Nanofiltration represents an efficient technology for mono/divalent ions separation, such as Mg 2+ /Li + mixtures which are crucial for lithium extraction from salt lakes. This work shows that charge intensification of loose structure nanofiltration membranes is an effective way to reconcile high flux with Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity. A new electrolyte monomer (QTHIM) containing quadruple imidazolium and hydroxyl groups was synthesized to react with residual acyl chloride groups on the nascent polyethyleneimine-based polyamide membranes (PEI-TMC), leading to the formation of a high-permeance nanofiltration membrane (PEI-TMC-QTHIM). The modified membrane highlights loose structures combined with enhanced positive charge, exhibiting high water permeance (∼33 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ), good MgCl 2 rejection (∼92%) and high flux to 100 Mg 2+ /Li + ratio mixture (∼170 L m −2 h −1 ). Notably, flux of the modified membrane is ca. 6 times as high as that of the nascent membrane.

A lithium metal battery (LMBs) is an excellent battery system for advanced electrochemical energy storage. However, the growth of lithium dendrites, the accumulation of inactive lithium, and the side reactions between lithium metal and electrolytes limit the cycling stability of LMBs. Herein, we introduce KI additive into lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)/ether-based electrolyte and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 )/ester-based electrolyte for cycling stability improvement of LMBs. Cu-mesh@Ag||Li half-cell with 0.01 M KI additive exhibits a Coulombic efficiency as high as 98.8 % over 200 cycles. The improved performance due to the electrostatic shielding effect formed by K + at low concentration and the rapid recovery of inactive lithium by iodine redox. The corresponding Li||Li symmetrical cell shows an outstanding lifespan of 1400 h at 1.0 mA cm −2 with 1.0 mAh cm −2 . Meanwhile, in the 1 M LiTFSI + 0.01 M KI electrolyte, the Cu-mesh@Ag-Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) full cell holds capacity retention of 91.7 % over 800cycles at 2.0 C, the Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) full cell possesses much better capacity retention of 54 % after 500 cycles at 1.0 C. This work offers a cost-effective proposal to improve application potential with the electrolyte engineering of rechargeable Li metal batteries.

The nitrogen-doped MXene carbon nanosheet-nickel (N-M@CNi) powder was successfully prepared by a combined process of electrostatic attraction and annealing strategy, and then applied as the separator coating in lithium–sulfur batteries. The morphology and structure of the N-M@CNi were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption method. The strong LiPS adsorption ability and high conductivity are associated with the N-doped carbon nanosheet-Ni modified surface. The modified separator offers the cathode of Li–S cell with greater sulfur utilization, better high-rate adaptability, and more stable cycling performance compared with the pristine separator. At 0.2 C the cell with N-M@CNi separator delivers an initial capacity of 1309 mAh g−1. More importantly, the N-M@CNi separator is able to handle a cathode with 3.18 mg cm−2sulfur loading, delivering a capacity decay rate of 0.043% with a high capacity retention of 95.8%. Therefore, this work may provide a feasible approach to separator modification materials towards improved Li-S cells with improved stability. Keywords:MXene;carbon nanosheets;lithium–sulfur batteries;modified separator

The cyan emission band contains blue and green light regions, which can simplify the fabrication process of white light-emitting diodes and help promote the development of solid-state lighting. In this paper, a series of Eu 2+ singly doped and Eu 2+ and Li + co-doped cyan light-emitting KAlSiO 4 : x Eu 2+ , y Li + materials were synthesized using the high temperature solid-state method. It was found that the incorporation of 10% Li + could increase the emission intensity of the KAlSiO 4 :0.02Eu 2+ sample by up to a factor of ∼3. This also shifted the emission color of the sample from blue-cyan (472 nm) to cyan (485 nm), and the quantum yield was increased from 71.5% to 93.3%. When the temperature is increased to 150 °C, the peak emission intensity was increased from 75.9% to 92.7% of that at room temperature. DFT calculations were used to demonstrate that the KAlSiO 4 phosphor host possesses a wide bandgap of 4.86 eV and the experimentally-determined optical bandgap of the phosphor was 5.6 eV. The phosphor was combined with a commercial red phosphor, and these together were used as the emitting components in a white LED package. The characteristics of the white LED when using two representative samples of the phosphor (KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ and KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + ) were examined; these white LEDs had color rendering indices of 82 and 95, and color temperatures of 5656 K and 4126 K respectively. This work demonstrates the significant potential that KAlSiO 4 :0.02 Eu 2+ , 0.1 Li + phosphors have in the field of LED lighting.

Graphical Everyday I'm shuttling : A functional lithiated Nafion-decorated separator (Li-Nafion@PE) exhibits a good inhibition for redox shuttling in LiI-containing Li-O 2 batteries. The fabrication combines the wide universality, easy operation, and suitability for mass production. A cell with as-prepared Li-Nafion@PE exhibits considerable cycling stability and good reversibility associated with desired Li 2 O 2 generation and degradation. Although the employment of redox mediator (RM) is an effective strategy to reduce the overpotential by avoiding the direct electrochemical oxidization of Li 2 O 2 during charging, an unexpected redox shuttling in Li-O 2 system leads to RM degradation and continuous deterioration of Li anode, finally resulting in a limited cycling stability. Here, a functional lithiated Nafion-modified separator was firstly introduced to inhibit the shuttle effect by coulombic/electrostatic interactions in RM-involved Li-O 2 batteries. The fabrication of the separator involved easily accessible raw materials and an easy-to-operate process, which made it suitable for large-scale production. The enhancement of lithiated process on electrochemical properties was systematically investigated. In addition, the influence of decorated amount on cycling stability was also studied. Furthermore, the functional contribution of lithiated Nafion on inhibition of redox shuttling and the working mechanism for cells with and without as-prepared separators were proposed. This work can give an insight into the development of functional separator ( i . e ., activity issue) and the suppression of parasitic reactions ( i . e ., selectivity issue) in Li-O 2 batteries.

Upon evaluating the pseudocapacitance contribution ( k 1 v ) of electrode materials, the exact capacity (also termed as actual pseudocapacity , k Q ) is usually ignored. However, there is a significant variation between k 1 v and k Q . Herein, we designed tunable in situ core-shell electrode materials to examine the variation between the k 1 v and k Q . Using nickel foam (NF) as the starting material, the internal structure of NF is systematically controlled via in situ strategy to obtain the optimized nickel oxide core–shell architectures (denoted NFNTO). Despite the directly oxidized NF (denoted NFO) exhibits a higher k 1 v (79.1%) than the NFNTO (47.6%), the k Q of NFNTO is ≈2.3 fold larger than NFO at the highest current density of 8.0 mA cm −2 . The higher k Q can be attributed to the integration of titanium that shortens the Li + diffusion pathway, boosts the diffusion co-efficient and improves the electronic conductivity towards achieving enhanced ionic transport.

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have attracted much attention for high energy density solid-state lithium-metal batteries owing to their flexibility, low cost, and easy scale-up. However, the unstable Li/CPE interface is always challengeable for the practical utilization of CPEs. Herein, a polymer interlayer containing K + prepared by ultraviolet (UV)-curing precursor solution is coated on Li surface to stabilize the interface between poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) composite electrolytes and Li anode. Benefiting from the physical barrier of the interlayer, the continuous decomposition of PVDF is restrained and the intimate contact between electrode and electrolyte is also achieved to reduce the interface impedance. Moreover, the added K + is utilized to further regulate smooth Li deposition. As a consequence, the symmetric Li∣Li cell with coated Li demonstrates steady cycling at 0.4 mAh·cm −2 and a high critical current density of 1 mA·cm −2 . The assembled Li∣LiFePO 4 cell presents outstanding cycling stability (capacity retention of 90% after 400 cycles at 1 C) and good rate performance. The associated pouch cell performs impressive flexibility and safety. This work provides a convenient strategy to achieve stable Li/PVDF interface for high-performance PVDF-based solid state Li metal batteries.

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) based on solid state electrolytes have attracted much attention for their high safety and energy density . Li 29 Zr 9 Nb 3 O 40 powders as Li-ionic conductors were prepared using a sol-gel method in this work, and the related ceramics were sintered in air or in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in which sample was covered with corundum crucible. All the sintered ceramics are consisted of orthorhombic phase. Li 29 Zr 9 Nb 3 O 40 ceramic sintered in oxygen-deficient atmosphere has conductivity of 1.03 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature and has ionic transference number of 0.9996, while the ceramic sintered in air has conductivity of 4.41 × 10 −5 S cm −1 . The influence of oxygen vacancy on the migration path of Li-ion was discussed. The migration paths of Li-ions between two kinds of Li 29 Zr 9 Nb 3 O 40 ceramics were simulated and visualized by method of bond valence site energy with VESTA software.

In the search for dielectric material with high energy storage density, a ceramic system of 0.8Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 –0.2K 1- x Li x TaO 3 (NBT-KLT- x , x = 0.1–0.5) is proposed in this work. The addition of Li 2 CO 3 is conducive to the decrease of sintering temperature of ceramics. Moreover, the XRD diffraction data of sintered ceramics indicate that pure perovskite phase showing the pseudo-cubic structure can be achieved when x = 0.1–0.3 while the excessive addition of Li 2 CO 3 leads to the formation of pyrochlore phase. Based on the Rietveld refinement and Raman results, the Li + doping in the NBT-KLT- x solid solutions ( x = 0.1–0.3) can improve the phase content of P 4bm, induce the lattice expansion and structural change towards a higher-symmetry phase. TEM observation also demonstrates the reduction in the size of polar nanoregions. With increasing x from 0.1 to 0.5, both the oxygen vacancy concentration and grain size display a tendency to decrease first and then increase. For the x = 0.2 ceramics with the lowest oxygen vacancy concentration and grain size, the largest electrical breakdown strength and lowest polarization hysteresis are achieved, giving an excellent recoverable energy storage density of 4.86 J/cm 3 under 32 kV/mm, accompanied by a high efficiency of 90.46 %. Additionally, the recoverable energy density achieves a high level of ∼3.5 J/cm 3 and energy storage efficiency is larger than 80 % over 28–160 °C, suggesting the outstanding temperature stability.

Fast Li + kinetics are essential for high energy lithium metal batteries, yet the factors governing these kinetics remain unclear. Here, we decipher a quantitative structure-kinetics relationship by demonstrating that polarizability dictates Li + desolvation and transport. Specifically, the inert solvents with low polarizability generate weak induced dipoles under interfacial electric fields, which keeps the structural integrity of anion-rich solvates. These intact solvates improve the Li + kinetics via coupling Li + hopping and electrostatic repulsion to anions, as evidenced by the linear relationship between polarizability and desolvation energy. Meanwhile, the induced more inorganic-rich solid-electrolyte interphase further accelerates the Li + kinetics. Accordingly, the tailored electrolyte enables Li | |LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cells to achieve a stable cycling (0.2 C charge/0.5 C discharge, 1 C = 200 mA g −1 based on the NCM811 positive electrode) with 95% capacity retention after 200 cycles at −35 °C and powers a 7.5-Ah lithium metal pouch cell (0.1 C charge/0.3 C discharge, 1 C = 200 mA g −1 based on the NCM811 positive electrode) with a specific energy of 541.6 Wh kg −1 (based on the full cell mass). This work decodes the polarizability-governed Li + kinetics and establishes practical electrolyte guidelines for realizing high energy lithium metal batteries.

The Li-excess rocksalt materials have opened a vast new chemical space to develop low-cost and high-energy-density cathode materials for satisfying the rising market demand of rechargeable batteries. However, those materials suffer from capacity and voltage decay on cycling due to irreversible structural rearrangement. Quantitatively characterizing reversible capacity are decisive to collaboratively improve capacity and cycling stability, but very challenging to predict for experiencing complicated redox. A “state-accumulated charge-transfer gap” model is introduced to continuously accumulate electrochemical reversibility effect during the whole redox process . This is demonstrated through rational design and preparation of several representative compositions in the cation-disordered Li-Mn-Ti-O-F chemical space. Based on electrochemical tests and first-principles studies, we found that Li 1.2 Mn 0.6 Ti 0.2 O 1.67 F 0.33 with almost complete Mn 4+ oxidation states and a little anionic redox in the end of charge could achieve high capacity of 330 mAh g −1 in first cycle and 225 mAh g −1 after 20 cycles, which reaches the best comprehensive electrochemical performance in reported Li-rich materials. The present study opens a new avenue to design Li-rich cathode materials with high reversible capacity.

Advanced ion transportation channels aided by charge and suitable aperture play a crucial role in achieving precise separation of ions. Here, we report a MOF composite membrane with electropositive surface and sub-nanometer-sized ion transport channels for efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The membranes were fabricated using MOF “porous monomers” and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) through interfacial polymerization, and subsequently modified with amino-functionalized polyethyleneimine (PEI). The abundant porosity of the MOFs composite membrane includes the inner and the intergranular pores of MOF provided a rapid transport channel for Li + ions, and a superior Li + permeation rate of 0.68 mol m −2 h −1 (a 10 times enhancement compared to the currently leading MOF membranes). Moreover, the improved positively charged surface (from −78 mV to + 4 mV at pH = 7) and reduced mean pore diameter (from 1.13 nm to 0.8 nm) of the membrane caused a remarkable selectivity of 13.2 for Li + /Mg 2+ . The design concept of the above MOFs based membrane provides a novel approach for developing high-quality MOF composite membranes for improving Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance.
