High catalytic activity of Pt-Co/G (15 wt% Pt) alloy particles are synthesized on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and reduced by simple ethylene glycol (EG). The results of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis show that the average size of metal particles is ca. 4.1 nm, and the metal particals are highly dispersed on the graphene. The cyclic voltammogram was used for evaluating the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst. In addition, the performance of this catalyst was investigated in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). It produced a maximum power density of 1378 mW/m 2 , which was quite close to that with a Pt/C (20 wt% Pt) cathode (1406 mW/m 2 ); the Coulombic efficiency reaches 71.6%, which was better than that of the Pt/C (52.0 %). And the total cost of Pt- Co/G catalyst were lower than that of Pt/C catalyst. Thus, the Pt-Co/G probably provides a new solution for finding effective cathode materials for MFC.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are appealing to resolve the environmental and energy issues but are still heavily inhibited by the dilemma of fabricating effective and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, highly open Pt3Cu nanoframes and one-dimensional, hollow titanium nitride architectures are both successfully explored and implemented as the new system to replace the traditional Pt–carbon motif. The ORR performance of the obtained electrocatalyst shows specific and mass activities of 5.32 mA cm–2 and 2.43 A mgPt–1, respectively, which are 14.4 and 11.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. Notably, the novel catalyst also exhibits high stability and a much slower performance degradation than that of the benchmarked Pt3Cu/C with the same durability testing procedures. The comprehensive data confirm that the new type of catalyst possesses a high charge transfer during the ORR process, and the unique structure and synergistic effects between anchored Pt and the support mainly contributes to the high stability. This work provides a strategic method for designing an effective ORR electrocatalyst with desirable stability.

Cocatalysts for H 2 production are often made from noble metals, which are expensive and rare. Cocatalysts made from cheap and abundant elements are therefore highly desirable for economically viable H 2 production. Here, we demonstrate that amorphous transitional metal borides (TMBs)—made from abundant materials and costing less than 0.1% of the price of Pt cocatalysts—are effective substitutes for Pt-based cocatalysts and result in superior H 2 production via water-splitting under visible light irradiation. Under visible-light driven photocatalytic water-splitting, using TMBs as cocatalysts for nanostructured NiCoB/CdS composites achieved an extraordinary H 2 production of 144.8 mmol h −1 g −1 , up to 36 times greater than that observed when using CdS alone. The apparent quantum efficiency was measured as 97.42% at 500 nm, which is the highest value reported for CdS photocatalysts. The hydrogen atom adsorption energy (ΔE(H)) and hydrogen molecule adsorption energy (ΔE(H 2 )) of NiB, NiCoB and Pt have been calculated for the first time. Compared with Pt cocatalyst, amorphous TMBs cocatalysts more readily adsorb hydrogen protons and desorb molecular hydrogen during the photocatalytic process. Superior performance of TMBs as cocatalyst, much better than Pt, can be attributed to its powerful trapping electrons ability and highly adsorption of protons. These findings provide a straightforward and effective route to produce cheap and efficient cocatalysts for large-scale water splitting.

Platinum nanoparticle (NP)-functionalized flower-like mesoporous SnO 2 with a high specific surface area (31.6 m 2 g –1 ) and large pore diameter (32.5 nm) was synthesized using a double-template technique. The presence of Pt NPs was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Pt NPs with a size distribution of 2–4 nm were anchored on mesopores of the pre-synthesized three-dimensional SnO 2 nanoflowers upon physical mixing. The resulting Pt NP-decorated three-dimensional SnO 2 mesoporous nanoflowers were incorporated into a gas sensor to detect H 2 S. The Pt–SnO 2 sensor exhibited enhanced gas sensing properties toward H 2 S, with a 100 ppb detection limit, fast response, low working temperature, excellent stability, and good selectivity. The 0.3 wt% Pt–SnO 2 sensor exhibited a high response and excellent selectivity to H 2 S at room temperature (response value to 5 ppm H 2 S at 30 °C was 160). The significant improvements in gas sensing properties were attributed to the synergistic effect of the mesoporous nanostructure induced by the double-template method and the catalytic sensitization of the Pt NPs. These findings offer guidance for designing mesoporous materials and low-temperature H 2 S sensors.

The anode Pt catalyst of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is susceptible to poisoning by trace amounts of CO in hydrogen, which restricts its large-scale commercialisation. Therefore, developing PEMFC catalysts with CO tolerance is crucial as it would reduce the requirement for hydrogen purity. In this study, we present a CO-tolerant catalyst for the PEMFC anode synthesised by loading Pt onto a polyaniline-modified conductive carbon composite support (Pt/C-PANI). The results showed that the catalyst containing 5% PANI in the composite support (Pt/C-PANI-5) exhibited optimal hydrogen oxidation reaction activity and CO tolerance. Electrochemical tests showed that the current drop of Pt/C-PANI-5 was 6.8%, compared to 20% and 12% for Pt/C-sys and commercial PtRu/C catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, results of the single-cell test confirmed improved CO tolerance. These findings provide a potential solution for developing cost-effective fuel cell catalysts with improved CO tolerance.

Dual-mode imaging combining photoacoustic and ultrasound modalities holds great promise for comprehensive tissue characterization. In traditional dual-mode imaging systems, however, the opaque ultrasound transducers are integrated in complex optical and ultrasound paths, leading to compromises in imaging efficiency and sensitivity. To address these challenges, we design and produce highly transparent Pb(Mg,Nb)O 3 PbTiO 3 ceramics with exceptional transparency of 68%, alongside a remarkable ultrahigh piezoelectric d 33 of 1500 pC/N. Leveraging this material, we fabricate a high-sensitivity transparent piezoelectric ultrasound transducer (TPUT) with a center frequency of 16 MHz and a bandwidth of 30%, which seamlessly integrating ultrasound and photoacoustic capabilities into one system to achieve simultaneous photoacoustic/ultrasound dual-mode imaging, showcasing a remarkable sensitivity for deep-tissue detection ( e.g. , 7.5 mm thick chicken breast meat). Additionally, in vivo photoacoustic imaging of subcutaneous microvasculature in a mouse ear was successfully achieved via 28 MHz TPUT. Our innovation not only advances imaging performance but also offers a cost-effective solution, paving the way for transformative biomedical imaging applications.

In recent years, self-propelled micro/nanomotors have attracted great attention in environmental remediation. However, their progress in real-world applications is still constrained by crucial issues such as manufacturing processes, low yields, poor adaptability, and poor motion ability. In this work spherical bubble-propelled micromotors (i.e., Pt-ZnIn2S4) were fabricated with a strong motion ability and photocatalytic performance to replace conventional mechanical stirring for photocatalytic water purification. A simple, efficient, and highly productive ultraviolet reduction method is employed to deposit Pt on the ZnIn2S4 microspheres assembled by nanosheets. The Pt nanoparticles (NPs) can promote the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers between semiconductor interfaces and enhance their visible light absorption due to their strong electron-accepting ability (Cocatalyst) and localized surface plasmon resonance effect (Plasmonic metal NPs). In addition, due to the asymmetrical structure of the Pt-ZnIn2S4 micromotor, Pt NPs can decompose H2O2 to produce oxygen bubbles, driving the micromotor to move rapidly (Engine), up to a maximum speed of 970 ± 150 μm s−1. Compared with traditional photocatalysts, the movement of the Pt-ZnIn2S4 micromotor and the migration and collapse of the generated bubbles increase the solution stirring effect and mass transfer effect, thereby achieving efficient and rapid degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) without mechanical stirring. The degradation mechanism of organic pollutants is mainly based on the production of reactive oxygen species in photocatalytic processes. This study shows that the combination of photocatalysts, plasmonic metal NPs, and the strong motion ability of bubble-propelled micromotors presented the potential for practical environmental pollution remediation.

The reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction serves as a highly flexible and critical pathway for converting CO 2 into CO, with Pt-based catalysts having been widely investigated. Here, a series of platinum-rare earth (RE) subnanometric bimetallic clusters (SBCs) were successfully prepared on carbon support by the potassium vapor reduction method. Their structure and electronic properties, along with catalytic performance, were systematically characterized and evaluated. The Pt-RE SBC catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity, maintaining CO selectivity above 95% at high CO 2 conversion levels and demonstrating stable operation over 100 h at 600 °C. Furthermore, the influence of different supports (carbon black and CeO 2 ) on the catalytic performance was compared. It was found that Pt-Sc SBCs supported on the carbon exhibited better dispersion, smaller particle size, and superior catalytic performance relative to the CeO 2 supported counterpart. This study provides new insights into the design of highly efficient and stable RWGS catalysts, highlighting the key role of the Pt-RE SBC interface synergistic effect and support selection, which is of great significance for the resource utilization of CO 2 .

Resistive switching (RS) in oxide-based memristive devices is strongly affected by the stochastic formation and rupture of oxygen vacancies ( V o ) conductive filaments, which limits device-to-device uniformity, cycle-to-cycle stability, and overall reliability. To mitigate such randomness, HfO 2 thin films were prepared via a sol–gel route at different post-annealing temperatures, and Pt point defects or interlayer defects were further introduced. The synergistic effects of annealing temperature and Pt-related defects on RS characteristics were systematically evaluated. Electrical measurements reveal that HfO 2 films annealed at 500 °C exhibit the most desirable RS behavior and overall performance. At lower annealing temperatures, excessive organic residues and insufficient film densification suppress the formation of stable conductive filaments, resulting in weak switching behavior. In contrast, excessively high temperatures induce grain coarsening and grain boundary reduction, and may simultaneously generate excess V o , leading to degraded insulation (i.e., reduced high-resistance state (HRS)) and thus weakened RS performance. Furthermore, a moderate density of Pt point defects induces local electric-field distortion, which is believed to promote directional V o migration, and enhance filament formation reproducibility, thereby contributing to improved switching stability. However, when the defect density becomes too high (strong Pt aggregation or layer-like Pt intercalation), the film insulation is compromised, HRS resistance decreases, and RS performance deteriorates. In this study, the sample with 20 s Pt sputtering exhibited the optimal RS performance. Overall, rational design of artificial defect structures combined with appropriate thermal treatment can help suppress the stochastic nature of filament evolution and consequently improve switching stability and device reliability. These findings provide experimental guidance and mechanistic insight into defect-engineering strategies for highly stable RS memory devices.

Given the exorbitant cost and rarity of platinum (Pt), the rational design of Pt-based electrocatalysts enabling economical and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis remains a major bottleneck for widespread application. A facile hydrothermal strategy was employed in this work to successfully synthesize Pt nanoparticles loaded onto MoO 3 /MoO 2 heterojunction. The Pt MoO 3 /MoO 2 – 6 (denoting a hydrothermal reaction time of 6 h) catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER performance, achieving low overpotentials of 25 mV in acidic and 30 mV in alkaline medium at 10 mA cm⁻ 2 . DFT calculations reveal that the metal-support interaction between Pt and MoO x reduces the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption during the HER process, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics of HER. Theoretical and experimental analysis indicate that the interaction between Pt and MoO 3 /MoO 2 heterojunction enhances charge transfer between Pt MoO 3 /MoO 2 and hydrogen atoms by modifying the electronic structure, optimizing hydrogen adsorption and ultimately boosting electrocatalytic HER activity. The current investigation offers an effective, facile method for the deliberate construction of high catalytic activity noble metal decorated on MoO x -based catalysts for wide pH ranges. Defects in photocatalysts strongly influence charge transfer behavior, and selectively exploiting defect-rich interfacial sites as chemically addressable anchors provides a new pathway for atom-economical hydrogen production. Here, we report a defect anchoring strategy that selectively exploits sulfur-defect-rich interfacial sites as chemically specific docking sites for Pt–S coordination, enabling stable Pt deployment at an ultralow loading of only 0.084 wt%. In situ spectroscopy and first-principles calculations reveal that these defect-anchored Pt–S motifs efficiently extract electrons from interfacial sulfur sites and optimize hydrogen adsorption thermodynamics for accelerated HER kinetics. The optimized photocatalyst delivers hydrogen evolution rates of 22.43 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light and 91.35 mmol g −1 h −1 under full-spectrum irradiation, exhibiting excellent long-term stability. When immobilized as a scalable catalyst film via an immersion process, it achieves an areal H 2 flux of 331.34 mmol m −2 h −1 . More broadly, we show that the same defect-guided Pt-anchoring rule operates across multiple ZnIn 2 S 4 -based heterojunctions, highlighting a transferable site-definition strategy for atom-economical noble-metal deployment. Ultimately, this approach redefines interfacial defects in heterojunction photocatalysts as programmable chemical sockets for noble-metal placement, establishing a general blueprint for atom-economical and scalable solar hydrogen generation.

The shielding effect effectively suppresses the chemical adsorption between platinum and sulfur species and hinders the formation of Pt-S bonds. • Electrons transfer from Pt to the carbon encapsulation layer to construct metal-carbon interfacial structures, which endows the catalyst with superior hydrogenation activity in sulfur-containing environments. • Carbon-encapsulated structure enhances the structural stability and sulfur resistance of the catalyst. • Experimental characterizations combined with DFT calculations elucidate the underlying reaction mechanism. The presence of sulfur-containing impurities in industrial feedstocks leads to the rapid deactivation of metal-based catalysts, which originates from the specific recognition between the d orbitals of metallic active sites and the p orbitals of sulfur. In this work, a carbon-encapsulation catalyst strategy was employed to shield this specific d–p orbital recognition effect. The Pt-base catalyst showed a sharp 92.28% loss in activity after sulfur poisoning, whereas the carbon-encapsulated catalyst maintained high efficiency and stability, sustaining a reaction rate of 83.41 min –1 even at high mercaptan concentrations (7945 ppm). Moreover, it exhibited excellent reusability with negligible deactivation after five cycles. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the carbon shell serves as “armor” for Pt active sites, physically isolating them from sulfur impurities and suppressing the hybridization between Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and the S 2p orbitals. Meanwhile, Pt nanoparticles induce electron transfer to the carbon layer, converting it into a conductive “metallic carbon” that enhances hydrogenation activity. This work provides new insights into the anti-sulfur poisoning mechanism of catalytic hydrogenation. Download: Download high-res image (255KB) Download: Download full-size image
