The discharge of toxic pollutants and the abuse of antibiotics present significant risks to both global food safety and public health. The utilization of clean mechanical energy for catalytic degradation has been demonstrated as a promising approach to overcome prevalent obstacles. In this work, we employ the approach of manipulating carrier separation through interface engineering to boost the piezocatalytic performance of BiFeO 3 (BFO). Specifically, a Z -scheme heterojunction is established with BFO by utilizing energy band-matching Bi 2 S 3 (BS). In contrast to the pure BFO (1.49 × 10 −2 min −1 ) and BS (1.64 × 10 −2 min −1 ), the BFO/BS heterojunction demonstrates a notable enhancement in piezocatalytic performance, reaching 3.56 × 10 −2 min −1 . This enhancement is believed to be due to the presence of a polarization field facilitating band tilt and the construction of Z -scheme heterojunction. Following the implementation of light assistance, the piezocatalytic efficiency of BFO/BS is enhanced to a greater extent (6.07 × 10 −2 min −1 ), attributing to the enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers facilitated by the piezoelectric polarization field. This study not only demonstrates the potential of BFO/BS as a catalytic candidate material by multimodal renewable energy harvesting, but also offers insights for the strategy of enhancing catalytic activity through interface engineering.

Metal-organic framework derived materials received a lot of attention due to their significant benefits in photocatalytic reactions. In this work, a Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 hierarchical heterojunction is first developed by a one-pot method using CAU-17 as a template. The specific preparation method endows an intimate interface contact between these two monomers, and CAU-17-derived Bi 2 S 3 possesses a high surface area and porosity, resulting in an efficient charge separation and O 2 capture. Thus, for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production from the O 2 reduction reaction, the ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction can achieve an H 2 O 2 yield of 995 µmol L −1 in pure water and ambient air under visible light, 4.5 and 4 times that of ZnIn 2 S 4 and Bi 2 S 3 , respectively. In addition, in tetracycline solution, ZnIn 2 S 4 /Bi 2 S 3 can degrade tetracycline with a degradation rate of 95% by photocatalysis, and at the same time, a final H 2 O 2 production yield of 1223 µmol L −1 is reached. Similarly, high yields of H 2 O 2 are also obtained from wastewater containing o -nitrophenol, acid golden yellow, or acid red, and these pollutants are effectively degraded. This work reveals the potential of metal-organic framework-derived materials in photocatalysis, as well as provides insights into H 2 O 2 green synthesis and wastewater treatment.

In this paper, M88/BCB Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. A series of characterization analyses showed that the introduction of iron-based MOF material M88 with mixed valence (Fe2+/Fe3+) increased not only the specific surface area of BCB, which was 2.2 times higher than that of BiOCl0.1Br0.9 solid solution, but also the existence of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox centers promoting the in situ photoFenton-like reaction, which could generate more ˙O2− and ˙OH. In addition, the introduction of M88 further enhances the visible light response capability of BCB and the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Under visible light for 120 min, 10% M88/BCB can degrade 89.74% of TC, which is 2.1 times and 1.6 times higher than that of M88 and BCB, respectively. A possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunctions was proposed based on the study of the band structure and the capture experiment of active species.

Tetracycline (TC) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and its introduction into the environment is known to cause serious water pollution issues and can result in the evolution of drug-resistant genes and superbugs. In this study, a new ZnTiO3–SrTiO3 double perovskite composite photocatalyst, synthesized using a simple molten salt method, was found to exhibit excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of TC in an aqueous solution under visible-light photoirradiation at λ = 420 nm. Individually, ZnTiO3 and SrTiO3 were identified as being inactive in the same reaction. However, the addition of Bi2O3 to the ZnTiO3–SrTiO3 composite (Bi2O3/ZnTiO3–SrTiO3) formed a dual-Z-scheme heterojunction, achieving 87.1% photocatalytic degradation rate of TC within 60 min. The obtained reaction rate constant (k = 0.03052 min–1) was 9.5 and 1.62 times higher than those achieved using the individual SrTiO3 (k = 0.00321 min–1) and ZnTiO3–SrTiO3 (k = 0.01882 min–1) species, respectively. Furthermore, a potential degradation pathway and mechanism for TC degradation using the Bi2O3/ZnTiO3–SrTiO3 composite photocatalyst was proposed. Overall, this approach provides a cost-effective and efficient method for preparing dual Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

The construction of heterojunctions can effectively inhibit the rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in photocatalysts and offers great potential for pollutant degradation. In this study, a Z-scheme heterojunction g-C3N4/WO3photocatalyst was synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal and calcination methods. The photocatalytic degradation performance was tested under visible light; the degradation efficiency of Rh B reached 97.9% within 15 min and that of TC-HCl reached 93.3% within 180 min. The excellent photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/WO3composites can be attributed to the improved absorption of visible light, the increase in surface area, and the effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. In addition, after four cycles of experiments, the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/WO3did not decrease obviously, remaining at 97.8%, which proved that the g-C3N4/WO3heterojunction had high stability and reusability. The active radical capture experiment confirmed that h+and ·O2−played a leading role in the photocatalytic degradation. The Z-scheme heterojunction g-C3N4/WO3designed and synthesized in this study is expected to become an efficient photocatalyst suitable for environmental pollution control.

The fabrication of non-metallic semiconductor heterojunction with superior redox capability for hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution from water and environmental remediation has been emerging as a prospective strategy. Herein, a novel two-dimensional (2D) g-C 3 N 4 /Ni-MOF Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared by a facile sonication-gel self-assembly method with g-C 3 N 4 and nickel metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) nanosheets . The ultra-thin nanosheet structure of Ni-MOF was conducive to the formation of stable 2D heterojunctions. The opposite surface charge and matched band difference caused the charge flow from g-C 3 N 4 to Ni-MOF, resulting in an interfacial built-in electric field. The optimized NMF/CN-9 attained the optimal 3aphotocatalytic activity towards the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and H 2 evolution from water. Under visible light irradiation , the reaction rate for TC degradation (0.00497 min −1 ) and H 2 evolution (15.6 μmol·h −1 ) over NMF/CN-9 was nearly 2.4 and 2.1 folds higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Besides, the photocatalytic performance of NMF/CN-9 was also nearly 2 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 under simulated solar illumination. Such improvements were originated from higher photo-excited charge separation and superior redox ability derived from Z-scheme interfacial charge transfer. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was also proposed and the results indicated that efficient photo-induced electrons and reactive hole (h + ), superoxide radical (·O 2 - ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) played a major role during the photocatalytic route. This work offers an intense insight into the construction of non-metallic semiconductor 2D heterojunctions for H 2 evolution and environmental wastewater treatment .

Converting CO 2 into high-value-added chemicals by artificial photosynthesis technology effectively solves environmental problems and energy shortages. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to improve CO 2 conversion rates due to low photo-utilization and rapid electron-hole recombination. In this study, we successfully synthesized direct Z-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /BaTiO 3 heterojunction structure by a hydrothermal method. Specifically, compared with previous studies of various heterojunction catalysts, ZnIn 2 S 4 /BaTiO 3 heterojunction structure achieved a remarkably high yield of 105.89 μmol g -1 h - 1 , increasing 2.55 and 3.62-fold over the individual performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 and BaTiO 3 , respectively. Our investigation of photocatalytic mechanism suggest that the improved photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the piezoelectric effect and Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism. These effects can synergistically enhance space charge separation and retain photogenerated electrons, thereby facilitating a more efficient CO 2 reduction process. Consequently, this innovative piezoelectric effect-assisted Z-scheme heterojunction demonstrates immense potential to offer a novel strategy for addressing CO 2 reduction challenges and advancing sustainable energy development.

Heterojunction photocatalytic materials show great promise in hydrogen production from water decomposition under visible light. The selection of components in the heterojunction and the type of heterojunction constructed directly determine the hydrogen production efficiency. In this study, black phosphorene (BP), which has a broad visible light absorption range, and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS), with a suitable band structure, are chosen to design new heterojunction photocatalysts. Through an ultrasound-assisted solvothermal method, a BP/ZIS heterojunction with a unique layered 2D/2D structure is successfully synthesized. Comprehensive characterization and calculation have elucidated the microstructure and band structure of BP and ZIS, further confirming the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction. Such a novel BP/ZIS heterojunction exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1317 µmol·h −1 ·g −1 , making a 3.35-fold increase compared to ZIS and superior performance over BP. This enhancement in photocatalytic activity of BP/ZIS heterojunction can be primarily attributed to the enhanced light harvesting and carrier utilization resulting from the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provides new insights for the development of efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

This article aims at preparing of Z-scheme heterojunction NiCo-LDH/Bi 2 WO 6 (LDH: layered double hydroxides) via a solvothermal technique, addressing the rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs caused by the narrow bandgap of Bi 2 WO 6 . Successful loading of NiCo-LDH onto Bi 2 WO 6 was confirmed through various characterization techniques, assessing the composite's crystal structure, morphological traits, and performance. Notably, the NiCo-LDH/Bi 2 WO 6 composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance in the degradation of tetracycline (TC), achieving an optimal reaction rate of 0.03 min −1 , which is 4.8 times faster than that of Bi 2 WO 6 alone. The findings demonstrate that the formation of the heterojunction structure facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by reducing recombination in monomers. Free radical trapping experiments showcased that the decomposition of TC is primarily driven by h + and ∙O 2 − . Additionally, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis identified the degradation products of TC and suggested two potential degradation pathways. The present research provides a novel approach for preparing LDH photocatalytic materials using NiCo-LDH/Bi 2 WO 6 .

The photocatalytic efficiency can be improved by constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction, but hindered by the only half utilization efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Thus, a novel material, UiO-66-NH 2 @TAPB-BTCA-COP-Ag (U6N@COP-Ag), with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect synergistic Z-scheme heterostructure has been prepared by depositing Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on TAPB-BTCA-COP (COP)-coated UiO-66-NH 2 . The deposited Ag NPs expand the range of light absorption and introduce more photogenerated electrons in the composite. The SPR effect of noble metal compensates for the limited utilization of the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carriers and the increased density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end, which is more conducive to the redox reaction of the catalyst. Without sacrificial agents, U6N@COP-Ag shows great photocatalytic nitrogen reduction conversion efficiency with the rate of NH 4 + in ammonia water at 167.63μmol g -1 h −1 , which is 6.6 and 2.8 times that of the original UiO-66-NH 2 and COP, respectively. In-situ XPS and Kelvin probe technology verify that UiO-66-NH 2 and Ag nanoparticles provide more photogenerated electrons to COP. The cleavage and conversion of N 2 to NH 4 + on U6N@COP-Ag was confirmed by the enhancement of N H bonds and NH 4 + characteristic absorption peaks in the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS). This work presents a great method to improve the Z-scheme heterojunction photogenerated carrier utilization and the density of semiconductor carriers at the reducing end by the noble metal SPR effect, which is more conducive to enhance the redox reaction of the catalyst.

The effective removal of tetracycline (TC) from aquatic environments remains a critical challenge due to its persistence and ecological risks. In this study, a novel magnetic photocatalyst (MCB) was synthesized by loading Fe 3 O 4 and CuWO 4 onto biochar, aiming to integrate adsorption enrichment with Z-scheme visible-light photocatalysis. The biochar (BC) framework exhibited a high specific surface area (117.70 m 2 g −1 ), enabling efficient TC capture with an adsorption rate of 81.19 % and a Langmuir-derived maximum capacity of 225.28 mg g −1 at 35 °C. Kinetic modeling revealed a pseudo-second-order chemisorption mechanism, while thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The Z-scheme heterojunction formed between CuWO 4 and Fe 3 O 4 effectively promoted photogenerated charge carrier separation and enhanced redox potential, facilitating the production of reactive species. The incorporation of BC introduces additional electron transfer-active sites, thereby markedly enhancing the charge transport rate. Electron spin resonance and scavenger experiments verified h + , •OH and •O 2 − as the dominant oxidative agents. As a result, 0.6-MCB achieved a total TC removal efficiency of 92.83 % and a TOC removal rate of 85.57 %, indicating strong mineralization performance. After five cycles, it maintained 79.45 % removal efficiency, demonstrating good recyclability and structural stability. Toxicity analysis demonstrated that the degradation process significantly reduces both the toxicity and teratogenicity of TC and its intermediates, thereby underscoring the environmental safety and practical applicability of 0.6-MCB. This work provides a promising material platform for sustainable antibiotic removal in wastewater treatment.

Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalysts can effectively suppress the recombination of charge carriers while maintaining high redox capacity. In this study, ZnTe/WO 3 (ZW) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and a series of photocatalytic materials were prepared for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) from water. The physicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalytic materials were characterized through various methods, including SEM, XRD, XPS, and others. The experimental results indicate that the ZW-10 % composite material exhibits the most significant removal efficiency for pollutants. Within 150 min of visible light irradiation, the removal rates for TC and Cu(II) reach 73.8 % and 73.3 %, respectively, representing a substantial improvement compared to individual ZnTe and WO 3 . Free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance analysis reveal that ·O 2 − and ·OH are the key reactive species responsible for TC oxidation, while electrons (e − ) dominate the reduction of Cu(II).
