contribution of 1 O 2 to TC degradation was the greatest. In short, current work shared some valuable insights into persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes.

Combining with various antibacterial mechanisms is the preferred strategy to fabricate coatings with effective antibacterial performance. Herein, Cu 2 O nanoparticles and dimethyloctadecyl [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ammonium chloride, a kind of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS), were simultaneously incorporated into a moisture-curable acrylic resin in order to achieve both contact-killing and release-killing abilities for antibacterial coatings. The surface morphology, surface composition and basic properties of the coatings were thoroughly characterized. The antibacterial performance of the coatings was determined by in-vitro bacteriostatic test. Under the constant total mass fraction of antibacterial agents, both Cu 2 O and QAS content possessed the highest value on the coating surface at Cu 2 O/QAS mass ratio of 1:1, and correspondingly, the coatings reached sterilizing rate above 99 % against both E. coli and S. loihica , indicating the existence of synergistic effect between Cu 2 O and QAS. The synergistic antibacterial mechanism of the coatings involved two aspects. Firstly, the combination of contact-killing and release-killing biocides resulted in high bactericidal and antibiofilm activity against different bacteria. Further, the grafting of QAS molecules on the surface of Cu 2 O particles brought about the spontaneous migration of nanoparticles to the coating surface. The interaction between Cu 2 O and QAS also inhibited the phase separation of QAS and prolonged the release of Cu 2+ at the same time. The coatings, therefore, exhibited stable antibacterial performance at varied service conditions.

Photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as a pivotal strategy to tackle global energy crises and environmental degradation by producing clean hydrogen. In this study, a novel Cu 2 O/CuO/C composite photocatalyst was prepared from cupric nitrate trihydrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid via the two-step solvothermal-calcination method as the photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. Advanced characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), transient photocurrent responses, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and Mott-Schottky test, confirmed the composite's excellent visible and near-infrared light absorption and Z-scheme heterojunction architecture. Its remarkable performance originates from the effective p-n heterojunction formed between Cu 2 O and CuO. Upon a 300 W xenon lamp (350 < λ < 780 nm) illumination, photogenerated electrons and holes are produced in Cu 2 O and CuO, respectively. Electrons from the conduction band (CB) of CuO migrate to the valence band (VB) of Cu 2 O, recombining with holes. This mechanism not only enhances charge separation and extends carrier lifetime but also preserves the strong reducing capability of Cu 2 O, significantly boosting photocatalytic activity. The composite achieved a hydrogen production rate of 511.07 μmol/(g h). Notably, it retained stable performance over three consecutive cycles without significant activity loss, demonstrating robust durability. These findings highlight the potential of Cu 2 O/CuO/C Z-scheme heterojunctions as efficient, stable photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen evolution.

Electro-catalytic conversion of nitrate (NO 3 - ) to ammonia (NH 3 ) via the Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia (NORA) process represents a promising strategy for both ammonia synthesis and environmental remediation. Despite its potential, the efficiency of low-concentration NORA is often hindered by mass transfer limitations, competing byproducts (N 2 and NO 2 - ), and side reactions such as hydrogen evolution . This study introduces a novel pulsed electro-synthesis technique that alternates the potential to periodically accumulate and transform NO 2 - intermediates near a Cu2O@Pd electrode, enhancing the NORA process. Compared with that under potentiostatic conditions, the Cu 2 O@Pd electrodes exhibited a higher NORA activity under the optimized pulsed condition, where a NH 3 -N Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 81.2%, a yield rate of 1.08 mg h -1 cm -2 and a selectivity efficiency (SE) of 81.5%, were achieved. In-situ characterization revealed an enhancement mechanism characterized by optimized adsorption of the key *NO intermediate, followed by the hydrogenation path “*N → *NH → *NH 2 → *NH 3 ”. Further investigations indicated the electro-catalytic synergies between Pd sites and Cu species, where the Pd atoms were the reaction sites for the H adsorption while the Cu species were responsible for the NO 3 - activation. This research offers a novel insight into a method of enhancing low-concentration NORA.

Improving the performance of antifouling coating under illumination-involved harsh environments is of prime scientific and engineering importance. However, it still remains a big challenge due to the strong photo-corrosion character of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) that works as the most widely-used primary antifoulant. To address this issue, a novel heterojunction of Cu 2 O@TiO 2 was constructed by in situ adsorption-hydrolysis approach. The as-designed heterojunction structure endows superior photo-stability with Cu 2 O@TiO 2 , which has been proven to proceed via S-scheme mechanism by a set of complementary characterizations including in situ XPS and EPR. As anticipated, the resulted Cu 2 O@TiO 2 coating manifests excellent stability and antifouling performance under illumination-involved mimetic service conditions such as dry-dock and waterline environments, as substantiated by the bioassays and marine field trials. A dual-target photo-synergized enhancing mechanism for the S-scheme Cu 2 O@TiO 2 could be deduced as to: (i) inhibit the accumulation of holes on Cu 2 O to exert a stabilization effect; (ii) boost the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, including HO /O 2 − ) to enhance the antifouling property. The methodology provides a proof-of-concept design to fabricate high photo-stable Cu 2 O-based antifoulant materials, with the gain in understanding the intrinsic failure principle of coatings and the biocidal mechanism of cuprous oxide toward marine application.

The practical implementation of electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) for ammonia synthesis is critically hindered by its inherent sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, which leads to unpredictable selectivity shifts among NO 3 RR, nitrite reduction reaction (NO 2 RR), and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Using Cu 2 O as a model catalyst, the temperature-dependent competition among different pathways within the 10–40 °C range was elucidated. An atomically dispersed Co-doped Cu 2 O catalyst (Co-Cu 2 O) was then designed to function as a thermal-adaptive platform. Mechanistic studies reveal that the atomically dispersed Co sites not only enhance the intrinsic hydrogenation capability but also dynamically stabilize key N-H intermediates (*NOH, *NH 2 , and *NH 3 ) against temperature variations. This synergistic effect stabilizes the reaction pathway toward NH 3 , enabling robust and selective ammonia production under thermal perturbations. As a result, the Co-Cu 2 O catalyst maintains a Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH 3 above 90 % across the entire 10–40 °C temperature window and achieves a remarkable NH 3 production rate of 53.79 mg h −1 mg cat −1 at 40 °C. This work provides fundamental insights into temperature-mediated catalysis and establishes an effective design strategy for wide-temperature electrocatalysts.

Biomass materials as an abundant renewable resource could replace traditional fossil fuels and non-renewable materials, providing a new solution to achieve sustainable development. In this paper, Ce-modified Co(OH) 2 /Cu 2 O composite catalysts were prepared by an electrodeposition method, and the CoOOH/CuOOH dual active sites were successfully obtained through an electrochemical reconfiguration strategy, and the experimental results showed that the incorporation of Ce induced the formation of high-valent Co and Cu species, which improved the activity of electrocatalytic HMF oxidation. At 0.55 V vs Hg/HgO, the HMF conversion reached 100%, the FDCA yield was 95.04% and the Faraday efficiency was up to 98.47%. These results confirm the effectiveness of Ce-based non-precious metal catalysts in electrochemical reconstruction strategies and demonstrate their potential application in the high-value conversion of biomass derivatives. This finding not only provides a solid research basis for the development of highly efficient catalysts, but is also expected to promote the development of related technological fields.

In this paper, we have developed a fast and low-cost label-free electrochemical immunosensor for detection of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG). The proposed sensor is based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with Cu@Cu 2 O nanoparticles anchored B, N co-doped porous carbon (BNPC) composite. The copper-derived nanoparticles with multiple valence states undergo dramatic changes in surface areas, conductivity, and actives sites due to their combination with BNPC, resulting in enhanced electrochemical performance. In the amperometric immunoassay, the immune complex of antigen and antibody inhibits the transfer of electrons on the electrode interface, causing a change in the current. Thus the quantitative detection of LGG is achieved. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was performed at a LGG concentration of 10 2 to 10 8 colony-forming units CFU mL −1 . The immunosensor showed a good linear relationship between the decrease in peak current and the concentration of LGG ( R 2 = 0.9934), with a short detection time and a detection limit of 12 CFU mL −1 . In short, we have developed a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the specific detection of LGG using the current-mode, label-free immunoassay method evaluated in this study, providing a reliable mean for quantifying probiotics.

Z-scheme Cu 2 O-(rGO-TiO 2 ) photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a simple three-step approach for 2,2′,4,4′-tretrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) reductive removal under simulated solar irradiation. Unlike the traditional heterojunction , the addition of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) enhanced the redox ability of Cu 2 O-TiO 2 by increasing charge transfer. When modifying Cu 2 O films by adding 1% rGO and coating with 70% TiO 2 , the resulting Cu 2 O-(rGO-TiO 2 ) exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for BDE47 removal. The charge transfers of Cu 2 O-(rGO-TiO 2 ) were proven to follow a Z-scheme pathway through the electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. The degradation pathways of BDE47 were elucidated by identifying intermediate products via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography (GC). Photo-electrons (e − ) generated from the conduction band of Cu 2 O and hydrogen protons (H 0 ) reduced from H + in water were the main contributing elements for the removal of BDE47, which response to the ortho and para debromination . Ortho-Br of BDE47 was attacked by e − and BDE28 was the dominant debromination product on the first stage. Then e − and H 0 attacked ortho-Br and para-Br of BDE28 to form BDE15 and BDE8, respectively. The concentration of BDE8 was higher than that of BDE15, suggesting that H 0 played the most important role on the second debromination stage. An effective Cu 2 O-(rGO-TiO 2 )-based Z-scheme system for BDE47 debromination was proposed in this study, which may contribute to the development of novel green technologies.
