CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by three different methods and their activities for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were investigated. As can be seen from the experimental results, the catalyst prepared by the single-step sol–gel (SG) method showed the best SCR activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O. In order to investigate the relationship between the preparation method and the performance of SCR catalysts, the catalysts were characterized by using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed reduction with hydrogen, temperature programmed desorption with ammonia, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques. It was found that the excellent performance of CeO2–CuO/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the single-step SG method should be resulted from its large surface area, low crystallinity, high oxygen storage capacity, high NH3 adsorption capacity, high concentration of surface chemisorbed oxygen, weak sulphation process and weak water absorption.

Hollow carbon–nitrogen nanoreactors constitute a class of porous materials that have widespread application owing to their large inner cavities, low densities, core–shell interfaces, and enrichment effects. Direct carbonization of precursors is the simplest and most economical method to prepare porous carbon–nitrogen materials; however, this method requires high temperatures, thus yielding nonoxide structures. In this study, CuO–ZnO@CN (CN: carbon–nitrogen layers) is prepared using the two-step heating of zeolitic imidazolium skeleton-8 (ZIF-8) coated with CuO–ZnO precursors. During carbonization, the ZIF-8 nanoparticles are converted into carbon–nitrogen layers at high temperatures. Next, a heating process based on the autocatalytic effect of Cu can be used to etch the hollow structure prepared by the carbon–nitrogen layers. The CuO–ZnO@CN hollow composites fabricated using this method exhibit excellent catalytic properties for the ethynylation of formaldehyde. The proposed strategy can be used to develop techniques for syntheses of readily reducible carbon oxide claddings and their composites.

Electrochemically reducing CO2 (CO2RR) to high-value chemical products is recognized as a promising route to simultaneously reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and carbon emission. The fabrication of syngas with an appropriate H2/CO ratio by CO2RR has been widely studied, but the dynamic evolution of the catalyst is still ambiguous. Herein, the reconstruction of CuO/SnO2 nanosheets (NSs) with a heterojunction structure in the CO2RR process was reported by an in situ X-ray diffractometer technique. The products of the CO2RR on the optimized CuO/SnO2 NSs are CO and H2, achieving a nearly 100% total Faraday efficiency. Moreover, the resulting syngas is maintained at a constant 2:1 ratio of H2/CO over a wide potential of −0.8 to −1.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Importantly, the detailed characterizations show that Cu2+ is reduced to Cu during the CO2RR process, while the valence state of Sn remains stable. This study presents strong experimental support for the dynamic evolution process of electrocatalysts in other energy conversion fields.

Harnessing inherent organic pollutants in wastewater to drive self-accelerated Fenton-like degradation establishes a sustainable water purification paradigm, wherein the central challenge centers on strategically regulating catalyst-pollutant interaction to optimize phenoxyl radical formation and leverage its inherent catalytic synergy. Here, we demonstrate that a CuO-CeO 2 heterostructure combining Cu(II) active centers with Ce(IV) electron reservoirs achieves unprecedented enhancement in phenoxyl radical generation efficiency. This breakthrough arises from two synergistical mechanisms: strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) elevates the d -band center of Cu to thermodynamically favor spontaneous electron abstraction from pollutants, while the electron buffering capability of CeO 2 accelerates the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycle for efficient active site regeneration. The optimized CuO-CeO 2 /persulfate (PDS) system exhibits 19.2-fold enhanced kinetic constant ( k obs ) for p -chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation compared to the CuO/PDS counterpart, alongside remarkable pH versatility across 3.5-10. Crucially, the phenoxyl radical-mediated oxidation demonstrates exceptional operational stability with consistent 100% 4-CP removal over eight consecutive cycles, contrasting sharply with the 56.3% efficiency decline observed in CuO. This work establishes a strategic framework for advancing phenoxyl radical-mediated AOPs (PR-AOPs) toward sustainable water purification technologies.

In this study, CuO nanosheet composites synergistically modified with graphene oxide (GO) and water bath treatment were prepared via a hydrothermal method, which were then explored for the acetylacetone gas sensing capabilities. The response of the CuO/GO-0.4 (70 °C) to 100 ppm acetylacetone is 39.29 at 175 °C, which is 16 times greater than pure CuO, and it achieves a rapid response time of 24 s and shortens the recovery time to 38 s. Moreover, the CuO/GO-0.4 (70 °C) sensor displays remarkable selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability over a 28-day period. The electronic band structure and density of states for both CuO and CuO/GO were calculated by first-principles calculation. An in-depth discussion of the gas-sensing mechanism towards acetylacetone was provided, highlighting the role of graphene oxide in enhancing charge carrier transport and the increased concentration of oxygen vacancy (O v ) defects in the composite material. This study not only advances the field of gas sensors but also offers a promising route for detecting acetylacetone, which is critical in various industrial and environmental applications.

The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present a novel approach combining heterojunction and structural engineering to enhance HER performance. A NiO/Ni layer with a heterogeneous structure is grown on CuO nanorod arrays supported by copper foam. This 3D nanostructure increases the density of active sites, improves mass and electron transport, and accelerates HER kinetics. The rough surface also facilitates rapid bubble release, enhancing catalyst stability under high currents. As a result, the CuO@NiO/Ni catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance, with overpotentials of 86.5 and 198.8 mV at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Additionally, a two-electrode electrolytic cell using CuO@NiO/Ni and NiFe LDH achieves 500 mA cm −2 at only 1.64 V and maintains excellent stability over 100 h. These findings highlight the potential of CuO@NiO/Ni as a highly efficient, stable catalyst for industrial-scale water electrolysis, and provide a promising approach to addressing the challenges of non-precious metal-based HER catalysts in industrial settings.

As an effective strategy to turn waste into treasure, electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) producing value-added chemicals such as HCOOH attracts unremitting interest. However, the practical applications are limited by poor activity and selectivity, the key is to develop economical-efficient catalysts. Herein, gradient-doped Sn on the CuO surface (Sn-CuO) was developed for eCO 2 RR in an H-cell. Typically, the main reaction pathway of *OCHO → HCOOH was obtained via in situ experiments and further verified by theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the lowest Δ G *OCHO and Δ G *OCHO − Δ G *H as well as the highest Δ G *COOH enlist Sn-CuO with sufficient proton to produce HCOOH while inhibiting CO and H 2 by-products. Finally, the synthesized Sn-CuO delivers a maximum partial current density (23.6 mA cm −2 ) at −1.3 V REH and Faradic efficiency (91.5 %) at −1.2 V RHE for HCOOH, indicating excellent activity and selectivity.

Electrochemical C-N coupling reaction, transforming CO 2 and its derivatives (e.g., CH 3 OH, HCOOH) into highly-value-added organic nitrogenous compounds under ambient conditions, is considered as a promising way to reduce the current reliance of chemical production on fossil fuels. Herein, we synthesized CuO/In 2 O 3 hollow cubes for electrochemical synthesis of formamide from CH 3 OH and aqueous ammonia, achieving a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of formamide of as high as 49.05 % (43.06 ± 5.94 % on average), and a yield rate up to 8.43 ± 1.54 g h −1 mg cat −1 at a current density of 120 mA cm −2 , significantly higher than those of the reported catalysts. In-situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculations disclose that *CHO and *NH 2 intermediates are preferentially adsorbed on Cu and In sites, respectively. Electrons transfer between In and Cu via an In-O-Cu bridge, and the synergistic effects between In and Cu promotes the spontaneous coupling between *CHO and *NH 2 intermediates, thus facilitating the formation of C-N bond, and resulting in enhanced activity and selectivity in formamide synthesis. Using ethanol and propanol as C sources, acetamide and propionamide were obtained, respectively, demonstrating the generality of the as-synthesized catalyst. This work provides an effective strategy of constructing synergetic dual active sites to elevate the catalyst performance on amides electrosynthesis.

In this study, a novel ceramic membrane integrating filtration and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was fabricated by loading the compound catalyst (CuO@ATT/AC) into the membrane channels. The integrated ceramic membrane (IM-CuO@ATT/AC) exhibited remarkable efficiency for PMS activation and was applied to the removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ), demonstrating significant performance under various operational conditions. Through the utilization of free radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, it had been conclusively demonstrated that the predominant reactive species in the IM-CuO@ATT/AC/PMS system were singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and Cu(III). And the insights into a potential degradation pathway for SDZ was further provided. The IM-CuO@ATT/AC also exhibited enhanced antifouling performance when tested with real water in the presence of PMS. The present study introduces a new strategy to facilitate the advancement of integrated ceramic membrane processes and the utilization of catalytic membrane filtration technology.

CuO is a typical p-type semiconductor with the advantage of narrow bandgap, making it a gas sensing material for detecting CO gas at lower operating temperatures. However, the poor response value limits its application. As a classical wide-band gap n-type gas sensing metal oxide semiconductor, TiO 2 has the advantages of high response to CO. However, high operating temperature becomes the big obstacle to overcome. Therefore, sensitive CO detection at lower temperature will be achieved by integration of CuO with TiO 2 . In this paper, in-situ two step hydrothermal method was used to prepare CuO/TiO 2 vertical bilayer nanorod arrays grown in situ. The gas sensing results show that the response value of the CuO/TiO 2 vertical bilayer nanorod arrays is 6.1 times (14.9, 300 ppm) higher than that of single CuO nanotentacle arrays (2.1, 300 ppm), and the operating temperature is reduced to 100 °C compared with pure TiO 2 nanorod arrays (360 °C). This strategy provides a new idea for the fabrication of CO gas sensors with high response and low operating temperature.

Carbon nitride (CN)-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are a research hotspot for photocatalytic water splitting due to their efficient charge separation capability. This study successfully constructed a CuO/CN S-scheme heterojunction via a two-step calcination method and systematically investigated the effects of CuO content and calcination temperature on the material properties. Characterization results revealed that CuO nanoparticles were uniformly loaded onto CN nanosheets. 0.28 %CuO/CN exhibited the largest specific surface area and the narrowest bandgap. Synergistic nitrogen vacancies significantly enhanced charge carrier separation efficiency. Under 100 W LED light irradiation, the photocatalytic performance showed that 0.28 %CuO/CN calcined at 550 °C under air atmosphere achieved an H 2 evolution rate of 10.4 mmol h −1 g −1 and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 11.5 %, which is 9.0 times higher than that of pure CN. Furthermore, the activity decreased by only 3.4 % after 4 cycles. Mechanistic studies confirmed by in-situ EPR and band structure analysis, demonstrated that the built-in electric field drives electrons to follow an S-scheme migration path. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient and stable defect-engineered S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) driven by the renewable energy represents an effective approach to mitigate atmospheric CO 2 concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality. Zinc (Zn) and its oxides, being among the most abundant metal materials, are frequently employed in the generation of CO by ECO 2 R. Cooper and its oxides have the moderate *CO affinity which enables the C-C coupling reaction to produce the higher value C2+ products. In this work, we have developed the novel CuO/ZnO p-n heterojunction tandem catalyst using a straightforward solvothermal method. By optimizing the content of CuO/ZnO heterojunction, a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 37% for C 2 H 4 can be achieved in a gas diffusion flow cell, which is one of the highest among the Cu-Zn-based catalysts for ECO 2 R. Mechanism investigations illuminate that CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface enhances the adsorption of *CO 2 – intermediates facilitating the formation of *CO intermediates than pristine CuO, meanwhile weakens the adsorption of *H impeding the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Therefore, the spillover of CO from ZnO to CuO sites and the electrons rebalance on CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface promote the C-C coupling reaction rates, thus greatly enhances the selectivity for C 2 H 4 .
