To inhibit bacterial infection in situ and improve osseointegration are essentially important for long-term survival of an orthopedic implant , in particular for infection-associating revision surgery. Herein, we fabricate a functional molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 )/polydopamine (PDA)-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) coating on titanium (Ti) implant to address above concerns simultaneously. The coating not only improved the osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), but also endowed Ti substrates with effective antibacterial ability when exposing to near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. It accelerated glutathione (GSH) oxidation via photothermal energy and induced intrinsic ROS-independent oxidative stress damage deriving from MoS 2 nanosheets . The results displayed that RGD-decorated MoS 2 nanosheets significantly increased the cellular osteogenic behaviors of MSCs via up-regulating osteogenesis-related genes (ALP, Runx2, Col I and OCN) in vitro. Moreover, the functionalized Ti substrates demonstrated great antibacterial efficiency of over 92.6% inhibition for S. aureus and E. coli under NIR-irradiation. Hyperthermia induced by photothermal effect accelerated the GSH consumption and ROS-independent oxidative stress destroyed the integrity of bacteria membranes , which synergistically led to protein leakage and ATP decrease. Furthermore, co-culture experiment showed that S. aureus contamination was efficiently cleaned from MoS 2 /PDA-RGD surface after NIR photothermal treatment, while MSCs adhered and proliferated on the MoS 2 /PDA-RGD surface. In an S. aureus infection model in vivo, MoS 2 /PDA-RGD modified Ti rods killed bacteria with an efficiency of 94.6% under NIR irradiation, without causing damage to normal tissue. More importantly, the MoS 2 /PDA-RGD modified Ti implants accelerated new bone formation in comparison with TNT implants in vivo .

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassays exhibiting high sensitivity and decent operability have considerable potential in areas such as cancer diagnostics. In particular, cathodic PEC configurations can prevent interference from reductive substances, which can occur in biological samples; however, challenges remain in terms of sensitivity and operability. In this study, separate-type PEC immunoassays were developed for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by combining microplate-based immune recognition and off–on cathodic PEC detection. Polydopamine (PDA)-coated Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles (PB@PDA NPs) were used as signal tags to label the detection antibody. The PB NPs and PDA captured on the microplates both disassembled under strongly alkaline conditions to generate redox-active electron acceptors . The disassembled products were quantitatively transferred to PEC detection cells and synergistically enhanced the PEC current with microstructured BiOI , which operated as a cathodic semiconductor electrode. As proof of principle, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was applied to elucidate the potential application of PEC immunoassay in clinical diagnosis, and the obtained linear range of the sensor was 0.001–100 ng mL −1 with the detection limit of 54.9 fg mL −1 (S/N = 3). The proposed separate-type off–on PEC strategy showed high sensitivity and decent operability for CEA detection, indicating its potential for the identification of other tumor markers.

Digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D printing is suitable to fabricate bone scaffolds with small size and high precision. However, the published literature mainly deals with the fabrication procedure and parameters of DLP printed bioceramic scaffold, but lacks the subsequent systematic biological evaluations for bone regeneration application. In this work, a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) macroporous scaffold was constructed by DLP-based 3D printing technique. Furthermore, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) was facilely incorporated into this scaffold through a facile polydopamine (PDA) modification process. The resultant scaffold presents an interconnected porous structure with pore size of ∼570 μm, compressive strength (∼3.6 MPa), and the self-assembly Ca-P/PDA nanocoating exhibited excellent sustained-release property for BMP-2. Notably, this BMP-2/PDA-BCP scaffold presents favorable effects on the adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Furthermore, in vivo experiments conducted on rats demonstrated that the scaffolds could induce cell layer aggregation adjacent to the scaffolds and continuous new bone generation within the scaffold. Collectively, this work demonstrated that the BMP-2/PDA-BCP scaffold is of immense potential to treat small craniofacial bone defects in demand of high accuracy.

Although many researchers have done several studies on improving the selective separation performance of membrane materials, the conceptions and applications of membrane-based molecular imprinting separation and recognition with both high permselectivity and rebinding capacity have still faced challenges. Herein, for the first time, the bioinspired polydopamine (PDA)-modified porous regenerated cellulose membrane (pRCMs) with Au-based imprinting structure was constructed for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted nanocomposite membranes (MINMs); propranolol was used as template molecule. Importantly, based on the as-constructed PDA-modified layers, abundant Au-modified particles have been uniformly distributed onto the surfaces of membranes, and Au/PDA-based structures can be used as the imprinted-initiated factors for the preparation of sandwich-like-imprinted sites by developing a two-step temperature propranolol-imprinting method. Moreover, superior rebinding capacity (76.87 mg g−1) and selectivity (4.27–4.56) of MINMs has been successfully achieved; the as-prepared MINMs also showed excellent regeneration and permselectivity of propranolol (16.01–18.34) by constructing large amounts of propranolol-imprinted sites on the Au/PDA-based surface. Therefore, under optimized conditions, MINMs would finally obtain reproducible, accessible, and stable membrane-based separation system of the propranolol molecule.

A novel and versatile active–passive integrated strategy to integrate both antifouling and antibacterial properties into PVDF membranes was developed. PDA microspheres on modified membranes served as primers, and we proposed that a “PDA guiding effect” existed during the modification process. Specifically speaking, it was a guiding reduction effect from the PDA microspheres toward Ag+ and a guiding generation effect toward L-cysteine that were separately in favor of the generation of AgNPs and cysteine flowers in cross-sections of the membranes. In addition, the active–passive integrated strategy presented in this research simultaneously includes both an anti-adhesion approach for reducing the initial adsorption of organisms and an anti-bacterial approach for suppressing the activities of attached organisms on the membranes. Conventional filtration experiments clearly demonstrated that the zwitterionic characteristics of L-cysteine made it possible to greatly reduce the initial adhesion of foulants and the deposition of dead bacteria on the membranes. Various bacteria-based experiments proved that AgNPs were effective at preventing the growth, proliferation, and colonization of microorganisms, as well as the accompanying membrane biofouling after long-term operation. Furthermore, self-driven filtration experiments, natural organic matter (NOM) solution filtration experiments, and protein adsorption tests were also carried out to evaluate the practical applications of the modified membranes. In this research, the PDA guiding effect was directed toward inorganic AgNPs and organic L-cysteine. This effect has great possibilities to be extended to other functional materials and to be broadly applied in the construction of diverse functionalized surfaces.

Nowadays, attempts emerge in an endless stream to explore an efficient active interlayer to break the “trade-off” relationship between permeability and rejection of conventional thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. Biochar, which is often used as an economically efficient material in soil remediation and wastewater treatment, however, is usually neglected in the application of TFC membrane. This study fabricated a series of polydopamine (PDA)/TFC membranes incorporated with different concentrations of ball-milled biochar (BMBC) interlayer by the combination of conventional interfacial polymerization and bar coating method and employed them in antibiotics wastewater removal. Results indicated that water permeability of the optimized membrane (PDA/TFC-2) improved nearly two-fold (32 ± 1.8 LMHB (L.m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) versus 18.6 ± 1.6 LMHB for control membrane), and the rejection rates were also the highest (91.9% for chlortetracycline, 90.3% for tetracycline, 81.8% for Ciprofloxacin and 91.3% for oxytetracycline). Furthermore, the fouled PDA/TFC-2 membrane could be easily regenerated by NaOH washing and remained ~70.6% permeability flux of that of fresh membrane even after five times washing, while the rejection rate was still more than 60%. The findings of our study not only provide a promising material for the separation of antibiotic wastewater but also give a new sight towards the application of biochar in wastewater treatment.

A PDA/AuNPs/PDANPs sandwich structure modified optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor for specific detecting of rabbit IgG were proposed in this paper. On the proposed sensor, polydopamine (PDA), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDANPs) were sequentially deposited to form a multilayer hybrid structure. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the sensor has been significantly enhanced through the strong coupling effects of SPR and localized surface plasmon resonance. The sensor achieves an RI sensitivity of3009.58 nm/RIU, representing a 3-fold increase compared to the original SPR sensor. In addition, due to the high surface activity and large specific surface area of PDANPs, the biosensitivity of the sensor has been enhanced. The sensor demonstrated specific detection of Rabbit IgG with a biosensitivity of 0.9157 nm/(μg/mL) and limit of detection (LOD) of 22 ng/mL. These findings indicate that the prepared sensor can specifically detect Rabbit IgG with high precision and a low LOD. Therefore, this PDA/AuNPs/PDANPs sandwich structure modified biosensor has great potential in clinical detection and other bio-detection fields.

The strategic alignment of nanoplatelets within polymer matrices is pivotal for the development of nanocomposites with superior gas barrier characteristics. In this work, the effect of lamellar particles orientation in polymer for gas permeation was demonstrated. The magnetic α-Al 2 O 3 (Al 2 O 3 @PDA-Fe 3 O 4 ) was first prepared by in situ growth of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles immobilized on polydopamine (PDA)-modified Al 2 O 3 surface. Subsequently the orientation of magnetic α-Al 2 O 3 in brominated butyl rubber (BIIR) was achieved by modulating the applied magnetic field direction. Results show that the PDA, as the role of surface adhesive, not only anchored Al 2 O 3 substrate but also bound ferric ions for the further in situ formation of Fe 3 O 4 , which ensured the physico-chemical stability of the magnetic α-Al 2 O 3 . Comparison of hydrogen permeation performance of composites with in-plan, middle-of plane and out-of plane alignment demonstrated the effect of lamellar particles orientation. The Al 2 O 3 @PDA-Fe 3 O 4 /BIIR composite with in-plane alignment had the best hydrogen barrier property by a 50% reduction in hydrogen permeability coefficient compared to the neat BIIR, underscoring the critical role of particle orientation in enhancing the gas barrier properties of nanocomposites. Highlights The structural stability of magnetic Al 2 O 3 nanocomposites was enhanced by polydopamine (PDA). The composites with in-plane alignment, middle-of plane alignment and out-of plane alignment were prepared by a magnetic field. The effect of lamellar particles orientation on gas permeation of polymer nanocomposites was studied. The composites with in-plane alignment possesses the best gas barrier property.

Tumor hypoxia, limited H 2 O 2 levels, and abundant glutathione (GSH) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) pose challenges for high-efficiency reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated therapies. To address these limitations, an intelligent ROS-mediated nanoplatform, Ce6@ZIF-8/PDA/CuO 2 /HA (CZPCH), with photodynamic activity, self-supplied H 2 O 2 , Fenton-like reaction, GSH-depletion and photothermal activity was designed for efficient tumor treatment. In the acidic TME, CuO 2 in CZPCH deposits into Cu 2+ and H 2 O 2 , consuming GSH and triggering Fenton-like reactions to generate hydroxyl radical (•OH), enabling efficient chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Moreover, the presence of Ce6 and PDA enables CZPCH to exhibit excellent singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and temperature increase performance 660 nm and 808 nm laser irradiation, respectively, resulting in efficient photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) efficacy. Interestingly, the temperature increase from PTT significantly enhances •OH and 1 O 2 generation, achieving high-efficiency ROS-based therapeutic efficacy. This synergistic CDT/PDT/PTT treatment demonstrates excellent anti-tumor efficacy and illuminates novel ROS-based therapeutic strategy design.

The modified graphene oxide (GO) exhibits a good prospect in the field of lubricating oil additives. However, traditional modification method inevitably have some application limitations. Herein, long-alkyl chains from tetradecylamine (TDA), hexadecylamine (HDA), and octadecylamine (ODA) are grafted onto GO surface through the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine, thus obtaining three different additives (TDA-GO@PDA, HDA-GO@PDA, and ODA-GO@PDA). Among them, HDA-GO@PDA has the best dispersion stability in 500 N base oil for over 60 days. In addition, HDA-GO@PDA also have the prime tribological performance with reduction of the average friction coefficient and the average wear scar diameter by 44.4 % and 30.3 %, compared with pristine 500 N base oil. Overall, HDA-GO@PDA exhibit promising potential to solve industrial problems as lubricating additive.

Leaks during oil extraction, wastewater containing organic solvents from industrial production and oily wastewater from daily life pose a great threat to the ecosystem and human life, which makes the research and development of oil–water separation materials imminent. Nanocellulose aerogels possess lightweight properties, high porosities, and excellent adsorption capabilities, making them efficient adsorbents for the removal of oil spills and organic pollutants. A novel method is presented utilizing the self-polymerization characteristics of polydopamine (PDA) to encapsulate titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles, thereby forming core–shell nanoparticles. The unique adhesive properties of PDA play a critical role in the binding of these nanoparticles to a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) scaffold, resulting in a robust composite material. To further enhance the performance of the aerogel, octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) was incorporated, imparting hydrophobicity to the overall structure, resulting in the OTMS/TiO 2 @PDA/CNF aerogel. This aerogel exhibited outstanding adsorption capabilities and absorbed various light and heavy oils, as well as organic solvents, with an adsorption capacity of up to 59.9 g/g. Under gravity, the separation efficiency of the aerogel reached 96.15 %. An innovative oil collection device was designed for the sustainable separation of pollutants from water to ensure efficient cleanup operations. Furthermore, the aerogel exhibited excellent antibacterial properties with a bactericidal rate of up to 99.14 % and significantly enhanced environmental adaptability. This simple, economical, and environment-friendly method is expected to promote the development of efficient oil/water separation adsorbents and contribute to the control of environmental pollution.

Anode modification is an effective strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC). However, the impacts of the modified materials on anode biofilm development during MFC operation have been less studied. We prepared a novel PDA-Fe 3 O 4 -CF composite anode by coating original carbon felt anode (CF) with polydopamine (PDA) and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The composite anode material was characterized by excellent hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity, and the anodic biofilm exhibited fast start-up, higher biomass, and more uniform biofilm layer after MFC operation. The MFC reactor assembled with the composite anode achieved a maximum power density of 608 mW m −2 and an output voltage of 586 mV, which were 316.4% and 72.4% higher than the MFC with the original CF anode, respectively. Microbial community analysis indicated that the modified anode biofilm had a higher relative abundance of exoelectrogen species in comparison to the unmodified anode. The PICRUSt data revealed that the anodic materials may affect the bioelectrochemical performance of the biofilm by influencing the expression levels of key enzyme genes involved in biofilm extracellular polymer (EPS) secretion and extracellular electron transfer (EET). The growth of the anodic biofilm would exert positive or negative influences on the efficiency of electricity production and electron transfer of the MFCs at different operating stages. This work expands the knowledge of the role that anodic materials play in the development and electrochemical performance of anodic biofilm in MFCs.
