A biomolecule-free photoelectrochemical(PEC) probe(denoted as Ru-1) was designed, synthesized and coupled with TiO 2 nanoparticles(NPs) for the highly sensitive and selective PEC detection of Hg 2+ , a model analyte with hypertoxicity to both human health and ecosystem. The probe Ru-1 was designed with Ru(II) bipyridyl complex as the chromophore, thiocyanate ligand as the recognition unit, and carboxylate group as the linkage site to connect Ru-1 to TiO 2 nanoparticles. Under irradiation, Ru-1 shows strong affinity to TiO 2 and good photophysical properties of strong visible light absorption, slow electron-hole(e-h + ) recombination, and fast photoelectron injection to TiO 2 nanoparticles via the π -bridge of 4-(2,2′-bipyridin)-4-yl-thiophene moiety. However, the specific coordination of Hg 2+ with Ru-1 via the thiol moiety in the thiocyanate enlarges the band gap of the complex and reduces the photocurrent significantly. The synergistic interaction between TiO 2 nanoparticles and the Ru-1 complex led to a selective PEC sensing strategy for Hg 2+ detection. Detectable linear ranges from 10 −12 g/mL to 10 −7 g/mL and from 10 −7 g/mL to 10 −3 g/mL were obtained without the interference from possibly co-existed metal ions. The good analytical performances indicate the chemical probe based biomolecule-free PEC platform may offer a new route for the detection of biologically and environmentally important small molecules.

In this study, peroxidase-mimicking core–shell Au@Pt nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) were synthesized, and both Hg2+ and Ag+ were found to intensively inhibit the catalytic activity of the Au@Pt NPs. The interactions between the two metal ions and Au@Pt NPs were analyzed through characterization by TEM, DLS, EPR and XPS, etc. Based on the inhibition of both Hg2+ and Ag+ toward the catalytic activity of the Au@Pt NPs and the shielding of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) toward interfering metal ions, a highly sensitive and selective colorimetric assay for Hg2+ and Ag+ was developed. In addition, L-cysteine can be used to mask Hg2+ in the presence of Ag+; therefore, a specific detection of Ag+ ions can be accomplished by this Au@Pt NP-based assay. The limits of detection (LODs) for Hg2+ and Ag+ are 3.5 nM and 2.0 nM, respectively. The linear ranges for detecting Hg2+ and Ag+ are from 10 nM to 200 nM and from 5.0 nM to 100 nM, respectively. Moreover, the colorimetric assay is highly selective toward Hg2+ and Ag+ over other common metal ions. This work demonstrates that the optimization of metal nanoparticle preparation and surface modification play very important roles in developing metal ion sensing based on metal NP enzyme mimics. In addition, the metallic nanozyme based colorimetric method here demonstrates advantages in practical applications as it is low-cost, simple, and highly sensitive and selective, although it needs a two-step reaction.

Maillard reactions and their fluorescent products have drawn much attention in the fields of food and life science, however, the application of fluorescent products separated from the reaction as an indicator for detection of certain substances in sensor field has not been mentioned. In this article, we report on an easy-to-synthesize and water-soluble fluorescent probe separated from the typical Maillard reaction products of glutathione and ascorbic acid , with excellent stability and high quantum yield (18.2%). The further application of the probe has been explored for dual detection of Hg 2+ and biothiols including cysteine, homocysteine , and glutathione, which is based on Hg 2+ -induced fluorescence quenching of the Maillard reaction fluorescent products (MRFPs) and the fluorescence recovery as the introduction of biothiols. This sensing system exhibits a good selectivity and sensitivity, and the linear ranges for Hg 2+ , cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione are 0.05–12, 0.5–10, 0.3–20, and 0.3–20 μM, respectively. The detection limits for Hg 2+ , cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione are 22, 47, 96, and 30 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, respectively. Furthermore, the practical applications of this sensor for Hg 2+ and biothiols determination in water samples and human plasma sample have been demonstrated with satisfactory results.

A kind of biocompatible fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) has been synthesized using uric acid as raw material through a facile, effective and green thermal treatment method in one pot. The surface morphology and optical properties of the synthesized NCDs were characterized. Without further chemical modification, the NCDs emit bright blue fluorescence with a high quantum yield of 56% due to the enhancement effect of N dopant atoms on a surface of carbon quantum dots. Owing to the strong blue fluorescence, negligible toxicity and the special response of heavy metal ions, the NCDs have been used as a fluorescence probe for sensitive and selective detection of Hg 2+ and Ag + ions with detection limit of 4.8 nM and 1 nM, respectively. Moreover, it was successfully applied to determination of Hg 2+ and Ag + in real environmental water samples, which offers the advantages of simplicity and cost efficiency.

Ethynyl triggered enhanced fluorescence quenching effect was first reported based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between fluorophore and ethynyl. Ethynyl and 6-carboxyl-fluorescein (FAM) were labeled at the 5′- and 3′-termini of a poly d(T) sequence containing three thymine units, respectively. In the presence of Hg 2+ , Hg 2+ binds to two thymine residues through T–Hg 2+ –T interactions and the formed T–Hg 2+ –T base pairs bring FAM and ethynyl from two matched sequences into close proximity . On the one hand, π-stacked T–Hg 2+ –T mediates and accepts electron transfer of the excited state of FAM and quenches the fluorescence through PET. On the other hand, π-stacked interactions between ethynyl and FAM also provide a de-excitation process for the excited state of FAM via PET and trigger an enhanced fluorescence quenching. On the basis of fluorescence quenching, a simple, rapid, and sensitive Hg 2+ sensor was constructed; under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was obtained over the concentration range of 5–150 nM for Hg 2+ and a very low detection limit (0.42 nM) was reached. The developed system was further designed as a cysteine (Cys) sensor based on fluorescence recovery resulted from the strong interaction between Cys and Hg 2+ ; the proposed Cys sensor has a linear range of 10–550 nM and a detection limit of 2.5 nM. The two sensors were used for analysis of real samples and the satisfactory results were achieved.

Highly luminescent, good stable and low toxic N-acetyl- l -cysteine (NAC) capped CdTe/CdS@ZnS–SiO 2 near-infrared (NIR)-emitting quantum dots (QDs) were successfully fabricated in aqueous solution via a microwave irradiation reduction route, in which thiol-capped CdTe/CdS QDs were employed as core templates and ZnCl 2 , NAC and tetraethyl orthosilicate as shell precursors. This presented ZnS-like clusters filled hybrid SiO 2 model not only greatly improved the brightness and stability of original CdTe/CdS QDs, but also tremendously decreased the cytotoxicity towards HeLa cells. Furthermore, it was found that Hg 2+ could effectively selective quench the QD NIR emission based on electron transfer process. On the basis of this fact, a simple, rapid and specific method for trace Hg 2+ determination was proposed. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly with the concentration of Hg 2+ ranging from 5.0 × 10 −9 to 1.0 × 10 −6 M and the limit of detection for Hg 2+ was 1.0 × 10 −9 M ( S / N = 3). As practical applications, the novel NIR sensor has been demonstrated to monitor and image Hg 2+ level in milk power and HeLa cells respectively with satisfactory results obtained.

Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs with weak oxidase activity were synthesized using Se-W carbon dots (Se-WCDs) as stabilizers and reducing agents. These Janus nanoparticles (Janus NPs) effectively catalyze the reduction of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) to metallic mercury (Hg 0 ), generating Au–Ag-Hg mercury alloys (Au–Ag@HgNPs). The aggregated Au–Ag@HgNPs on the nanoparticles improve the SERS activity of Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs through a synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement and chemical enhancement. Interestingly, adding FB1 turns off the Raman signal by inhibiting the aggregation of Au–Ag@HgNPs. Based on these findings, a SERS “on–off” sensor utilizing the Se-WCDs-Au-Janus Ag NPs as the probe was successfully developed to determine fumonisin B1 (FB1) and Hg 2+ in grains. The detection limits were as low as 0.005 μg·L −1 for Hg 2+ and 0.006 μg·L −1 for FB1. Graphical abstract

A novel rhodamine-based multi-ion fluorescent sensor, RGN, was designed and synthesized for the highly selective detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in ethanol and water systems, as well as trivalent cations (Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , and Cr 3+ ) in acetonitrile and water systems using a two-step Schiff base reaction method. Nuclear magnetic titration experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the sensor achieved the detection of the aforementioned metal ions through the fluorescence turn-on phenomenon induced by lactam ring-opening. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed decreased HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and increased dipole moments, indicating the effective coordination of the sensor with the corresponding metal ions to form more stable complexes, thereby achieving detection objectives. Furthermore, the fluorescence turn-on sensor RGN exhibited relatively low detection limits, with limits of detection (LOD) for Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , and Hg 2+ being 10.20 nM, 14.66 nM, 58.78 nM, and 73.33 nM, respectively. Finally, practical applications of sensor RGN in environmental water samples, L929 cells, and zebrafish were demonstrated, indicating its potential for detecting and tracking Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , and Hg 2+ in environmental samples and biological systems, with prospects for biomedical applications in the diagnosis and treatment of heavy metal ion-induced diseases.

It is imperative to design a highly selective, sensitive, and portable approach for the reliable determination and monitoring of mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) given its severe toxicity to both ecosystems and public health. Herein, we develop a colorimetric and photothermal-derived multimodal sensor for point-of-care testing of Hg 2+ based on the Hg 2+ -sensitized oxidase-mimetic activity of CoSe 2 nanorods. The synthesized CoSe 2 nanorods show negligible oxidase-mimetic activity. It can bind with CoSe 2 nanorods via an Hg-Se bond when Hg 2+ is present. The generation of HgSe on the surface of CoSe 2 nanorods booms the oxidase-like activity of CoSe 2 nanorods to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidative TMB (oxTMB), generating a hyperchromic effect and light-driven thermal effect. Consequently, the color and absorbance of the solution changed, realizing the colorimetric and visual sensing of Hg 2+ . The limit of detection (LOD) is 7.3 nM for colorimetry. Meanwhile, a photothermal sensor was also developed under the drive of a laser with a LOD of 12.3 nM. The developed sensor also shows high selectivity toward Hg 2+ because of the strong affinity between the CoSe 2 and Hg 2+ . Furthermore, the latent application of this sensor is confirmed by determining Hg 2+ in real water samples. More significantly, multimodal detection not only enhances accurate detection results through mutual authentication of different signals but also satisfies the demands of diversified detection by consolidating the advantages of photothermal and colorimetric approaches.

Developing stable, noble-free SERS substrates with high selectivity and reproducibility remains a major analytical challenge. Herein, a novel noble-free substrate of TiO 2 decorated flower-like 2H-MoS 2 (2H-MoS 2 /TiO 2 ) heterostructure was fabricated for sensitive and selective analysis of mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) in environmental water, demonstrating high potential for monitoring real water samples following standard pretreatment. The 2H-MoS 2 /TiO 2 heterostructure can be simply prepared by two-step hydrothermal method, as well as exhibiting high SERS activity with low minimum detectable concentration (1.0 μg/L) and promising enhancement factor (about 10 5 ) for Rhodamine 6G and derivatives. The good Raman enhancement attributes to multiple synergistic effect of high adsorbability of 2H-MoS 2 /TiO 2 , molecular resonance and significant charge transfer effect, which was investigated by experiments and density functional theory simulations. The indirect analytical method for Hg 2+ based on good SERS activity and specificity of R-NH 2 for Hg 2+ was established. The low limit of detection (0.16 μg/L) with linearity of 0.5 μg/L–1.0 mg/L for Hg 2+ can be obtained. The recoveries of Hg 2+ in environmental water is 82.3–106.7 % with low relative standard deviations of 2.1–6.3 %. More than just a high-performance substrate, this work provides a general design strategy for constructing stable and practical noble-free heterojunctions, significantly advancing the development of reliable SERS methodologies for on-site environmental analysis.

Herein we designed a novel photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on Fe 3+ doped ZnO-Ag photocatalyst (Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag) for ultrasensitive Hg 2+ detection by using exonuclease III-assisted target recycling and DNAzyme-catalyzed amplification. Firstly, Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag was synthesized to provide photocurrent under visible light irradiation. Secondly, target Hg 2+ was determined by hairpin DNA probes on the Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag modified ITO based on T-Hg 2+ -T, and then Hg 2+ was released by the digestion of exonuclease III to double-stranded DNA. Finally, the photocurrent markedly decreased due to catalysis of hemin/G-quadruplex toward 4-chloro-1-naphthol. Under optimal conditions, the photocurrents were linearly related to Hg 2+ concentrations form 0. 5 nM to 100 nM with a detection limit of 0. 1 nM at the 3 S blank criterion. More importantly, the developed biosensor exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, and stability, meanwhile, this analysis platform held great potential for testing real water samples in future.

We report on the fabrication of an amphiphilic block copolymer-based colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for Hg2+ ions that was prepared by sequential RAFT polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and a novel rhodamine-based Hg2+-recognizing monomer, R6GDM. Because of its amphiphilic properties, the block copolymer P[NIPAM]-b-P[R6GDM] can self-assemble into micelles, which allows it to be used as a chemosensor in aqueous solution. Upon addition of Hg2+ ions to the micelle solution, visual color change and fluorescence enhancement were observed. Moreover, it exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+ ions, relatively. Besides, it can serve as a potential multifunctional sensor to pH and temperature (in a specific temperature range: 25–40 °C or 40–52 °C). The water dispersibility and biocompatibility of these polymer micelles could provide a new strategy for detecting analytes in environmental and biological systems.
