Multivariate transition metal sulfides and porous nanosheet architectures hold promising potential for applications for the energy-related application. Nevertheless, the addition of polymer binders and conductive agents can adversely affect their electrochemical performance. In this work, we present self-assembled Ni-Co sulfide nanosheet arrays growing on foamed Ni (Ni-Co-S@NF). Ni-Co-S@NF electrode materials are synthesized through the complete sulfidation of interconnected ultrathin nanosheets derived from NiCo layered double hydroxides. The highly conductive nickel foam facilitates electron transfer while the 3D network structure promotes electrolyte diffusion and penetration. Hence, porous Ni-Co-S@NF materials presents the excellent specific capacitance as 1286.6C g −1 in 1 A g −1 and retained 70 % of its original capacity over 5000 charge–discharge cycles. Furthermore, we assemble an asymmetric supercapacitor used active carbon as negative-electrode material and Ni-Co-S@NF as positive-electrode material. This device delivers the specific energy is 74.0 Wh kg −1 and specific power of 850.0 W kg −1 .

The design of bifunctional catalysts with spatially separated active sites holds significance importance in achieving simultaneous electrooxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a core-shell Re-Ni@Ni(OH) 2 /CC heterostructure is demonstrated for the electrocatalytic furfural oxidation reaction (FOR) coupled with HER. Experimental results and theoretical analyses reveal that Re not only modulates the heterointerface between Re-Ni core and Ni(OH) 2 shell, facilitating furfural (FF) adsorption at Ni(OH) 2 sites, but also regulates electronic structure of Ni. This leads to a negative shift in the d-band center from Fermi level, effectively weakening hydrogen adsorption at Ni sites in Re-Ni@Ni(OH) 2 heterostructure, thereby improving the HER process. As a result, the synthesized Re-Ni@Ni(OH) 2 /CC exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.40 V @10 mA cm −2 for the FOR||HER. This study highlights the importance of modulating metal’s electronic structure and identifying active sites, which has great potential for improving bifunctional electrocatalytic reactions.

Placing of affinity tags at desired position of the proteins has been widely used to facilitate protein separation. One of the most commonly method for protein separation is nickel ion (Ni2+) affinity chromatography. Complex steps and time consuming in nickel ion affinity
chromatography have caused high demand for alternative purification methods that allow direct and rapid separation of His-tagged proteins. In the present study, magnetic core–shell beads enriched with Ni2+-nitrilotriacetate (Ni-NTA) on their surface were prepared in this study
by precipitation polymerization, with a uniform size of about 10 μm. The presented Ni2+ amount was 2.23%, which endowed the spheres with excellent magnetic responsivity and dispersity. We compared the magnetic beads enrichment method and nickel ion affinity chromatography
method for extraction of His-tagged protein sample with different concentrations. The results revealed that, when compared with nickel ion affinity chromatography, extraction efficiency, purity of the extracted protein, and regeneration effort were much higher with the magnetic beads enrichment
method. By using magnetic beads enrichment method, samples could be separated within 20 s, and purified within 1 h, with unlimited flow velocity and sample capacity. In addition, the magnetic beads enrichment method was particularly promising for the separation of His-tagged proteins in less
samples.

Ethanol steam reforming (ESR) has drawn great attention for sustainable H 2 production. Design active and sinter resistant nanocatalysts are critical issues for ESR reaction. Herein, a core–shell structured Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite for ESR reaction has been synthesized via a one-pot facile encapsulation strategy, which is featured by highly active and sintering resistance for ESR reaction. Structural and morphological characterizations revealed that each Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite contained a 3 nm Pt-Cu core and multiple Ni nanoparticles with diameters of around 3 nm anchored on the SiO 2 shell. The Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibited higher ethanol conversion (99.99%) and H 2 selectivity (70.32%) and an excellent stability with no loss of activity after 50 h of reaction at 450 °C. The advantages were originated from the ultra-small size of metal nanoparticles and the unique core–shell structure provides a great opportunity to give full play to the catalytic activity of active sites thus guaranteed excellent catalytic activity. Compared with the supported Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 catalyst, the Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibit good stability and sintering resistance due to the encapsulation of the metal nanoparticles and the enhanced metal-support interaction. Thus, it is supposed that this type of catalyst opens a new strategy for the design of the ESR catalyst.

A SiO2-supported Fe and Ni bimetallic catalyst has been synthesized, characterized and, for the first time, tested as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation and mineralization of methylene blue (MB) dye. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of this catalyst were analyzed using FESEM, XRD, FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic degradation of MB has been investigated using Fe–Ni/SiO2 catalysts under visible and solar light irradiation in aqueous solutions. The effects of solution pH, H2O2 concentration, initial MB concentration, catalyst dosage and light intensity on the degradation of MB have been systematically investigated. An almost complete degradation was achieved within 60 min with a solution pH of 3.00, a H2O2 concentration of 3.0 mM L−1 and a catalyst dose of 0.85 g L−1. The degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies were 99.80% and 86.19%, respectively, for sunlight. However, the values were only 99.01% and 75.71% for visible light. These results suggested that Fe–Ni/SiO2 possesses significant catalytic activity, and the solar-Fenton process is a feasible method for degrading and mineralizing the MB dye compared with artificial visible light. The catalytic action is attributed to H2O2 and the formation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) by Fe(III) in Fe–Ni/SiO2via the photo-Fenton reactions. Furthermore, we determined that the catalyst activity can be replicated in successive experiments without a significant decline in the Fe–Ni/SiO2 and H2O2 processing efficiency under light irradiation. Our results will be useful for future improvement of active heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for developing organic dye-containing wastewater treatments.

Ammonia is considered to be a green energy due to its carbon-free footprint, high energy density, cheap transport costs and so on. However, the problem of NO x (mainly NO/NO 2 ) emissions especially at high temperature (>800 °C) inhibits the energy utilization progress of NH 3 (Such as NH 3 combustion). So, catalytic combustion of NH 3 is supposed to be a promising method to solve this problem but there is a rare report on that. The NO x emissions or N 2 selectivity performances in the NH 3 oxidation process with different catalyst was conducted with Density functional theory (DFT) and experimental studies. Results showed that, when Fe 2 O 3 was used as catalyst, the conversion efficiency of NH 3 was 96.2%, and the selectivity of N 2 was 97.7%, which was higher than oxidation of NH 3 without catalyst. DFT simulation showed that NH 3 and O 2 can be separately adsorbed on Fe (top) of Fe 2 O 3 (001), the adsorption of NH 3 and O 2 were enhanced when they were put on Fe (top) of Fe 2 O 3 (001) at the same time. Meanwhile, the length of inter-atomic bond increased thus creating oxygen vacancy , which promoted the oxidation of NH 3 . Finally, a Ni modified Fe-based catalyst (NiO10%/Fe 2 O 3 30%/Al 2 O 3 60%), full of oxygen vacancy (confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)), was fabricated with impregnation method. The adsorption of NH 3 and O 2 were further enhanced (confirmed by DFT simulation), the NH 3 conversion efficiency and the N 2 selectivity were stably improved to 96.8% and 100%.

ISOBAM-104-stabilized Ni2+ colloidal catalysts were synthesized through a facile method and used for hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of potassium borohydride (KBH4). Ni nanoparticles (NPs) were formed as the active phase during the catalytic process. Ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV–vis) and transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize the structure and particle size of the as-formed Ni NPs. The results suggested that the catalytic activity of Ni2+ colloidal catalyst increased with the decreased size of as-formed Ni NPs, which is consistent with the results of density functional theory calculation. The highest catalytic activity of the catalyst can be 12400 ml-H2 min−1 g-Ni−1, which was even higher than that of noble Pt or Pd colloidal catalysts prepared using identical methods and catalytic conditions. According to the Arrhenius method, the ISOBAM-104-stabilized Ni2+ colloidal catalysts showed low activation energies of about 41.3 kJ mol−1 for the hydrogen generation from hydrolysis basic KBH4 solution.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Pt-based electrocatalysts in alkaline solution is typically limited by the rate of water dissociation. Herein, we report a facile one-step strategy in the synthesis of Pt/Ni(OH) 2 heterojunction for enhanced HER activity. Ultrathin Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets decorated with uniformly dispersed Pt nanoparticles at average sizes of 2.2 nm are in-situ grown on nickel foam (NF) with binder-free feature under mild conditions due to induction by ethylene glycol diethyl ether, even without adding extra Ni 2+ sources. The synthesized Pt/Ni(OH) 2 /NF shows superior HER activity in 1.0 M KOH solution, achieving low overpotentials of 42, 91, and 114 mV at current densities of 10, 100, and 200 mA cm −2 and outstanding durability for 25 h at 25 mA cm −2 without noticeable Pt agglomeration. This work offers a mechanistic insight into one-step fabrication of Pt/Ni(OH) 2 -based catalyst with high activity and stability for HER.

The remarkable stability and detrimental environmental impacts of nickel(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Ni(II)-EDTA) complexes originated from electroplating effluents have sparked a growing curiosity about their efficient remediation. In this study, L -cysteine functionalized zero-valent iron (C-ZVI bm ) was synthesized via a ball-milling method and employed as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst to decomplex Ni(II)-EDTA and immobilize Ni(II) from wastewater. The results demonstrated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic rate constant (2.096 L·mol −1 ·min −1 ) for EDTA degradation in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system was 123.3 times that in the ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system (0.017 L·mol −1 ·min −1 ). The incorporation of L -cysteine onto the surface of ZVI significantly enhanced the H 2 O 2 activation, reactive oxygen species ( OH, O 2 − , and 1 O 2 ) generation, and the sequential Ni(II)-EDTA decomplexation and EDTA degradation. The results of capture experiments revealed that 1 O 2 played a crucial role in the degradation of EDTA in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system. The optimization of the experimental variables indicated that the degradation of EDTA and the reduction/adsorption of Ni(II) were antagonistic in the C-ZVI bm /H 2 O 2 system, resulting in an efficient reduction/immobilization of Ni(II) and an inhibition of EDTA degradation at a higher dosage of C-ZVI bm . Our findings provide new insights into the promising heterogeneous Fenton-like process that enables the decomplexation of Ni(II)-EDTA, the degradation of EDTA, and the synchronous immobilization of Ni(II).

Nickel-based catalysts display promising potential in integrated hydrogen production through methanol electrooxidation (MOR). The unavoidable self-oxidation from Ni(OH) 2 to NiOOH severely restricts their MOR performance. To inspire the progress of MOR before self-oxidation of Ni species by altering reaction pathways, a heterostructured Ni–WO 2 catalyst is constructed to follow the direct electrooxidation pathway of methanol. In-situ/ex-situ characterization techniques combined with density functional theory calculations reveal the constructed Ni–WO 2 heterostructure alters the electronic structure of Ni site. It’s found Ni–Ni bond in Ni–WO 2 becomes longer and the electrons transfer from Ni sites to W sites. This results in upshifted d band center of Ni site and its closing to the Fermi energy level, which optimizes the CH 3 OH adsorption and the deprotonation of *CH 3 O into *CH 2 O in potential-determining step. Moreover, the formed asymmetric adsorption sites increase the polarity of the methanol and the intermediate. As expected, CH 3 OH molecule is highly converted into HCOOH via direct electrooxidation pathway. This obtained Ni–WO 2 exhibits superior MOR activity with high peak current density of 325.26 mA cm −2 and performs long term of 90 h at 10 mA cm −2 in hydrogen production. This work provides an important guidance for designing efficient Ni-based samples for direct electrooxidation of methanol. Graphical abstract

Ni-based catalysts supported on composite metal oxides (NiO-Al 2 O 3 , MgO-Al 2 O 3 , Co 3 O 4 -Al 2 O 3 ) were synthesized via coprecipitation followed by Ni impregnation to investigate the influence of support composition on catalyst stability in methane steam reforming. Accelerated deactivation protocols (methane decomposition, high-temperature sintering, hydrothermal oxidation) revealed hydrothermal oxidation as the primary cause of irreversible deactivation. The 10Ni/NiAl catalyst (10 wt% Ni/10 wt% NiO-Al 2 O 3 ) showed remarkable regenerability after 923 K hydrothermal treatment, fully restoring its activity. This was attributed to coexisting reduced Ni species and readily reducible NiO, facilitating rapid reactivation. Other catalysts formed thermally stable NiAl 2 O 4 , leading to permanent deactivation. Methane cracking at 973 K had negligible effect, and 10Ni/NiAl catalyst exhibited the lowest carbon deposition (17.02 %). Under extreme hydrogen purged at 1223 K, only the 10Ni/CoAl catalyst exhibited a minor activity decline. The superior stability of 10Ni/NiAl was attributed to an in situ-formed NiAl composite metal oxides during 973 K calcination, which effectively anchored Ni particles, suppressed sintering, and prevented extensive oxidation.

The Fenton reaction in advanced oxidation processes is an ideal pathway for the generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (•OH). However, its application in organic wastewater treatment is limited due to the requirement for acidic pH conditions and the additional introduction of H2O2 and Fe2+. In this study, FeOOH–CN/Ni(OH)2 composites were constructed as photocatalysis-self-Fenton catalysts by the amorphous FeOOH, which was uniformly anchored onto the surface of pure g-C3N4 (carbon nitride (CN)), and Ni(OH)2 was assembled on top. In this process, FeOOH–CN/Ni(OH)2 achieved self-sufficiency in H2O2 production while enabling efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) over a wide pH range, with a degradation ratio of up to 98.82%, and a first-order reaction rate constant (k) was determined to be 0.04925 min–1, representing a 10.15 times enhancement compared to the pristine CN. A reasonable S-scheme heterojunction charge migration mechanism was demonstrated based on valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) equipped with a Kelvin probe force microscope, and density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations. Furthermore, degradation experiments demonstrated that the catalyst possesses remarkable degradation efficiency for other contaminants as well. On one hand, this significant improvement can be attributed to the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction between Ni(OH)2 and CN, which not only increased the specific surface area of the composite but also remarkably enhanced the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charges. On the other hand, the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe effectively facilitated the activation of H2O2 and promoted the cycling of Fe3+/Fe2+. This study provided an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysis-self-Fenton system, offering novel perspectives for enhancing Fenton-based processes and advancing the application of Fenton reactions in the treatment of organic wastewater.
