Alveolar bone defects from periodontitis are common clinical challenges in dentistry. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) proves effective, yet current membranes like Bio-Gide, suffer from inadequate mechanical strength, rapid degradation, and no antibacterial activity, limiting clinical performance. Asymmetric bilayer nanofibrous membranes with functional zoning offer a promising solution. Herein, we fabricated an asymmetric bilayer nanofibrous membrane via coaxial electrospinning, consisting of a dense PLGA-GO/PVA-MgCl2 outer layer and a highly porous PLGA-GO/PVA-MgCl2 inner layer. The dense layer prevents rapid soft-tissue cells invasion into the defect area while providing antibacterial effects. The porous layer facilitates osteoblast adhesion and proliferation. Graphene oxide (GO) and Mg2+ exert synergistic action: GO facilitates initial bacterial attachment, protein adsorption, and cell adhesion, while released Mg2+ disrupts bacterial membrane integrity and metabolic pathways. This results in durable bacterial killing and enhanced osteogenic effects compared to either component alone. The GO-enhanced membrane exhibited a Young’s modulus of 84.8 MPa and a matched degradation rate (23% over 2 months), providing mechanical support while maintaining structural integrity. This property combination addresses the fragility issue of Bio-Gide membranes. In vitro studies demonstrate that the dense layer effectively blocked soft-tissue invasion while permitting cell proliferation. The porous layer, with high porosity and sustained Mg2+ release, promoted MC3T3-E1 migration and differentiation. Furthermore, the membrane exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, cytocompatibility, and osteogenic capacity, as evidenced by significantly enhanced bone regeneration in a rat cranial defect model. These findings indicate the great potential of this multifunctional asymmetric bilayer membrane for clinical applications in alveolar bone defect repair.

The corrosion susceptibility of magnesium alloys is the most formidable challenge in large-scale applications. In this work, a highly corrosion-resistant coating was fabricated on a magnesium-alloy surface to protect the underlying substrate. Unlike conventional hydrothermal methods, this approach does not improve corrosion resistance by altering the coating’s precursor materials; instead, it focuses on investigating grain behavior at different temperatures to regulate the coating’s corrosion resistance. By extending the heating duration, the coating exhibited increased thickness, grain refinement, and a denser, more ordered arrangement, which effectively blocked corrosive ions and consequently led to a significant improvement in corrosion resistance. To verify corrosion-resistance performance, the as-prepared coatings were immersed in a saturated sodium chloride solution for 15 days; the coatings exhibited almost no corrosion, whereas the magnesium substrate had nearly completely dissolved by day 10. Additionally, when coated samples were immersed in an HCl solution at pH 2 for 15 days, only slight surface corrosion was observed on the coatings. Electrochemical tests indicated that when the heating duration was extended to 5 h, corrosion resistance reached its maximum: the coating’s impedance was six orders of magnitude higher than that of the substrate, and its corrosion current density decreased by five orders of magnitude, consistent with the immersion tests. Here, grain refinement and dense packing played critical roles by reducing porosity and crack density, thereby blocking the ingress of chloride and other corrosive ions. These results further confirm that grain refinement achieved by prolonging the heating duration provides a novel strategy for enhancing the performance of corrosion-resistant coatings. Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is common in acidic orchard soils and can limit fruit crop growth and quality. This study evaluated whether foliar-applied magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) could improve Mg nutrition and fruit quality in ‘Ninghaibai’ loquat grown under Mg-deficient acidic soil conditions. Pot and field experiments were conducted using water as the control and MgSO 4 -50eq as an equimolar Mg comparator. MgO NPs showed a concentration-dependent effect, and 200 mg/L produced the best overall performance among the tested concentrations. At this concentration, total biomass increased by 47.27%, compared with CK, accompanied by enhanced chlorophyll accumulation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and Mg uptake. In fruit, 200 mg/L MgO NPs increased soluble solids content by 45.67% and reduced titratable acidity by 53.26%, while also improving fruit size and sugar–acid balance. Leaf transcriptome analysis suggested that MgO NPs altered the expression of genes involved in metabolism, stress response, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. At the 50 mg/L level, MgO NPs produced stronger responses than the equimolar MgSO 4 treatment in Mg uptake, nutrient acquisition, and several fruit-quality traits. However, excessive application at 500 mg/L weakened growth and quality improvement. Overall, foliar application of 200 mg/L MgO NPs may represent a promising strategy for improving loquat growth and fruit quality under the tested Mg-deficient conditions.

The construction of efficient interfacial active sites in metal oxides remains a major challenge for driving the CO 2 cycloaddition under mild conditions. Herein, we engineered a Co x Mg 1-x O solid solution catalyst via a controlled reduction strategy, which achieves near-atomic dispersion within the MgO lattice. The catalyst delivers 96 % yield of cyclic carbonate from epichlorohydrin at 90 °C and 0.1 MPa CO 2 , surpassing the performance of benchmark MgO and Co 3 O 4 catalysts and maintaining stability over five cycles. Structural and spectroscopic characterization (XRD, XPS, UV-Vis) combined with DFT calculations reveal that the high activity originates from synergistic Co-O V -Mg interfacial sites, where Lewis acidic Co 2 + activates epoxides and adjacent oxygen vacancies facilitate CO 2 adsorption. This synergistic effect lowers the energy barrier for the rate-determining ring-opening step to 0.37 eV. This work demonstrates the rational design of oxide solid solutions to create cooperative interfacial sites for efficient CO 2 conversion under mild conditions.

In this work, two novel hexagonal magnetoplumbite-type LaMGa 11 O 19 (M = Mg, Zn) ceramics were prepared and deeply investigated. XRD patterns, SAED and HRTEM images analysis results demonstrated that the LaMGa 11 O 19 (M = Mg, Zn) ceramics are formation of hexagonal magnetoplumbite structure with a space group of P 6 3 / mmc . Both ceramics exhibited relatively high density (>95 %) and large positive τ f (+145.1 and + 136.7 ppm/°C), combined with moderate ε r around 20 and reasonable Q × f values of 19,328 GHz and 22,197 GHz, which be used as a temperature compensator for LTCC applications. The intense rattling effect of La 3+ cations resulted in abnormally high dielectric constant with a large positive variation by a factor of over 0.70 from the theoretical values calculated using the Clausius-Mossotti formula according to each ion's polarizability, negative τ αm , and positive τ f values. The P–V–L chemical bond theory analysis and impedance spectroscopy showed that the large dielectric loss might result from the high ionicity of the La-O bond and conduction loss, thus leading to relatively low Q × f for the LaMGa 11 O 19 (M = Mg, Zn) ceramics.

Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 (NBT) and its acceptor-doped perovskites , as lead-free piezoelectric materials before, have been found to be excellent oxygen-ion conductors with potential applications in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Among them, the Bi deficient and B-site Mg doped sodium bismuth titanate (Na 0.5 Bi 0.49 Ti 0.98 Mg 0.02 O 2.965 , NBTM) exhibits a remarkable oxygen ionic conductivity . Here, we report a structural analysis on NBT and NBTM ceramics using high-temperature in situ neutron diffraction (NPD) to gain insight into the effects of Mg doping on ionic conductivity and structure. Both perovskite oxides exhibit two consecutive phase transformations from R 3 c to P 4 bm at ∼400 °C and from P 4 bm to Pm 3 ¯ m at ∼600 °C. The effects of Bi deficiency and Mg substitution on oxygen vacancy concentration and ion displacements are revealed. In addition, a NBTM supported single cell consisting of Ag-NBTM cathode and Ni-NBTM anode is fabricated to evaluate the possibility of its application in intermediate-temperature SOFCs. The structural stability of NBTM is still a major concern that hinders its utilization at high temperature and under reducing atmosphere.

In this study, a composite coating of polycaprolactone layer and polydopamine-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/naringenin (NG) was prepared on the surface of a micro-arc oxidized (MAO) pretreated magnesium alloy by a two-step method. The findings demonstrate that the composite coating exhibits favorable corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, photo-thermal antimicrobial, and bone-enhancing characteristics. Compared with the MAO coating, the corrosion rate of the composite coating was significantly reduced from about 0.087 mm/y to 0.066 mm/y. The antimicrobial efficiency of the coating against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) under 808 nm laser irradiation was found to reach 93 % and 99 %, respectively. Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity assays, dead and live cell staining, and immunoblotting analysis showed that the coating exhibited favorable biocompatibility and osteogenic activity. This novel coating may have good application prospects in the treatment of osteoporosis-related fractures.

Lead-free multiferroic composite ceramics, KNbO 3 -AFe 2 O 4 (KNO-AFO, A = Mg, Zn, Ni, Co), are synthesized. The microstructure and property characterizations reveal that the introduced AFO can intrinsically modulate the optical/ferroelectric/ferromagnetic properties due to the independent existence of the two phases in the composite ceramics, including the significantly narrowing of the optical bandgap from the intrinsic ~3.2 eV of KNO down to ~1.2 eV, of which the modulation behavior is in line with the prediction of the first-principles calculations, and more importantly, the maintaining of the excellent ferromagneticity (with a remnant magnetization value of 0.8 – 36.5 emu/g) and ferroelectricity (~1 – 4 µC/cm 2 ) but for slightly deteriorating of the leakage as compared to the anti-magnetic KNO. In addition, different spinel ferrites composited to KNO present different functions for the ferroelectric/ferromagnetic properties, i.e., the ortho-spinel phase mainly retaining the ferroelectricity of the composite ceramics while the anti-spinel phase responsible for the ferromagnetism , especially in the KNO-CFO ceramics that not only have the strongest narrowing effect of the optical bandgap but also demonstrate the most excellent magnetic properties . This makes the composite ceramics promising for a wide range of applications in ferric-based storage and photovoltaics , and should offer more options for the research of multifunctional materials and devices.

The electro-deoxidation of MgO does not proceed efficiently due to the electrical insulation properties of MgO and large molar volume of metallic magnesium. In this experiment, an attempt was done to prepare Mg-Zr alloy from their oxides using the method of electro-deoxidation. The electrochemical mechanism of the deoxidation process of MgO, ZrO 2 and MgO-ZrO 2 composite was studied through cyclic voltammetry using metallic cavity electrode (MCE). There was an intermediate phase (Zr 3 O) in the reduction process of ZrO 2 . The electro-deoxidation of MgO occurred for MgO-ZrO 2 composite in CaCl 2 -NaCl molten salt. Moreover, the electro-deoxidation of MgO was promoted by the addition of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The formation of metal phase Mg was confirmed by XRD, EDS, Raman spectroscopy, and inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy. The electro-deoxidation products showed significant differences with the concentration of PVB and the ratio between MgO and ZrO 2 . The electro-deoxidation of MgO and ZrO 2 was favorable when the PVB concentration was 5.0% (wt.%). Pure metal phase of Mg-Zr alloys was formed when the molar ratio of MgO and ZrO 2 was 1:2. The atomic fraction of Mg in the electrolytic product was ca. 28.0 mol.%. This work shows that MgO could be directly electro-deoxidized to Mg without the formation of intermediate phase oxide.

In this study, the impact of codoping Mg and Ti on the thermoelectric performance of AgSbTe2 materials was investigated. Through a two-step synthesis process involving slow cooling and spark plasma sintering, AgSb0.98–xMg0.02TixTe2 samples were prepared. The introduction of Mg and Ti dopants effectively suppressed the formation of the undesirable Ag2Te phase. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that Ti doping facilitated the band convergence, leading to a reduction in the effective mass of the carriers. This optimization enhanced carrier mobility and, consequently, electrical conductivity. Additionally, the codoping strategy resulted in the reinforcement of point defects, which contributed to a decrease in lattice thermal conductivity. The AgSb0.98–xMg0.02TixTe2 sample achieved a maximum figure of merit (ZT) value of 1.45 at 523 K, representing an 87% improvement over the undoped AgSbTe2 sample. The average ZT value over the temperature range of 323–573 K was 1.09, marking a significant enhancement in thermoelectric performance. This research demonstrates the potential of Mg and Ti codoping as a strategy to improve the thermoelectric properties of AgSbTe2-based materials.

Epoxy resin (EP) coating has high hydrophilicity and poor long-term corrosion resistance . In order to improve its protection ability, an EP-graphene oxide (GO)/SiO 2 multifunctional coating is fabricated on Mg-Zn-Ca alloy in this study, through a spin/spray assisted self-assembly technique. The morphologies and microstructures of the coated samples were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Hydrophobicity and self-cleaning property of the composite coating were tested by an optical contact angle meter and black graphite powders . The stability of the superhydrophobic surface was tested by rubbing with sandpaper and immersing in corrosion solution. The corrosion resistance of coated samples was tested in 3.5 % NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The GO sheets are uniformly dispersed in EP coating. EP-GO acts as a dense bottom layer, effectively promoting its adhesion with the superhydrophobic SiO 2 coating, and the water contact angle (WCA) values range from 158° to 168°. After stability testing, the WCA value of the superhydrophobic coating remains at a high level (115°–155°). The R ct of this composite coating was remarkably increased to 1.0 × 10 22 Ω/cm 2 , implying that the corrosion resistance was improved by eighteen orders of magnitude compared to bare substrate. These results show that the combination of the labyrinth effect and the hydrophobic surface extend the corrosion path and reduce the contact area of the corrosion solution with the coating, which strengthens the barrier effect of the composite coating. The composite coating exhibits superior corrosion resistance durability and self-cleaning property.

Mitochondrial dynamics play a crucial role in glioma progression by regulating cellular metabolism, proliferation, and survival. This study investigated the effects of desmopressin (dDAVP), a synthetic vasopressin analog, on mitochondrial function in human U87 MG glioma cells. Our results demonstrate that dDAVP treatment induces dose-dependent cytotoxicity while upregulating vasopressin type 2 receptor expression. The compound significantly increased oxidative stress markers and impaired mitochondrial function, as evidenced by reduced ATP production, compromised respiratory chain activity, and decreased oxygen consumption. Furthermore, dDAVP promoted mitochondrial fragmentation through Drp1 activation, enhancing its phosphorylation at Ser616 and subsequent mitochondrial translocation. Mechanistically, dDAVP was found to activate CaMKII signaling, which mediated the observed changes in Drp1 phosphorylation and mitochondrial dynamics. The CaMKII inhibitor KN-93 effectively reversed dDAVP-induced mitochondrial fragmentation, Drp1 phosphorylation, and energy metabolism impairment. The AVPR2 antagonist tolvaptan blocked dDAVP effects, confirming receptor specificity. These findings reveal that dDAVP disrupts mitochondrial homeostasis in glioma cells through AVPR2-mediated CaMKII-dependent regulation of Drp1 activity, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cell damage. The study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying dDAVP's effects on glioma cells and suggests potential therapeutic applications targeting the CaMKII-Drp1 axis in glioma treatment.
