Novel red-emitting Cd2MgTeO6:Eu3+ phosphors with an abnormal thermal quenching for application in w-LEDs and potential fingerprint detection

Yufeng Du,Yuxin Li,Yixuan Zhao,Xinyu Zhang,Changlin Li,Ruiqi Yang,Zhequan Zou,Jingjing Lian,Jinyou Duan,Huihong Lin,Ruijin Yu

A new series of red luminescent Cd 2 MgTeO 6 : x Eu 3+ ( x  = 0.5–50 mol%) phosphors was successfully synthesized through a high-temperature solid-phase reaction at 1000 °C. The synthesized phosphors were investigated for their phase purity, surface morphology , elemental distribution, and luminescence properties. Strong orange-red light emission (617 nm) was observed upon excitation at 398 nm, which was attributed to the electric dipole 5 D 0 - 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ . The optimal doping concentration was found to be x  = 20 mol%. Concentration quenching mechanism was identified as the interaction of near-neighbor ions. The chromaticity coordinates of all the Cd 2 MgTeO 6 :Eu 3+ samples were found to be located in the red region and were almost the same. The Cd 2 MgTeO 6 : 20 mol%Eu 3+ phosphors exhibited an unusual thermal quenching behavior, maintaining 102% of the initial intensity, thus possessing excellent thermostability. Moreover, the manufactured white light diode demonstrated a good color rendering index ( R a  = 89) with the coordinates of (0.344, 0.330) by the Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE). Additionally, the Cd 2 MgTeO 6 : 20 mol%Eu 3+ phosphor was surface-functionalized with oleic acid (OA) (Cd 2 MgTeO 6 : 20 mol%Eu 3+ @OA) to aid in the identification of Level I-III fingerprint details with high resolution and contrast. Good visualization of the latent fingerprint (LFP) was observed on different substrates. Therefore, Cd 2 MgTeO 6 :Eu 3+ phosphors hold great promise for the visualization of w-LEDs and LFPs.

Storage-reduction strategy for NOx reduction from gas turbine exhaust with W–Ti-CeOx catalyst in natural gas power plants

Ningyuan Wang,Xiaoqiang Wang,Yue Liu,Zhongbiao Wu

Traditional vanadium-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) deNO x catalyst can hardly adapt to the gas conditions (much high NO 2 /NO x ratio at lower temperature) of the start-up and low loading periods for a gas turbine . Therefore, a W–Ti-CeO x catalyst with NO x storage and reduction (NSR) function was developed in this work for gas turbine exhaust NO x elimination. The experimental results reveal that W–Ti-CeO x catalyst exhibits high NO 2 adsorption capacity at relatively low temperature while that is quite low for V–W/TiO 2 . The abundant surface Ce 3+ species can be mainly responsible for its high adsorption ability owing to the reaction between NO 2 and Ce 3+ to form nitrate/nitrite species and NO. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of W–Ti-CeO x can easily regenerate at medium–high temperature and NH 3 -SCR reaction. Furthermore, W–Ti-CeO x also shows good NH 3 -SCR activity, which can fulfill the deNO x process at high temperature. The addition of W and Ti into ceria can enhance the surface acidity and redox ability, thereby increasing the SCR activity. This work proposes a novel storage-reduction strategy for NO x elimination throughout the operation of gas turbines.

Isolation, Antibacterial, Nematicidal and Anxiolytic Activities of Essential Oil from Cinnamomum longepaniculatum (Gamble) N. Chao ex H. W. Li Leaves

Yuanyuan Zhang,Lin Zhang,Yongbin Meng,Yuangang Zu,Feng Han,Xiuhua Zhao

The utilization of natural product resources is significant for economic growth and health care. Herein, Cinnamomum longepaniculatum essential oil (CLEO) was isolated by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAH). The composition of CLEO was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and the antibacterial, nematicidal and anxiolytic activities of CLEO were evaluated. GC/MS results revealed that 33 compounds were identified, accounting for 99.87% of the total identified compounds. The major components of CLEO were monoterpenes, including β-myrcene (22.55%), eucalyptol (11.59%), α-pinene (11.56%), terpinen-4-ol (8.63%). Further research found that CLEO can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 7.13 mg/mL, MBC 14.25 mg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 14.25 mg/mL, MBC 57 mg/mL), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 14.25 mg/mL, MBC 28.50 mg/mL), the zone of inhibition were 17.49 ± 0.51 mm, 13.35 ± 0.27 mm and 15.15 ± 0.31 mm, respectively. CLEO could increase cell membrane permeability and make β-galactosidase, protein and other substances leak from the cell. Importantly, CLEO was first used to kill pine wood nematodes (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus). It was found that CLEO was toxic to B. xylophilus (LC50=30.81 mg/mL), and PWN treated with CLEO rapidly died and extended. Furthermore, CLEO was used in anxiolytic for the first time. CLEO inhalation can effectively relieve anxiety-like behaviors in open-field test (OFT) and elevated plus-maze test (EPT), and restore neurotransmitters (5-HT, NE, GABA) in brain tissue to normal levels. This study provides a strategy for the industrial production of CLEO and discovers its potential role in food transportation and preservation, forest pest control, and relief of emotional disorders such as anxiety and stress, which are beneficial to health care and economic development and provides a basis for broader application of CLEO.

Energy transfer properties of a single-phase Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor with excellent thermal stability for w-LEDs

Meiling Xie,Meihua Wu,Minghao Fang,Zhaohui Huang,Yan'gai Liu,Xiaowen Wu,Xin Min

A high temperature solid state method was used to prepare Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphors with good thermal stability. The phosphor shows a broadband excitation region of 250–430 nm, which can be matched with the emissions of ultraviolet (UV)/near-ultraviolet (NUV) LED chips for white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs). The energy transfer efficiency is 74.46% from the sensitizer Eu2+ ions to the activator Mn2+ ions, which enhances the intensities of the Na3Gd(PO4)2-based phosphor. In addition, by increasing the Mn2+ doping level in the phosphor, the Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor first shows blue light, then turns to white light, and finally emits red light under 365 nm excitation. Besides, the temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements indicate that the prepared phosphors exhibit good thermal stability. W-LEDs fabricated by combining a 365 nm chip with the Na3Gd(PO4)2:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphor exhibit bright white light, which has a high color rendering index (CRI) = 91.5, and a relatively low correlated color temperature (CCT) = 5198 K. Moreover, the CIE point is calculated to be at (0.3337, 0.3465), which is located in the white light region. These results indicate that the as-prepared phosphors can be considered as potential candidates for UV/NUV light-excited w-LED applications.

Rapid and efficient oil removal from O/W emulsions by hydrophobic porous polystyrene microspheres embedded with hydrophilic surface micro-regions

Xiaomin Xie,Jingfan Yan,Qiong Wu,Tianyu Wang,Fumin Chu,Sen Yang

Inspired by Namib Desert beetle’s back which is patterned with different wetting properties, hydrophobic porous polystyrene microspheres embedded with hydrophilic surface micro-regions (HPHs) were designed and fabricated by the radical copolymerization in the W 1 /O/W 2 double Pickering emulsions with high internal water phase. The synergistic effect of the hydrophobic surface and the hydrophilic surface micro-regions results in HPHs exhibiting superior performances for separating both surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsions. After 60 s hand-shaking, the oil was absorbed and stored within HPHs which could be separated from the water using a 600-mesh sieve, and the TOC values of purified water could be reduced to 2.06 ± 0.06–67.38 ± 2.02 ppm when the initial oil content was 1 vol%. Meanwhile, HPHs could be recovered and reused through a simple treatment. The excellent oil removal efficiency was kept even after 50 cycles. High oil removal efficiency, general applicability, easy operation and excellent recyclability endow HPHs with great potential for practical applications. And this work provides a facile and general way to prepare porous polymer microspheres with wettability contrast surfaces.

The improvement of sodium dodecyl sulfate on the electrospinning of gelatin O/W emulsions for production of core-shell nanofibers

Jinming Dai,Mei Bai,Changzhu Li,Haiying Cui,Lin Lin

In this work, different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were applied to improve the electrospinning performance of gelatin-stabilized emulsions. With the increase of SDS content, the average droplet size of emulsions became smaller and the uniformity improved. Besides, the addition of SDS could increase the apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity of the emulsion via inducing extensive association of gelatin molecules. These changes presented a positive impact on the morphology and structure of the electrospun fibers. By concentration optimization, the core-shell nanofibers were successfully fabricated with the assist of 1% (w/v) SDS with a beadless and uniform structure. Especially, the SDS crosslinking could also prevent the gelling of gelatin solution at the needle via changing the protein conformation, thereby improving the spinnability of gelatin solution with continuity. However, further increasing the SDS concentration to 2% (w/v) would cause conglutination between fibers and agglomeration of oil phase. It was due to the increased viscous resistance of emulsion resulting in insufficient jet stretching at high concentration of SDS. Finally, the gelatin nanofibers showed an enhanced structural stability under the crosslinking of SDS during 15-d storage. Hence, this study presents a practical strategy for the fabrication of bio-based nano-carriers.

Anti-thermal-quenching, color-tunable and ultra-narrow-band cyan green-emitting phosphor for w-LEDs with enhanced color rendering

Zhi Zhou,Haifeng Zhu,Xu Huang,Yalan She,Yuan Zhong,Jing Wang,Min Liu,Wei Li,Mao Xia

Highly efficient cyan/green phosphors are identified as functional block to fulfill the cyan gap in emissive spectra of traditional white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs). Herein, a series of emission-tunable solid solution phosphors, namely KAl 11-x Ga x O 17 :Mn 2+ (x = 0–11), with superior luminescence properties and anti-thermal-quenching behavior is reported. KAl 11 O 17 :Mn 2+ dedicates green emission at 510 nm with a narrow full width at half maximum of 23.5 nm, and excellent thermal quenching resistance (130.4% at 150 °C) due to the thermal induced electron detrapping. Interestingly, doping Ga 3+ ions into this hexaaluminate matrix enables harvested phosphor with enhanced emission by 2.35 times, and achieves luminescence tuning from green to cyan. Moreover, such a Ga 3+ substituting could stabilize the luminescence (nearly zero-thermal-quenching) of phosphor even at the elevated temperature range of 25–250 °C. Based on the thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this extraordinary phenomenon was reasonably assigned to the enhancement of photoionization effect and the detrapping of the captured electrons from shallow trap state. The w-LEDs fabricated by employing KAl 11-x Ga x O 17 :Mn 2+ as cyan/green emitting component show superior color rendering index (improved from 85.5 to 96.3), indicating these Mn 2+ -doped hexaaluminate phosphors may be candidates used for high-power w-LEDs in the future. This work opens up a new pathway to construct anti-thermal-quenching and spectra-tunable phosphors for optical applications.

Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells on Ultra-Thin Stainless-Steel with a Power-to-Weight Ratio over 3000 W kg−1

Chenguang Zhou,Yibo Xu,Yue Li,Kaihuai Du,Xinzhu Li,Xu Dong,Lvzhou Li,Ningyi Yuan,Jianning Ding

Ultra-thin stainless-steel substrates with excellent water-oxygen barrier properties and high thermal and electrical conductivities are suitable for the fabrication of lightweight and flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs). However, the deposition of dense perovskite films on stainless steel by the solution method is crucial because short circuits caused by perovskite holes are fatal to parallel structures. Herein, a single crystal (SC) is incorporated into the precursor solution to reduce the formation of holes in perovskite films on smooth stainless-steel substrates. Additionally, a magnetic method is developed based on the properties of stainless steel to fix and fabricate FPSCs nondestructively on ultra-thin stainless-steel films with a thickness as low as 5 μm. Furthermore, 4,6-dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DMI) was introduced to passivate the surface of the perovskite film, optimizing the contact properties of the perovskite heterojunction and adjusting the energy level of the perovskite/C 60 interface. Finally, ultra-thin FPSCs achieved a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.24% on an active area of 1.012 cm 2 and a power-to-weight ratio over 3000 W kg −1 . Moreover, under continuous illumination, the stainless-steel substrates exhibited better photothermal stability than the polymer substrates. This method provides a basis for the fabrication of lightweight, low-cost, and large-area FPSCs.

Improve the physical and oxidative stability of O/W emulsions by moderate solidification of the oil phase by stearic acid

Yuehan Wu,Fangfang Chen,Chao Zhang,Wei Lu,Zhiming Gao,Longquan Xu,Ran Wang,Katsuyoshi Nishinari

Physical instability and oxidation were two of the most evident problems existing in food emulsions . In this research, a facile approach of solidifying the oil phase by stearic acid was adopted to overcome the above problems simultaneously, emphasising the effect of the oleogelation extent. Polarizing microscope, rheological analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the oleogelation of the oil phase, and droplet size, microscopic observation and peroxide value analysis were applied to evaluate the emulsion stability. Results showed that with moderate solidification of the oil phase (0.8%–1.0% w/v stearic acid in oil phase), the emulsions exhibited excellent physical stability under the stress of centrifugal force, high salt, and long-term storage. Moreover, the oxidative stability of the emulsions was improved simultaneously, that the increasing of peroxide value was slowed significantly. Excessive solidification (e. g. 3% w/v stearic acid) of the oil phase would weaken these advantages or even bring about opposite results, due to the destruction of the emulsion droplets by the excessive crystallization. Our results suggested that moderate solidification of oil phase would be a feasible and effective approach to improve the stability of o/w emulsions, which would be significant for the industrial-scaled production.

Preparation and properties characterization of a novel soft robots partially made of silicone/W-based composites for gamma ray shielding

Jie Wang,Tengfei Zheng,Yong Gao,Dengwang Wang,Wei Cui,Jiakun Fan,Zhiming You,Jing Zhang,Xin Du,Zhaopeng Qiao,Xudong Wang,Sheng Wang,Zhanglian Xu,Chaohui Wang

Due to the inevitable harmful effects of radiation when conducting reactor repair, the robots made of rigid materials have been developed to replace human engineers. Anti-irradiation reinforcement of electronic components is a key issue for robots operating in a radioactive environment. A pneumatic-actuator soft robot was initially proposed for use in this study, due to the advantages of using fewer electronic components that require shielding from gamma rays . This paper presents a novel gamma ray radiation-resistant deformable material for the manufacture of soft robots. Here, the robot partially made of the silicone/W-based composites has the advantages of flexibility and gamma ray shielding property, which provide a novel solution for the collection of the radioactive objects and the detection of the radioactive environmental parameters, such as the temperature. The gamma ray attenuation and tensile elongation properties of the silicone/W and silicone/W/Bi 2 O 3 composites were evaluated, and the surface morphology and lattice structures of the samples with the best radiation attenuation were investigated and analysed. The gamma ray shielding was experimentally assessed by using a 60 Co radioisotope. The test results demonstrated that the gamma transmittance of the silicone/W-based composite reached 0.64452, which was a decrease of approximately 30.0% when compared to pure silicone.

Electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pr(III) and Pb(II) on W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl

Li Mei,Sun Zhongxuan,Guo Dan,Han Wei,Sun Yang,Yang Xiaoguang,Zhang Milin

The electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III) were studied on an inert W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl to extract Pr from molten salt. The electrode process kinetic of Pr(III) on W electrode was firstly explored employing cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Tafel technique, such as the diffusion coefficient of Pr(III) in eutectic LiCl-KCl and the exchange current density ( j 0 ) for Pr(III)/Pr(0) couple and the electrode reaction activation energy. Then, various electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III). Four cathode current peaks ascribed to the formation of Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds were detected, which indicated that the Pr could deposit on pre-deposited Pb film, react with Pb, and form Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the electrolytic products formed by galvanostatic electrolysis were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, which illustrated the formation of PrPb 3 intermetallic compound in LiCl-KCl-PbCl 2 -PrCl 3 melt.

Eu3+-activated Ca2YTaO6 double-perovskite compound: A novel highly efficient red-emitting phosphor for near-UV-excited warm w-LEDs

Xiaoyong Huang,Shaoying Wang,Jia Liang,Balaji Devakumar

In this work, novel Eu 3+ ions activated red emitting Ca 2 YTaO 6 (CYT) phosphors have been prepared via a high-temperature solid-state reaction approach. Their crystal structure and photoluminescence properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra , and decay lifetimes. XRD Rietveld refinement results revealed that the CYT:Eu 3+ phosphors crystallized in the monoclinic structure with the space group of P 2 1 / n and lattice parameters of a  = 5.5989 Å, b  = 5.8449 Å, c  = 8.1016 Å, α  =  γ  = 90°, β  = 89.8799°, and V  = 264.625 Å 3 . The CYT: x Eu 3+ phosphors could be excited by near-ultraviolet light around 396 nm, and they showed bright narrowband red emissions peaking at 590, 614, 656, and 703 nm due to the 5 D 0 → 7 F J (J = 1–4) transitions of Eu 3+ ions. The 614 nm red emission corresponding to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition was dominant in the emission spectra, indicating that the Eu 3+ ions occupied non-centrosymmetric sites. The critical quenching concentration in CYT: x Eu 3+ phosphors was 50 mol%, and the optimal CYT:0.5Eu 3+ phosphors showed PL intensity as great as 4.2 times higher than the commercial red phosphors Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ . CIE chromaticity coordinates of CYT:0.5Eu 3+ phosphors were (0.6678, 0.3319), and the color purity reached up to 97.4%. The nonradiative energy transfer between the Eu 3+ ions in the CYT host was attributable to dipole-dipole interaction, and the critical distance was roughly 7.97 Å. A warm white light-emitting diode (w-LED) based on the combination of a 395 nm LED chip with a blend of commercial BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ blue phosphors and commercial (Ba,Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ green phosphors and as-prepared CYT:0.5Eu 3+ red phosphors was fabricated, which gave warm white-light emission with excellent CIE color coordinates of (0.3833, 0.3859), low correlated color temperature of 3991 K, high color rendering index of 92.1, and good luminous efficacy of 21.76 lm/W.
