As one of the most important parameters to characterize the organic pollution of water, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) determined through a rapid, in situ and on line method is very attractive. In this paper, a new BOD biosensor has been developed, which are composed of the ecofriendly precursor of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ( S. cerevisiae ) embedded in bacterial cellulose (BC) matrix and the Ketjen Black (KB) modified glassy-carbon electrode. Furthermore, a doublemediator system is constructed using potassium ferricyanide and menadione in reaction cell to transfer electron from the microbe to electrode. The responses of glucose glutamic acid (GGA) standard solutions are amperomertrically measured with an applied potential of 0.25 V versus Hg/Hg 2 Cl 2 in a three-electrode system. Under the optimum conditions, the (BC/ S. cerevisiae -menadione)/KB modified electrode shows a high operational stability with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.16% (fourteen assays), a good repeatability (RSD=3.10%), a fast response time (in 20 minutes) and a wide linear range (from 10–220 mg O 2 l −1 ). The BOD values measured by this method have been highly correlated with the standard BOD 5-day method for wastewater samples (R 2 =0.9859, n=3), indicating that it can meet the requirement of BOD rapid measurement.

Multilayer graphene was prepared in this study by microwave burst method. Cu9S5/CoS/graphene and CuS/CoS2/graphene composites were obtained by hydrothermal method to regulate the molecular structure and combination of Cu and Co metal sulfides on graphene
substrate. Graphite oxide was doped by hydrothermal method, and then Cu9S5/CoS/graphene composite was prepared by microwave explosion method. Raman, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the self-made graphene. Results showed that the multilayer graphene had a bag-like
structure which was beneficial to anchor sulfide. Three graphene-based composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy spectrum analysis and electrochemical properties. Moreover, results showed that CuS/CoS2/graphene had the best electrochemical
performance, and its specific capacity reached 324 F/g when the current density was 1 A · g–1, which was much higher than that of the other two samples. Capacity retention rate, interfacial charge transfer resistance and electrolyte diffusion resistance also have advantages.

A cathode host with strong sulfur/polysulfide confinement and fast redox kinetics is a challenging demand for high-loading lithium–sulfur batteries. Recently, porous carbon hosts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide attention due to their unique spatial structure and customizable reaction sites. However, the loading and rate performance of Li–S cells are still restricted by the disordered pore distribution and surface catalysis in these hosts. Here, we propose a concept of built-in catalysis to accelerate lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) conversion in confined nanoreactors, i.e., laterally stacked ordered crevice pores encompassed by MoS2-decorated carbon thin layers. The functions of S-fixability and LiPS catalysis in these mesoporous cavity reactors benefit from the 2D interface contact between ultrathin catalytic MoS2 and conductive C pyrolyzed from Al-MOF. The integrated function of adsorption–catalysis–conversion endows the sulfur-infused C@MoS2 electrode with a high initial capacity of 1240 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C, long life cycle stability of at least 1000 cycles at 2 C, and high rate endurance up to 20 C. This electrode also exhibits commercial potential in view of considerable capacity release and reversibility under high sulfur loading (6 mg cm–2 and ∼80 wt %) and lean electrolyte (E/S ratio of 5 μL mg–1). This study provides a promising design solution of a catalysis–conduction 2D interface in a 3D skeleton for high-loading Li–S batteries.

A novel aqueous Sn-S complex solution was applied as precursor to fabricate SnO 2 electron selective layers (ESLs) for the hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The tin and sulfur powder were directly dissolved in a (NH 4 ) 2 S water solution to form Sn-S precursor. After depositon and annealing, the SnO 2 film was formed, presenting as a low cost and enviromental friendly method for preparation of ESL. The films showed excellent transmittance at visible wavelength range. Moreover, the method exhibited high compatibility for doping using Cu, Cd, Li, and Zn elements. Zn doping (0.05 M) in the as-prepared SnO 2 ESL significantly improved perovskite solar cells (PSCs) performance. The highest PCE of 13.17% was achived with 15% enhancement compared to that of undoped SnO 2 ESL samples. TiCl 4 modifications on SnO 2 film improved photovoltaic performance to 14.45%, but resulted in the poor long-term stability, around 80% more degredation than that of PSCs based on Zn-doped SnO 2 films.

Ternary metal oxide , such as ZnCo 2 O 4 has attracted widespread attention as electrode material for supercapacitors owing to its high theoretical activity and rich redox reactions arising from the synergistic effects between two different metal species. However, the compromised electrochemical performance due to low electronic conductivity and deficient active sites of ZnCo 2 O 4 impedes its practical applications. Herein, S-doped ZnCo 2 O 4 microspindles (denoted as S-ZnCo 2 O 4 ) have been obtained by simple hydrothermal synthesis followed by calcining and sulfurization treatments. It is indicated that the doping of S results in the formation of defects and disorders without altering the crystalline structure of ZnCo 2 O 4 , which is beneficial for charge transfer, and exposing more active sites. Taking advantage of the desired structure and composition, the S-ZnCo 2 O 4 displays superior electrochemical properties when acting as an electrode material for supercapacitors. It delivers a high specific capacity of 214.1C g −1 (522 F/g) at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 , which is almost 8.5 times that of the ZnCo 2 O 4 (25 C g −1 , 61 F/g). Moreover, the S-ZnCo 2 O 4 also shows good rate capability (82% at 10 A g −1 ) and excellent electrochemical stability (78% retention after 5000 cycles). This work demonstrates that anion doping can be an efficacious strategy of boosting electrochemical performance.

Wound repair is a dynamic and complex process that involves various interactions between repair cells, growth factors and the extracellular matrix. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in wound healing, including causing the contraction of wound surfaces, dilating blood vessels, participating in inflammation, and promoting collagen synthesis, angiogenesis, and fibroblast proliferation. Here, we prepared a novel keratin-based nitric oxide donor, called S-nitrosated keratin (KSNO). Then, KSNO was coelectrospun with polyurethane (PU) and gelatin (Gel) to produce PU/Gel/KSNO biocomposite mats. The prepared mats released NO without cytotoxicity, promoted the proliferation of L929 murine fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and inhibited bacterial growth. These mats could also accelerate the cell adhesion and growth along the random arrangement of electrospun fibers, and simulate the structure of the natural extracellular matrix to provide good scaffolds for cell. The effect of PU/Gel/KSNO on promoting wound healing was investigated on a full-thickness excisional cutaneous wound model in rats. The results demonstrated that these mats accelerated wound healing without inflammatory reaction. In conclusion, PU/Gel/KSNO mats display excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility and have potential in the field of wound repair.

Nowadays, obtaining photocatalysts with a narrow band gap that can degrade contamination under visible light has been a hot topic in the field of environmental protection. In this report, the S-doped hierarchically structured ZnSnO3 with a high S doping ratio, a narrow band gap, and a large specific surface area is synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method. ZIF-8 was used as the Zn source to synthesize ZnSnO3 with a hollow structure for the first time. Characterization techniques to confirm doping by S in the ZnSnO3 structure include the use of X-ray photoelectron and energy-dispersive spectroscopies. Owing to the hollow-structured ZnSnO3 precursor, S-doped ZnSnO3 demonstrated a large specific surface area (up to 80.63 m2/g) that is favorable for the strong adsorption of reactants. In addition, the S-doping ratio is as high as 90%, which is much higher than that of other related work. Because of the elevated S 3p energy level, the band gap of S-doped ZnSnO3 is rapidly decreased from 3.7 to 2.4 eV, which gives S-doped ZnSnO3 a higher efficiency in the utilization of visible light. Because of the enhanced adsorption capabilities and decreased band gap, the as-synthesized nanocomposite can be used as a high-efficiency photocatalyst for wastewater treatment. About 36% rhodamine B (RhB) is absorbed by S-doped ZnSnO3 even before 350 W Xe-lamp irradiation. After being irradiated under visible light for about 80 min, the RhB is almost completely degraded (degradation efficiency ≈90%) using S-doped ZnSnO3, which is much faster than using pure ZnSnO3 or other zinc–tin oxide-based photocatalysts. In this report, detailed discussions are also given for the synthesis process of hollow-structured ZnSnO3 and the mechanism of narrowing the band gap via S doping.

Solar photocatalysis is a promising, green, and sustainable technique for the synthesis of H 2 O 2 . In this study, low-dimensional ZnO/ZnIn 2 S 4 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are fabricated using electrostatic spinning and chemical bath deposition methods for the efficient photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 . ZnO nanofibers loaded with 20 wt% ZnIn 2 S 4 exhibit a superior H 2 O 2 production rate of 928 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is more than four times higher than that seen in pristine hexagonal phase ZnO and ZnIn 2 S 4 . First-principles calculations and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal the charge separation and transfer mechanisms in the S-scheme heterojunction. The construction of the S-scheme heterojunction facilitates the spatial separation of charge carriers, and electrons and holes with higher redox abilities are retained. Photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence tests further show that the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction is beneficial for the separation of photoinduced charge carriers. Electrochemical tests and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements indicate that H 2 O 2 production is primarily via a two-step single-electron O 2 reduction path. This study provides a new approach for the construction of S-scheme heterojunction materials that can efficiently produce H 2 O 2 under solar irradiation.

Metal-sulfur batteries have received great attention for electrochemical energy storage due to high theoretical capacity and low cost, but their further development is impeded by low sulfur utilization, poor electrochemical kinetics, and serious shuttle effect of the sulfur cathode. To avoid these problems, herein, a triple-synergistic small-molecule sulfur cathode is designed by employing N, S co-doped hierarchical porous bamboo charcoal as a sulfur host in an aqueous Cu-S battery. Expect the enhanced conductivity and chemisorption induced by N, S synergistic co-doping, the intrinsic synergy of macro-/meso-/microporous triple structure also ensures space-confined small-molecule sulfur as high utilization reactant and effectively alleviates the volume expansion during conversion reaction. Under a further joint synergy between hierarchical structure and heteroatom doping, the resulting sulfur cathode endows the Cu-S battery with outstanding electrochemical performance. Cycled at 5 A g−1, it can deliver a high reversible capacity of 2,509.8 mAh g−1 with a good capacity retention of 97.9% after 800 cycles. In addition, a flexible hybrid pouch cell built by a small-molecule sulfur cathode, Zn anode, and gel electrolytes can firmly deliver high average operating voltage of about 1.3 V with a reversible capacity of over 2,500 mAh g−1 under various destructive conditions, suggesting that the triple-synergistic small-molecule sulfur cathode promises energetic metal-sulfur batteries.

Sulfate radical (SO 4 •- )-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) show great potential in the elimination of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation . Tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) as an emerging contaminant can be effectively degraded in SR-AOPs. However, the present study found that SO 4 •- also reacted with ammonium (NH 4 + ), a ubiquitous inorganic nitrogen species in aquatic environments, thus markedly affected the rates and pathways of TBBPS degradation in SR-AOPs. TBBPS underwent β-scission and debromination upon SO 4 •- attack, leading to various transformation products . The released bromide (Br - ) underwent further oxidation by SO 4 •- to form free bromine which reacted with certain TBBPS intermediates, generating disinfection byproducts (DBPs). When NH 4 + was present in such system, the abatement of TBBPS was apparently suppressed. Meanwhile, NH 4 + was oxidized by SO 4 •- to nitrogen dioxide radical (NO 2 • ) which coupled with certain radical intermediates of TBBPS oxidation, yielding nitrophenolic products including 2,6-dibromo-4-nitrophenol (DBNP) and mono-nitro substituted TBBPS. When 10 μM TBBPS was treated by heat activated peroxydisulfate with 1 mM NH 4 + , the molar yield of DBNP reached 22% in 2 h. More importantly, NH 4 + scavenged the in situ formed free bromine to form monobromamine (NH 2 Br), decreasing regulated DBPs formation but leading to highly toxic dibromoacetonitrile (DBAN). This study broadens the understanding of interactions between the transformation of halogens and NH 4 + during SO 4 •- oxidation. It also reveals the potential environmental risks when SR-AOPs are employed for the organohalogen pollutants degradation in realistic environments where NH 4 + is present.

Graphical Interface construction through experimental control of the introduced anions allows the tuning of the energy bands of photoanode materials. The cooperative energy band and electronical structure of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 resulted in a photocurrent of 0.6 mA⋅cm −2 when exposed to light irradiation. This strategy has practical significance for developing low-cost, high-performance PEC sensors. In the past several decades, Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing still remains a great challenge to design highly-efficient semiconductor photocatalysts via a facile method. It is of much importance to design and synthesize various novel nanostructured sensing materials for further improving the response performance. Herein, we present an In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure obtained by combining microwave assisted hydrothermal method with S-induced phase change, whose energy band and electronic structure could be adjusted by changing the S content. Combining theoretical calculation and spectroscopic techniques, the introduction of sulfur was proved to produce multifunctional interfaces, inducing the change of phase, oxygen vacancies and band gap, which accelerates the separation of photoexcited carriers and reduces their recombination, improving the electronic injection efficiency around the interface of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 . As anticipated, an enhanced glucose response performance with a photocurrent of 0.6 mA cm −2 , a linear range of 0.1–1 mM and a detection limit as low as 14.5 μM has been achieved based on the In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure, which is significant superior over its pure In 2 O 3 and S-doped In 2 O 3 counterparts. This efficient interfacial strategy may open a new route to manipulate the electrical structure, and energy band structure regulation of sensing material to improve the performance of photoelectrodes for PEC.

This study aimed to regulate the band structure and enhance the reduction ability of CdS by substituting it with Mn 2+ . Subsequently, this nano MnCdS solid solution was anchored on the surface of truncated octahedral Cu 2 O through a simple hydrothermal process, forming an S-scheme heterojunction at the interface between MnCdS and Cu 2 O. Equilibrating the Fermi level at the MnCdS/Cu 2 O heterojunction led to spontaneous diffusion of electrons in MnCdS to Cu 2 O, generating an internal electric field that drove the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of Cu 2 O and holes in the valence band (VB) of MnCdS. Consequently, this process preserved the powerful photogenerated electrons in the CB of MnCdS, facilitating robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . The MnCdS/Cu 2 O exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 66.3 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 3.4- and 54.3-times higher than that of MnCdS (19.4 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and Cu 2 O (1.2 mmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. This study elucidates advanced S-scheme heterojunction catalyst architectures for photocatalytic hydrogen production.
