Melamine (MA)-passivated Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method . The MA-passivated QDs can form a charge-transfer complex with picric acid (PA) at 80 °C, thereby quenching the phosphorescence of the QDs. A sensitive method for detecting PA was established based on this principle of phosphorescence quenching . When the PA concentration ranged from 2.0 to 180 ng mL −1 , the concentration was linearly related to the quenching intensity of the QDs, with a detection limit of 1.4 ng mL −1 . When applied to detect PA in environmental water samples, the proposed method showed superior analytical performance compared with other PA analysis methods. Furthermore, we verified the static quenching mechanism by density functional theory . MA on the surface of QDs and PA formed a stable structure with a binding energy of 12.43 eV.

Cd-based quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have outstanding optical properties, which are promising for a wide range of applications in the fields of lighting and display. However, it is still a research hotspot to prepare high-quality quantum dots (QDs) which can satisfy the requirements of preparing high-performance devices. Here, we develop a facile method to prepare high-quality alloyed CdSeS/CdS/ZnS QDs with a single precursor material, and the as-prepared alloyed QDs have high luminous intensity and narrow size distribution. The alloyed QDs have a uniform and gradient internal structure, there is no abrupt boundary in the final alloyed QDs. This is beneficial to reducing the carrier injection barrier and improving the carrier injection efficiency of electroluminescent devices. The alloyed gradient core/shell QDs-based green QLEDs were fabricated successfully and maximum current efficiency of 33.7 cd/A was obtained. This paper will provide a new strategy to prepare high-performance QLED devices.

Photocatalytic reduction to harmless nitrogen gas is considered a promising method for the removal of nitrate from water. However, achieving high efficiency of photocatalytic nitrate reduction , especially without the assistance of a hole scavenger, remains a critical issue. Herein, PANI-CS (PC) is prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline on the surface of biomass corn straw, and then ZnS QDS is loaded to synthesize ZnS QDs-PANI-CS (ZPC) catalysts for photocatalytic reduction of nitrate. The optimized ZPC shows highly selective and efficient photocatalytic reduction of NO 3 – without extra sacrificial agents, with the 0.8% ZPC delivering an excellent nitrate removal rate of 98.4% and N 2 selectivity of 96.8%. Outstanding catalytic performance is attributed to the ZPC having higher electron mobility and longer electron lifetime. Additionally, ZnS QDs induce the conversion of the quinone ring of PANI to the benzene ring, thereby improving the reducibility of the catalyst. Most importantly, The carbon–sulfur double bond on the ZnS quantum dots and the bicarbonate on the surface of the straw are the sources of formic acid , which provides great help for the production of CO 2 •- with reduction activity. The introduction of ZnS QDs also enriches the Lewis acid sites on the ZPC surface, thereby enhancing the N 2 selectivity, and simultaneity, the stability of the composite is consolidated due to the formation of N-Zn covalent bonds, laying the foundation for the commercialization of the catalyst. This work introduces the characteristics of self-produced formic acid into photocatalysts through ingenious design, which provides a new idea for the photocatalytic treatment of nitrate wastewater.

Herein, CuS was incorporated with ZnS to form a novel nanocomposite via cation exchange, and the product was then employed for dual application of the colorimetric determination and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) in water. The formed p–n heterojunction provided an improved gap width and electron mobility, which could rapidly catalyze H2O2to produce plenty of •OH, supporting a color conversion with TMB. Meanwhile, the addition of TC could lead to the further enhancement in colorimetric signal, and the distinction level was sensitive to the target amount. Additionally, under light conditions, the p-CuS/n-ZnS could produce •O2−, •OH, and h+through photocatalysis, and these ions could degrade the TC via oxidation. In the colorimetric determination of TC, the signal responses were obtained within 10 min, and the detection limit was 20.94 nM. The recovery rates were 99% and 106% for the water samples from Ganjiang river. In the photocatalytic degradation, the TC was degraded by 91% within 120 min, which was threefold that of ZnS. Meanwhile, the morphology feature of the p-CuS/n-ZnS remained after multiple uses, suggesting a favorable material stability. This strategy provides application prospects for the monitoring and control of antibiotics in water. Keywords:p–n heterojunction;tetracycline;colorimetric determination;photocatalysis;degradation

In this work, we designed new dual-mode “turn-on” electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors for the detection of dopamine (DA) based on 0D/2D/2D CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dot (QD)–black phosphorous nanosheet (BPNS)–TiO 2 nanosheet (TiO 2 NS) nanocomposites. QDs can not only improve the photocurrent of the developed PEC sensors, but also provide the electrochemical signal in the EC detection. BPNSs as p-type semiconductor with high conductive properties work as electron acceptors and are utilized to improve the sensitivity of the DA PEC and EC sensors. Under irradiation of visible light or the applied voltage, DA is both excited and releases electrons, realizing “turn-on” detection. The PEC sensors have a linear range of 0.1–100 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.028 μM. For the EC detection, BPNSs can accelerate electron transfer which attribute to its excellent conductivity. In the range of 1–200 μM, the working curve of DA detection by the EC sensors was established and the detection limit is 0.88 μM. Comparing the two methods, the PEC sensors have a lower detection limit, and the EC sensors have a wider monitoring range. The dual-mode sensors of EC and PEC pave an effective way for the detection in biological and medical fields. Graphical abstract

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for stress/strain sensing applications owing to their pressure-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and nanoscale size, while the impact of stress and microstructure on their optical properties still awaits in-depth investigations under more realistic loading conditions. Herein, bare CuInS2 QDs and core–shell structured CuInS2/ZnS QDs are investigated under repetitive pressure loadings to elucidate the pressure-dependent PL responses over many pressure cycles. The CuInS2/ZnS QDs not only show higher PL intensity but also exhibit a reliable and simple relationship between PL emission peak energy (EPL) and external pressure (P), which is desirable for actual application in stress/strain sensing. Specifically, the EPL–P relationship of bare CuInS2 QDs changes after the first loading–unloading cycle, while the EPL–P relationship of CuInS2/ZnS QDs shows repeatable trajectories under different cycles. This research provides experimental support for designing QD-based stress/strain sensing materials and explains how the shell and surface microstructure will affect the mechanical-luminescence responses of QDs.

In this work, an efficient and stable fluorescent probe for Al3+ was established. The fluorescent probe based on the fluorescence 'turn-on' mode of zinc sulfide crystal composite zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnS/ZnO QDs). The ZnS/ZnO QDs were synthesized via two-step method using L-Cysteine (L-Cys) as a sulfur source and stabilizer. In the synthesis of ZnS/ZnO QDs, the fluorescence of zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs) decreased and its stability increased in aqueous solution after the addition of L-Cys. In addition, the as-synthesized ZnS/ZnO QDs shows fluorescent enhancement to Al3+. The ZnS/ZnO QDs based fluorescence 'turn-on' probe presented wide linear ranges (1 nM–8 μM and 8–100 μM). The availability of as-established sensing probe was also estimated by real water sample tests. Furthermore, the fluorescent enhancing mechanism was carried out by recording the fluorescent lifetime of samples, which might be related to the QDs dispersion and charge transfer weaken.

Single-phased and dual-emissive nanocrystals with broad emission are attractive fluorescent materials for optoelectronic devices due to their unique properties. Until now, the effect of different metallic cations and inorganic anions on III–V group quantum dots (QDs) concerning luminescence features and crystalline growth has been less explored. In this work, dual-emissive InP/ZnS QDs single-doped with transition-metal compounds (Cu2+, Ag+, or Mn2+) are synthesized to compare their optical and morphological properties. The corresponding doping concentrations to realize dual emission with comparative intensity for Cu, Ag, and Mn are 0.8, 6, and 80%, which vary greatly and might be attributed to different precursor reactivities. As for the morphological and internal structures, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicate that transition-metal ions have no obvious effect on the morphological properties and a higher concentration of chloride anions binding with an In-rich interface could conduce to a homogeneous distribution and triangular growth through the comparison of different metal chlorides as precursors. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results further demonstrate that the high-resolution In 3d spectrum of Mn-doped InP/ZnS QDs with MnCl2 is mainly dominated by In–P bonds, indicating fewer intermediate chemical states. These results concerning well-defined InP/ZnS QDs could promote more diverse insight into surface chemistry and help to better understand the growth mechanism, thus making it possible to regulate InP/ZnS QDs into desired formats for different practical applications like white light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The construction of S-scheme heterojunctions is an effective approach to realize artificial photocatalytic processes. For the higher solar energy conversion efficiency, current research focuses on improving the interfacial intimacy and precisely modulating the strength of the internal electric field (IEF). To address this issue, we propose a novel MOF-based synthesis and derivation strategy. The heterojunction obtained by this strategy tends to form an intimate interface and a tunable IEF, which facilitates the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers. Herein, a ZnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) S-Scheme heterojunction containing sulfur vacancies (Sv) was successfully synthesized, and its good photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) activity confirmed the feasibility of this strategy. The prepared Sv-ZnS/ZIS exhibits an apparent quantum yield of 19.8 ± 1.0 % at 420 nm and a hydrogen evolution rate of 2912.3 ± 185.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 9.0 and 33.6 times higher than pure ZIS and Sv-ZnS, respectively. Furthermore, the yield of photoreduction CO 2 to CO reaches 2075.7 ± 63.0 μmol g −1 h −1 with a CO selectivity of 93.0 ± 0.8 %. This work provides new sights for the rational design and construction of S-scheme photocatalysts with sulfur vacancies for efficient photocatalysis.

Mycotoxins, formed in lots of foods during the production, processing and transportation processes, are the secondary metabolites of Fusarium genus, Penicillium and Aspergillus. Aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) is considered as one of the most dangerous mycotoxins for human and animals due to its strong carcinogenicity and hepatotoxic effects. Hence, degradation of AFB 1 completely or reduction of AFB 1 to a low degree content has caused much attentions. In this paper, novel ZIF-8/ZnS hollow polyhedral heterostructures were successfully synthesized by sulphurizing ZIF-8 via solvothermal method. The synthesized samples were used as catalysts for AFB 1 degradation under UV light irradiation. All as-synthesized samples were analyzed by XRD , SEM, BET, UV–vis, ESR and so on. The results show that parts of ZIF-8 can be sulphurized by TAA to synthesize ZnS and the ZIF-8 particles were etched to form the hollow structure. The sulphurizing degree of ZIF-8 has great influence on the photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8/ZnS. Compared with ZIF-8/ZnS (50) and ZIF-8/ZnS (150), ZIF-8/ZnS (100) exhibited the best photocatalytic activity and could degrade 98.6 % of AFB 1 . Except that, the reactive species of ZIF-8/ZnS (100) were confirmed to be ·OH and ·O 2 − . This strategy of coupling MOFs with semiconductor provides a facile method to synthesize for catalyst with enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of food pollutants produced by aflatoxins. In recent years, high refractive index polythiourethane materials have attracted increasing attention. In this study, the soft segment part of conventional polyurethane was replaced by ethylenedithiol, and a series of nanocomposite films containing Mercaptoethanol (ME) capped ZnS NPs were prepared by UV curing after the synthesis of the bifunctional linear prepolymer with hydroxyethyl acrylate as capping agent and trifunctional prepolymer with trimethylolpropane triacrylate as sulfhydrylate capping. ZnS NPs were well dispersed in the resin system, and the transmittance of the film decreased with the increase of ZnS content, but it did not float much and still has 80% transmittance at 40%. The addition of ZnS had a significant improvement on the refractive index. The RI of the system without the addition of particles was less than 1.5, the system with 40% was greater than 1.6. It was worth noting that the Abbe number was almost greater than 30, which was in the category of low dispersion.
