Heavy metal ions such as Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ impose a significant risk to the environment and human health due to their high toxicity and non-degradable characteristics. Herein, Al(OH) 3 -polyacrylamide chemically modified with dithiocarbamates (Al-PAM-DTCs) was synthesized using formaldehyde, diethylenetriamine, carbon disulfide, and sodium hydroxide for rapid and efficient removal of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ . The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, and transmission electron microscope measurements. Al-PAM-DTCs showed rapid removal of Cu 2+ (<30 min) and Pb 2+ (<15 min) with high adsorption capacities of 416.959 mg/g and 892.505 mg/g for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ respectively. Al-PAM-DTCs also had high capacities in removing suspended solids and metal ions simultaneously in turbid bauxite suspensions. FTIR, thermodynamic study, and elemental mapping were used to determine the adsorption mechanism. The rapid, convenient, and effective adsorption of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ indicated that Al-PAM-DTCs has great potential for practical applications in purification of other heavy metal ions from aquatic systems. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To understand the accumulation and uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals by plants is an important part of the assessment of phytoremediation for PAHs and heavy metals co-contaminated soil. This study was an investigation of the accumulation and uptake of pyrene and lead (Pb) by Scirpus triqueter under the condition of alkyl polyglucoside (APG) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) combined application. The results indicated that the accumulation of Pb by S. triqueter was significantly improved by NTA and APG addition into the soil. The pyrene accumulation in plant was also increased after application of APG when compared to the control treatment. However, the pyrene accumulation was decreased when APG was applied together with NTA. SEM and TEM images of root surface suggested that more Pb in the soil transferred to the plant by combined application of APG and NTA. More importantly, TEM images of xylem cells of S.triqueter root showed that permeability of cell membrane was improved by application of APG.

A common concern in the approval of nanotechnology for water treatment is whether there are advantages of these nanomaterials over conventional water treatment reagents. In this work, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is compared with lime (Ca(OH) 2 ), the most widely used heavy metal precipitant, for Pb(II) and Zn(II) removal, in laboratory and field experiments. Water chemistry, treatment efficiencies and reaction products of the two reagents are compared and the study shows that the moderate solution pH of nZVI and its seed effect play vital roles in producing high-quality effluents. The results are then verified in a field continuous-flow experiment using tons of lime and kilos of nZVI. The results show that sub-ppm levels (∼0.1 mg/L) of Pb(II) and Zn(II) could not be achieved via lime precipitation alone, due to the solubility limits of metal hydroxides and their re-dissolution caused by the strong alkalinity of lime. In comparison, stable and lower levels of Pb(II) and Zn(II) were easily attained using nZVI, due to its multifunctional properties and good tolerance for influent fluctuation enabled by its inherent pH-stabilizing nature. SEM characterizations, particle size analyses and quiescent settling experiments show the ability of nZVI to generate large and consolidated solids that are amenable to gravitational separation. The study shows several key advantages of nZVI over lime technology in Pb(II) and Zn(II) removal. As lime is widely used for heavy metal removal, this work provides an effective advanced treatment process to supplement lime-based treatment methods.

The first lead tellurate–nitrate nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystal, Pb9Te2O13(OH)(NO3)3, featuring a 3D anionic diamondlike toplogical structural motif formulated as [Pb9O13]8– constructed by unique nonanuclear basket-shaped Pb@Pb8O14 clusters has been hydrothermally achieved, in which the Pb@Pb8O14 cluster shows a core–shell structure with one PbO10 polyhedron enclosed by eight PbOx (x = 3 and 4) polyhedera via edge and face sharing. The hexavalent Te in TeO5(OH) octahedra is linked to a [Pb9O13]8– cluster to form a rare [Pb9Te2O13(OH)]3+ cationic framework. The compound demonstrates a powder second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of about 1.2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) as well as a wide transparency range. Calculations on the local dipole moment and SHG coefficient reveal that the net polarization is zero because of a Kleinman-forbidden point group. Further analysis shows that the SHG response results from structure-induced variations by thermal vibrations of the lattice rather than the intrinsic dipole moment, which offers another insight on the design of new NLO materials.

In this study, a novel bamboo activated carbon (BAC) with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionality was prepared by direct grafting in the presence of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a crosslinking agent. The BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was characterized by SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, XPS and its adsorption property for removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) under various experimental conditions was also investigated. The characterization results reflected that EDTA was successfully assembled on the surface of the BAC and average pore size increased from 4.10 to 4.83 nm as BAC grafted with EDTA. Adsorption data fitted very well in Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As compared with the raw BAC, the maximum adsorption capacities of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA for the Pb(II) and Cu(II) increased from 45.45 to 123.45 mg g −1 and from 6.85 to 42.19 mg g −1 , since the existence of EDTA on modified BAC promoted the formation of chemical complex. The removal of heavy metal ions mainly depended on the complexation with EDTA and the electrostatic attractions with negatively charged surface of BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA. The adsorption of Pb(II)/Cu(II) on the BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA was pH dependent and pH 5–6 was considered an optimum. However, lower temperature favored the adsorption and the maximum adsorption was recorded at 20 °C. In addition, BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA had an excellent reusability with about 40% decline in the adsorption capacity for Pb(II) after fifth reuse. Insignificant influences of co-existing cations and natural organic matter (NOM) were found on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II). All the results demonstrate that BAC@SiO 2 -EDTA is a potential adsorbent for metal ions in wastewater.

A novel nanocomposite based on black wattle (BW) tannin and nanocellulose was prepared and applied in heavy metal ions adsorptive removal from aqueous solutions. Firstly, nanocrystalline cellulose was oxidized by sodium periodate to get dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC). BW tannin was then covalently immobilized onto DANC, which was used as both the matrix and crosslinker, to obtain tannin-nanocellulose (TNCC) composite. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR, AFM, and TG. The successful immobilization was confirmed by the chromogenic reaction between FeCl 3 and TNCC and FT-IR analysis. AFM images revealed that TNCC was ellipsoidal particles with lengths ranging from 100–400 nm. Zeta potential measurement showed that TNCC was negative charged at a pH range from 1–12. Compared to the original tannin, the thermal stability of TNCC was slightly increased by the addition of nanocellulose. TNCC demonstrated the maximum adsorption efficiency at pH 2 for Cr(VI) and pH 6 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The adsorption for these three metal ions followed pseudo second-order kinetics, indicating the chemisorption nature. The adsorption isotherms all fitted well with the Sips model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 51.846 mg g −1 , 53.371 mg g −1 and 104.592 mg g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr (VI), respectively.

Silica-coated magnetite (Fe3O4@SiO2) nanoparticles functionalized with amino, imino and sulfonic groups (Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP) were successfully synthesized via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization of m-phenylenediamine (mPD) and m-sulfophenylenediamine-4-sulfonic acid (SP) monomers, and utilized for selective removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. It was revealed by the characterizations that the polymers formed on Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were the true copolymers with a mPD–SP unit, rather than a mixture of mPD and SP homopolymers. Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites could be easily separated from aqueous solutions within 30 s. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) (83.23 mg g−1) and Cr(VI) (119.06 mg g−1) on Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites were obtained at the mPD/SP molar ratios of 95 : 5 and 50 : 50, respectively. Moreover, satisfactory selective removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from their mixtures with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions were exhibited by the Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (95 : 5) and Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (50 : 50), respectively. The Pb(II) adsorption equilibrium was reached within 5 min by Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP (95 : 5). The adsorption data of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) were both fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) on Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP nanocomposites included five processes, namely: ion-exchange, complexation adsorption, reduction reaction, electrostatic attraction and physical adsorption. The enhanced adsorption performance of nanoparticle-based magnetic adsorbents for selective removal of heavy metal ions can be achieved with such a copolymerization strategy.

A novel porous succinylated bioadsorbent was prepared by the partial enzymatic hydrolysis of bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla) and its subsequent modification with succinic anhydride. Pb(II) removal from solutions that also contained sodium chloride and an amino acid was investigated using the bioadsorbent. Enzymatic hydrolysis increased the number of accessible hydroxyl groups and surface area of the raw bamboo, and created many pores within the material. The porous succinylated bioadsorbent exhibited high efficiency for Pb(II) binding. The sodium chloride content significantly decreased the Pb(II) adsorption capacity, whereas a minor effect was observed in the presence of arginine. The experimental data could be accurately described by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption proceeded via an ion exchange mechanism. Even in a solution containing sodium chloride and arginine, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) by the porous succinylated bioadsorbent was 99.5 mg/g at 303 K.

In this study, sulfonated expanded graphite (SEG) was prepared through a mechanochemical method between EG, N,N-dimethylformamide, and a sulphur trioxide pyridine complex. XRD, XPS, FT-IR, BET, SEM-EDS, and zeta potentials were used to assess the characterizations of SEG. Thereafter, the effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, temperature, and contact time on adsorption performances were investigated. Results demonstrated that SEG shows superior adsorption properties to remove Pb(II) with high efficiency, and the removal capacity reached 325.12 mg g−1. The Langmuir model fit the equilibrium data better than either the Freundlich model or the Temkin model. Based on kinetic experiments, the adsorption of Pb(II) with SEG was perfectly described by a pseudo-second order kinetics model. According to thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Adsorption–desorption results showed a superior regeneration and cyclic performance of SEG as well. In addition, results of the adsorption mechanism indicated that the sulfonated functional groups played a significant role during the adsorption process.

In the flotation separation of Mo-Pb bulk concentrate and the purification process of Pb-containing molybdenite concentrate, depressants are typically added to depress galena or molybdenite, aiming to obtain high-quality flotation products. Previous studies have focused on the depression of galena. In this study, gallic acid (GA) was utilized as a molybdenite depressant during Mo-Pb flotation separation. Single mineral flotation experiments showed that pH notably influenced galena and molybdenite flotation with GA, particularly at pH 10, displaying the most substantial recovery difference. Mixed mineral flotation experiments revealed GA’s selective depression on molybdenite. At the optimal dosage of GA, the Mo recovery was reduced by 76.62 percentage points, while the Pb recovery remained unaffected. The depression and separation mechanisms of GA were investigated using contact angle, infrared spectroscopy, Zeta potential, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, first-principles calculations analysis, and interface interaction free energy calculations. The results indicate that GA treatment significantly reduces the hydrophobicity of molybdenite surfaces; however, it slightly enhances the hydrophobicity of galena surfaces. At pH 10, the primary species in GA solution is HGA 3- . It adsorbs on PbO species of the galena surface as Pb-GA complexes and tends to detach from the surface at high adsorption capacity, resulting in galena not being depressed by GA. Differently, GA adsorbs on the molybdenite surface through hydrophobic attraction force, rendering it hydrophilic. Additionally, after treatment with potassium butyl xanthate (PBX), the hydrophobicity of GA-treated galena is significantly enhanced, while the hydrophobicity of GA-treated molybdenite is not restored. This is because PBX can adsorb stably on GA-treated galena, but its adsorption on GA-treated molybdenite is hindered by the pre-adsorbed GA.

We report here the synthesis and characterization of two endohedral Zintl-ion clusters, [Fe4Sn18]4− and [Fe4Pb18]4−, which contain rhombic Fe4 cores. The Fe–Fe bond lengths are all below 2.5 Å, distinctly shorter than in the corresponding Cu clusters, indicating the presence of Fe–Fe bonding. Subtle differences in the structure of the Fe4 core between the two clusters suggest that the change in tetrel element causes a change in electronic ground state, with a very short Fe–Fe bond length of 2.328 Å present across the diagonal of the rhombus in the lead case.

Several issues plague polymer and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) composites, including the tendency of CaCO 3 particles to aggregate and detach easily, as well as a limited number of adsorption sites. To address the aforementioned issues, a novel large-particle hollow shell-structured PVA-encapsulated nano-CaCO 3 aerogel (PCC) was prepared. The characterization results indicate that the PCC (∼3 mm) possess a three-dimensional network structure with a stereoscopic arrangement of big and small pores. The adsorption of Pb(II) adheres to pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics and the adsorption equilibrium follows the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 482.85 mg/g at 313 K for Pb(II). The PCC exhibits good selectivity and stability of adsorption towards Pb(II), retaining 92.6 % of its initial adsorption capacity after seven cycles. The large-particle morphology of this material demonstrates significant potential for effectively removing Pb(II) in wastewater treatment applications.
