Since the original discovery, MXene can be synthesized by wet-chemical etching from the MAX phase. To avoid the shortcomings of the previous etchant, NaHF2 aqueous solution was used for the selective removal of Al from Ti3AlC2, while intercalating Na+ between layers. The d-spacing of the resulting accordion-like Ti3C2Tx is up to 12.35 Å; the by-product Na3AlF6 can be removed by H2SO4, and the product yield can reach about 85%. After a short time of centrifugation and sonication, few-layer (10–20 layers) Ti3C2Tx sheets in a large lateral size (3–4 μm) can be prepared, with high conductivity up to 2.3 × 105 S m−1. Ti3C2Tx can be stably dispersed in water and organic solvents for at least 96 h, and has excellent anti-thermal-oxidation ability. As the anode for sodium ion batteries, the Ti3C2Tx electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 70 mA h g−1 after 900 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1 with an extremely low-capacity decay rate. From 900 to 1000 cycles, the capacity can even be increased to 130 mA h g−1, and the Coulomb efficiency is close to 100%, showing that MXene can provide a stable structure for the Na+ cycle.

The emerging two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) have been gradually coming into the limelight due to excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity performance and versatile surface chemistry. However, the oxidation instability and poor processability of MXenes impede further scalable applications. Toward this end, we have for the first time proposed a general and facile strategy to transform Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into a novel class of homogenous, stable solvent-free liquids (MX-fluid) with core-corona-canopy structure via covalent linkage surface engineering strategy. The as-prepared MX-liquid exhibited rather stable antioxidant ability after setting for 540 days. Moreover, the MX-fluid presented macroscopic flow behaviors at room temperature, remarkably improving processability and showing extensive potential in addressing the daunting dispersion issue when blending the Ti 3 C 2 T x with other polymer matrixes. Furthermore, the generality of constructing solvent-free MXene fluids using covalent corona-canopy linkage strategy was verified. As two proof-of-concept demonstrations, the MX-fluid was first utilized as a filler phase of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The MX-fluid exhibited greatly enhanced CO 2 uptake compared with that of N 2 , which was also confirmed by molecular simulation. Next, the MX-fluid was incorporated into Pebax-1657 matrix, and improved CO 2 selective separation (CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 69.2) was obtained, where the CO 2 permeability increased by 179.9% compared with pristine Pebax-1657 membrane. Second, the MX-fluid was demonstrated a good reinforcement phase of epoxy-based composites. Remarkably, the rich library of MXenes family and oligomer species provides more convenience for the further optimization of structures of solvent-free MXene liquids for task-specific applications, thus paving new ways to advance the development of novel solvent-free MXene liquids into scale-up and practical applications

Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent stability against humidity; however, some imperfectness of 2D perovskites, such as poor crystallinity, disordered orientation, and inferior charge transport still limit the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2D PSCs. In this work, 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets with high electrical conductivity and mobility were employed as a nanosized additive to prepare 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite films. The PCE of solar cells was increased from 13.69 (without additive) to 15.71% after incorporating the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with an optimized concentration. This improved performance is attributed to the enhanced crystallinity, orientation, and passivated trap states in the 3D phase that result in accelerated charge transfer process in vertical direction. More importantly, the unencapsulated cells exhibited excellent stability under ambient conditions with 55 ± 5% relative humidity.

Hierarchical composites with good electrical conductivity and sufficient voids are in great demand for the high-performance storage of sodium ions but typically limited due to the complicated synthesis procedure. Here, we report on a facile wet-chemistry synthesis of Sb 2 S 3 nanoparticles onto highly crumpled Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, which form three-dimensional (3D) architecture with good electrical conductivity. The homogeneously distributed Sb 2 S 3 nanoparticles suppress the restacking issue of the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, which creates rich voids for rapid electron/Na + transport and minimizes the volume expansion effect from Sb 2 S 3 upon repeated charging/discharging cycles. When used as a sodium-ion battery (SIB) anode, the composite shows a high capacity (329 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles) and good rate capability and cycling performance (215 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 and maintains 118 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles). We believe the metallic interconnected network and the 3D architecture synergistically result in a promoted sodium-ion storage performance. This work provides a simple strategy to construct MXene-based hybrids with a porous network structure for application fields, such as energy storage, photocatalysis, adsorption, and microwave absorption.

Designing antimicrobials with high efficiency and long-term antibacterial activity is an imperative issue. We found that the antimicrobial effect of Ti3C2Tx and Ag/Ti3C2Tx could be significantly strengthened upon near-infrared light exposure. The synergistic antibacterial mode of the photothermal bactericidal effect and intrinsic bacterial activity have been revealed, which confirms that the Ti3C2Tx MXene is an excellent near-infrared light-mediated nanoplatform for antibacterial applications. To further test the antibacterial effect in practical applications, Ag/Ti3C2Tx embedded hydrogels were used as wound dressings in a wound model experiment. They exhibit outstanding bacterial inhibition and wound healing performance with near-infrared light exposure. This work inspires us to explore the MXene-based photothermal platform in terms of antibacterial application.

Effective utilization of abundant solar energy for desalination of seawater and purification of wastewater is one of sustainable techniques for production of clean water, helping relieve global water resource shortage. Herein, we fabricate a vertically aligned reduced graphene oxide/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (A-RGO/MX) hybrid hydrogel with aligned channels as an independent solar steam generation device for highly efficient solar steam generation. The vertically aligned channels, generated by a liquid nitrogen-assisted directional-freezing process, not only rapidly transport water upward to the evaporation surface for efficient solar steam generation, but also facilitate multiple reflections of solar light inside the channels for efficient solar light absorption. The deliberate slight reduction endows the RGO with plenty of polar groups, decreasing the water vaporization enthalpy effectively and hence accelerating water evaporation efficiently. The MXene sheets, infiltrated inside the A-RGO hydrogel on the basis of Marangoni effect, enhance light absorption capacity and photothermal conversion performance. As a result, the A-RGO/MX hybrid hydrogel achieves a water evaporation rate of 2.09 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with a high conversion efficiency of 93.5% under 1-sun irradiation. Additionally, this photothermal conversion hydrogel rapidly desalinates seawater and purifies wastewater to generate clean water with outstanding ion rejection rates of above 99% for most ions.

Luminescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) are chosen to functionalize Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene flakes to form a new kind of nanohybrid. It was applied to the determination of glutathione (GSH) via photoluminescence (PL). The Cu NCs and MXene flakes are in close contact, and the blue PL of the Cu NCs (with excitation/emission peaks at 380/425 nm) is quenched. The addition of GSH triggers the separation of the nanohybrid. This results in the recovery of PL. GSH also promotes the PL of Cu NCs via host-guest interactions. Thus, target recognition, corresponding signal output and further magnification are accomplished in a single step. Under optimum conditions, the nanohybrid can detect GSH in the 5.0 to 100 μM concentration range and with a 3.0 μM detection limit. The assay is very specific and shows high selectivity towards metal ions, small biomolecules, amino acids, and thiol containing molecules.

MXenes are a novel type of two-dimensional (2D) materials that could be obtained from etching of Al atoms in layered hexagonal ternary carbide. These 2D materials display many outstanding physicochemical properties and are potentially utilized for various applications. Although previous reports demonstrated that MXenes and MXenes-based composites could be potentially utilized for environmental applications, the adsorption performance is limited and development of facile methods for synthesis MXenes-based composites with higher adsorption capability is of great importance. In this work, we reported for the first time that MXenes-based polymeric composites (Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA) could be simply fabricated via mixing of MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T X ) and levodopa (DOPA) under rather mild reaction conditions. In this reaction system, DOPA could adhere on the surface of MXenes through self-polymerization and many carboxyl groups could thus introduce during the polymerization procedure to form poly (DOPA). The resultant Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA composites were utilized as adsorbents and showed higher adsorption capacity in removal heavy metal ions as compared with that of raw Ti 3 C 2 T X . More importantly, Ti 3 C 2 T X -PDOPA composites could be further functionalized with other functional materials through subsequent reaction because many reactive functional groups were introduced on MXenes and various MXenes-based composites could be fabricated.

Proteins existed in aquatic environments strongly influence the transport, fate of nanomaterials due to the formation of protein-corona surrounding nanomaterials. To date, how do proteins affect the aggregation behaviors of MXene, a new family of two-dimensional materials, in aquatic environment remains unknown. Here the aggregation kinetics of MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets in various electrolytes (NaCl, CaCl 2 and Na 2 SO 4 ) was investigated by time-resolved dynamic light scattering in absence or presence of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Results showed that BSA affected the aggregation of Ti 3 C 2 T x in a concentration-dependent manner. Addition of 3 mg/L BSA decreased the critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of Ti 3 C 2 T x about 1.6–2.1 times, showing obvious destabilization effect; while BSA greater than 30 mg/L created a high-protein environment covering Ti 3 C 2 T x , producing high spatial repulsion and enhancing the dispersibility of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Ca 2+ ions have greater effect on the aggregation of Ti 3 C 2 T x due to the larger surface charge and bridging effect. The interaction between Ti 3 C 2 T x and BSA followed Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, and mainly attributed to hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces , while positively charged lysine and arginine in BSA might attract onto Ti 3 C 2 T x through electrostatic attraction. The interaction decreased the content of α -helix structure in BSA from 74.7% to 53.1%. Ti 3 C 2 T x easily suffered from aggregation and their long-distance transport seemed impossible in synthetic or natural waters. The present findings provided new insights for understanding the transfer and fate of this nanomaterial in aquatic environments.

Loading a co-catalyst is an effective approach for enhancing the performance of photocatalysts . In this study, we used a novel co-catalyst, Ti 3 C 2 T x , to fabricate an efficient and cost-effective heterogeneous nanostructured catalyst based on CdS for photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. The composite catalyst denoted as Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS-x was synthesized through via hydrothermal treatment . The heterostructure of Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS enabled the efficient separation and transfer of space charges during photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . With the aid of the l -cysteine, Ti 3 C 2 T x and CdS form a unique covalently bonded structure that generates numerous heterojunctions and reactive sites for hydrogen production . The results indicated that Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS-2 exhibits superior performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production , with a hydrogen evolution rate of 4275 μmol g −1 achieved in 2 h. This rate is 9.2 times higher than that obtained using pristine CdS as the catalyst.

The commercial application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has faced obstacles, including challenges related to low sulfur utilization, structural degradation resulting from electrode volume expansion, and migration of polysulfide lithium (LiPSs). Herein, Co1–xS/3D-Ti3C2Tx composites with three-dimensional (3D) multilayered structures are used as separator modification materials for Li–S batteries to solve these problems. The multilevel layered structure of Co1–xS/3D-Ti3C2Tx establishes an efficient electron and Li+ transfer path, alleviates the volume change during the battery charge–discharge process, and enhances the stability of the structure. In addition, the battery assembled with the modified separator shows excellent discharge capacity and cycle stability at 0.5 C and could maintain a high discharge capacity after 500 cycles. This work provides a method for designing highly dispersed metal sulfide nanoparticles on MXenes and extends the application of MXenes-based composites in electrochemical energy storage.

All-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) with high power density is urgent in energy storage area. This study investigated the impact of Ti 3 C 2 T X /Bi as catalyst on VRFB performance at high current density . The Ti 3 C 2 T X /Bi decorated electrode was prepared based on a facile dropping method. Owing to the synergistic effect between Bi and Ti 3 C 2 T X , the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is effectively inhibited and the electrochemical activity towards V 2+ /V 3+ redox reaction is enhanced. With the current densities ranging from 100 mA·cm −2 to 220 mA·cm −2 , VRFB equipped with Ti 3 C 2 T X /Bi modified graphite felt shows the best rate performance. Furthermore, at a current density of 200 mA·cm −2 , the battery with Bi and Ti 3 C 2 T X modified electrode shows the highest capacity retention rate of 70.3 % after 100 charge-discharge cycles and the highest energy efficiency (EE) of 80.1 %.
