Conductive hydrogel is considered a promising wearable sensor material. Developing flexible conductive hydrogel sensors with stretchability, adhesion, and stability remains challenging. In this study, a transparent, self-adhesive, antifreeze, anti-UV, stretchable, conductive, and reusable hydrogel with polyacrylamide/glycerol/gelatin/tannic acid/Fe 3+ (PGGT-Fe 3+ ) structure is successfully constructed through a simple one-pot polymerization method. The PGGT-Fe 3+ hydrogel is composed of dual networks of polyacrylamide and gelatin for organic cross-linking, using water/glycerol as the dispersion medium, and incorporates a viscous substance: tannic acid, and a conductive substance: metal ions (Fe 3+ ). Due to the introduction of the abundant amino, carboxylic acid, and hydroxyl functional groups on gelatin and tannic acid, the PGGT-Fe 3+ hydrogel exhibits excellent and repeatable adhesion capabilities on various surfaces (including glass, metal, plastic, and pigskin) with maximum adhesion strength of 98 kPa when attached to pigskin. Furthermore, based on the stable conductive network and high conductivity, the hydrogel not only exhibits strain sensitivity, fast response, and stability but also can stably collect epidermal bio signals. In conclusion, this work provides a new approach to the design and development of next-generation multifunctional conductive hydrogels and opens up vast possibilities for their applications in the flexible electronics field.

The development of continuously degradable and recyclable polymeric composites with superb mechanical properties, which can extend the service life of materials and reduce the environmental impact, will make a significant contribution to global sustainability. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based composites (D-PVA-Fe-TA) with degradability, recyclability and excellent mechanical properties are prepared by complexation of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde-grafted PVA (D-PVA), tannin (TA) and Fe 3+ ions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and then dialysis in deionized water and glycerol (Gly). The two-step dialysis process, playing a crucial role in reducing the free water of D-PVA-Fe-TA composites, enhances the formation of reversible of hydrogen-bonding and the reinforcement of self-assembled Fe 3+ -chelation between TA and D-PVA, and facilitates the fabrication of PVA-based composites with a breaking strength of ≈ 18.7 MPa, an elongation at break of ∼ 812 % and a toughness of ≈ 86.81 MJ/m 3 ; Meanwhile, the resulting homogeneous and dense structure of D-PVA-Fe-TA composites hinders the penetration of Gly solution, thereby enhancing the bonding strength and environmental adaptability of D-PVA-TA-Fe composites within the temperature range of −20℃ to 60℃. Furthermore, the as-prepared D-PVA-TA-Fe composites exhibit recyclability for multiple cycles. When placed under soil culture medium, the resulting composites can be degraded without the need for manual interference. This study presents a novel strategy for the fabrication of materials possessing excellent mechanical strength, environmental adaptability, recyclability and degradation, which have great potential for taking the place of conversional composites in specific conditions.

Fingerprint recognition plays a crucial role due to its uniqueness. However, conventional detection methods suffer from significant drawbacks, including high consumption, health risk and sample contamination, which restrict their practical application in the crime investigations and forensic analysis. This necessitates the development of simple, rapid, safe and environmentally-friendly alternative methods for fingerprints detection. In this work, we report the synthesis of novel cyan-emitting carbon dots (CDs) via a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction using polyethyleneimine and coumarin as precursors. The CDs enabled the clear visualization of fingerprint patterns on various substrates through immersion and spraying methods with pure water solutions, without the need for any cosolvents. Level 2 and level 3 details of fingermarks were evidently visible for individual identification within a short exposure time under 365 nm UV light irradiation. Additionally, fluorescent 3D fingerprint images revealed direct and specific evidence regarding pressing habits. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was tunable by adjusting the pH. We further fabricated invisible CDs ink for information encryption and decryption via UV irradiation and acid/alkali treatment. Moreover, CDs have the specific ability to sense Fe 3+ ions in actual water samples, with a detection limit of 0.613 μM and a linear range of 0–27 μM. We conducted an in-depth study on the fluorescence quenching mechanism of CDs caused by Fe 3+ ions, proposing a plausible mechanism based on a synergistic effect of dynamic quenching, static quenching and inner filter effect. Therefore, this study provides a promising multifunctional nanomaterial for fingerprint recognition, data encryption, and Fe 3+ detection.

Psychoactive substances abuse is a global issue, with the methamphetamine (METH) being the most used and produced illicit substance in recent years. METH has been recognized as emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Research on the removal of METH from surface water is still lacking in-depth exploration. The effects of key aqueous environmental factors on the photodegradation of METH were investigated in this study. NO₃ ⁻ , Fe 3+ and dissolved organic matter (DOM) enhanced the photodegradation of METH, respectively, with degradation rates increasing as their concentrations increased. When HCO₃ ⁻ coexisted with NO₃ ⁻ , it exhibited dual effects on METH photodegradation: low concentrations inhibited the process, whereas high concentrations promoted it. The primary photodegradation products of METH, such as OH-METH, (OH) 2 -METH, AMP and NO 2 -OH-METH, were identified. The latter two compounds were newly discovered in this study. The mechanism of NO₃ ⁻ , HCO₃ ⁻ and Fe 3+ accelerating the photodegradation of METH in water was proposed to proceed via the generation of hydroxyl radical (HO∙), leading to the oxidation of METH, along with the involvement of nitro radical (∙NO 2 ) and carbonate radical (CO 3 •- ).

A novel near-infrared antibacterial material, Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder, was synthesized and applied to kill Aeromonas hydrophia with a maximal bactericidal rate of 65% in 90 min under 980 nm laser irradiation. However, Fe3+-TiO2 or Er3+-Yb3+-TiO2 nanopowders obtained under the same conditions barely could kill Aeromonas hydrophia. The initial energy applied in the photocatalysis antibacterial process is supplied by the upconversion emission of Er3+ and Yb3+ and the codoping of Fe3+, which has intensified the light absorption intensity and enlarged the absorption range. The analyses of phase structure and the optical properties including XRD, UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and upconversion photoluminescence spectra of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder have been performed in detail to reveal the complex energy transfer and change mechanism. According to our experimental results, the mechanism has been demonstrated involving the upconversion emission, multistep excitation by means of intermediate energy level, capture and transfer electrons of Fe3+, and so on. The photocatalystic antibacterial function of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+-TiO2 under near-infrared instead of ultraviolet light is also reported. Because of the strong penetrability of near-infrared, this kind of material may be used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria or tumors directly.

In this study, a carbon dot-based ratiometric fluorescence (RF) probe was used as a fluorescent "on-off-on" sensor to detect Fe3+ and the pesticide amitrole (AMT). The RF probe consists of orange carbon dots (O-CDs) and blue carbon dots (B-CDs). B-CDs forms a ground-state complex with Fe3+ which leads to fluorescence quenching, while the addition of AMT restores fluorescence. Based on this "on-off-on" process, a quantitative detection of Fe3+ and AMT is achieved, showing good linearity in the range 0-50 μM and 0-30 μM. The low detection limit of Fe3+ and AMT are as low as 24 nM and 0.18 μM, respectively. In addition, fluorescent color changes are converted into RGB values by a smartphone sensing device., and the concentration of Fe3+ and AMT is determined by colorimetric analysis. The method was further applied to real samples such as lake water, tap water and urine with satisfactory results. Additionally, a portable sensor with a semi-hydrophobic film was fabricated for on-site AMT detection, showcasing practical applicability. This work provides a cost-effective, rapid, and dual-mode strategy for environmental and biological monitoring of Fe³⁺ and AMT.

Traditional lignin-silver nanoparticle hydrogels are often limited by slow gelation (> 3 h), weak mechanical properties, and limited antibacterial efficacy. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by incorporating metal ions (Fe 3+ and Al 3+ ) into lignin-silver nanoparticle (AgNP) composites embedded in an acrylic acid (AA) matrix. This modification significantly enhances the hydrogel's multifunctionality. The presence of metal ions accelerates gelation, enabling rapid formation of highly crosslinked structures within seconds, a notable improvement over conventional lignin-based hydrogels, which typically exhibit slower gelation. Detailed characterization using SEM, FTIR, and XPS analyses reveals that metal ions interact with lignin moieties, inducing redox reactions and coordinating with functional groups, such as phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The Fe 3+ -based hydrogel demonstrates potent antibacterial activity, driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (MIC = 1 mg/mL and MBC = 2 mg/mL against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively), while the Al 3+ -based hydrogel shows enhanced mechanical resilience, maintaining 95% recovery after compression. Compared to conventional lignin@AgNPs-AA hydrogels, both hydrogels exhibit remarkable multifunctional properties, including 2.5 × higher compressive strength, 90% DPPH radical scavenging activity, and improved stability. Mechanistic studies highlight distinct antibacterial pathways: Fe 3+ promotes oxidative stress through Fenton reactions, while Al 3 ⁺ disrupts bacterial membranes. This work establishes a rapid, metal-ion-catalyzed approach for the development of lignin-based hydrogels, addressing previous limitations and offering promising applications in wound healing, sensors, and environmental remediation. Due to the frequent occurrence of marine oil spill accidents, the ecological environment is facing severe threats. However, some traditional oil-water separation methods suffer from issues such as high cost, environmental unfriendliness and low efficiency. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a simple and efficient oil-water separation membrane. Leveraging the non-toxicity and abundance of hydrophilic groups (such as -carboxyl and -OH) in tannic acid, this study, for the first time, forms a hydrophilic coating on the surface of polyimide membrane (PI) through the complexation of tannic acid with ferric chloride hexahydrate, thus fabricating a superhydrophilic/superoleophobic membrane for oil-water separation. The water contact angle (WCA) of the modified membrane drops to 0° within 5 s, while the underwater oil contact angle (UOCA) reaches up to 142°. Moreover, under the action of gravity, the membrane not only achieves a high water flux of 2100 L·m -2 ·h -1 but also attains a removal rate of over 90 % for various oil-in-water emulsions. In addition, the modified membrane exhibits excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and salts, as well as outstanding oil-fouling resistance. This promising material offers a universal modification strategy with broad applications in wastewater treatment.

Multi-network hydrogels have attracted much attention for their excellent mechanical properties, antimicrobial properties and biocompatibility in wound healing. However, their application is limited by the lack of hemostatic properties and adhesion. Herein, we designed a hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), and introduced a third network by doping gelatin. In order to improve the hemostatic properties of the hydrogels, the effect of Fe 3+ doping amounts on the hemostatic properties of the hydrogels was investigated. The blood loss in the liver and tail hemorrhage models was 48 mg and 23 mg, respectively, which was only 23.5 % and 20.3 % of the hemostatic cotton ball (CB) control. The prepared triple reticulated hydrogel showed significant aggregation effect on blood platelets. Importantly, the hydrogel can quickly adhere to close the wound and has good hemostatic effect both in vitro and in vivo. The swelling rate exceeded 700 % at 14 days indicating that the hydrogel has strong structural stability properties. The self-healing ability of hydrogels was investigated based on dynamic covalent and hydrogen bonding . Through the multi-crosslinking strategy, our work successfully prepared a polysaccharide bio-adhesive hydrogel dressing with self-healing, and good hemostatic properties, which has a promising application in emergency hemostasis and wound healing .

Iron and copper ions has been confirmed to be an impurity generated during the production of coal-based ethylene glycol. Therefore, a highly sensitive fluorescent probe based on N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) is constructed by two different mechanisms for the independent detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in ethylene glycol. In this method, Cu 2+ undergoes an oxidation-reduction reaction with o -phenylenediamine (OPD), leading to the formation of 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD). oxOPD emits a fluorescence signal, and simultaneously, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurs between N-CDs and oxOPD, resulting in the quenching of the fluorescence intensity of N-CDs. Owing to the selective oxidation reaction and colorimetric response of OPD with Cu 2+ , a ratiometric fluorescent and colorimetric dual-signal probe for detecting Cu 2+ is successfully developed. Furthermore, Fe 3+ can effectively quench the fluorescence of N-CDs through the static quenching. Under optimized conditions, the probe demonstrates excellent selectivity and sensitivity to Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , a wide linear response range and a low detection limit (LOD). The probe was applied to the detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in various types of industrial ethylene glycol (high ethylene glycol content, industrial-grade ethylene glycol and polyester-grade ethylene glycol) with satisfactory recovery rate. The probe provides a promising prospect for the routine detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in industrial ethylene glycol.

A newly developed cadmium coordination polymer, [Cd(HEA)(L1)] n ( 1 ), was prepared via a hydrothermal method and demonstrated to function as a multifunctional fluorescent probe for detecting heavy metal ions and antibiotics in aqueous solutions. The compound exhibits an unique two-dimensional layered structure that self-organizes into a robust three-dimensional framework, showcasing exceptional thermal stability and significant solvent tolerance. Fluorescence studies emphasized the outstanding metal ion detection capabilities of complex 1 , which demonstrated a detection limit of 0.01434 μM for Fe 3+ and 0.05949–0.06148 μM for Cr 6+ . Furthermore, the material exhibited selective fluorescence quenching towards specific antibiotics, with detection limits of 0.0369 μM for Ornidazole (ODZ) and 0.0687 μM for Nitrofurazone (NFZ). Notably, the material retained its fluorescent properties over five consecutive usage cycles. Comprehensive experimental studies and theoretical calculations show that the fluorescence quenching process involves the synergistic action of multiple mechanisms, mainly including: static quenching, dynamic quenching, competitive absorption, and light-induced electron transfer pathways. This work presents a promising strategy for sensing trace heavy metals and antibiotics in water systems, offering valuable contributions to the development of advanced environmental monitoring methodologies.

Iron ion (Fe 3+ ) detection is crucial for human health since it plays a crucial role in many physiological activities. In this work, a novel Schiff-base functionalized cyanine derivative (CyPy) was synthesized, which was successfully assembled on the surface of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) through an amphiphilic polymer encapsulation method. In the as-designed nanoprobe, CyPy, a recognizer of Fe 3+ , is served as energy donor and β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles are adopted as energy acceptor. As a result, a 93-fold enhancement of upconversion luminescence is achieved. The efficient energy transfer from CyPy to β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er endows the nanoprobe a high sensitivity for Fe 3+ in water with a low detection limit of 0.21 μM. Moreover, the nanoprobe has been successfully applied for Fe 3+ determination in human serum and tap water samples with recovery ranges of 95 %-105 % and 97 %-106 %, respectively. Moreover, their relative standard deviations are all below 3.72 %. This work provides a sensitive and efficient methodology for Fe 3+ detection in clinical and environmental testing.
