A scalable formation of nano-SnO2 anode derived from tin metal–organic frameworks for lithium-ion battery

Zixu Sun,Can Cao,Wei-Qiang Han

In this work, for the first time, we synthesize a SnO2 nanomaterial through the calcination of tin metal–organic framework (MOF) precursors. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area are used to characterize the phases and to observe surface morphologies. This anode material exhibits good electrochemical performance in LIBs with high reversible capacity and cycling stability. The good electrochemical properties could be ascribed to the short transport/diffusion path of electrons and lithium ions and the high contact area between the electrode and electrolyte that results from the nanostructured SnO2. This is low-cost, facile and scalable for mass production of SnO2 nanocomposites as a potential anode material for the next-generation LIBs.

119Sn Mössbauer and Ferromagnetic Studies on Hierarchical Tin- and Nitrogen-Codoped TiO2 Microspheres with Efficient Photocatalytic Performance

Ganeshraja Ayyakannu Sundaram,Minghui Yang,Kiyoshi Nomura,Suresh Maniarasu,Ganapathy Veerappan,Tao Liu,Junhu Wang

Hierarchical tin-doped titania (ST) and tin- and nitrogen-codoped titania (SNT) microspheres were prepared by a hydrothermal method and nitriding treatment, in particular, SNT-enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution and room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). We initiated the photovoltaic study of ST and SNT microspheres to confirm the photovoltaic properties of perovskite solar cell (PSC) applications. The SNT microspheres exhibited relatively large saturation magnetization and high photocatalytic activity. To clarify the enhancement of the photoactivity, the prepared samples were characterized by 119Sn Mössbauer spectrometry under external magnetic fields. The broadened peaks of ST and SNT microspheres were decomposed into a doublet and a sextet under an external magnetic field because the samples showed weak ferromagnetism, although these samples are composed of nonmagnetic components. It is noteworthy that ST and SNT microspheres exhibits oxygen vacancies and defect-induced magnetism. The results signify the clear details of the RTFM and the photocatalytic activity of hierarchical ST and SNT microspheres.

TiO2-based photocatalysts prepared by oxidation of TiN nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activities under visible light illumination

Chao Li,Weiyi Yang,Qi Li

To develop TiO 2 -based photocatalysts with visible light activity for better solar energy utilization, a simple flash oxidation method was developed by calcining commercial TiN nanoparticle to prepare N-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst and TiN/TiO 2 composite photocatalysts through the modulation of the calcination time and temperature. It was found that more energy and processing time were needed to prepare N-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst than that of TiN/TiO 2 composite photocatalyst during this process, while TiN/TiO 2 composite photocatalyst had a better visible light absorption/photocatalytic performance than that of N-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst prepared from the oxidation of the same TiN precursor. Thus, the preparation of TiN/TiO 2 composite photocatalyst from TiN precursor should be a more preferred approach than the preparation of N-doped TiO 2 photocatalyst for visible-light-activated photocatalysis for its cost-effectiveness.

Room-temperature methane gas sensing properties based on in situ reduced graphene oxide incorporated with tin dioxide

King Cheong Lam,Bolong Huang,San-Qiang Shi

We report on the relationship between the degree of reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and its room-temperature methane gas-sensing response by comparing four in situ reducing agents of GO: D-glucose, sodium borohydride, L-ascorbic acid and hydrazine hydrate. We found that gas sensing based on D-glucose and L-ascorbic acid had a higher gas response than that based on sodium borohydride and hydrazine hydrate because the residues contained oxygen functional groups. The poorly conductive GO was successfully reduced in situ by L-ascorbic acid to achieve high electrical conductivity and a high methane gas response. The incorporation of tin dioxide (SnO2) into the reduced GO (RGO) further increased the gas response by the p–n junction effect. The heterostructure of L-ascorbic acid-reduced RGO–SnO2 had the highest increase in methane response due to the synergistic effect between dehydroascorbic acid and the SnO2 surface. This was inferred from density functional theory calculations with self-consistently determined Hubbard U potentials (DFT+U). Compared with the current room-temperature methane sensing and fabrication technologies, the sensing technology reported here is cheaper to produce and more environmentally friendly while retaining the best sensitivity and wider sensing range.

Highly active tin(IV) phosphate phase transfer catalysts for the production of lactic acid from triose sugars

Xincheng Wang,Fengbing Liang,Chongpin Huang,Yingxia Li,Biaohua Chen

Lactic acid (LA) is an important intermediate in the fine chemical industry because it is utilized as a building block for the production of biodegradable plastics. In this study, a series of tin phosphate phase transfer catalysts modified with several surfactants have been prepared by a facile one-pot synthesis method and tested for the direct conversion of trioses to LA under hydrothermal conditions. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was identified as the most promising surfactant, and the product distribution closely depended on the reaction temperature, catalyst loading and substrate concentration. Complete DHA conversion and a good yield of up to 96.1% of LA were obtained at 140 °C after 4 h of reaction time. Pyridine FTIR demonstrated the presence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, which play crucial roles in the dehydration of DHA to pyruvaldehyde (PA) and the following isomerization of generated PA to LA. Furthermore, the isomerization of PA to LA was found to be the rate-determining step. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed: 1) the coordination between PEG and the metal ions caused a greater separation of the tin ions from the phosphate anions, making them more potent Lewis acid sites, and 2) the PEG behaved as a phase transfer catalyst during the reaction. This study paves the way for the further design of improved solid acid catalysts for aqueous phase production of LA from carbohydrates.

Structure and Characterization of a Zero-Dimensional Alkali Tin Dihalides Compound Cs3Sn3F2Cl7 with the [Sn2F2Cl4]2– Clusters

Pifu Gong,Siyang Luo,Ke Xiao,Qian Huang,Yi Yang,Hongwei Huang,Yicheng Wu,Chuangtian Chen,Zheshuai Lin

A new perovskite stoichiometric alkali tin dihalides compound, Cs3Sn3F2Cl7, is synthesized by a hydrothermal method. This compound belongs to the monoclinic space group of P21/c with cell parameters of a = 9.5645(4) Å, b = 14.2057(7) Å, c = 13.5828(6) Å, and β = 93.2450(10)°. Unlike the common perovskites in which octahedra are interconnected to be a three-dimensional network, Cs3Sn3F2Cl7 possesses a zero-dimensional structure consisting of Cs+ cations, isolated [SnCl3]− trigonal pyramids, and dimer structural units [Sn2F2Cl4]2–; the latter microscopic unit is found for the first time. The thermal stability and UV–vis–NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in Cs3Sn3F2Cl7 are measured, and the electronic structure is calculated. Interestingly, the 5s2 lone-pair electrons on Sn2+ cations are stereochemically active, which results in a pretty good photocatalytic activity of the title compound.

High-performance composite transparent electrode composed of ultra-long silver nanowires and antimony-doped tin oxide nanoparticles

GyeChol Sin,KukChol Ri,SangMo Jon,GangHyok Kim

Composite transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) consisting of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and conductive metal oxides are very promising for flexible optoelectronic devices due to their smooth surface morphology and high chemical stability. However, it is still challenging to ensure high optoelectronic performance and long-term stability in practical applications. Here, we solved these problems by coating antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles dispersion on ultra-long AgNWs network using waterborne polyurethane (WPU) binder. Ultra-long nanowires occupy less wire-wire junctions and space than short nanowires, thus increasing the optoelectronic performance and flexibility of the composite TCE. WPU improves the adhesion and stability of ATO nanoparticles to the substrate and AgNWs network. The fabricated composite TCE showed a low sheet resistance of 11.9 Ω sq−1, good optical transmittance of 83% at 550 nm and a figure of merit (FOM) of 162 compared to PET/ITO electrode. It also showed excellent mechanical flexibility, adhesion to the substrate and solvent stability. Furthermore, the long-term conductivity was maintained under ambient conditions for 60 days.

Influence of Precursor Solution Composition on the Electrical Properties of Solution-Processed Indium Tin Oxide Thin Films

Jingwei Zhang,Hui Kang,Zetong Li,Siqing Yuan,Yihuan Wang,Dewen Zhao,Zhimin Chai,Xinchun Lu

Solution-based processes have emerged as a compelling alternative to the traditional vacuum-based physical vapor deposition to fabricate indium tin oxide (ITO) films owing to their advantages of cost-effectiveness, being vacuum-free, and simple equipment. Despite extensive research to improve the electrical properties of ITO films as transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), the influence of precursor solution composition on these properties remains unexplored. Here, we prepare precursor solutions that vary in anionic groups and metal cation valence states and investigate how the composition of these solutions influences the electrical properties of the solution-processed ITO films. The results reveal that incorporating nitrate anion-based precursors and Sn (II)-based precursors in the solutions leads to the ITO film with a low resistivity of 3.5 × 10–3 Ω cm. This performance is attributed to the abundant formation of M-O-M bonds and the appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies in the polycrystalline ITO films. Thin film transistors utilizing ITO patterns with reduced resistivities demonstrate enhanced field-effect mobilities, which can be attributed to the decreased contact resistances between the ITO source/drain electrodes and indium oxide channels. The practical application of patterned ITO films in flexible electroluminescent devices is demonstrated, highlighting the immense potential of using our ITO films in optoelectronic and flexible technology.

Cost-effective bifunctional lignin-derived carbon supported tin oxide with efficient production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose

Sien Yan,Linhuo Gan,Kui Wang,Kang Sun

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is one of the important bio-based platform compounds, and the catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-HMF is a highly desirable approach that is receiving increasing attention. Herein, we reported the synthesis of lignin-derived carbon supported tin oxides (SnO x /LC) catalyst via a two-step hydrothermal-pyrolytic method using wheat straw alkali lignin as a cost-effective carbon source with high carbon content. The key preparation conditions of catalyst and its catalytic conditions for the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF were investigated, respectively. Results show that under the preparation conditions of tin tetrachloride dosage of 3.0 mmol and pyrolysis temperature of 500°C, the optimized catalyst (3.0-SnO x /LC-500) with a high yield of 63.4% exhibits good catalytic performance of 5-HMF yield of 50.1% and reaction selectivity of 86.0% under the optimum conditions of reaction temperature and time of 190°C and 3 h, initial glucose concentration of 10 wt%, 3.0-SnO x /LC-500 dosage of 100 mg in a biphasic solvent system of volume ratio of water to tetrahydrofuran of 1:4. In addition, 3.0-SnO x /LC-500 exerts an excellent reusability in five-cycle experiment. Furthermore, SnO x /LC was characterized in detail using X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), ammonia temperature-programmed-desorption (NH 3 -TPD), pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Results indicate that Brønsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites coexist on 3.0-SnO x /LC-500, and more Sn 4+ as well as proper ratio of weak acidity to medium acidity are conductive to its catalytic performance in glucose-to-5-HMF reaction.

Plasmon-enhanced hydrogen production from photocatalytic methanol aqueous-phase reforming over novel nickel-tin intermetallic compounds photocatalyst

Ruiyi Wang,Mingyue Lv,Jin Zhang,Fei Wang,Xiaoli Wang,Ning Wang,Guangtao Yu,Zhanfeng Zheng

Hydrogen production from the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of methanol is promising to reduce the global carbon dioxide emission, but it is still a great challenge for hydrogen production with high catalytic efficiency at low reaction temperature. Here we report that Al 2 O 3 supported Ni 3 Sn 1 intermetallic compounds nanoparticles as new class of plasmonic photocatalyst and enables low temperature (150–190 °C), efficient hydrogen production (277 μ mol g −1 min −1 ) and low CO and CH 4 selectivity ( ≤ 0.1 %) through APR with the help of light irradiation. The hydrogen production rate of Ni 3 Sn 1 /Al 2 O 3 is 8 times higher than that of conventional noble metal 3 wt% Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst under the same optimized reaction conditions. The exceptional photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production can be attribute to higher efficiency of “hot electron” transference into the reactant due to the higher energy level of “hot electron” and the lower energy level of metal-reactant adsorption bond induced by Sn doping in Ni 3 Sn 1 under light irradiation, which not only improve the reactivity via enhanced methanol dissociation and the sequential water–gas shift (WGS) reaction, but also suppressed catalyst poisoning via accelerated CO 2 desorption over the Ni sites.

Binary host-guest strategy enables bright and efficient lead-free zero-dimensional tin halide light-emitting diodes

Qian Teng,Qinghua Tan,Mengyue Hou,Jiajia Zhang,Fanglong Yuan

Lead-free tin perovskites present remarkable environmental advantages over lead-based counterparts. While substantial progress has been made with three-dimensional (3D) and 2D tin perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs), the potential of 0D tin perovskites—renowned for their exceptional optical properties and enhanced stability—remains largely unexplored for PeLEDs due to challenges in charge transport and injection. In this study, we introduce a binary host-guest strategy that overcomes these challenges, enabling the demonstration of bright and efficient 0D tin PeLEDs with orange and white light emission. By incorporating 0D tin bromide hybrid (HDAD) 3 SnBr 8 into a meticulously designed binary host system, we achieved PeLEDs with a maximum brightness exceeding 7500 candela meters −2 and an external quantum efficiency surpassing 7%. The remarkable device performance is primarily attributed to improved film morphology, enhanced charge carrier mobility, and optimized carrier balance. Furthermore, by tailoring the device structure, we realized white LEDs with a maximum luminance of 1800 candela meters −2 .

Mitigating Sn2+ Oxidation and Enhancing Device Performance in Tin-Based Perovskites Solar Cell via CsTFA Additive Strategy

Jiaqi Wang,Hongye Dong,Zhirui Chen,Jingjing Hui,Xiangning Xu,Zijin Qiao,wang Yao,Qi Li,Cheng Mu

Tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) have been recognized as a viable lead-free alternative in the field of solar energy technology; however, their development is significantly limited by the oxidation of Sn²⁺ to Sn⁴⁺, which introduces deep-level defects and accelerates non-radiative recombination. In this study, cesium trifluoroacetate (CsTFA) is employed as an antioxidant additive to address these challenges. CsTFA not only effectively suppresses Sn²⁺ oxidation but also passivates intrinsic defect and alleviates the p-type self-doping effect. Consequently, CsTFA-doped devices exhibit significant enhancements in open-circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF), leading to a 14% enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE), along with significantly improved storage stability. This work provides a facile and efficient approach to mitigate Sn2+ oxidation and suppress non-radiative losses, offering a viable pathway toward high-performance, stable tin-based perovskite optoelectronic devices.
