Using waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the feedstock, diisooctyl terephthalate (DOTP) was directly synthesized via alcoholysis with isooctanol (2-EH) over an environmentally friendly choline chloride-zinc acetate (the ChCl-Zn(Ac)2 catalyst)-deep eutectic solvent (DES). This approach overcame the limitations of traditional methods by offering simplicity, low cost, tunable composition, excellent environmental compatibility, and superior chemical stability. The study systematically investigated the effects of reaction temperature, catalyst dosage, molar ratio of 2-EH to PET, and reaction time on the synthesis process. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the process conditions, with the optimal parameters determined as follows: reaction temperature of 180 °C, catalyst dosage of 5.19%, molar ratio of 2-EH to PET of 4.89 mol mol-1, and reaction time of 87.30 min. Under these optimal conditions, PET was completely degraded, and the DOTP yield reached as high as 87.59%. The ChCl-Zn(Ac)2 catalyst exhibited stable performance, significantly enhanced both the PET degradation rate and the DOTP yield. This study provides a feasible technical solution for the efficient resource utilization of waste PET, offers a reference for developing green catalytic synthesis processes of DOTP, and expands the application potential of DES catalysts in polyester degradation.

Herein, we designed the tyrosinase specific sensing probe NITYO with recognition unit, 3-hydroxy benzyloxy, that also regarded as an electron-rich group that quenches the naphthalimide core by PET effect. When tyrosinase exists and catalyzes the secondary oxidation of NITYO , the fluorescence emission goes red shift with “turn-on” signal. We hypothesized and confirmed these results through comprehensive analysis such as molecular orbital analysis, molecular docking and HRMS. To sum up, we achieve the tyrosinase detection by NITYO with highly sensitivity and selectivity. It can be used in food samples and in vivo bioimaging. Besides, NITYO performs superb linear fitting and lower detection limit (0.33 U/mL) within the range of 10–400 U/mL.

Upcycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic into high-value chemicals like p-xylene is challenging, due to the difficulty for achieving selective depolymerization of PET and deoxygenation of reaction intermediates. Herein, a tandem alcoholysis-hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis strategy for converting PET to p-xylene over Cu-based catalysts using n-butanol as both solvent and reactant at 205 °C was conducted using Mg-modulated Cu-based catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides. By precisely tuning the Mg/Al molar ratio, the multidimensional synergistic roles of Mg in enhancing the catalyst performance were unraveled, which serves as the core of heterogeneous PET depolymerization. Specifically, Mg reinforces metal–support interactions, confining Cu nanoparticles to an average size of 4.8 nm, which is far smaller than the 14.1 nm observed in Mg-free Cu1.0Al2.0, maximizing accessible active sites and accelerating the rate-determining step of PET butanolysis. Mg also induces pore coarsening to form a hierarchical mesoporous architecture, eliminating steric hindrance for the rapid diffusion of bulky PET oligomers. Moreover, Mg enriches surface basic sites (critical for ester bond cleavage, as confirmed by acid–base titration) and induces oxygen vacancies (promoting carbonyl adsorption and deoxygenation via in situ FT-IR). The optimized catalyst exhibits a low apparent activation energy (49.6 kJ/mol) and high p-xylene yield (99%), with exceptional recyclability by suppressing Cu sintering.

Nickel-based materials exhibit great potential for electrocatalytic upgrading of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-derived ethylene glycol (EG) and biomass-derived glycerol (GLY). However, the high energy barrier for generating active species (Ni3+OOH) and their limited ability to activate EG and GLY significantly impede the efficient conversion of EG and GLY. Herein, CuO@Ni(OH)2–x core–shell nanowires with abundant oxygen vacancies and p–n junction interfaces were successfully designed, which exhibited high activity and selectivity for EG/GLY-to-formic acid at industrial-grade current densities. Particularly, for EG electrooxidation, CuO@Ni(OH)2–x offered 300 mA cm–2 at an ultralow potential of 1.58 V vs RHE with ∼99% Faradaic efficiency for HCOOH production. Experimental and theoretical analysis revealed that (1) the oxygen vacancies and p–n junction synergistically mediate the atomic coordination and electronic structure of Ni2+–OH, which facilitates OH– adsorption and decreases the energy barrier of O–H bond cleavage, and hence accelerates the formation of Ni3+OOH; (2) the high exposure of Ni3+ enabled by oxygen vacancies enhances the adsorption of EG/GLY and the cleavage of the C–C bond, which boosts the kinetics of EG/GLY-to-formic acid. As a proof of concept, a solar-driven reactor equipped with a “one-click” operating system was designed for the upcycling of real-world PET bottles, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 86.7% for HCOOH. This work underlines the synergistic regulation of defects and p–n junctions in nickel-based electrocatalysts for efficient PET and biomass-derived alcohol electrooxidation.

Molecularly imprinted technique (MIT) has proven to be a significant tool in the analyzing area in virtue of its obvious advantages such as specific recognition, favorable stability to high temperature and higher sensitivity. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) technology has also been receiving enormous attention as a powerful tool in sensing fields. However, sensors based on the combination of MIT and ECL technologies have seldom been reported yet. Herein, we find that Ru(bpy) 3 2+ cannot only work as an efficient catalyst for photo-induced electron transfer–reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, but also as a sensing probe for ECL sensor. Based on this, we successfully construct ECL sensors via the combination of MIT and ECL techniques. In details, poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) and cross-linked PMAA were synthesized first via a well-controlled PET-RAFT polymerization using Ru(bpy) 3 2+ as catalyst under illumination of visible light with a wavelength of 460 nm, as confirmed by 1 H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Then, negatively-charged Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with average sizes of 20 nm were prepared and modified with Ru(bpy) 3 2+ via electrostatic incorporation. MIPs were prepared on the surface of AuNPs using melamine (MEL) as the template via PET-RAFT controlled cross-linking polymerization. The MIPs modified AuNPs (AuNPs-MIPs) were then fixed on the surface of working electrode with Nafion to achieve a solid-state ECL sensing platform employing Ru(bpy) 3 2+ as the ECL probes. The as-prepared sensor showed a wide detection range of 5.0 × 10 –13 − 5.0 × 10 −6 mol/L and a low detection limit of 1.0 × 10 –13 mol/L (S/N ≥ 3) was reached in the detection of MEL. Moreover, further tests for analyzing MEL structural analogues proved that the constructed ECL sensing platform could be utilized to detect various substances via specific recognitions.

Fe3+-incorporated hydrogels are particularly valuable for wearable devices due to their tunable mechanical properties and ionic conductivity. However, conventional immersion-based fabrication fundamentally limits hydrogel performance because of heterogeneous ion distribution, ionic leaching, and scalability limitations. To overcome these challenges, we report a novel one-pot strategy where controlled amounts of Fe3+are directly added to polyacrylamide-sodium acrylate (PAM-SA) precursor solutions, ensuring homogeneous ion distribution. Combining this with Photoinduced Electron/Energy Transfer Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization enables efficient hydrogel fabrication under open-vessel conditions, improving its scalability. Fe3+concentration achieves unprecedented modulation of mechanical properties: Young’s modulus (10 to 150 kPa), toughness (0.26 to 2.3 MJ/m3), and strain at break (800% to 2500%). The hydrogels also exhibit excellent compressibility (90% strain recovery), energy dissipation (>90% dissipation efficiency at optimal Fe3+levels), and universal adhesion to diverse surfaces (plastic, metal, PTFE, and cardboard). Finally, these Fe3+-incorporated hydrogels demonstrated high effectiveness as strain sensors for monitoring finger/elbow movements, with gauge factors dependent on composition. This work provides a scalable, oxygen-tolerant route to tunable hydrogels for advanced wearable devices.

A novel near-infrared (NIR) light induced photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition - fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization was developed and carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA) polymer brush was constructed on the PVA hydrogel via this one-spot method to enhance the antifouling properties. PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel displayed higher hydrophilicity , while the thermal properties decreased due to the lower decomposition properties of pCBMA and the partly destruction of crystal structure inside the PVA hydrogel. The antifouling properties of PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel was improved significantly because the surface hydration and steric repulsion effect of pCBMA polymer brush. Importantly, PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel could be considered as no cytotoxic effect or reduction of proliferation to primary human eyelid fibroblast cells following the guidelines stated by ISO 10993-5:2009 (direct contact test). Considering the excellent penetration ability of NIR, AlPc catalyzed PET-RAFT polymerization provided a new modification approach for various biological or medical materials on industrial scale.

Valorizing single-use plastic waste as an effective activator in environmental protection has gained great interest from policymakers, legislators, and scientific research communities. Herein, low-cost and highly porous alkali Fe/Mn-doped carbon nanomaterials derived from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste (MF/ c PET- x ) were fabricated via facile pyrolysis and alkali-metal impregnation methods. Detailed characterizations of MF- c PET- x demonstrated that the ratio of alkaline impregnation and pyrolysis temperature affects the porous characteristics, content, and size of active sites, specific surface area, and yield of carbon residue/nanocomposite. The main aim of this study was to evaluate and optimize the MF/ c PET- x applied for the detoxification of various kinds of pharmaceutical drugs ( tetracycline , naproxen , paracetamol , and levofloxacin ) and various dyestuff in their single, binary, ternary, and quaternary solutions. The magnetic porous MF/ c PET-1 was found to show a most effective PMS activation for single/multiple toxic pollutants removal attaining levels >91.0 % in a wide range of temperatures (5–35 °C) and pH (3.0–9.0), without significant detectable metal leaching (>0.16 mg L −1 ). The outstanding catalytic performance in complex water environments was mainly attributed to the deposition of Mn/Fe nanoparticles with small grain size on a polymeric scaffold, bimetal synergistic effect, high specific surface area, high stability, and excellent anti-interference capability against coexisting substances. Physicochemical properties of the recycled composite, masking, and EPR analyses confirmed that the dominant reactive species in the following order: 1 O 2 > OH > SO 4 − > O 2 − . This work offers a new and straightforward approach for preparing porous alloy composite from plastic waste for pollutant degradation in various water matrices.

To get better processability and preparing process of Poly (ethylene terephthalate) polymer, -NO 2 was used to modify Schiff Base to synthesize a novel flame retardant monomer of 5-([3-nitrobenzylidene] amino) isophthalic acid (BNA) to prepare flame retardant and anti-dripping PET copolyester (BNA n PETs), where the electron effect of -NO 2 passivate the cross-linking reactivity of BNA in BNA n PETs to enhance its cross-linking temperature to improve its processing zone with better processability. The results demonstrated that the cross-linking temperature of BNA n PETs was improved from the range of (250–348°C) to (355–385°C), and BNA accelerated the reaction of the polycondensation of PET for saving time of 42%. -NO 2 enhanced the residue char of BNA n PETs in high temperature and further improved its flame retardancy. BNA 10 PET with 7.2 mol% of BNA had LOI of 31.8% and V-0 of UL-94 without drip, and the introduction of –NO 2 did not change the flame retardant mechanism in BNA n PETs.

This study demonstrates a sustainable strategy for synthesizing MIL-53(Al) and ZSM-5 zeolite through dual-waste synergy using coal fly ash (CFA) and waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A sequential alkaline fusion-acid leaching protocol selectively fractionated CFA into aluminum-rich solutions and silica residues, while alkaline hydrolysis of PET liberated terephthalic acid (PTA) as organic ligands. The Al 3+ -PTA coordination under solvothermal conditions produced MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) exhibiting well-defined 1D rhombic channels with a high BET surface area (1303 m 2 ·g −1 ), whereas hydrothermal crystallization of silica residues yielded ZSM-5(CFA), which formed spherical aggregates composed of 100 nm nanosheets with 89.9 % yield and a surface area of 311 m 2 ·g −1 . Structural advantages were evidenced by exceptional adsorption performance: MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) achieved 96.24 % methylene blue removal at pH 7 (250 mg·L −1 ), outperforming rhodamine B (30.8 %) and methyl orange (66.4 %), as well as reagent-synthesized MIL-53(Al) Che (91.99 %). Both materials demonstrated exceptional CO 2 capture capacities (4.23 mmol·g −1 for MIL-53(Al)(CFA-PET) vs. 2.37 mmol·g −1 for ZSM-5(CFA) at 273 K/1 bar), attributable to MIL-53′s flexible framework enabling dynamic pore adjustment and ZSM-5′s rigid microporous channels favoring molecular sieving. This work establishes a closed-loop strategy for converting industrial and plastic wastes into functionally differentiated porous materials through element-targeted process design.
