The intrinsic property of WO 3 determines that it has stronger interaction with triethylamine (TEA), which makes the WO 3 sensing material to be an ideal TEA detector. In order to further improve the sensing performance of WO 3 gas sensors, a novel synthesis and modification method was proposed to fabricate Mn-doped WO 3 nanostructure. The unique structure of Mn/WO 3 was assembled by ultrathin nanosheets into hierarchical hollow fibers. Compared with the pristine WO 3 with similar structure, the Mn/WO 3 gas sensor shows greatly enhanced TEA sensing properties. The improvement of gas sensing performance of Mn/WO 3 should be due to the increase of oxygen vacancies and surface adsorbed oxygen after doping of Mn. Under the optimized preparing conditions, the Mn/WO 3 -500 sensor exhibits high sensing response (32 towards 50 ppm TEA), excellent selectivity, fast response-recovery speed and reliable repeatability and long-term stability at its optimal working temperature of 200 ℃. The superior TEA sensing performance of the Mn/WO 3 -500 sensor opens the door for potential applications in TEA recognition and detection.

In this work, a self-template in situ etching strategy was applied to fabricate a hollow shuttle-like WO 3 -Co 3 O 4 heterojunction. The morphology and nanostructure were investigated comprehensively by a series of techniques. Notably, the hollow shuttle-like WO 3 -Co 3 O 4 shows a large specific area and promising architecture, which can efficiently promote the gas adsorption-desorption process and provide more active sites in whole composites. Compared to other sensing devices, the WO 3 -Co 3 O 4 sample with hollow shuttle-like architecture shows the best gas sensing characterizations, and the response to 100 ppm acetone is as high as 52 under optimum working temperature. Moreover, it also presents good repeatability, high against moisture, fast response-recovery speed and long-term stability. The enhanced gas sensing characterizations can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of a unique hollow shuttle-like structure and the p-n heterojunction at the interface of WO 3 and Co 3 O 4 . These admirable properties make it an excellent candidate for constructing high-performance acetone sensors. In addition, the relative sensing mechanism of shuttle-like WO 3 -Co 3 O 4 composites-based sensors will be discussed in detail.

The synergy between surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) and heterojunction engineering holds promising potential for substantially enhancing photoelectric conversion efficiency through the optimization of photogenerated charge carrier transport. Herein, novel WO 3 -OVs@Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterostructures are synthesized via a simple route for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) using visible light. The S-scheme charge transfer mode markedly enhances the spatial separation and preservation of high-energy electrons/holes on Bi 2 MoO 6 (reduction) and WO 3 -OVs (oxidation), consequently providing WO 3 -OVs@Bi 2 MoO 6 photocatalysts with an improved redox capability. The optimal WO 3 -OVs@Bi 2 MoO 6 heterojunction demonstrates enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline, exhibiting 4.86-fold and 4.17-fold higher efficiency compared to WO 3 -OVs and Bi 2 MoO 6 , respectively, with superior stability and reusability. Confirmation of the existence of the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and oxygen vacancies (OVs) is achieved through a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), substantiating the enhancement of charge separation and redox capability. Specifically, the presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) on the surface of WO 3 nanofibers results in a reduction of the band gap energy due to the defect levels, consequently promoting increased electron conduction. Furthermore, the abundance of oxygen vacancies (OVs) expands the photo response range and facilitates charge transfer at the interface. This research opens new avenues for the successful photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) by integrating hierarchical S-scheme heterojunction design and cutting-edge defect engineering in photocatalytic heterojunctions.

Indoor VOCs pollution has attracted broad attention for its harm to mankind’s health recent years. Photocatalytic degradation of indoor VOCs holds great prospects in addressing these health concerns in daily life. However, traditional photocatalysts have a large recombination rate of charge carriers and a decrease of the photocatalytic degradation efficiency under high relative humidity. Herein, uniform tungsten oxide nanoparticles with enriched oxygen vacancies (WO 3 -U) were synthesized by a direct annealing method with urea addition, which exhibited superior performance in the visible-light photocatalysis. The reaction rate constant value of photocatalytic acetaldehyde degradation over WO 3 -U catalyst was above 3 times higher than that of pristine WO 3 sample. More importantly, the WO 3 -U catalyst maintained stable and excellent photocatalytic performance at relative humidity range of 25–100 %. Except for the enhanced photogenerated charges separation, abundant oxygen vacancies could effectively accelerate O 2 activation to generate •O 2 − , which accounted mainly for the initial conversion of acetaldehyde. Then the subsequent transformation of •O 2 − into •OH to promoted the final mineralization of acetaldehyde. In addition, the presence of oxygen vacancies also facilitated H 2 O dissociation to form surface hydroxyl groups, which increased the adsorption of acetaldehyde, resulting in the consistent photocatalytic performance of WO 3 -U catalyst within a wide humidity range. This work provides guidelines to design visible-light responsive photocatalysts with efficient activity at high humidity conditions for indoor VOCs degradation.

Spectrally selective photodetectors (SSPDs) are crucial components in diverse fields, such as telecommunications, environmental surveillance, and medical diagnostics. Typically, these devices rely on external optical filters to selectively detect light within a narrow spectral band. While this scheme is effective, it adds complexity to the system architecture and raises manufacturing costs, which can also potentially lead to a decrease in sensitivity. Alternatively, the formation of heterojunctions between conductive filters and semiconductors can develop SSPDs that not only possess simplified architecture but also exhibit inherent self-filtering capabilities. In this work, we introduce an amorphous WO3/GaN heterojunction ultraviolet SSPD that exhibits a distinct detection peak at 370 nm, with a full width at half-maximum of less than 20 nm. The WO3 thin films were deposited photochemically under ultraviolet light by using a metal chloride precursor. The SSPD offers excellent photodetection performance, with a high photo-to-dark current ratio of 6.19 × 104, a high responsivity of 495 mA/W, and an excellent specific detectivity of up to 3.31 × 1011 Jones at −5 V, all of which are significantly improved compared to the crystalline WO3/GaN device. Additionally, our SSPD shows promise for selective imaging applications within the near-UV spectrum.

To increase active sites, mitigate photo corrosion, expedite electron transfer and suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, we synthesized a WO 3 @PDA/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary composites using a straightforward method, where PDA served as adhesion interface and electronic transfer bridge. The photocatalytic activity of WO 3 @PDA/Ag 3 PO 4 was assessed by degrading organic pollutants under visible light. The results demonstrated that 0.5 g/L WO 3 @PDA/Ag 3 PO 4 could eliminate 30 mg/L of methyl orange (MO) within 60 min and achieve an 80.7 % degradation rate for moxifloxacin (Mox) within 180 min. After five adsorption-photocatalytic cycles, the WO 3 @PDA/Ag 3 PO 4 maintained a removal efficiency of 95.88 % for MO and 75.56 % for Mox, showcasing its cycling stability. The photocatalytic mechanism of WO 3 @PDA/Ag 3 PO 4 was elucidated through a series of characterizations, which indicated that the Z-type heterojunction formed between WO 3 and Ag 3 PO 4 , along with PDA's electron-conducting ability, provided a strong driving force for the photocatalytic reaction. This study introduces an idea for enhancing the construction of Z-type heterojunctions with PDA as the electron-conducting interface, thereby improving photocatalytic performance.

As hydrogen is widely used as a clean energy source, the hazards of its flammable and explosive properties are gradually emphasized. Therefore, it is imminent to develop a hydrogen sensor with high response, fast detection speed and low detection limit. In this paper, a PdO/WO 3 composite with fruit-leaf-like structure was synthesized by in-situ hydrothermal and self-assembly impregnation method, and its H 2 sensing performance was investigated. The results show that the self-assembled loading of PdO can greatly improve the H 2 sensing performance of WO 3 , in which the PdO/WO 3 -1 sensor exhibits a very high response value (338.7) and a very short response/recovery time (1 s/4 s) at 120°C to 100 ppm H 2 . The enhanced sensor performance is mainly due to the catalytic effect of the noble metal PdO on H 2 and the synergistic effect between WO 3 and PdO. The growth rhythm of PdO nanoparticles and the effect on the H 2 sensing performance of PdO/WO 3 composites were also explained by varying the concentration of PdCl 2 solution. The density functional theory calculation proves that the hydrogen sensing performance is improved after the combination of PdO and WO 3 . This study provides a feasible solution for the development of high-performance WO 3 -based H 2 sensors.

At present, tumor immune escape is a major problem in the treatment of tumors. The complex network of tumor microenvironments significantly impairs the efficacy of immunotherapy. This paper reports the preparation and immunoantitumor activity of a novel multifunctional defect tungsten trioxide@ferrocene-folic acid composite (WO 3-x @Fe-FA) with a high Fenton reaction rate. Ferrocene is modified on the surface of defective trioxide by the covalent coupling method for the first time, and the reaction rate of Fenton is increased by 10 times. WO 3-x @Fe-FA induces immunogenic cell death (ICD) through the powerful synergistic anti-tumor effect of PTT/CDT and decomposes H 2 O 2 to produce oxygen through the Fenton reaction, thus down-regulating the expression of immune checkpoint PD-L1 induced by tumor hypoxia. In vitro and in vivo experiments proved that WO 3-x @Fe-FA reverses the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, transforms the immunosuppressive “cold tumor” into the immune “hot tumor”, and activates the immune activity of the system. In vitro and in vivo experiments show that WO 3-x @Fe-FA has excellent immunoantitumor activity, and it is expected to be a candidate drug for immunoantitumor therapy.

In wastewater containing heavy metals, Cr(VI) is a potentially toxic metal, mainly derived from production and processing processes such as textile printing, dyeing, ore mining, battery applications, metal cleaning and electroplating. WO3 is widely used in photocatalytic degradation and reduction, and its utilization rate of visible light is high. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs of WO3 limits its use. In this work, the composite material (WxMy) of WO3 and MIL-125 (Ti) was prepared by the ball milling method, and the catalyst was used to photocatalytically reduce Cr(VI). After using W90M10 as a photocatalyst for 50 min, the reduction rate of Cr(VI) can reach 99.2%, and the reduction rate is 2.3 times that of WO3. After 5 cycles of use, the reduction rate can still reach 91.3%. It is mainly due to the formation of a II-type heterojunction between WO3 and MIL-125 (Ti), which promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thus improving the efficiency of photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI).

Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalysts can effectively suppress the recombination of charge carriers while maintaining high redox capacity. In this study, ZnTe/WO 3 (ZW) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and a series of photocatalytic materials were prepared for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) from water. The physicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalytic materials were characterized through various methods, including SEM, XRD, XPS, and others. The experimental results indicate that the ZW-10 % composite material exhibits the most significant removal efficiency for pollutants. Within 150 min of visible light irradiation, the removal rates for TC and Cu(II) reach 73.8 % and 73.3 %, respectively, representing a substantial improvement compared to individual ZnTe and WO 3 . Free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance analysis reveal that ·O 2 − and ·OH are the key reactive species responsible for TC oxidation, while electrons (e − ) dominate the reduction of Cu(II).

As the discharge product of lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries, the reversible decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 has long been a critical bottleneck limiting the electrochemical performance of Li-CO 2 batteries. Appropriate design of catalysts is reported to effectively tackle this problem, a theory-guided design and preparation of cathode catalysts is especially favored due to their highly efficient catalyst-adsorbate interactions. Here, Ce atoms are anchored onto WO 3 through their deep-energy-level orbitals and localized 4f electrons. Benefiting from their unique role in band hybridization, Ce atoms establish a dual d-f band redox center. Concurrently, the introduction of Ce induces a Jahn-Teller distortion in the WO 3 lattice, which selectively regulates crystal facet growth. This facet engineering strategy facilitates strong Li 2 CO 3 anchoring, enabling the decomposition with an ultra-low charge-discharge polarization gap of 0.62 V during CO 2 evolution reaction (CO 2 ER) process. This Li-CO 2 battery can maintain a charging voltage below 4.0 V for 280 cycles with the current density of 200 mA g −1 . This Ce-induced lattice reconstruction strategy overcomes the limitations of conventional catalyst activity, offering novel strategies and theoretical insights for the development of high-performance Li-CO 2 batteries.

Interface engineering has been proven to be a promising strategy for regulating carrier transport. Herein, an interfacial Mo–O–W bond was constructed between Bi2MoO6 nanospheres and WO3 quantum dots. It served as a fast transfer channel for interfacial photogenerated carriers, resulting in the formation of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction. The Z-scheme heterojunction not only maximized the redox ability but also exhibited enhanced separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Thereby, it exhibited excellent degradation activity and reusability for different simulated pollutants (levofloxacin, rhodamine B, and methylene blue) under LED irradiation, and its photocatalytic rate is approximately doubled. Unexpectedly, a considerable amount of H2O2 was formed via a direct one-step two-electron oxygen reduction reaction process, which played a significant role in the photodegradation process, even surpassing the role of electrons/holes as active species. Furthermore, the photodegradation pathway of levofloxacin by the Z-scheme heterojunction was analyzed. This study could provide insights into establishing an interfacial chemical bond, modulating charge transfer, and the photodegradation mechanism.
