Mechanical Robust GO/PVA Hydrogel for Strong and Recyclable Adhesion in Air, Underwater, and Underoil Environments

Yumin Wang,Ting Xu,Lide Xu,Gan Miao,Fangchao Li,Xiao Miao,Jingwei Lu,Zhiqiang Hou,Guina Ren,Xiaotao Zhu

Adhesive hydrogels are considered to be promising interfacial adhesive materials for various applications; however, their adhesive strength is significantly reduced when immersed in liquid environments (water and oil) due to obstruction of the liquid layer or swelling in liquid, and they could not always be reused when the failure of the adhesive performance occurred. Herein, a graphite oxide/poly(vinyl alcohol) (GO/PVA) hydrogel with strong adhesion in air and under liquid environments was developed by rationally regulating the interactions of water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the binary liquid system. The strong interaction between water and DMSO allowed the water layer of the GO/PVA hydrogel on the hydrogel surface to act as a shield to repel oil in air, under water, and even when immersed in oil, and it also endowed the obtained hydrogel with antiswelling property when immersed in water and oil. Importantly, the GO/PVA hydrogel could serve as an advanced adhesive to firmly bond different substrates in air, under water, and under oil, and interestingly, its dry and wet adhesive performance was repeatable and recyclable. This work is expected to be an important addition to the field of adhesive soft materials.

Mechanical robust, pH responsive hemicellulose-based PVA film with barrier performance for fruit preservation and monitoring

Junting Wang,Jiaxuan Liu,Zhiqiang Li,Qun Li

Barrier films are essential for food packaging, but conventional solutions hinder the circular economy. This study introduces hemicellulose-based antioxidant crosslinked composite films as a sustainable alternative. We develop pH-responsive films (K-B/PVA/OA) using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), silanized hemicellulose (KHC), blueberry anthocyanin (BA) as a pH indicator, and oxalic acid (OA) as a crosslinker. The films exhibit excellent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties and can be easily fabricated via solution casting with food-safe dispersions. The oxygen permeability ( OP ) decreases from 13.22 ± 0.65 × 10 −14 to 3.24 ± 0.98 × 10 −14  cm 3 ·μm/(m 2 ·d·Pa), and the water vapor permeability coefficient ( Pv ) drops from 15.43 ± 0.85 × 10 −13 to 7.27 ± 0.46 × 10 −13  g·cm/(cm 2 ·s·Pa). Tensile strength and modulus increase from 32.63 MPa and 765.80 MPa to 41.24 MPa and 1281.39 MPa. Esterification between PVA and hemicellulose raises surface energy, increasing the contact angle from 39.4° to 78.34°. Strawberries packaged in these films maintain their structure and exhibit a visible color change after 7 days, offering sustainable, real-time monitoring packaging.

Interfacial charge demulsification endowed dual-network photocatalytic hydrogen-bonded PVA@agarose membranes for oil-water separation

Jing Jing,Zhanjian Liu,Yuxin Fu,Haonan Liu,Xiguang Zhang,Meiling Li,Liyan Liu,Huaiyuan Wang

Hydrogel materials with hydrophilic cross-linked network exhibit remarkable super-wettability, enabling their widespread application in oily wastewater treatment. However, the single and loose structure lacks sufficient strength and porosity to resist long-term degradation. Herein, a structural synergistic molecular strategy was reported to introduce reinforcing phase structures and interfacial active sites into the polymer networks for long-term oil-water emulsion separation. The carbon skeleton was uniformly interspersed through the strongly hydrogen-bonded polymer chains via covalent bonds, resulting in a hydrogel network with high mechanical strength and exceptional flow conductivity, which maintained a separation flux of 1233 L m −2 h −1 after 20 separation cycles under gravitational force. Dense negative charges on the surface disrupted the internal charge stability of the oil-water emulsion, leading to remarkable demulsification with a separation efficiency exceeding 99 %. Simultaneously, the strong redox reaction of the photoheterojunction effectively removed organic dyes under visible light, enhancing the overall antifouling performance. This study provided a feasible strategy at the molecular level for optimizing the suitability of hydrogels for oil-water emulsion separation.

Incorporating MXene@MOF-303 Composites into Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to Fabricate Pervaporation Membranes for Desalination

Yadi Zhang,Haikuan Yuan,Xinyi Chen,Zhenlin Jiang,Jie Lu,Fan Xin

MXene has a multilayer structure, which can be peeled and layered into single or multilayer nanosheets, and it possesses multiple functional groups that can be easily modified. MOF-303, a kind of metal–organic framework material, was synthesized by the solvent hydrothermal method using aluminum ion as the center metal and 3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid as the organic ligand. In this paper, MOF-303 was grown in situ on Ti3C2Tx MXene to synthesize the MXene@MOF-303 composite, which combined the advantages of both MXene and MOF-303. Using the MXene@MOF-303 composite as blending fillers and a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as the substrate, an MXene@MOF-303/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/PAN composite membrane was fabricated. The composites and membranes were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and the pervaporation desalination of the composite membrane was also tested. The experimental results showed that the incorporation of MXene@MOF-303 composites improved the separation performance of the PVA membrane. The MXene@MOF-303/PVA/PAN composite membrane, loaded with 0.5 wt % of MXene@MOF-303, achieved a high flux of 15.87 kg·m–2·h–1 and a rejection of 99.84% when desalinating 3.5 wt % NaCl solution at 35 °C by pervaporation.

Novel pervaporation separation of PVA/CS blend membranes for the removal of DMF from industrial wastewater

Rongying Xia,Zhixiu Yang,Dayu Sun,Ziqi Wang,Mingzhu Yao,Huijun Liu,Lei Yang,Guanghui Ma,Lijing Gao,Ruiping Wei,Guomin Xiao,Xiaomei Pan

Achieving satisfactory separation of N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF)/water is still challenging in industrial wastewater treatment. To address this issue, a novel method involving pervaporation (PV) separation using polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) blend films is proposed. Various characterization methods confirmed the strong compatibility between PVA and CS, and the blending improved their mechanical properties and thermal stability. Heat treatment significantly reduced the swelling degree of the membranes. In a binary aqueous system with low concentrations of DMF, controlled separation can be achieved by adjusting the blending ratio of PVA to CS. The membranes exhibited preferential selectivity for DMF when the CS content is 40–75 wt%, which allowed for the concentration and recovery of DMF. At 20 °C with a feed of 10 wt% DMF solution, 2 h heat-treated PVA/CS-50 membrane exhibited the best performance, which could be attributed to its strong hydrogen bonding force, with a total flux of 484.09 g m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 5.41 for DMF. The PVA/CS blend membranes exhibit excellent acid and alkali resistant and are promising candidates for the separation and recovery of DMF from industrial wastewater by membrane technology.

Effect of Compressive Modulus of Porous PVA Hydrogel Coating on the Preventing Adhesion of Polypropylene Mesh

Dandan Wei,Yulin Huang,Pengfei Ren,Min Liang,Li Xu,Liuxin Yang,Tianzhu Zhang,Zhenling Ji

PP mesh is a widely used prosthetic material in hernia repair. However, visceral adhesion is one of the worst complications of this operation. Hence, an anti-adhesive PP mesh was developed by coating porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel on PP surface via freezing-thawing process method. The compressive modulus of porous PVA hydrogel coating was first regulated by the addition of porogen sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) at various quality ratios with PVA. As expected, the porous hydrogel coating displayed modulus more closely resembling that of native abdominal wall tissue. In vitro tests demonstrated the modified PP mesh showed superior coating stability, excellent hemocompatibility, and good cytocompatibility. In vivo experiments illustrated that PP mesh coated by the PVA4 hydrogel that mimicked the modulus of native abdominal wall could prevent adhesion effectively. Based on this, the rapamycin (RPM) was loaded into the porous PVA4 hydrogel coating to further improve anti-adhesive property of PP mesh. The Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson trichrome (MT) staining results verified that the resulting mesh could alleviate the inflammation response and reduce the deposition of collagen around the implantation zone. The biomimetic mechanical property and anti-adhesive property of modified PP mesh make it a valuable candidate for application in hernioplasty. This article is protected by copyright. A flexible and superhydrophobic PVDF-HFP@PVA bilayer enables high-performance radiative cooling and thermal management

Jun-Heng Fu,Qigong Zhang,Minglei Yan,Wei Tang,Yun Zeng,Yuntao Cui,Mingkuan Zhang,Hongwei Deng,Hao Kang,Xinlong Sun,Liang Qiao,Hongzhang Wang,Yang Zhao

Passive radiative cooling which dissipates heat from surfaces by reflecting sunlight and emitting radiation towards outer space, has garnered growing attention as an eco-friendly cooling strategy with zero-energy consumption. However, few studies focus on low-cost and multifunctional composite film fabricated by a straightforward and environmentally friendly method that is crucial for their large-scale applications. Herein, we introduce a facile, efficient, and scalable approach to fabricate a hydrophobic and polymer-dielectric poly (vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene (P(VDF-HFP)@PVA hydrogel Janus film (DPP), exhibiting exceptional radiative cooling and thermal management capabilities for diverse practical applications. With the introduction of ZnO, DPP showcases the optical capability with a solar reflectance of ≈93 % and an infrared emittance of ≈96 %, endowing it with remarkable radiative cooling performance. The synergistic integration of hydrogel phase change and radiation cooling capabilities offered by the P(VDF-HFP) layer enables the DPP to achieve a subambient cooling of 8.62 °C under direct sunlight. Moreover, when applied to the thermal management of electronic devices and fruit preservation due to the phase change property, the DPP effectively reduced surface temperatures by 10 °C and 15.5 °C respectively. Its simplicity and versatility suggest that it could be widely adopted for daytime passive radiation cooling, thereby expanding its practical applications across various fields.

Study of the Effect of Temperature and Microwave Action on the Structure of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)

Nannan Wu,Rui Ma,Gang Han,Shunli Ouyang,Liguo Ma,Dezhong Cai

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a widely utilized molecular polymer characterized by its strong water solubility, chemical resistance, and mechanical properties. Notably, it possesses the capability for biodegradation and finds extensive applications across various fields; thus, analyzing the fundamental properties of PVA is of paramount importance. Materials scientists have shown considerable interest in modifying polymers such as PVA. Among modification techniques, microwave irradiation has garnered significant attention due to its rapidity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This study investigates the effects of temperature and microwave irradiation on PVA binary solutions using Raman spectroscopy while also analyzing intermolecular hydrogen bonding within these solutions. The results indicate that increasing temperature disrupts the tetrahedral structure formed between PVA and water, leading to a transition toward a chain-like configuration; however, an enhancement in partial hydrogen bonding occurs at 313.15 K. Furthermore, analysis of the PVA binary solution post-microwave irradiation reveals that exposure to microwaves enhances hydrogen bonding within PVA while inducing a depletion reaction after 180 s of irradiation. Atomic force microscopy further demonstrates that this duration leads to pronounced molecular chain stacking phenomena. This paper substantiates that microwave irradiation serves as an effective method for modifying PVA, thereby offering a robust strategy for polymer modification applicable in materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Synergistic Enhancement of Barrier Performance in Silanized Modified Hemicellulose/PVA Composite Films through Oxalic Acid Crosslinking

Junting Wang,Zhiqiang Li,Jiaxuan Liu,Hao Wu,Mengmeng Guo,Weizhuang Wang,Chenyang Yan,Qun Li

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based materials are widely acknowledged for their commendable mechanical properties, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness. However, their limitations in water resistance, as well as water vapor/oxygen/ultraviolet (UV) barrier properties, hinder their application in the packaging industry. In this study, hemicellulose (HC) extracted from poplar wood was subjected to silane coupling agent modification, resulting in silylated modified hemicellulose (KHC) with enhanced hydrophobicity. Acting as a reinforcing filler for PVA, KHC demonstrated synergistic interactions with cost-effective green crosslinking agents, particularly oxalic acid (OA), during the preparation of a KHC/PVA/OA composite membrane using a solution casting method. SEM analysis revealed a compact and uniform network structure, accompanied by moderate tensile strength, good flexibility, and maximum elongation at a break of 132%. Compared to PVA film, the water resistance (swelling degree: 69.2%, contact angle: 85.0 degrees, solubility: 9.8%) of the composite film was significantly improved. At 10% OA content, the KHC/PVA/OA film demonstrated a 43.01% improvement in the water vapor barrier and a 36.83% enhancement in the oxygen barrier compared to the PVA film. In addition, the film with 10% OA content exhibited outstanding ultraviolet shielding performance. The improved compatibility among film components results from the enhanced synergistic effect of sulfhydryl groups introduced into the film and hydrogen bonds and ester bonds between the components. Hence, the developed KHC/PVA/OA composite membrane holds significant promise for diverse applications in the packaging industry, highlighting improved barrier performance and mechanical properties.

Selective transmembrane transport of iodide based on electrochemically induced iodide-trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane

Jingjing Zhao,Zhong Liu,Zhiyong Ji,Xiaowei An,Xiao Du,Fengfeng Gao,Xiaogang Hao,Jun Li

An electrochemically induced bismuth iodine oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyvinyl alcohol (BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA) composite membrane electrode with iodide ion trap (I − -trap) was fabricated by prerelease of I − under reduction potential. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane with unique lattice confinement structures was used for the selective extraction of I − in an electrochemically switched ion permselective (ESIP) process. In the ESIP system, the direct uptake and release of I − were realized by applying a cell voltage-pulse potential (CV-PP) coupling circuit on the membranes to switch the oxidation/reduction state. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane exhibited a maximum flux of 8.32 mg·m −2 ·min −1 and superior electrochemical stability. The separation factors of I − /Br − , I − /Cl − , I − /NO 3 − , and I − /SO 4 2− in the mixed solutions were 2.67, 3.71, 3.82, and 6.70 respectively. Therefore, such a novel I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane could be used in the ESIP system for the selective extraction of I − ions from low concentration solutions.

Anti-freezing and robust Ag-MOFs@PVA/XG hydrogel for flexible sensing and robotic state monitoring

Yilan An,Shiping Cheng,Qiaoling Ding,Dongbo Guan,Yi Hu,Yanli Dou

Flexible sensors are essential for human-machine interfaces and bioinspired intelligent robotics, yet achieving a balance between mechanical robustness and high sensitivity at lower temperatures remains a challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel sensor (PG 2 /Ag-MOFs-XG) was fabricated through physical crosslinking of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and xanthan gum (XG) in glycerol (Gly) and deionized water mixture via freeze-thaw circulation and NaCl crosslinking. The in situ growth of Ag-MOFs on XG molecular chains is facilitated by the electrostatic interactions between the hydroxyl groups and the carboxyl groups of XG and Ag + , restricting molecular chain movement, thereby enhancing comprehensive properties. The PG 2 /Ag-MOFs-XG hydrogel exhibits outstanding mechanical properties across a broad temperature range, with a 101 % increase in tensile strength (from 0.583 MPa to 1.17 MPa) at 25 °C and a 112 % increase (from 0.352 MPa to 0.746 MPa) at −18 °C, compared to the pure PVA hydrogel. Additionally, it demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to stretching (GF = 3.65) and compression (S = 3.38 × 10 −2  kPa −1 ). Furthermore, the hydrogel functions as a flexible sensor for monitoring human motion, assessing industrial robot performance, and detecting the tightness of robotic components. This work offers valuable insights into the development of portable, highly sensitive, and flexible sensors for intelligent robotics.

A rationally engineered PVA-HA hydrogel orchestrates osteochondral regeneration and matrix mineralization by cytoprotecting chondrocytes mitochondrion

Yumei Li,Zelin Sang,Shuangshuang Chen,Hui Li,Xiuli Ren,Xifan Mei,Zhenhua Chen

Functional hydrogels based on carbohydrates are continually gaining research attention owing to their biological suitability and rationally engineered functions. Injectable hydrogels developed based hyaluronic acid (HA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) have been reported to be attracting for osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. However, the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the oxidative stress microenvironment instigate chondrocyte mitochondrial damage and worsen cartilage degeneration, while conventional hydrogels cannot modulate oxidative stress. Consequently, this study proposed a strategy to rational design of dual-network PVA-HA hydrogels enables spatiotemporal control over anti-inflammatory cytokine release and ROS-scavenging functions, providing a disease-modifying therapeutic platform for OA through synergistic biomaterial-mediated microenvironment regulation. The designed hydrogels (PB-CaP@H) were enhanced by mineralized nanozymes (2 nm calcium phosphate (CaP) clusters modified Prussian blue (PB)), forming a composite hydrogel system that synergistically integrates near-infrared (NIR) response, anti-oxidative stress, and pro-cartilage mineralization functions. PB-CaP@H hydrogel has a porous structure (61 % porosity) and excellent mechanical properties (169 % elongation). Upon NIR irradiation, it warms the joint cavity to 48.9 °C, enhancing ROS scavenging (81 %) and accelerating mitochondrial repair. Micro-CT shows reduced cartilage damage. Molecular experiments confirm it repairs cartilage by up-regulating Col-II and SOX9. This injectable hydrogel offers a new OA treatment strategy by combining anti-oxidative stress therapy with cartilage repair.
