Synergistic design of 3D porous lithiophilic Cu-Sn alloy current collectors for high-rate and stable graphite anodes

Yixin Liu,Wenyu Dong,Tao Wang,Jianwei Zhao,Peng Li

Conventional planar copper (Cu) current collectors severely limit the rate capability and cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. To overcome this, we report a three-dimensional (3D) porous Cu-Sn alloy architecture fabricated via scalable, cyanide-free electrodeposition and chemical dealloying methods. Its core innovation lies in the synergistic benefits of the porous structure and Cu-Sn alloying: the interconnected pores facilitate rapid Li⁺ transport and buffer graphite's volume expansion, while the intrinsic lithiophilicity of Sn ensures a stable, low-impedance interface. Consequently, an anode using the optimized porous collector delivers a remarkable specific capacity of 120.3 mAh g⁻¹ at 5C, representing a nearly five-fold enhancement in high-rate capacity retention over conventional Cu foil. The collector also confers exceptional cycling stability, enabling a 57.2 % capacity increase over 200 cycles, in stark contrast to the decay observed with standard foil. Electrochemical analysis confirms that the porous design drastically reduces electrode impedance while maintaining structural integrity. This work validates that engineering the current collector architecture is a powerful and effective strategy for developing high-performance, fast-charging batteries.

Synthesis of three-dimensional Sn@Ti3C2 by layer-by-layer self-assembly for high-performance lithium-ion storage

Zhilei Wang,Jirong Bai,Haiyang Xu,Gang Chen,Shifei Kang,Xi Li

Powerful yet orderly nanostructure lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are eagerly desired to satisfy the practical application of portable electronics and smart grids. However, the surface re-stacking and surface functionalization on the MXenes in the anode electrode severely restrict the accessibility to electrolyte ions, hindering the full utilization of their intrinsic properties. To address this challenge, we rationally design three-dimensional (3D) Sn@Ti 3 C 2 materials and fabricate them in a unique layer-by-layer manner through self-assembly for boosting LIBs. In this design system for fast lithium-ion storage, the Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets serving as 3D scaffolds buffer the severe volume expansion and agglomeration of Sn nanoparticles (NPs) and enhance electrode conductivity at the interface. Furthermore, Sn NPs are embedded as interlayer spacers to prevent nanosheet re-stacking and provide outstanding electrochemical performance . The nanostructure can increase the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and create additional active sites. As a result, the Sn@Ti 3 C 2 anode exhibits a superior specific capacity up to 666 mA∙h∙g −1 at 0.5 A∙g −1 after 250 cycles. Compared with pure Sn NPs, the improved electrochemical performance of Sn@Ti 3 C 2 can be ascribed to the high electronic conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets . The 3D Sn@Ti 3 C 2 materials prepared in a layer-by-layer manner through self-assembly display promising performances for LIBs.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphors as crucial components of NIR light sources have multifunctional and smart spectroscopy applications, prompting an increasing research interest in developing efficient and stable NIR materials. Focusing on this issue, the present study explored the luminescent properties of Cr 3+ -doped Ca 3 ZnMGe 3 O 12 (M = Zr, Hf, Sn and Ti) garnet family. These materials exhibit an emission peak falls within the range of 785–805 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) varying from 114 to 123 nm. Among them, the Ca 3 ZnZrGe 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ phosphor shows the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY = 60.3 %) and an excellent thermal stability ( I 423K / I 298K  = 77.51 %). Moreover, the performance of a prototype Ca 3 ZnZrGe 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ -containing NIR pc-LED device was estimated, which achieves an NIR output of 23.46 mW and a photonic efficiency of 14.09 % under 100 mA driving current. Non-destructive examination can be realized using this light source, demonstrating the good potential of the material in NIR spectroscopy applications.

Facile Synthesis of MPS3/C (M = Ni and Sn) Hybrid Materials and Their Application in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xianyu Liu,Tayyaba Najam,Ghulam Yasin,Mohan Kumar,Miao Wang

Herein, we successfully synthesized two novel metal thiophosphites (MTPs) hybridized with carbon, that is, NiPS3/C and SnPS3/C composites, via an environment-friendly and cost-effective approach without harsh reaction conditions. Subsequently, the electrochemical performances of NiPS3/C and SnPS3/C composites have been investigated in coin-cells, and it is revealed that MTPs/C have a significantly higher Li-storage capacity and better stability compared to the MTPs without carbon. Moreover, the SnPS3/C electrode shows a lower internal resistance and a better rate performance compared to NiPS3/C. We employed extensive ex situ experiments to characterize the materials and interpreted the remarkably improved performance of MTPs/C.

Synthesis and Characterization of Sn/SnO2/C Nano-Composite Structure: High-Performance Negative Electrode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jaffer Saddique,Honglie Shen,Jiawei Ge,Xiaomin Huo,Nasir Rahman,Muhammad Mushtaq,Khaled Althubeiti,Hamza Al-Shehri

Tin oxide (SnO2) and tin-based composites along with carbon have attracted significant interest as negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, tin-based composite electrodes have some critical drawbacks, such as high volume expansion, low capacity at high current density due to low ionic conductivity, and poor cycle stability. Moreover, complex preparation methods and high-cost carbon coating procedures are considered main challenges in the commercialization of tin-based electrodes for LIBs. In this study, we prepared a Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite structure by employing a low-cost hydrothermal method, where Sn nanoparticles were oxidized in glucose and carboxymethyl cellulose CMC was introduced into the solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope revealed the irregular structure of Sn nanoparticles and SnO2phases in the conductive carbon matrix. The as-prepared Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite showed high first-cycle reversible discharge capacity (2248 mAhg−1) at 100 mAg−1with a first coulombic efficiency of 70%, and also displayed 474.64 mAhg−1at the relatively high current density of about 500 mAg−1after 100 cycles. A low-cost Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite with significant electrochemical performance could be the next generation of high-performance negative electrodes for LIBs.

Sn(II)-doped one-dimensional hybrid metal halide [C5H14NO]CdCl3 single crystals with broadband greenish-yellow light emission

Haiming Cheng,Chi Cao,Shiyong Teng,Zhinan Zhang,Ying Zhang,Dayang Wang,Wensheng Yang,Renguo Xie

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid halides, as an important branch of metal halide materials, have attracted much attention due to their excellent photoelectric properties. Herein, we designed one new hybrid cadmium chloride [C5H14NO]CdCl3 based on combinations of the d10 metal cation (Cd2+) and choline chloride molecules. [C5H14NO]CdCl3 single crystals belong to the orthorhombic Pna21 space group and show a one-dimensional (1D) structure with distorted [CdCl5O]5− octahedra. The second harmonic generation (SHG) response of [C5H14NO]CdCl3 exhibits an intensity of approximately 0.4 × KDP. Moreover, the photoluminescence properties of the [C5H14NO]CdCl3 crystal are activated by doping with Sn2+ ions having stereochemically active lone pair 5s2 electrons. Under UV excitation conditions, bright greenish-yellow light emission can be observed, and the quantum efficiency (PLQY) is as high as 91.27%. The luminescence mechanism is revealed by combining the results of temperature dependent luminescence and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This work can serve as a guide for the design and synthesis of emerging optical materials.

Yang Zhen-xing,Shang Jie,Yan Guang-xu,Wang Yu-xian,Guo Shao-hui

In this paper, Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was prepared by thermal oxidation method, and the effects of doping amount of Pd-Sn and synthesis conditions on Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode performance were studied. Linear sweep voltammetry(LSV), cyclic voltammetry(CV), and the Tafel curve were used to study the electrochemical performance of the Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode materials. The effects of the doping amount of Pd-Sn on the microstructure and valence states of Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode materials were investigated by SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS. When the mass of Pd-Sn accounted for 1.5% of the total mass of the elements, the molar ratio of Ru-Ir was 2:1, and the molar ratio of Pd-Sn was 3:1; the LSV, CV, and the Tafel curves indicated that Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode had the lowest chlorine evolution potential (1.0640 V vs. SCE), the best CV curve coincidence, and the smallest corrosion current density (6.5 × 10 −4 A/cm 2 ), showing the best chlorine evolution performance, the best durability, and corrosion resistance; the characterization of SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS showed that Pd-Sn was successfully doped into Ru-Ir electrode materials; the crystallinity of Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was the highest, and the binding energy was the lowest, but the crystal form of Ru-Ir solid solution did not have changed. The optimal synthesis conditions of Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode material were as follows: Pd-Sn molar ratio was 3:1, calcination temperature was 500 ℃, calcination time was 4 h, and water was used as solvent. Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode can efficiently treat high chlorine ammonia–nitrogen wastewater, when the reaction volume was 200 mL, the initial concentration of NH 3 -N was 100 mg/L, the concentration of chloride ion was 5000 mg/L, the current was 0.75 A, and the reaction time was 40 min; the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen can reach 100%. Tin–chromium bimetallic metal–organic framework MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) as a catalyst for glucose conversion into HMF

Jiawen Hao,Wei Mao,Guirong Ye,Yi Xia,Cui Wei,Ling Zeng,Jinghong Zhou

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered a promising platform chemical, from which numerous chemicals can be produced. Hence, developing an efficient catalytic system to convert glucose into HMF has drawn considerable attention. In this study, a series of Lewis acidic Sn–Cr bimetallic metal–organic frameworks, MIL-101(Cr, Sn), with different Sn ion loading were synthesized hydrothermally using acetic acid as the mineralizer and water as the solvent. The resulting MIL-101(Cr, Sn) was systematically analyzed as a catalyst for the conversion of sugar to HMF. Moreover, the effects exerted by various reaction parameters on HMF yield and selectivity were investigated. With glucose as the substrate and 0.5-wt% H 2 SO 4 as a catalyst, an 85.75% glucose conversion with 22.64% HMF yield and 26.41% selectivity was achieved. Meanwhile, these parameters were improved via addition of MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1. That is, glucose conversion, HMF yield, and selectivity were increased to 86.36%, 60.75%, and 70.35%, respectively, when using MIL-101(Cr, Sn)-0.1 and H 2 SO 4 as the catalyst under the same reaction conditions. The MIL-101(Cr, Sn) structure enabled high stability of the catalyst in aqueous solutions with different pH values, while improving its thermal stability. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused several times despite a slight reduction in its catalytic activity . The current results illustrate that MIL-101(Cr, Sn) is an excellent acid and sustainable catalyst for the production of HMF from fructose, glucose, and starch .

Ziqi Wang,Kai Bo,Yong Wang,Yongzhen Wang

The development of ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) catalysts with high performance is an emerging need of direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). Rational design of support materials of platinum-based catalyst can significantly enhance its catalytic performance for EOR. Here, the highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon material (NC-E) from ZIF-8 was synthesized using a novel and simple method assisted by eutectic salts. Compared with the carbon material obtained from ZIF-8 by traditional calcination (NC-T) and carbon black, the NC-E with high surface area and hierarchical pore structure supported Pt–Sn catalyst exhibits improved electrochemical activity and stability.

Effects of Sn-containing intermetallic compounds on the thermal decomposition and ignition properties of RDX and TKX-50

Yong Chen,Ming Zhang,Hui Li,Zhao Qin,Fengqi Zhao,Heng Li,Kangzhen Xu

In order to develop efficient combustion catalysts for solid propellants , three intermetallic compounds of Sn-Cu, Sn-Co and Sn-Ni were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and their effects on the thermal decomposition and ignition properties of 1,3,5-trinitroperhy-dro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) were studied systemically. The results show that Sn-Cu, Sn-Co and Sn-Ni can all promote the thermal decomposition of RDX, which reduce the exothermic decomposition peak temperature of RDX by 3.2, 1.9 and 4.8 ℃, respectively. And the apparent activation energy of RDX was reduced by 82.1 kJ·mol −1 after adding the Sn-Ni intermetallic compound. In comparison with RDX, the exothermic peak temperature of TKX-50 was reduced more significantly, which was decreased by 11.9, 1.5 and 6.6 ℃ in the existence of Sn-Cu, Sn-Co and Sn-Ni, respectively. Additionally, Sn-containing intermetallic compound could reduce the ignition delay time of RDX under high power laser density, while the ignition delay time of TKX-50 could be decreased in the full power density range of the experiment. Besides, the flame combustion intensity and propagation rate of RDX and TKX-50 were significantly heightened by adding the three compounds. The comparison of pyrolysis and ignition performance before and after adding Sn-containing intermetallic compound into RDX and TKX-50 shows that Sn-containing intermetallic compound has great application prospects for improving the heat release and combustion characteristic of solid propellants.

Potentiostatic electrodeposited of Ni–Fe–Sn on Ni foam served as an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Yihui Wu,Yuan Zhang,Yuxin Wang,Zhen He,Zhengjian Gu,Shuochao You

Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalyst supported on nickel foam (Ni–Fe–Sn/NF) with high efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been successfully fabricated through one-step potentiostatic electrodeposition route. The optimized Ni–Fe–Sn/NF displayed an extremely low overpotential of, respectively, 144 and 180 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 for HER in alkaline condition. Moreover, it could retain its superior stability for at least 12 h. The remarkable electrocatalytic activity of our electrocatalyst is ascribed to the high conductivity originated from synergistic effects between Ni, Fe, and Sn during HER process.

Coupled Sn/Mo2C nanoparticles wrapped in carbon nanofibers by electrospinning as high-performance electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Lun Zhang,Kuo Wei,Jinming Ma,Jing Wang,Zhiwei Liu,Ruirui Xing,Tifeng Jiao

Constructing bimetallic carbon-based electrocatalysts of rational geometric structures has been an efficient method to improve the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The reasonably designed bimetallic carbon-based electrocatalysts have low-cost and high electrocatalytic efficiency, which are promising to replace the platinum catalysts. Herein, the Sn/Mo 2 C composite nanoparticles were encapsulated in carbon nanofibers of a 2D structure (Sn/Mo 2 C-CNFs) have been successfully fabricated by a simple electrospinning and carbonization process. As a result, after turned the ratio of Sn and Mo 2 C into 1:3, the Sn/Mo 2 C-CNFs showed a superior HER performance with an overpotential of 144 mV in the current density of 10 mA⋅cm −2 in alkaline medium, the Tafel slope of 49.8 mV⋅dec -1 , and operated stably for 60 h and 5000 circles. These excellent properties were mainly attributed to the special nanofiber structure and the synergism of Sn and Mo 2 C that enhanced the active sites and weakened the binding force of H proton and Mo 2 C. The present work provides an uncomplicated, efficient, and low-cost train of thought for resolving the problem of replacing the Pt-based catalysts with bimetallic materials.
