Electrochemical sensor using NH2-MIL-88(Fe)-rGO composite for trace Cd2 +, Pb2 +, and Cu2 + detection

Shuo Duan,Yuming Huang

A novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of Cu 2   + , Pb 2   + and Cd 2   + , which was based on NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO composite modified glass carbon electrode (NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO/GCE). The NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO composite was facilely prepared by a one-step method and characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman spectrum and electrochemical methods. The stepwise GCE modified process was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical behaviors of Cu 2   + , Pb 2   + and Cd 2   + ions on the NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO/GCE were explored by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). It was found that NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO was capable of adsorbing Cu 2   + , Pb 2   + and Cd 2   + ions from aqueous solutions and the NH 2 -MIL-88(Fe)-rGO/GCE could enhance the electrochemical responses of Cu 2   + , Pb 2   + and Cd 2   + effectively. Important operational parameters such as electrolyte pH and deposition time were investigated and optimized for the determination of trace Cu 2   + , Pb 2   + and Cd 2   + ions. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed electrochemical sensor had a linear range of 0.005––0.3   μM for Cd 2   + , 0.01–0.3   μM for Pb 2   + and 0.005–0.05   μM for Cu 2   + , respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) are 4.9   nM for Cd 2   + , 10   nM for Pb 2   + and 3.6   nM for Cu 2   + , respectively. The proposed method has been successfully applied to determine three metal ions in water samples. The developed sensor promises simple preparation, fast operation, good sensitivity and excellent reusability, showing great potential for monitoring of water quality.

Synthesis of CNT@MIL-68(Al) composites with improved adsorption capacity for phenol in aqueous solution

Tongtong Han,Yuanlong Xiao,Minman Tong,Hongliang Huang,Dahuan Liu,Luyan Wang,Chongli Zhong

A series of CNT@MIL-68(Al) composites with different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loadings have been synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, PXRD, FT-IR, TGA, and N 2 adsorption. As evidenced from SEM and TEM images, the incorporation of CNTs can result in better dispersity of MIL-68(Al) in composites and smaller particle size than pure MIL-68(Al). Adding appropriate amounts of CNTs increases both the BET surface areas and the total volume of small micorpores (<16   Å), leading to largely improved performance of adsorptive removal of phenol from aqueous solution. In the industrial concentration range of phenol, the adsorption capacity of 0.75% CNT@MIL-68(Al) was improved up to 188.7% compared with the pristine MIL-68(Al), possibly due to the increase of small micropores introduced by the incorporation of CNTs. Regeneration experiments demonstrated that the composites are stable with good regenerability for at least five cycles. This work shows that the composites formed by the combination of CNTs and MOFs may find promising applications in liquid phase adsorption.

Metal–organic framework MIL-101 as a low background signal platform for label-free DNA detection

Jing Mei Fang,Fei Leng,Xi Juan Zhao,Xiao Li Hu,Yuan Fang Li

A label-free and sensitive fluorescence method for recognition of sequence-specific DNA using DNA-intercalating dye and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed. Here, MIL-101 (Cr3F(H2O)2O[(O2C)–C6H4–(CO2)]3·nH2O) is introduced as a quenching platform to decrease the high background fluorescence of SYBR Green I (SG)/probe DNA complex. Mechanism investigations show that MIL-101 can strongly adsorb the SG/probe DNA complex through π–π stacking and electrostatic interactions, and as a consequence, the fluorescence of the SG dye is greatly quenched. While in the presence of target DNA, the as-formed rigid double-stranded (ds) structure of DNA will be far away from the surface of MIL-101; meanwhile, the SG dye can be bound with the dsDNA in the mode of intercalation and minor groove binding, resulting in enhancement of the SG dye fluorescence. The increased signal-to-background ratio has a linear relationship with the concentration of target DNA in the range of 0.1–14 nM. It is confirmed that the detection limit is 73 pM (3σ), which is much lower than that based on the carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide platform. Moreover, one-base-mismatched target DNA can be discriminated effectively. With the introduction of MIL-101, the signal-to-background ratio has been improved ∼8-fold, demonstrating that MIL-101 is an efficient low-background signal platform.

Multifunctional polyoxometalates encapsulated in MIL-100(Fe): highly efficient photocatalysts for selective transformation under visible light

Ruowen Liang,Rui Chen,Fenfen Jing,Na Qin,Ling Wu

H3PMo12O40 molecules have been successfully encapsulated in the cavities of MIL-100(Fe) via a facile hydrothermal method (denoted as HPMo@MIL-100(Fe)). A series of characterization has corroborated the insertion of H3PMo12O40 within the cavities of MIL-100(Fe). The resulting HPMo@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposites have exhibited much higher photoactivity than the original-MIL-100(Fe) toward the photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols and the reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). The higher photoactivity of HPMo@MIL-100(Fe) can be attributed to the integrative effect of enhanced light absorption intensity and more efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The host porous structure of MIL-100(Fe) can achieve a uniform composition with H3PMo12O40, which is significantly important for producing highly reactive dispersed H3PMo12O40 molecules and enhancing the photocatalytic activity of HPMo@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposites. And the immobilized H3PMo12O40 molecules are more convenient for recycling. Importantly, almost no Fe and Mo ions leach from the MIL-100(Fe) during the reaction, which verifies the photostability of the HPMo@MIL-100(Fe). In addition, possible photocatalytic redox reaction mechanisms have been investigated.

Fabrication of a MIL-53(Al) Nanocomposite Membrane and Potential Application in Desalination of Dye Solutions

Huimin Ruan,Changmeng Guo,Hongwei Yu,Jiangnan Shen,Congjie Gao,Arcadio Sotto,Bart Van der Bruggen

This study reports the fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using immersion precipitation phase inversion for promising application in desalination of dye solutions. Aromatic poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) is used as the polymer material, and the metal–organic framework MIL-53(Al) is added to develop integrally skinned asymmetric membranes. Successful dispersion of MIL-53(Al) particles into the membrane-separating layer is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The optimum performance of the membranes is obtained at 0.5 wt % MIL-53(Al) concentration. In particular, the M-0.5 membrane is planned for use in separating dye/salt aqueous mixtures. It is observed that the M-0.5 membrane has a rejection for NaCl and Na2SO4 below 11% and 37%, respectively, in mixed salt/dye solutions. Additionally, the M-0.5 membrane is found to have a rejection rate of 83.9%, 98.3%, and 99.8% for nitroso-R salt, xylenol orange, and ponceau S, respectively, in mixed Na2SO4/dye solutions. The rejection rate for Na2SO4 is lower than that of some commercial nanofiltration membranes (NF90, NF270, and DK). The membrane is promising for dye desalination in industrial-scale applications.

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal via CPBr-modified MIL-88A@amine-functionalized GO: synthesis, performance, and mechanism

Hammad Eman N.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Abouelenein Saeyda A.,El-Subruiti Gehan

Water contamination by heavy metals, especially chromium (VI), poses a critical environmental issue due to its carcinogenic nature and persistence in the environment. Addressing this, the current study develops an efficient adsorbent, CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO, which utilizes the synergistic capabilities of Cetylpyridinium bromide–modified MIL-88A and amine-functionalized graphene oxide to enhance Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. The obtained results indicate that CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO achieves its highest removal efficacy at pH 2, where the interaction of CPBr and AmGO’s positively charged centers significantly contributes to the adsorption processes. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the composite’s adsorption capacity reached a maximum of 306.75 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second-order model along with the endothermic nature of the process. Although the presence of SO 4 2- ions significantly reduces adsorption capacity, other interfering ions including Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Cl - , and NO 3 - only slightly affect it. Remarkably, the composite maintains high removal efficiency, over 82%, even after 7 recycling tests, underscoring its potential for practical applications in water treatment systems. The proposed mechanism involves the contribution of electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, complexation, and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the removal process. This study not only offers a potent solution for Cr(VI) remediation but also contributes to sustainable water resource management.

Enhanced gaseous benzene degradation by bimetallic MIL-101(Fe, Cu) activated persulfate system: Efficiency and mechanism

Tao Tian,Jie Zhang,Sijie Ge,Lijiang Tian

Persulfate oxidation is a promising technology for air pollution control but still suffers from degrading refractory volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under mild conditions. Metal-doped metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a novel strategy to enhance persulfate activation and VOCs degradation. Herein, a novel bimetallic MIL-101 (Fe, Cu) is prepared for more effective degradation of gaseous benzene via persulfate activation. Under optimal conditions (Fe/Cu ratio of 1:4, persulfate concentration of 7 mM/L, pH of 5, and reaction temperature of 70 °C), the MIL-101(Fe1, Cu4) activated persulfate system achieves a benzene degradation efficiency of 79.1 %, a value significantly higher than that of MIL-101(Fe) (20.1 %). The enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺/Cu⁺ redox interactions facilitating the activation of persulfate and generation of radical species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate an increase in the adsorption energy of MIL-101(Fe) in the presence of Cu doping from −3.46 eV to −5.92 eV along with a rise in the Fermi energy level from 0.5 eV to 1.33 eV, enhancing the electron density and mobility. A reaction energy diagram is provided to illustrate the reaction pathways and transition states involved in the degradation of benzene. Overall, the incorporation of Cu in MOFs significantly enhances the efficiency of persulfate-based oxidation systems toward VOCs degradation.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of NH2-MIL-125(Ti)/SrTiO3 heterostructures by the piezoelectric effect of SrTiO3

Hongmin Dai,Xuan He,Xing Du,Weixin Li,Daheng Wang,Hui Chen,Wei Fang,Lei Zhao

Applying piezoelectric effect on modulating charge transport behavior was considered as one efficient strategy to make feasible charge separation in photocatalysts towards boosting hydrogen evolution performance. Here, with employing corona-poling treatment, SrTiO 3 is converted to be a piezoelectric component in the constructed type II NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/SrTiO 3 heterojunction . Since the piezoelectric field could tilt the band bending to a degree to be convenient for the charge transfer from SrTiO 3 to NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti), it is also favorable to offer additional active sites on SrTiO 3 to form dual reduction sites for the following piezo-photocatalytic reaction. Both the ameliorated surficial polarization and charge transfer trajectory in NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/SrTiO 3 type II heterojunction are devoted to the boosted hydrogen production rate for NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/SrTiO 3 -0.1 (NM/STO-0.1), that is up to 1562.3 μmol h −1  g −1 , 1.79 times higher than that of unpolarized NM/STO-0.1 (871.6 μmol h −1  g −1 ) and 2.35 times higher than that of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (663.8 μmol h −1  g −1 ), respectively. This research reported initially the assistant of SrTiO 3 with piezoelectric feature for enhanced performance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which could be one prominent strategy to achieve the reasonable design of efficient photocatalytic system.

Core/Shell Metal Oxides@MIL-53(Al) Nanoparticles as Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Wenjing Li,Weichen Wang,Mingyue Zhu,Peiao Cong,Daowei Gao,Rongyao Wang,Guozhu Chen

Metal oxides@metal–organic framework (MOFs)-based core/shell nanostructures demonstrate promising potential in catalytic hydrogenations. However, the direct nucleation and growth of MOFs on the topologically diverse surfaces of metal oxides face significant challenges due to the high interfacial energy resulting from topological mismatches. Herein, we present a facile in situ growth strategy for directly assembling an MIL-53(Al) layer on the surface of CeO2 nanospheres at low temperatures by mixing and stirring CeO2 nanospheres and MIL-53(Al) precursors without requiring sacrificial templates or additional surface modifications. Moreover, key factors such as reaction time, temperature, and the types of aluminum salts and ligands are systematically explored to comprehensively understand the nucleation behavior of MOFs shells. Notably, when active Pt nanoparticles are sandwiched between the CeO2 core and the MIL-53(Al) shell, the MIL-53(Al) effectively stabilizes the Pt nanoparticles and enhances the selectivity of hydrocinnamaldehyde in cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. CeO2/Pt@MIL-53(Al) achieved more than twice the selectivity for HCAL compared to CeO2/Pt and even outperformed Pt/MIL-53(Al). Undoubtedly, this study provides distinctive insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms of MOFs on metal oxides, expands the strategies for fabricating metal oxides@MOFs core/shell nanostructure, and proposes innovative ideas and possibilities for broadening the application domains of MOFs-based materials.

Experimental and computational study on removal of nitric oxide using NH2-MIL-125: Revisiting removal mechanism

Jianfu Luan,Jiayou Liu,Xiaoxiang Huang,Zhongchao Tan,Hesheng Yu

The NH 2 -MIL-125 (NM-125) or modified NM-125 materials are used for photocatalytic removal of nitric oxide (NO). Most researchers attributed few NO 2 emission during NO photocatalysis to high selectivity towards the formation of nitrate ions due to the neglect of the principle of electroneutrality and pore structure of NM-125. This may cause misleading photocatalytic mechanism of NO removal. Herein, this work proposes a new mechanism behind NO removal using NM-125 based on experimental investigations and theoretical calculations. First, experimentally, the highest NO removal efficiency of 88.54 % with negligible NO 2 emission occurs at the anhydrous condition. In addition, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements verify the presence and accumulation of NO 2 as product during photocatalytic conversion of NO. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) computations demonstrate that there exist strong interactions between NO 2 and -NH 2 group within pores. Few NO 2 is detected during experiments is probably due to its subsequent adsorption in the pores of NM-125. The new NO removal mechanism including photocatalytic conversion NO into NO 2 and subsequent NO 2 adsorption in the pores of NM-125 is thus proposed. This work provides a deeper insight into photocatalytic NO removal over NM-125 and its variants.

Fc-COOH modified MIL-101(Cr) as enhanced photocatalyst to efficiently degrade tetracycline under visible light

Jiale Lu,Amin Jv,Hongyu Zhao,Guangbo Che,Bo Feng,Yufei Zhang,Chunbo Liu,Renquan Guan

MIL-101(Cr) is an ideal material for wastewater treatment due to its large specific surface area, excellent water stability, and chemical stability. However, its limited light absorption capacity hinders its application. We loaded ferrocene carboxylic acid (Fc-COOH) onto MIL-101(Cr) by a post-synthetic modification method, which resulted in the MOF possessing excellent optical properties while maintaining its original skeleton structure. The MIL-101(Cr)/Fc-COOH (1:2), (abbreviated as CFCC-2) exhibited the best performance, achieving a removal rate of 96% for tetracycline (TC) in just 30 min. This removal rate is significantly higher compared to MIL-101(Cr) and Fc-COOH, which achieved removal rates of only 15% and 21%, respectively. We propose a possible Z-type heterojunction mechanism between MIL-101(Cr) and Fc-COOH to explain the excellent photocatalytic performance of CFCC-2. The intermediates in TC were identified using LC-MS, and the toxicity of these intermediates was predicted and evaluated through the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.). This study provides new insights into the design and fabrication of MIL-101(Cr)-based catalysts as photodegrading organic pollutants.
