A metal oxide-based E-nose employing backpropagation artificial neural network for the quantitative recognition of common fuel gases

Wenbin Li,Gaocan Qi,Haihui Ding,Weibin Yan,Xijun Liu,Zhihao Yuan

The safe use of fuel gases in industrial production and daily life requires prompt and accurate detection of their concentrations in the environment. However, due to the strong reducing properties of the flammable gases used as fuel, traditional chemoresistive gas sensors face challenges in simultaneously detecting multiple flammable gases. To address this issue, we have developed a metal oxide-based electronic nose capable of detecting common fuel gases, including CH 4 , H 2 , and CO. By controlling the composition and structure of metal oxides, as well as introducing noble metal modifications, we optimized the response differences of these gas sensitive materials to CH 4 , H 2 , and CO. Four sensitive materials were selected from 8 candidates using principal component analysis to construct gas sensor array on a compact four-channel circuit board. The response sensitivities from the sensor array to various concentrations of CH 4 , H 2 , CO, and their mixtures were utilized to train a backpropagation artificial neural network. A new component-identification outlet layer was integrated with the traditional concentration-recognition to improve the training speed and enable simultaneous identification of gas components and concentrations. Through combined material optimization and dual-output training, the backpropagation artificial neural network achieved 90% training accuracy within just 50 iterations, with both sparse cross-entropy loss and mean squared error reduced below 0.005 after 300 training epochs. The resulting E -nose can accurately identify gas components and determine their concentrations in single-, binary-, and ternary-component mixtures of CH 4 , H 2 , and CO, with detection accuracies exceeding 91%. This study provides a practical approach for E -nose construction, enabling reliable monitoring of flammable gases.

Enhanced phenanthrene degradation by a synthetically engineered E. coli consortium utilizing the SCRaMbLE for the evolution of key genes

Yibin Yang,Rui Chen,Zhiqiang Zhang,Yuke Qin,Attiqa Parveen,He Bai,Xiaoqiang Jia

Phenanthrene, a pervasive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), poses significant environmental and health risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation. This study presents the development of a synthetic bacterial consortium comprising three engineered Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) strains, each harboring distinct catabolic modules encoded by pET-28(a) plasmids for the complete mineralization of phenanthrene. The consortium was engineered by integrating 17 genes critical for phenanthrene degradation, organized into three distinct modules that harness the collective metabolic potential of separate strains to enhance the degradation process. Each module was tailored to a specific phase of phenanthrene catabolism, ensuring the coordinated and efficient breakdown of the pollutant. Following the identification of rate-limiting enzymes within the up- and downstream degradation modules, the eight corresponding genes were subjected to laboratory evolution using the SCRaMbLE method to bolster the degradation capabilities of the strains. The consortium was then tested in a minimal salt medium (MSM) containing 100 mg/L phenanthrene. Following their evolution, the two SCRaMbLE strains E. coli SCRPHE033 and E. coli SCRKA065 exhibited enhanced degradation rates of 11.5 and 25.18 % for their respective substrates. Finally, the comprehensive phenanthrene degradation system, which includes the two SCRaMbLE strains and E. coli CRSA, was subjected to comprehensive optimization, after which it achieved a significant degradation efficiency of 84.33 % for 100 mg/L phenanthrene within a 120-hour timeframe. This research demonstrates the potential of synthetic biology in constructing microbial consortia for environmental bioremediation based on the SCRaMbLE method, offering a promising strategy for mitigating PAH pollution.

Integration of E-nose, volatilomic profiling, and transcriptomics reveals the mechanisms aroma formation during the ripening process of blueberries

Jiaying Jin,Xiaogang Wang,Yu Zhang,Liangjie Ba,Su Xu,Lingshuai Meng,Xiaohong Kou,Sen Cao

Blueberry aroma is a key determinant of fruit quality and market value. However, the mechanisms underlying its formation during ripening remain poorly understood. This study utilized the highbush blueberry cultivar ‘ Legacy ’ and employed an integrated approach combining E -nose, GC–MS, GC-IMS, and transcriptomics to systematically analyze the formation and changes in VOCs as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms throughout fruit ripening. The results revealed that during the entire fruit ripening process, VOCs were predominantly composed of alcohols, aldehydes, and terpenoids. Key compounds, including hexanol, linalool and geraniol, progressively accumulated. Furthermore, the combination of GC–MS and GC-IMS provided a more comprehensive profile of the volatile composition in blueberry fruit. Transcriptomic analysis further elucidated its metabolic regulatory mechanisms: 1) Terpenoid biosynthesis is co-regulated by the MAV and MEP pathways, with the MEP pathway playing a dominant role in monoterpene biosynthesis; 2) Fatty acid metabolism generates C6 aldehydes via LOX2S, while upregulation of ADH gene expression significantly enhances the conversion of aldehydes to alcohols. This study provides valuable theoretical foundations for flavor development during blueberry ripening.

Bio-inspired natural fibers-derived e-skin equipped with intelligent drug-release system for advanced robustly-integrated melanoma therapy

Liu Xinhua,Fei Yifan,Cui Boqiang,Chen Xing,Zhang Jiamin,Yue Ouyang,Bai Zhongxue,Wen Ling,Jiang Huie

Malignant melanoma, a highly aggressive malignancy, necessitates innovative therapeutic strategies integrating biomaterial innovation with multimodal treatment modalities. Herein, we report the development of a collagen-derived bioelectronic skin (c-ADM) nanoengineered via interfacial assembly of porcine acellular dermal matrix (ADM)—a natural collagen-rich scaffold—with conductive poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS-NPs). This hybrid system synergizes photothermal ablation, stimuli-responsive drug delivery, and electrostimulation (ES) for comprehensive postoperative melanoma management and tissue regeneration. The c-ADM platform exhibits superior mechanical robustness, enzymatic resistance, and biocompatibility, enabling real-time motion monitoring while maintaining structural integrity in dynamic physiological environments. Leveraging the photothermal efficiency of CuS-NPs, localized hyperthermia (ΔT > 40 °C) under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation induces irreversible melanoma cell apoptosis. Concurrently, laser-triggered temperature-responsive drug release enables synchronized photothermal-chemotherapy, with sustained doxorubicin release profiles at tumor sites. Notably, pH-responsive Cu 2 ⁺ liberation from CuS-NPs facilitates intelligent functional switching: bactericidal activity at tumor microenvironment pH (5.0–6.0) and pro-regenerative effects under physiological pH (7.4) for wound healing. In vitro/in vivo assessments confirm c-ADM’s dual therapeutic efficacy including ES-enhanced cancer cell death via mitochondrial dysfunction and accelerated full-thickness skin regeneration through collagen remodeling and angiogenesis modulation. This work establishes a collagen-based bioelectronic scaffold for personalized oncological care, integrating intraoperative tumor eradication, postoperative surveillance, and adaptive tissue reconstruction. Multifunctional antifreeze e-skin with self-healing and recyclability via cellulose nanocrystals-assisted poly(thioctic acid)-iron coordination networks

Aiping Zhan,Hou-Yong Yu

Human skin exhibits remarkable self-healing and responsiveness, attributed to dynamic disulfide (S S) bonds. However, traditional elastomer polymers often suffer from poor mechanical performance, low stability, and weak signal-capture capabilities due to metastability and insufficient interchain interactions. To overcome these limitations, a novel strategy combining inverse vulcanization and iron(III)-carboxylate coordination was proposed to construct a multifunctional, recyclable elastomer named PTCFe. In this system, thioctic acid (TA) undergoes inverse vulcanization with maleic acid-modified cellulose nanocrystals (MACNC), forming a robust dynamic network. Subsequently, ferric chloride (FeCl₃) induces multivalent Fe 3+ –carboxylate coordination, further reinforcing the polymer matrix. The presence of abundant hydrogen bonds and dynamic S S linkages synergistically enhance interchain interactions. As a result, PTCFe demonstrates high optical transparency (>90 %), exceptional stretchability (up to 1200 %), and strong adhesion (1368.56–1938.76 KPa) to diverse surfaces. It also exhibits outstanding self-healing efficiency (up to 89.6 %) and skin-friendly properties, maintaining stable signal detection during strenuous activities such as mountaineering, even under subzero conditions. Moreover, the elastomer is fully recyclable by thermal remelting and shows rapid biodegradability in soil. The PTCFe with above properties as a promising platform for next-generation wearable sensors and electronic skin (e-skin) technologies.

Synergistic rGO/MoS2 E-Shaped Evaporators: Efficient Solar Desalination and Water Purification via Enhanced Photothermal Conversion and Structural Optimization

Pengjie Zhong,Youqiang Huang,Qinglong Hu,Xin Yao,Wei Liu,Keyu Han,Gongxun Bai

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has garnered significant attention as a sustainable technology for freshwater production. However, its widespread application is impeded by challenges, such as complex fabrication processes, high costs, and vulnerability to pore clogging. Herein, we present an E-shaped evaporator constructed through in situ integration of a binary photothermal nanocomposite comprising reduced graphene oxide and molybdenum disulfide (rGO/MoS2) onto a polyurethane sponge substrate. The synergistic light absorption enhancement of the rGO/MoS2 hybrid is rationally utilized to achieve excellent broadband solar harvesting. The distinctive E-shaped configuration simultaneously optimizes light utilization through multiangle photon capture and facilitates rapid water transport via hierarchical channels. This integrated system demonstrates exceptional operational stability with a cumulative water yield of 16.58 kg·m–2 under 12 h natural illumination, which could effectively facilitate seawater desalination and wastewater purification. The proposed fabrication strategy, characterized by cost-effectiveness and scalable manufacturing compatibility, paves the way for practical implementation in off-grid water purification systems.

Novel Conductive AgNP-Based Adhesive Based on Novel Poly (Ionic Liquid)-Based Waterborne Polyurethane Chloride Salts for E-Textiles

Haiyang Liao,Yeqi Xiao,Tiemin Xiao,Hongjin Kuang,Xiaolong Feng,Xiao Sun,Guixin Cui,Xiaofei Duan,Pu Shi

The emergence of novel e-textile materials that combine the inherent qualities of the textile substrate (lightweight, soft, breathable, durable, etc.) with the functionality of micro/nano-electronic materials (conductive, dielectric, sensing, etc.) has resulted in a trend toward miniaturization, integration, and intelligence in new electronic devices. However, the formation of a conductive network by micro/nano-conductive materials on textiles necessitates high-temperature sintering, which inevitably causes substrate aging and component damage. Herein, a bis-hydroxy-imidazolium chloride salt as a hard segment to synthesize a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) adhesive is designed and prepared. When used in nano-silver-based printing coatings, it offers strong adherence for coatings, reaching 16 N cm−1; on the other hand, the introduction of chloride ions enables low-temperature (60 °C) chemical sintering to address the challenge of secondary treatment and high-temperature sintering (>150 °C). Printed into flexible circuits, the resistivity can be controlled by the content of imidazolium salts anchored in the molecular chain of the WPU from a maximum resistivity of 3.1 × 107down to 5.8 × 10−5Ω m, and it can conduct a Bluetooth-type finger pulse detector with such low resistivity. As a flexible circuit, it also offers high stability against washing and adhesion, which the resistivity only reduces less than 20% after washing 10 times and adhesion. Owing to the adjustability of the resistivity, we fabricated an all-textile flexible pressure sensor that accurately differentiates different external pressures (min. 10 g, ~29 Pa), recognizes forms, and detects joint motions (finger bending and wrist flexion).

A Flexible Single-Sensor MEMS E-Nose with Dual-Temperature Modulation for VOCs Classification and Breath-Based Silent Communication

Mianyi Xiang,Yamin Liu,Ziyang Yang,Jinlei Jiang,Weicheng Wang,Yao Hu,Daxiang Cui,Qichao Li

Electronic noses (e-noses) have become indispensable analytical platforms for gas detection. However, conventional e-nose systems face significant limitations in portable and wearable implementations due to their bulk and high-power consumption. Herein, a single-sensor-based multifunctional e-nose system is reported by integrating a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) gas sensor with a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB). Specifically, the ZnO-ZnSnO 3 raspberry-like microspheres (ZZSRM) are utilized as the gas-sensitive materials, and the gas selectivity of the sensor is enhanced through a dual-temperature modulation strategy. Additionally, a gas classification model based on the MiniRocket algorithm has been developed, enabling efficient feature extraction and low-complexity classification of response signals, thereby satisfying the real-time processing demands of embedded devices. Moreover, a silent communication method is proposed, which maps breathing frequency to Morse code for information transmission in specific scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that the wearable system achieves high-precision classification and concentration prediction for eight volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while simultaneously enabling robust recognition of exhaled signals and instantaneous conversion of Morse code into legible alphabetic characters. By combining the gas sensor with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this work establishes a multifunctional flexible e-nose that merges portable gas detection and silent communication, offering a novel technological framework for environmental monitoring and human-machine interaction.

Self-Assembled Tocopherol-Albumin Nanoparticles with Full Biocompatibility for Chemo-photothermal Therapy against Breast Cancer

Haijun Shen,Qianqian Gao,Tingting Liu,Haoran Wang,Ran Zhang,Jie Zhou,Sihui Ding,Yang Ye,Zhenhua Sun

Background: The combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy has proven to be a promising strategy for cancer treatment. Various nanomaterials have shown great potential in combination therapy, including gold, graphene oxide, iron oxide, and other nanoparticles. However, their undefinable toxicity in vivo greatly slowed down their development for clinical applications. Objective: The present work aimed to develop a multifunctional nanoparticle for chemo-photothermal therapy composed of acknowledged biocompatible materials. Methods: A novel biocompatible nanoparticle (HIT-NPs) was self-assembled through the intrinsic interaction between D-α-tocopherol Succinate (TOS), human serum albumin (HSA) and indocyanine green (ICG). Doxorubicin (DOX) was then loaded due to the ion pairing between DOX and TOS. The feasibility of combined chemo-photothermal therapy induced by DOX-loaded HIT-NPs was carefully evaluated. Results: In vitro, HIT-NPs showed no cytotoxicity on human normal liver cells (HL-7702 cells) but obvious killing effects on murine breast cancer cells (4T1 cells). The combined chemo-photothermal therapeutic effect on 4T1 cells was successfully obtained. DOX-loaded HIT-NPs could effectively accumulate in 4T1 subcutaneous tumors after intravenous injection, and the tumor temperature rapidly increased under laser exposure, indicating the feasibility of PTT in vivo. Conclusion: The self-assembled HIT-NPs could provide a promising platform for combined chemo- photothermal cancer therapy with full biocompatibility.

A semi-supervised domain adaptation for cross-gas concentration prediction with multi-target and bidirectional transfer for E-nose system

Haixia Mei,Jingyi Peng,Tao Wang,Bowei Zhang,Fuzhen Xuan

Although current unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods enable knowledge transfer without labeled data, their performance in regression tasks is often hindered by noisy pseudo-labels in the target domain. This challenge is particularly pronounced in gas concentration prediction, which demands higher label accuracy than classification tasks, yet lacks systematic research. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel semi-supervised cross-domain regression framework named Online-Teacher Domain-Adaptive Regression Network (OT-DARN) for accurate multi-gas concentration estimation. OT-DARN integrates an online teacher-student architecture that incorporates domain adversarial learning, along with a pseudo-label selection mechanism, to enhance both transferability and generalization. Extensive experiments on 15 commercially available gas sensor datasets demonstrate that OT-DARN achieves state-of-the-art performance with a minimum mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.7769 parts per million (ppm) under n-propanol concentrations of 10–100 ppm at (50 ± 10) % relative humidity and a temperature of (25 ± 2) °C, with a maximum R² of 0.9986 while reducing the labeling cost by 70 %. Even under fully unlabeled settings, the model achieves an MAE of 6.1206 and R² of 0.9317. Furthermore, bidirectional transfer experiments reveal no statistically significant differences between migration directions, validating its robustness. OT-DARN also consistently outperforms four representative UDA methods across various source–target combinations. Ablation studies further confirm the individual and joint contributions of key modules. This work pioneers semi-supervised cross-domain regression for gas concentration prediction and offers a cost-efficient, high-precision solution applicable to real-world sensing scenarios.

Engineering a Self-Defensive Restoration-Tooth Interface via Bioactive nMgO/E-POSS Bulk-Fill Resin Composites for Enhanced Dental Restorations

Zhongyuan Wu,Yuwei Zhao,Aihua Li,Ting Wang,David C. Watts,Nicholas G. Fischer,Hang Wang,Jing Fu

Light-curing resin composites (RCs) are widely used for tooth defect restoration. However, challenges such as high polymerization shrinkage and lack of anti-cariogenic activities compromise interfacial integrity and significantly increase restoration failure risks. To address these limitations, we developed a bioactive multifunctional bulk-fill RC by integrating sol-gel-synthesized monodisperse nano-MgO (nMgO), Stöber-derived monodisperse submicron spherical silica (sSiO 2 ), and dendritic epoxy-cyclohexyl functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (E-POSS). RCs achieved a larger depth of cure (DOC > 4 mm) and higher degree of conversion (>80%), enabling reliable clinical handling. nMgO/E-POSS may synergistically enhance the restoration-tooth interface through: (1) low shrinkage and reduced shrinkage stress via E-POSS-mediated cationic ring-opening polymerization and rigid structure, effectively minimizing interfacial gaps and microleakage after 10,000 thermal cycles; (2) potent antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans through nMgO-mediated mechanisms including direct contact inhibition, Mg 2 ⁺/ROS generation, and alkaline microenvironment creation; and (3) E-POSS-guided biomimetic remineralization of demineralized dentin through Ca-P deposition and the stabilizing effect of Mg 2 ⁺ on amorphous calcium phosphate. Our novel RCs also maintain clinically satisfactory mechanical properties, hydrolytic/thermal stability, and excellent biosafety. By synergizing self-defensive antibacterial-remineralization capabilities with low-shrinkage-enhanced interfacial adaptation, this multifunctional composite provides a promising strategy for restoring large dental defects while preventing secondary caries and extending restoration longevity.
