This work presented a new method for preparing cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/Fe 3 O 4 @rGO composite aerogels with enhanced magnetic and mechanical properties. The composite aerogels were obtained through compounding, gelling, washing, tert -butanol replacing, and freeze-drying. The structural characteristics of composite aerogels were investigated via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray diffraction. Results showed that the composite aerogels had interconnected three-dimensional porous network microstructures, and the Fe 3 O 4 @rGO hybrids were uniformly dispersed in the aerogels. Moreover, the aerogels' magnetization and compression characteristics were also studied. Magnetic measurements indicated that composite aerogels had good magnetization characteristics with the saturation magnetization value of 6.75 emu/g. The uniaxial compression tests showed that the compression strength and Young's modulus of the composite aerogels were significantly improved by 32.33 and 118.56%, respectively, relative to those of CNF aerogels. The perfect combination of structure and performance may render the composite aerogels useful for commercial applications in the fields of environmental engineering, biomedical engineering, electronics, and energy. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In recent decades, increased industrial activities have led to the release of various pollutants, such as toxic heavy metals, inorganic anions, and organics. It is imperative but challenging to develop an eco-friendly treatment technology with easy operation, low cost, and high efficiency. Here, we describe a design of magnetic purifier, which has biomass-based structure by blending attapulgite/chitosan (ATP/CS) composite with bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNs). Compared to similar materials reported previously, our product exhibited efficient adsorption capacities towards various metal ions including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cr 6+ , and anionic organic dyes including Congo red. The adsorption process could be well fitted by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order equation. Additionally, the adsorption capacity only decreased less than 8% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. We expect our design will inspire more efforts to build a multifunctional water purifier with simple operation, and hopefully effectively remove pollutants from wastewater in future practical applications.

The complex aerogel generated from nano-polysaccharides, chitin nanocrystals (ChiNC) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF), and its derivative cationic guar gum (CGG) is successfully prepared via a facile freeze-drying method with glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross-linkers. The complexation of ChiNC, TCNF, and CGG is shown to be helpful in creating a porous structure in the three-dimensional aerogel, which creates within the aerogel with large pore volume and excellent compressive properties. The ChiNC/TCNF/CGG aerogel is then modified with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) to obtain superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity and used for oil–water separation. The successful modification is demonstrated through FTIR, XPS, and surface wettability studies. A water contact angle of 155° on the aerogel surface and 150° on the surface of the inside part of aerogel are obtained for the MTCS-modified ChiNC/TCNF/CGG aerogel, resulting in its effective absorption of corn oil and organic solvents (toluene, n-hexane, and trichloromethane) from both beneath and at the surface of water with excellent absorption capacity (i.e., 21.9 g/g for trichloromethane). More importantly, the modified aerogel can be used to continuously separate oil from water with the assistance of a vacuum setup and maintains a high absorption capacity after being used for 10 cycles. The as-prepared superhydrophobic/superoleophilic ChiNC/TCNF/CGG aerogel can be used as a promising absorbent material for the removal of oil from aqueous media. Keywords:cellulose nanofiber;chitin nanocrystals;cationic guar gum;aerogel;oil absorption

An environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane based on castor oil was prepared and modified by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose microfibers (TOCMF). The TOCMF with surface-attached active carboxyl groups was obtained by TEMPO/NaClO/NaBr system, and then the modified castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane was prepared by the synergistic action of covalent bond and hydrogen bond between TOCMF and prepolymer in the in-situ polymerization reaction . The introduction of carboxylate on the surface of TOCMF facilitated stabilization of the thickness of the double layer of the emulsion particles to form stable WPU/TOCMF dispersions. Benefiting from the filamentous structural effects of TOCMF and the covalent bond and hydrogen bond dual interactions in WPU matrix, WPU/TOCMF composite films showed improvement in tensile strength and thermal decomposition temperature . Tensile strength of composite films increased from 17.89 to 30.31 MPa with increasing TOCMF amount from 0 to 1.00 wt%. T 5% of composite films increased from 202.6 to 239.3 °C with increasing TOCMF amount from 0 to 0.75 wt%. It was observed by SEM that the presence of agglomeration in the composite film with 1.25 and 1.50 wt% TOCMF, and the occurrence of agglomeration caused the performance of the composite film to deteriorate sharply.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with excellent biodegradability are promising biomaterials for use as responsive Pickering emulsifiers. However, the high hydrophilicity of CNCs limits their emulsification ability. Some existing studies have utilized complicated covalent modification procedures to increase the hydrophobicity of CNCs. To simplify the modification process, we prepared hydrophobically modified CNCs (CNCs-M2005) via simple and controllable electrostatic interactions with thermosensitive M2005. The obtained CNCs-M2005 exhibited temperature and CO2 dual-responsive properties. Subsequently, stable oil/water Pickering emulsions were prepared using the partially hydrophobic CNCs-M2005 at 20 °C. However, demulsification occurred when the temperature increased to 60 °C. This temperature-induced demulsification resulted from the dehydration of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide, causing the aggregation of the CNCs-M2005, as shown by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments. In addition, demulsification was also achieved after bubbling CO2, which was attributed to the dissociation of the partially hydrophobic CNCs-M2005. The temperature and CO2 dual-responsive biosafe Pickering emulsions open up opportunity for the design of intelligent food, cosmetic, and drug delivery systems.

A portable, sensitive, rapid, specific, and environment-friendly polyvinyl alcohol–borax (PB) hydrogel fluorescence probe was synthesized for the sequential sensing of Cu 2+ and oxytetracycline (OTC) in wastewater. The aminated 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinooxy-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/europium complexes/carbon dot (ATOCN/Eu(DPA) 3 /CD) complex was added to the PB matrix. With the assistance of ATOCNs, the in-situ polymerized ATOCN/Eu(DPA) 3 /CD complexes were well-dispersed in the hydrogel and enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The prepared hydrogel could be converted from solid to liquid by adjusting the water content to reduce the deviations caused by the solid probe detection. The probe not only induced evident fluorescence quenching and instantaneous response to Cu 2+ at 430 nm and OTC at 617 nm but also exhibited a high selectivity to Cu 2+ and OTC. The detection limits for Cu 2+ and OTC were 0.031 and 0.019 mg L −1 , respectively. Fluorescence recover was achieved by adding S 2− for CuS precipitate formation and for the thermal decomposition of OTC. After repeatedly recovering the fluorescence for 10 times, the fluorescence intensity at 430 nm was restored to 79% of the original intensity and that at 617 nm was stored to 95%. The results show that hydrogels have remarkable potential applicability in detecting Cu 2+ and OTC in wastewater.

Rational design and synthesis of highly efficient and robust photocatalysts with positive exciton splitting and interfacial charge transfer for environmental applications is critical. Herein, aiming at overcoming the common shortcomings of traditional photocatalysts such as weak photoresponsivity, rapid combination of photo-generated carriers and unstable structure, a novel Ag-bridged dual Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/AgI plasmonic heterojunction was successfully synthesized using a facile method. Results showed that Ag-AgI nanoparticles and three-dimensional (3D) BiOI microspheres were decorated highly uniformly on the 3D porous g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet, resulting in a higher specific surface area and abundant active sites. The optimized 3D porous dual Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI manifested exceptional photocatalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in water with approximately 91.8% degradation efficiency within 165 min, outperforming majority of the reported g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts. Moreover, g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI exhibited good stability in terms of activity and structure. In-depth radical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses confirmed the relative contributions of various scavengers. Mechanism analysis indicated that the improved photocatalytic performance and stability were ascribed to the highly ordered 3D porous framework, fast electron transfer of dual Z-scheme heterojunction, desirable photocatalytic performance of BiOI/AgI and synergistic effect of Ag plasmas. Therefore, the 3D porous Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI heterojunction had a good prospect for applications in water remediation. The current work provides new insight and useful guidance for designing novel structural photocatalysts for environment-related applications.

Nonmetal doping is widely used in the modification of titanium dioxides (TiO 2 ) for photocatalytic applications. As a typical two-dimensional layered nanomaterial, the excellent physical and chemical properties of MXene materials have been the focus of current research. In this study, carbon and fluorine co-doped MXene derived TiO 2 nanosheets (labelled as C-F-TiO 2 ) were successfully synthesized and used as catalysts for degrading 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) under UV light irradiation. The C-F-TiO 2 with ultrathin nanosheet structure enhanced light absorption range and decreased the bandgaps. The degradation efficiency of 2,4,6-TCP by C-F-TiO 2 was over 99 % in 90 min, and the degradation rate was more than twice that of commercial TiO 2 . The degradation rate still remained about 90 % in 90 min after five cycles. The results of quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) illustrated that more reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated in the C-F-TiO 2 /UV system, which was 1.5 times that of commercial pure TiO 2 , and • O 2 – was the dominant ROS for 2,4,6-TCP degradation. This study provided insight to utilize physicochemical characteristics of MXene to synthesize non-metal co-doped TiO 2 nanosheet as a catalyst, exhibiting excellent reactivity in the potential application for organic pollutant degradation.

Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is an effective environment purification strategy. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis owing to their structural diversity, uniform cavity, and large specific surface area. However, poor electrical conductivity, light absorption, and water stability restrict their development. The tailorable structure of MOFs may effectively overcome these limitations. Herein, three Cu-based MOFs (complexes 1–3) with one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) structures, respectively, were successfully prepared by introducing different uncoordinated ligands and adjusting the ligand/metal salt ratio. Among them, complex 1 with a 1D chain was constructed as a typical J-type aggregation by π–π stacking interactions between adjacent naphthalene rings. This intermolecular aggregation mode enhances strong exciton coupling between conjugated rings, reduces the transition energy, expands the intrinsic light absorption edge, and provides a channel for electron transport, thus improving the charge-separation efficiency. As expected, complex 1 with a 1D chain structure exhibited excellent Fenton-like catalytic activity. The apparent reaction rates were 3.2 and 2.0 times higher than those of 2D and 3D MOFs, respectively.

Non-contact sensors, intelligent electronics that interact with surrounding information with no physical contact, are highly desirable for human-machine interaction. Due to the increased sensing distance and expanded operation scope, it is anticipated the non-contact device exhibiting enhanced electrical output and detection range. Here, freeze-drying assisted 3D printing approach is employed to fabricate cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/MXene-based deep-trap hierarchical architecture for non-contact triboelectric nanogenerators, which exhibit excellent sensing performance for multi-direction motion monitoring. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between CNF and MXene nanosheets facilitates the formation of a well-dispersed ink with suitable viscoelasticity for 3D printing. The incorporation of MXene nanosheets provides the printed scaffold with more open pores for increased charge generation. Meanwhile, the high electron trapping capability of MXene leads to a weakened electron escaping tendency and an increased decay time, which are beneficial for the device’s non-contact voltage output. Based on the as-prepared non-contact sensor, an all-printed sensing array and a 3D sensor are demonstrated for multi-site and multi-dimension motion trajectories monitoring, indicating its great potential in healthcare, safe navigation, and artificial intelligence.

Biochar contains environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), a class of pollutants whose regulation and influencing factors need to be studied. In this study, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals were observed for biochar samples obtained by the pyrolysis of wheat straw, corn straw, peanut shell, and cotton stalk. The effects of pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and alkali/alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) on EPFRs in biochar were investigated. The adsorption effect of diethyl phthalate (DEP) on biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of wheat straw impregnated with K, Na, Ca, and Mg was also studied. The concentration of EPFRs increased first and then decreased upon increasing the pyrolysis temperature within the rage of 300–700 ℃, conforming to a Gaussian fit. Residence time experiments showed that the concentration of EPFRs was the highest at a residence time of 10 min. The effect of AAEMs on the EPFRs concentration followed the order Mg > K > Ca > Na due to the catalysis of a secondary reaction. Because of hole-filling and electrostatic attraction, biochar obtained by pyrolysis of wheat straw impregnated with MgCl 2 (WS Mg ) had the highest DEP removal rate of 95.969%. DEP removal efficiency of the five adsorbents followed the order WS Mg > WS Ca (88.701%) > WS (68.867%) > WS Na (53.852%) > WS K (50.845%). Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) signals were detected in these five adsorption systems, showing that EPFRs could activated H 2 O 2 to produce •OH. However, the five •OH signals had similar intensities, indicating that AAEMs had not significantly effects on the process of activation of H 2 O 2 to produce •OH by EPFRs. The results of this study are of great significance for understanding the formation and regulation of EPFRs and the utilization of biochar.

Integrates ZIF-8/H-MPB heterostructures into smart polysaccharide sprayable matrices • Engineers metabolic redox-responsive Prussian blue reduction for visual monitoring • Drives augmented photon harvesting via heterojunctions for synergistic ROS bursts • Switches nanozyme activity autonomously after light-off to resolve oxidative stress • Couples matrix degradation with synchronized Zn 2+ release to guide tissue repair Chronic infected wounds remain a clinical challenge due to a vicious cycle of bacterial load, persistent inflammation, and oxidative stress that hinders tissue regeneration. Herein, we report BC-CS@ZHP, a theranostic sprayable composite wound interface material designed for this spatiotemporally dynamic pathology. The material comprises an oxidized bacterial cellulose/chitosan matrix and a visible-light-switchable bidirectional nanozyme (ZHP) core, enabling conformal in situ film formation on irregular wounds. ZHP, consisting of ZIF-8 and hollow mesoporous Prussian blue (H-MPB). Under simulated visible light, ZHP generates antimicrobial reactive oxygen species (ROS) via ZIF-8 mediation. Upon turning off the light, the H-MPB core acts as an ROS-scavenging nanozyme, relieving oxidative stress and polarizing macrophages toward a reparative phenotype. Concurrently, sustained Zn 2+ release promotes fibroblast migration, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. Furthermore, as Prussian blue (PB) electronically reduce to Prussian white (PW), the material provides visual colorimetric monitoring of bacterial load, guiding dressing replacement. In a Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus )-infected wound model, BC-CS@ZHP efficiently controlled infection, normalized the immune microenvironment, and accelerated vascularized tissue regeneration with negligible systemic toxicity. This study establishes a diagnosis-clearance-reprogramming-regeneration strategy for infected wound management, providing a versatile guideline for designing stage-adaptive biomaterials. A visible-light-Switchable bidirectional nanozyme (ZHP) embedded in a sprayable TO-BC/chitosan film enables an “antibacterial-to-regenerative” cascade: light-on generates ROS to kill bacteria, while light-off scavenges ROS, polarizes macrophages to M2, and releases Zn 2+ to promote angiogenesis, accelerating infected wound healing.
