CdSeTe/CdS Type-I Core/Shell Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells with Efficiency over 9%

Junwei Yang,Jin Wang,Ke Zhao,Takuya Izuishi,Yan Li,Qing Shen,Xinhua Zhong

Surface trap defects are the limited factor for quantum dots (QDs) application in solar cells. The trapping states can be efficiently suppressed by coating a shell of wider band gap material around the core QDs. We choose CdSe0.65Te0.35 (simplified as CdSeTe) as a model core material, and CdS shell was then overcoated around the CdSeTe core QD to decrease surface defect density and to increase the stability of the core QDs. By optimizing the thickness of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the CdSeTe/CdS quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) is enhanced by 13% in comparison with that of plain CdSeTe QDSCs. Transient absorption (TA), incident-photo-to-carrier conversion efficiency (IPCE), open-circuit voltage decay (OVCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements confirmed the suppressed charge recombination process in internal QDs and QD/TiO2/electrolyte interfaces with the overcoating of CdS shell around CdSeTe core QDs. With the further overcoating of a-TiO2 and SiO2 barrier layers around the QD-sensitized photoanode, the PCE of champion CdSeTe QDSCs achieved 9.48% (Jsc = 20.82 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.713 V, FF = 0.639) with average PCE 9.39 ± 0.09% under AM 1.5 G one full sun illumination.

New insights into the action of bacterial chondroitinase AC I and hyaluronidase on hyaluronic acid

Lei Tao,Fei Song,Naiyu Xu,Duxin Li,Robert J. Linhardt,Zhenqing Zhang

Hyaluronic acid (HA), a glycosaminoglycan, is a linear polysaccharide with negative charge, composed of a repeating disaccharide unit [→4)-β- d -glucopyranosyluronic acid (1   →   3)-β- d - N -acetyl- d -glucoaminopyranose (1   →   ] n ([→4) GlcA (1   →   3) GlcNAc 1   →   ] n ). It is widely used in different applications based on its physicochemical properties associated with its molecular weight. Enzymatic digestion by polysaccharides lyases is one of the most important ways to decrease the molecular weight of HA. Thus, it is important to understand the action patterns of lyases acting on HA. In this study, the action patterns of two common lyases, Flavobacterial chondroitinase AC I and Streptomyces hyaluronidase, were investigated by analyzing HA oligosaccharide digestion products. HA oligosaccharides having an odd-number of saccharide residues were observed in the products of both lyases, but their distributions were quite different. Chondroitinase AC acted more efficiently at the β 1–4 glycosidic bond linking GlcNAc and GlcA. Oligosaccharides, having an even number of saccharide residues, and with an unsaturated uronic acid (4-deoxy-α- l - threo -hex-4-enepyranosyluronic acid, △UA) residue at their non-reducing end represent the major product. A minor amount of oligosaccharides having an odd number of saccharide residues resulted from the irregular terminal residues of HA substrate chains. Hyaluronidase showed a more complicated product mixture. Its minimum recognition and digestion domain is HA heptasaccharide and it could cleave both β 1–4 and β 1–3 glycosidic linkages. The HA oligosaccharides, generated with a 2-acetamido-2,3-di-deoxy-β- d - erythro -hex-2-enopyranose (△HexNAc) at the non-reducing end, are believed to be unstable and undergo breakdown immediately after their generation, and the oligosaccharides with △UA residue at the non-reducing end are formed. Thus, oligosaccharides having both an even and odd-number saccharide residues with a △UA residue at their non-reducing ends, represent the major products of hyaluronidase acting on HA.

The preosteoblast response of electrospinning PLGA/PCL nanofibers: effects of biomimetic architecture and collagen I

Yunzhu Qian,Hanbang Chen,Yang Xu,Jianxin Yang,Xuefeng Zhou,Feimin Zhang,Ning Gu

Constructing biomimetic structure and incorporating bioactive molecules is an effective strategy to achieve a more favorable cell response. To explore the effect of electrospinning (ES) nanofibrous architecture and collagen I (COL I)-incorporated modification on tuning osteoblast response, a resorbable membrane composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/poly(caprolactone) (PLGA/PCL; 7:3 w/w) was developed via ES. COL I was blended into PLGA/PCL solution to prepare composite ES membrane. Notably, relatively better cell response was delivered by the bioactive ES-based membrane which was fabricated by modification of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and COL I. After investigation by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, and mechanical test, polyporous three-dimensional nanofibrous structure with low tensile force and the successful integration of COL I was obtained by the ES method. Compared with traditional PLGA/PCL membrane, the surface hydrophilicity of collagen-incorporated membranes was largely enhanced. The behavior of mouse preosteoblast MC3T3-E1 cell infiltration and proliferation on membranes was studied at 24 and 48 hours. The negative control was fabricated by solvent casting. Evaluation of cell adhesion and morphology demonstrated that all the ES membranes were more favorable for promoting the cell adhesion and spreading than the casting membrane. Cell Counting Kit-8 assays revealed that biomimetic architecture, surface topography, and bioactive properties of membranes were favorable for cell growth. Analysis of β1 integrin expression level by immunofluorescence indicated that such biomimetic architecture, especially COL I-grafted surface, plays a key role in cell adhesion and proliferation. The real-time polymerase chain reaction suggested that both surface topography and bioactive properties could facilitate the cell adhesion. The combined effect of biomimetic architecture with enhanced surface activity by 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine-assisted modification and COL I incorporation of PLGA/PCL electrospun membranes could successfully fill osteogenic defects and allow for better cell proliferation and differentiation.

A Novel Fluorescent Nanoswitch Based on Carbon Dots for Sensitive Detection of Hg2+ and I−

Xiqing Liu,Xiao Wei,Yeqing Xu,Hongji Li,Kai Lu,Kun Wang,Yongsheng Yan

In this paper, a novel fluorescent nanoswitch based on carbon dots (CDs) was developed for the sensitive and selective determination of Hg 2 + and I − . The CDs were obtained by simple hydrothermal process and had a strong fluorescence emission at 440 nm. The fluorescence of the CDs can be selectively quenched by Hg 2 + ion, and then the I − was added into the system, which can interact with Hg 2 + and recover fluorescence of the CDs. Under optimal conditions, the quenching fluorescence intensity on addition of Hg 2 + has obtained a satisfactory linear relationship covering the linear range of 0–50 μ M with the linear relationship ( R 1 2 = 0 . 9 9 9 1 ), and the limit of detection is 0.047 μ M. The additions of I − could lead to the fluorescence intensity of the solution of CDs and Hg 2 + (50 μ M) recover rapidly, which is linearly related ( R 2 2 = 0 . 9 9 5 7 ) to the concentration of I − in the range from 0 to 70 μ M, the detection limit for I − was calculated to be 0.084 μ M. Moreover, the developed method to detect Hg 2 + and I − was evaluated in real examples, and the fluorescence switching can sensitively and selectively detect Hg 2 + and I − over some potentially interfering ions, the recoveries were up to 97.8–107.0% and 96.7–106.6%, respectively.

Novel amphiphilic rhamnogalacturonnan I-based nanomicelles for targeted delivery of curcumin to hepatocellular carcinoma cells

Yuejiao Wu,Jian Yang,Ke Shen,Liyan Liu,Jing Cao,Zhaomei Wang

Curcumin (Cur) is a bioactive nutraceutical with great potential in biological, nutritional, and medical applications. However, these applications are limited by various factors such as insufficient ingestion, low aqueous solubility, and relatively high toxicity to normal cells. To tackle these obstacles, we synthesized a novel Cur-modified-rhamnogalacturonan (RG-C) nano-micelle carrier to target-deliver Cur to hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells via specific recognition of RG-I by the overexpressed surface galactin-3 receptor. Fourier transfer infrared, UV–vis, and 1 H NMR analyses confirmed the conjugation between RG and Cur RG-C loaded with Cur (RG-CC) was formed via self-assembly in an aqueous solution with a drug loading efficiency of 12.2%. RG-CC micelle was ellipsoidal or cubic with a size ranging between 100 and 200 nm by scanning electron microscopy observation. Cur release from RG-CC exhibited a controlled and pH-dependent manner with 50% at pH 5.0 in contrast to 5% at pH 7.4 after 24 h exposure. RG-CC possessed more potent anti-proliferative activity against HepG2 cells than normal embryonic kidney 293T cells. Compared to free Cur, both the anti-proliferative effect and uptake of RG-CC were significantly higher in HepG2 cells as revealed from laser confocal microscopy and flow cytometry analyses. RG-CC was a promising anticancer candidate and deserves further preclinical and clinical investigations.

Nanopore-based single-molecule investigation of the effects of anthracycline anticancer drugs on i-motif

Zhenzhao Wang,Lili Liu,Zhen Li,Linna Li,Xingtong Liu,Rikun Cui,Fujun Yao,Lei Tian,Xiaofeng Kang,YanLi Guo

Intercalated binding of anthracycline anticancer drugs to DNA is associated with anticancer mechanisms. The i-motif, a cytosine-rich DNA secondary structure found in the promoter region of oncogenes, is a primary target for anticancer drugs action. Therefore, it is significant to study the interaction between anthracycline drugs and i-motif for cancer therapy using simple, rapid and low-cost analytical methods. Here, we utilized α-HL protein nanopore, which offers high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio to investigate the conformational transition of human telomere i-motif induced by various anthracycline drugs at the single-molecule level. Our results revealed for the first time that anthracyclines drugs could induced the unfolding of i-motif into hairpin DNA. Additionally, our experiment captured the current signal of the intermediate state during the unfolding of i-motif into hairpin DNA, a signal difficult to obtain by conventional analytical tools such as circular dichroism (CD) and UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis). This research provides a novel tool for investigating the interaction between small molecule and DNA and lays the foundation for future screening of drugs acting on i-motif targets, as well as analyzing their therapeutic mechanism.

Synthesis, characterization and luminescent properties of copper(I) halide complexes containing biphenyl bidentate phosphine ligand

Bu-Lin Chen,Li Liu,Xin-Xin Zhong,Abdullah M. Asiri,Khalid A. Alamry,Guang-Hua Li,Fa-Bao Li,Nian-Yong Zhu,Wai-Yeung Wong,Hai-Mei Qin

Copper(I) halide complexes having thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence have attracted much attention. Here, a series of four-coordinate dinuclear copper(I) halide complexes, [CuX(bpbp)]2 (bpbp = 2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)biphenyl, X = I (1), Br (2) and Cl (3)), were synthesized, and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were investigated. The structural analysis reveals that two copper(I) centers are bridged by two halogen ligands to form a dinuclear structure with a four-membered Cu2X2 ring. These complexes exhibit yellow to blue emission in the solid state at room temperature and have peak emission wavelengths at 575–487 nm with microsecond lifetimes (τ = 6.2–19.8 μs) and low emission quantum yields (<0.01%). The emissions of 1–3 originate from MLCT, XLCT, and IL (intraligand) transitions. Three complexes displayed good thermal stability.

Coptisine exerts anti-tumour effects in triple-negative breast cancer by targeting mitochondrial complex I

Yunfu Shen,You Yang,Zi Wang,Wanjun Lin,Na Feng,Meina Shi,Jiachen Liu,Wenzhe Ma

Background and Purpose Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor prognosis due to limited therapeutic options. Recent studies have shown that TNBC is highly dependent on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of coptisine, a novel compound that inhibits the complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), as a treatment for TNBC. Experimental Approach In this study, mitochondrial metabolism in TNBC was analysed by bioinformatics. In vitro and in vivo experiments (in mice) were conducted to evaluate the potential of coptisine as an ETC complex I-targeting therapeutic agent and to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying coptisine-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. The therapeutic effect of coptisine was assessed in TNBC cells and xenograft mouse model. Key Results We demonstrated that mitochondrial ETC I was responsible for this metabolic vulnerability in TNBC. Furthermore, a naturally occurring compound, coptisine, exhibited specific inhibitory activity against this complex I. Treatment with coptisine significantly inhibited mitochondrial functions, reprogrammed cellular metabolism, induced apoptosis and ultimately inhibited the proliferation of TNBC cells. Additionally, coptisine administration induced prominent growth inhibition that was dependent on the presence of a functional complex I in xenograft mouse models. Conclusion and Implications Altogether, these findings suggest the promising potential of coptisine as a potent ETC complex I inhibitor to target the metabolic vulnerability of TNBC. Graphical

Mononuclear Gold(I) Acetylide Complexes with Urea Group: Synthesis, Characterization, Photophysics, and Anion Sensing Properties

Yu-Peng Zhou,Mei Zhang,Yu-Hao Li,Qi-Rui Guan,Fang Wang,Zhuo-Jia Lin,Chi-Keung Lam,Xiao-Long Feng,Hsiu-Yi Chao

A series of mononuclear gold(I) acetylide complexes with urea moiety, R′3PAuC≡CC6H4-4-NHC(O)NHC6H4-4-R (R′ = cyclohexyl, R = NO2 (2a), CF3 (2b), Cl (2c), H (2d), CH3 (2e), tBu (2f), OCH3 (2g); R′ = phenyl, R = NO2 (3a), OCH3 (3b); R′ = 4-methoxyphenyl, R = H (4a), OCH3 (4b)), have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of Ph3PAuC≡CC6H4-4-NHC(O)NHC6H4-4-NO2 (3a) and (4-CH3OC6H4)3PAuC≡CC6H4-4-NHC(O)NHC6H5 (4a) have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Complexes 2a–2g, 3b, and 4a–4b show intense luminescence both in the solid state and in degassed THF solution at 298 K. Anion binding properties of complexes 2a–2g, 3a–3b, and 4a–4b have been studied by UV–vis and 1H NMR titration experiments. In general, the log K values of 2a–2g with the same anion in THF depend on the substituent R on the acetylide ligand of 2a–2g: R = NO2 (2a) > CF3 (2b) ≥ Cl (2c) > H (2d) > CH3 (2e) ≈ tBu (2f) ≥ OCH3 (2g). Complex 2a with NO2 group shows the dramatic color change toward F– in DMSO, which provides an access of naked eye detection of F–.

Astragaloside I from Astragalus Attenuates Diabetic Kidney Disease by Regulating HDAC3/Klotho/TGF-β1 Loop

Xiaowei Zhang,Jiajun Wang,Shixie Xiang,Liang Zhao,Mingzhen Lv,Yafei Duan,Gai Gao,Pan Wang,Jenny Jie Chen,Jiangyan Xu,Zhishen Xie,Zhenqiang Zhang

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has become the primary cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), causing an urgent need for preventive strategies for DKD. Astragaloside I (ASI), a bioactive saponin extracted from Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge has been demonstrated to possess a variety of biological activities. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of ASI in DKD and the underlying molecular mechanism using db/db mice in vivo and high glucose (HG)-induced SV40-MES-13 cells in vitro . The results indicated that ASI significantly ameliorated renal dysfunction and mitigated the pathological alterations in the renal tissues of db/db mice. Moreover, ASI was found to reduce the levels of renal fibrosis makers and suppress the activation of TGF- β 1/Smad2/3 pathway in both db/db mice and HG-induced SV40-MES-13 cells. Furthermore, ASI downregulated HDAC3 expression, upregulated Klotho expression, and enhanced Klotho release. ASI is directly bound to HDAC3, and the beneficial effects of ASI on Klotho/TGF- β 1/Smad2/3-mediciated renal fibrosis in DKD were reversed by the HDAC3 agonist ITSA-1. In conclusion, ASI attenuates renal fibrosis in DKD, and may act through concurrently inhibiting HDAC3 and TGF- β 1, thereby regulating HDAC3-mediciated Klotho/TGF- β 1/Smad2/3 pathway.

Songhao Yu,Guifen Tian,Liduan Li,Fei Wang,Kefeng Wang,Junyu Lei,Haijun Hao,Qinghong Xu

TpFO-PA, a novel spherical hollow mesoporous polyamide, was firstly synthesized by the reaction among 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB), furylamine and oxalyl chloride in using silica-gel nanoparticle as hard template, and the composite Cu(I)@TpFO-PA with high catalytic activities in C-N coupling reactions between (hetero)aryl bromide and (hetero)aryl amines under mild conditions was prepared basing on presence of N in the framework. A maximum activity of the catalyst with yield of C-N coupling product were about 311.9 g (product) /mol Cu(I) ·h and 95 % respectively, and the activity could be maintained at least 5 times after the catalyst was reused. The composite Cu(I)@TpFO-PA is a few heterogeneous catalysts reported in catalyzing coupling reaction between aromatic amines and brominated aromatic compounds.

Performance and mechanism study on the degradation of RhB by I-g-C3N4@MoO3 heterojunction

Hao Yang,Li Han,Dongrui Hou,Yongchang Liu,Shuaijun Huang,Zirui Peng,Zirui Yang,Tianliang Lu,Xiaoqin Si,Xin liu,Jinrong Li,Jianfeng Wang

A series of S-scheme heterojunctions, XCN@MoO 3 (XCN@M, X = Cl, Br, I), were synthesized via a simple thermal polymerization, and the effect of halogen doping on construction of S-scheme heterojunctions was systematically explored. The ICN@M heterojunction showed exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving 100 % degradation of 50 mg/L RhB in 90 min, 40.37 times and 2.34 times higher than pure g-C 3 N 4 and CN@M, respectively. Notably, ICN@M outperformed CN@M and some other photocatalysts reported. DFT result revealed halogen doping reduced the work function of CN, proved the maximum work function difference of ICN@M and the formation of the strongest built-in electric field between the surface of MoO 3 with an electron-rich region and the surface of ICN with a hole-rich region, thus facilitating electron transfer at the heterojunction interface, reducing recombination of photogenerated carriers and promoting the catalytic performance. Fukui function and frontier orbital theory identified a possible degradation pathway of RhB dominated by ∙O 2 – and 1 O 2 and the toxicity of final products during the photocatalysis degradation of RhB was evaluated. This work highlighted the importance of work function differences in designing photocatalyst heterostructures and offered a new option for environmental treatment.
