Metal–air batteries are important power sources for electronics and vehicles because of their remarkable high theoretical energy density and low cost. In this work, we firstly investigate the electrochemical properties of sodium air batteries (SABs) with the addition of ferrocene in the electrolyte. Combining charge–discharge measurements with field-emission transmission electron microscopy images of the discharged air cathodes, our results have demonstrated that two different pathways with ferrocene as an electrocatalyst and involved in the electrochemistry during the charge process might be governed by the morphological features of the electrode caused by the deposition of Na2O2 in SABs. The SAB with ferrocene as a catalyst exhibits a high cycling performance of up to 230 cycles with a high capacity of 1000 mA h g−1.

Development of an efficient air cathode for metal–air batteries composed of an element that is abundant on earth is a scientific and technical challenge. Here, nitrogen (N)-doped carbon cathodes were prepared using two conventional doping methods, namely ammonia activation (ammoxidation) and introduction of an N-containing precursor. Interestingly, the introduction of N-containing precursors to prepare the N-doped carbon material not only gave a different pore distribution with increased surface area but also maintained considerable N content, unlike the use of the ammoxidation method – thus greatly enhancing the catalytic activity (low overpotential) and improving the discharge capacity (6905 mA h g−1) and cycle life (from 8 to 66 cycles) in sodium–oxygen batteries compared with the pure carbon material. This study also stresses the importance of adopting the optimized synthesis method to prepare the N-doped carbon cathode.

Sodium-ion batteries are promising energy storage devices due to abundant sodium, inherent safety, and low cost, but irreversible sodium loss during initial cycles limits their reversible capacity and long-term stability. Cathode sodium-supplemented additives offer a simple and fabrication-compatible strategy. Herein, an organic sodium-supplemented additive, sodium squarate (Na2C4O4, NCO), is introduced into the high-capacity Prussian white (PW) cathodes to achieve efficient sodium compensation. During the first charge, NCO undergoes decomposition, releasing additional Na+ ions to compensate for irreversible sodium consumption associated with SEI formation and other interfacial side reactions. Meanwhile, the generated CO2 participates in interfacial reactions, leading to the formation of a carbonate-rich cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the PW cathode, while its diffusion toward the anode promotes the construction of a robust SEI enriched with carbonate species and sodium fluoride (NaF) on the hard-carbon anode. As a result, the PW-10% NCO||HC full cell delivers an enhanced discharge capacity of 100 mAh g–1, compared to 53 mAh g–1 for the pristine PW||HC full cell. Moreover, a multilayer pouch cell obtained a capacity retention of 80.1% after 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights NCO as an effective cathode sodium-supplemented additive and provides insights into the interfacial regulation for sodium-ion full cells.

(K,Na)NbO₃-based ceramics are widely regarded as a promising type of lead-free piezoelectric materials to replace the current lead-containing ones. However, due to polymorphic phase transitions, achieving a desirable comprehensive piezoelectric performance of high piezoelectric coefficient d ₃₃ and large electromechanical coupling factors k p , k t and k 33 along with good thermal stabilities (which are characterized by minimal temperature dependence and ageing degradation) in them is extremely challenging. The poled and subsequently thermally-stabilized <001>-textured 0.98(K₀.₄₈Na₀.₅₂)₀.₉₉Li₀.₀₁(Nb₀.₉₈Sb₀.₀₂)O₃–0.02(Bi₀.₅₀Na₀.₅₀)ZrO₃ ceramic was recently identified as an effective solution to the issue. It possesses a d ₃₃ of 405 pC/N along with k ₚ ≈ 0.80, k ₜ ≈ 0.60, k ₃₃ ≈ 0.88 at room temperature, and its piezoelectric properties are of weak temperature dependence across a broad operational range and show remarkable retention even after thermal ageing at 250 °C. Particularly, its d ₃₃ has an average of 425 pC/N with the variation ≤ ± 6.5% from room temperature to 100 °C, and its k ₜ keeps almost constant between -60 °C and 110 °C. In general, this ceramic exhibits an outstanding comprehensive performance that well competes to those of benchmark commercial piezoceramics such as PZT-5A and PZT-5H, indicating the great potential for advanced ultrasonic applications. Analysis reveals that the excellent piezoelectric properties originate from the synergistic effect of crystallographic anisotropy and an engineered, dense domain structure of orthorhombic phase. Meanwhile, the remarkable thermal ageing stability is possibly attributed to the relaxed crystal structure and the stabilized domain structure, both facilitated by the repeated orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transitions in the thermal treatment.

Although sodium (Na) metal is a promising anode material for high-energy Na batteries, it is still difficult for it to achieve a long lifespan due to dendrite growth and an unfavorable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with sluggish ion transport kinetics. Herein, a facile and mild hydrothermal method is developed to grow vertically aligned ZnO nanosheets on Ni foam, which effectively facilitates uniform thermal infusion and confinement of Na within the three-dimensional (3D) host. In virtue of the large surface area of NF, the local current density can be effectively lowered, which is conductive to uniform Na deposition. More importantly, the products obtained by the reaction between ZnO and Na metal during thermal infusion of Na affect the decomposition of electrolyte, leading to the formation of SEI film with enhanced Na-ion transport property. Electrochemical studies show that the resultant Na-metal/Zn-modified Ni foam composite (Na–Zn-NF) anode can stably cycle for more than 2000 and 550 h at a current density of 1 and 3 mA cm−2 in symmetric cells, respectively. When assembled into full cells against NaTi2(PO4)3/C (NTP/C) and Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7)/C (NFPP/C) cathodes, the Na–Zn-NF anode also exhibits excellent cycling stability and stable Coulombic efficiencies. This work provides an effective strategy for simultaneously achieving the enhancement of the surface sodiophilicity of 3D hosts and the optimization of an electrode/electrolyte interphase for stable Na metal anodes.

Sodium-ion batteries are renowned for their abundant reserves, cost-efficiency, safety, and eco-friendliness and are prime candidates for large-scale energy storage applications. The development of cathode materials plays a crucial role in shaping both the commercialization path and the ultimate performance capabilities of SIBs. To overcome the intricate synthesis challenges associated with pure-phase sodium-ion cathode materials, this study introduces an innovative and streamlined electrochemical Li+/Na+exchange process, successfully fabricating a high-capacity Ni-rich cathode material. This cathode material boasts a remarkable reversible capacity of 180 mAh g−1at 0.1 C and retains a high-rate capacity of 115 mAh g−1even at 5 C. Additionally, it exhibits exceptional cycling stability, retaining about 85% of its capacity at 1 C after 50 cycles and still maintaining a capacity greater than 60% after 100 cycles. The Na-NMA85 full cell preserves a discharge capacity of 110 mAh g−1after 100 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 80%. This research underscores innovative strategies for designing ion-intercalation-based cathode materials that enhance battery performance, providing fresh perspectives for advancing high-performance battery technologies.

Constructing robust 2D−based energy storage nanomaterials by well−defined pore architectures and rational surface modification are critical yet daunting challenges for rechargeable alkali−ion batteries. Herein, a new−type 2D interwoven multi pores decorated Co 3 O 4 @N−doped carbon nanosheet with rich surface defects is proposed as lithium/sodium ion anodes for the first time. The combining experimental researches, microscopic structure characterization and dynamics analysis demonstrate that the multi porous structure provides large numbers of channels to accelerate Li + /Na + transport, rational surface design creates abundant active sites for fast ions reactions, while robust carbon shell offers excellent ionic/electrical conductivity and structural integrity. The obtained bifunctional composites deliver superior rate performance and long−term cycle stability (~529 mA h g −1 after 2000 cycles in LIBs and ~166 mA h g −1 after 1700 cycles in SIBs) due to the synergistic contribution of the unique structure and surface defects . Furthermore, it still remains a high reversible capacity (>610 mA h g −1 after 1000 cycles) in full cell. Kinetic analysis reveals the designed anode exhibits prominent pseudocapacitive behavior, enabling ultra−fast lithium/sodium storage and ultrahigh−rate capability. This work offers valuable insights for developing high performance energy storage devices.

We report for the first time a Na-ion battery anode material composed of P-doped CoSe 2 nanoparticles (P-CoSe 2 ) with the size of 5–20 nm that are uniformly embed in a 3D porous honeycomb-like carbon network. High rate capability and cycling stability are achieved simultaneously. The honeycomb-like carbon network is rationally designed to support high electrical conductivity, rapid Na-ion diffusion as well as the accommodation of the volume expansion from the active P-CoSe 2 nanoparticles. In particular, heteroatom P-doping within CoSe 2 introduces stronger P-Co bonds and additional P-Se bonds that significantly improve the structure stability of P-CoSe 2 for highly stable sodiation/desodiation over long-term cycling. P-doping also improves the electrical conductivity of the CoSe 2 nanoparticles, leading to highly elevated electrochemical kinetics to deliver high specific capacities at high current densities. Benefiting from the unique nanostructure and atomic-level P-doping, the P-CoSe 2 (2:1)/C anode delivers an excellent cycle stability with a specific capacity of 206.9 mA h g −1 achieved at 2000 mA g −1 after 1000 cycles. In addition, this material can be synthesized using a facile pyrolysis and selenization/phosphorization approach. This study provides new opportunities of heteroatom doping as an effective method to improve the cycling stability of Na-ion anode materials.

P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27−xMn0.62YxO2 (x = 0, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%) cathode materials were successfully prepared using a traditional solid-state method with ball milling-assisted modification. The effect of Y-doping on the crystal structure, grain size, morphology and sodium storage performance of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that the ball-milling pre-treatment method could effectively reduce the grain size and mitigate the aggregation of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2. Additionally, reasonable Y-doping (x = 1%) significantly enhances the rate capability and cycling stability of Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2via improving the Na+ diffusion kinetics and the reversibility of the oxygen redox reaction. These results indicate that Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.26Mn0.62Y0.01O2 is a promising candidate material for high-rate and long-life cathodes for Na-ion battery application.

We succeed in obtaining Mo 2 C embedded in S-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/SC) nanofibers by electrospinning and sulfuration. The use of S-doped carbon not only provides more additional Na + storage active sites to enhance its sodium storage performance, but also increases electrons migration and ions diffusion. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the electrode exhibits excellent rate capacities of 242 and 96 mA h g −1 from 0.1 A g −1 to 5 A g −1 . Excitingly, the high-rate performance is superior, achieving 102.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 over 1000th cycle. This project provides ideas for the development the high-rate and long-term stable of the Mo 2 C in energy storage devices.

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), as a primary pollutant in the air, has attracted much attention due to the adverse effects on the atmospheric environment and human health. The wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) has been proved to be the most effective method to control the emission of SO 2 . However, the traditional absorbents in WFGD posed the problems of limited recycling utilization and susceptible to oxidation. In this study, we proposed the Na-Mg-Ci 3- compound system to repeatedly absorb SO 2 for rounds. The results demonstrated that the compound system can integrate the absorption capacity of Na 3 Ci absorbent and the regeneration efficiency of Mg 3 Ci 2 absorbent. We compared the performances of the compound systems with different alkaline earth metals (Li, Na, K), and the sodium was most suitable for the circulating desulfurization with the consideration of performance and economy. After that, we investigated the influence of ingredient proportions on the absorbent performance, and the results showed that the 0.4 mol/L Na 3 Ci and 0.2 mol/L Mg 3 Ci 2 were the best combination for the compound system in these experiments. In this condition, the compound system had the excellent effective sulfur capacity and regeneration speed in the recycling process. Moreover, the anti-oxidation effect of sodium ascorbate was explored, and the reusability performance of compound system can be improved with antioxidants. This study contributes to providing a novel method for the removal and recycling of SO 2 in the wet flue gas desulphurization.

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) based on semiconductors offers a sustainable and promising way for environmental remediation. However, the photocatalytic performance currently suffers from weak light-harvesting ability, rapid charge combination and a lack of accessible reactive sites. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal candidates to overcome these problems and become hotpots in the research fields. Herein, we demonstrate an ultrathin (<4 nm thick) Na-doped BiOCl nanosheets with {001} facets (Na-BOC-001) fabricated via a facile bottom-up approach. Because of the synergistic effect of highly exposed active facets and optimal Na doping on the electronic and crystal structure, the Na-BOC-001 showed an upshifted conduction band (CB) with stronger reduction potential for O2 activation, more defective surface for enhanced O2 adsorption, as well as the highest visible-light driven charge separation and transfer ability. Compared with the bulk counterparts (BOC-010 and BOC-001), the largest amount of active species and the best photocatalytic performance for the tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation were achieved for the Na-BOC-001 under visible-light irradiation, even though it had slightly weaker visible-light absorption ability. Moreover, the effect of the Na doping and crystal facet on the possible pathways for TC degradation was investigated. This work offers a feasible and economic strategy for the construction of highly efficient ultrathin 2D materials.
