Birefringence has been attracting broad attention due to its strong potential for applications in biomedicine and optics, such as biomedical diagnosis, colorimetric sensing, retardant, and polarization encoding. However, engineering architectures with precisely controllable birefringence remains a challenge due to the lack of effective modulation of the localized orientation. Here, by taking advantage of the inherently one-dimensional (1D) anisotropic structure of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), we demonstrate an approach to tune the alignment of CNCs with a well-controllable orientation at localized preciseness, which is in contrast to the previously reported unidirectional/radical orientation of CNC-based birefringent structures. The localized modulation of CNC orientation is facilitated by directing the 1D nanocrystals to align along the template periphery and the migrated three-phase contact line during the evaporation. The resultant CNC films exhibit birefringent extinction patterns under polarized light, in which versatile pattern designs can be obtained by employing templates with different shapes and template arrays with varied layouts. Due to the locally modulated orientation of CNCs, the films indicate “kaleidoscope-like” dynamically transformable designs of the birefringent patterns depending on the polarized angle, which has barely been observed previously. Furthermore, an N-nary encoding system for abundant information storage is demonstrated based on the sunlight-transparent CNC films, but with visible extinction patterns under polarized light, which is promising for encryptions, anticounterfeiting, and imaging, enriching the attractive research area of bio-based photonics.

The direct hydrogenolysis of cellulose represents an attractive and promising route for green polyol production. Designing a catalyst system that could control the selectivity of polyols of this process is highly desirable. In this work, we realized the selectivity-switchable production of ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2-PG) by using Sn species with different valences in combination with Ni catalysts. The combination of Ni/AC and metallic Sn powders exhibited a superior activity toward EG (57.6%) with up to 86.6% total polyol yield, while the combination of Ni/AC and SnO favored the formation of 1,2-PG (32.2%) with a 22.9% yield of EG. The Sn species in NiSn alloy in situ formed from metallic Ni and Sn powders was found to be the active sites for the high selectivity of EG as evidenced by control experiments and characterizations including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray mapping, and 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. The effects of Sn loading, reaction temperature, reaction time, and the concentration of cellulose were investigated for Ni/AC + Sn powders. Because of the formation of NiSn alloy, the Ni–Sn catalyst showed good stability during repeated use. Experimental results disclosed that the Sn species with different valence possessed distinct catalytic functions. Both SnO and the alloyed Sn species could catalyze the retro-aldol condensation of glucose to glycolaldehyde, and meanwhile, SnO was also active for the isomerization of glucose to fructose. Therefore, controlling the glycol products distribution could be realized using SnO or the alloyed Sn species as catalysts.

Stretchable and compressible hydrogels based on natural polymers have received immense considerations for electronics. The feasibility of using pure natural polymer-based hydrogels could be improved if their mechanical behaviors satisfy the requirements of practical applications. Herein, we report highly stretchable (tensile strain ∼126%) and compressible (compression strain ∼80%) cellulose ionic hydrogels (CIHs) among pure natural polymer-based hydrogels including cellulose, chitin, and chitosan via chemical cross-linking based on free radical polymerization of allyl cellulose in NaOH/urea aqueous solution. In addition, the hydrogels have good transparency (transmittance of ∼89% at 550 nm) and ionic conductivity (∼0.16 mS cm–1) and can be worked at −20 °C without freezing and visual loss of transparency. Moreover, the CIHs can serve as reliable and stable strain sensors and have been successfully used to monitor human activities. Significantly, the various properties of hydrogel can be controlled through rationally adjusting the chemically cross-linked density. Our methodology will prove useful in developing the satisfied mechanical and transparent CIHs for a myriad of applications in flexible electronics.

Cholesteric architectures with helicoidal periodicity offer a highly promising biomimetic design paradigm for the development of advanced artificial materials. Furthermore, the integration of these axially symmetric architectures and continuous topological configurations into continuous fibrous systems enables the realization of expanded structural and functional design possibilities. However, the meta-periodicity of lyotropic liquid crystal is typically difficult to preserve during dynamic spinning processes due to its inherent energetic instability. Herein, a simple approach is presented to balance the viscoelasticity of the cholesteric precursor and enable the continuous cholesteric ordered fibrous structures (CLO fibers). The large molecular size and strong excluded volume dynamically stabilize the meta-periodicity. The CLO fibers exhibit exceptional mechanical performance, with ultimate tensile stress reaching up to 25.37 MPa, and Young's modulus reaching up to 152.36 MPa, together with remarkable weavability and unprecedented structural tunability. This study provides critical insights and essential references for the fabrication of length-scale materials platforms with tailored topologies, while broadening the potential applications of photonic materials in intelligent wearables, information storage, and biomedical fields.

Due to its affordability, widespread availability, non-toxicity, biodegradability, and renewability, cellulose is considered a crucial material for addressing the depletion of petroleum resources. In this study, a rotaxane-based supramolecular polymer derived from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was synthesized and combined with cellulose to create a TPU–cellulose composite (TPU-C). This composite was employed as a separator for acrylate-based quasi-solid polymer electrolytes (QPEs). The polymer electrolyte demonstrated a high ionic conductivity of 0.16 mS cm−1at room temperature, a lithium-ion transference number of 0.63, and an electrochemical stability window extending up to 4.7 V. When paired with a LiFePO4(LFP) cathode, the coin cell retained 88.8% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 1 C. A cell assembled with Li and a high-voltage NCM622 cathode maintained a capacity of 65.8% after 100 cycles at 0.3 C. Additionally, the excellent electrochemical performance was analyzed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations to identify the underlying reasons for its outstanding behavior. This study offers new insights into expanding the application potential of cellulose-based composite materials.

As a major carbon resource, carbon dioxide recycling can effectively address issues of the greenhouse effect and carbon resource shortages. Carbon dioxide based polypropylene carbonate (PPC) is a polymer material produced from carbon dioxide and propylene oxide, with advantages in environmental protection and sustainability. However, its relatively low thermal stability severely limits its application prospects. In this study, a novel cellulose acetate grafted carbon dioxide based polypropylene carbonate (CA-DMC-CO 2 ) ultrafiltration membrane was prepared by epoxidation and high-pressure catalysis of cellulose acetate side chains. The molecular weight of CA-DMC-CO 2 was 428,169 Da, and its thermal decomposition temperature reached 365 °C. The introduction of polycarbonate side chains endowed the CA-DMC-CO 2 ultrafiltration membrane with good hydrophilicity and excellent permeability, reaching 115.9 L/m 2 h, which performed better than the CA ultrafiltration membrane. In addition, good hydrophilicity of CA-DMC-CO 2 provided effective anti-fouling performance. This study highlights the potential for developing environmentally friendly and sustainable ultrafiltration membranes for practical applications.

The integration of programmable mechanical properties, dynamically tunable structural color and intrinsic ionic conductivity into a single material system remains a significant challenge. Mimicking the adaptive camouflage of chameleons, we report a conductive and mechanochromic ionogel with exceptional flexibility, realized through a robust post-assembly solvent exchange strategy. A hierarchical Bouligand architecture, derived from the cholesteric self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), serves as a structural scaffold within a polyacrylamide network. The ionic liquids (ILs), acting as internal plasticizers and lubricants, in conjunction with the hierarchical CNC Bouligand architecture, synergistically promote multi-scale energy dissipation, endowing the ionogel with high strength (0.38 MPa), exceptional toughness (900 KJ∙m −3 ) and good fatigue resistance. Significantly, the ionogels feature post-synthetic programmability. Mild thermal treatment or aging promotes partial solvation of the CNCs by the ILs, triggering transition of the ionogel from a tough elastomer to an ultraflexible state capable of sustaining strains up to 2400%. Additionally, the ionogel functions as a dual-mode ionic skin, exhibiting a vivid strain-dependent color response with high sensitivity (1.12 nm·% −1 ) and reliable electrical sensing across a broad temperature range. This design offers a versatile platform for biomimetic skin-like materials where programmable mechano-optical properties and direct visual feedback are essential.

The rise of antibiotic resistance necessitates the development of non-antibiotic antibacterial dressings with high biocompatibility and reliable wound-repair performance. In this work, chitosan/cellulose ether composite antibacterial membranes (CCE-ACM) were fabricated from chitosan, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl cellulose, and further reinforced through sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) cross-linking. Response-surface optimization enabled the construction of a compact phosphodiester-linked network with improved mechanical strength, controlled swelling behavior, and stable moisture regulation. The membranes exhibited excellent cytocompatibility (> 80% viability) and strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , with the optimized CHEPCS formulation showing the most pronounced inhibition. In vivo, CCE-ACM significantly accelerated wound closure, achieving near-complete healing by Day 15 and promoting reduced inflammation, enhanced re-epithelialization, and more mature collagen deposition. These results demonstrate that the optimized CHEPCS membrane integrates effective antibacterial activity, favorable biocompatibility, and enhanced wound-healing performance, representing a promising non-antibiotic dressing for advanced wound care applications.

Cellulose, as an abundant, renewable, and biocompatible material, is an ideal candidate for suture preparation. Yet, traditional cellulose sutures are non-absorbable because humans lack cellulase. Herein, cellulose-based threads were fabricated using cellulose formate (CF) and collagen (optimal weight ratio 1:1) with surface modification by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). By incorporating collagen, the strength and toughness of the CF threads were enhanced to match commercial collagen sutures. Moreover, during physiological degradation, a small amount of released formic acid led to the conversion of 11.6% CF to glucose within 56 days, and glucose can be absorbed and utilized by the human body. This finding demonstrates its remarkable degradability and absorbability in vivo. Meanwhile, this thread offers tunable absorbability (in vitro strength loss > 50% within 21–49 days, by adjusting the polymerization degree and substitution degree of CF), aligning with the definition of absorbable sutures and matching the actual healing time of most wounds. Compared to absorbable collagen sutures, this novel CF-based thread exhibits superior antibacterial properties and comparable biocompatibility with cells and blood. Besides, it causes minimal inflammatory responses and promotes faster wound healing in vivo experiments. Therefore, this green cellulose-based thread shows great potential as an absorbable suture for advanced surgical applications.

Green and energy-free cooling serves as an effective strategy to address the global energy crisis. Radiative and evaporative cooling can be simultaneously achieved by integrating radiative materials and hydrogel into a bilayer system. However, hygroscopic hydrogel may reduce their cooling performance in outdoor environments due to dust contamination, rain erosion, and other factors, which limits their widespread application.Herein, based on the principle of interface design, a novel type of radiative/evaporative cooling bilayer is proposed, featuring an upper layer of regenerated cellulose (RC) foam and the lower layer of hydrogel for efficient passive cooling. The RC foam coated with SiO 2 and then encapsulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS/SiO 2 @RC) has high visible reflectance (96%), high mid-infrared emissivity (90%), low thermal conductivity (0.044 W m −1 K −1 ) and exceptional hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 146°). After two weeks of outdoor exposure, the PDMS/SiO 2 @RC maintains a high visible reflectivity of 95%, demonstrating superior long-term cooling stability. By synergistically integrating radiative cooling, evaporative cooling, and thermal insulation, the bilayer cooler achieves a maximum cooling effect exceeding 15 °C under 1000 W m −2 solar irradiance. Owing to its low cost and facile fabrication, this bilayer system presents a promising pathway for passive cooling applications.

Despite the widespread clinical use of lidocaine, conventional delivery systems (e.g., injections, patches) suffer from rapid drug release (<24 h duration). To address this limitation, this study developed a nanosilica-reinforced carboxymethyl cellulose/polyacrylamide (CMC/PAM/SiO 2 ) hydrogel for sustained lidocaine delivery. A sol-gel method combined with free radical polymerization constructed a three-dimensional network, where nano-SiO 2 (0–1.00 g loading) served as multifunctional crosslinkers to enhance mechanical strength (117 kPa tensile strength, 588% increase vs. pure PAM) and pore density (400% equilibrium swelling ratio). Characterizations of CMC/PAM/SiO 2 confirmed homogeneous SiO 2 dispersion and hydrogen bonding between Si–OH and polymer groups (-COO − /-CONH 2 ). In vitro drug release experiments demonstrated that the drug loading of lidocaine in the composite hydrogel achieved a cumulative release rate of 91.48% within 72 h, which conformed to the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model, indicating a synergistic effect of diffusion and swelling mechanisms. Nano-SiO 2 doping at 1.00 g optimized antibacterial performance (2.16-fold enhancement against E. coli vs. PAM) while maintaining high water retention (67% after 24 h). This mechanically robust platform provides slow release of lidocaine with integrated antibacterial functionality, demonstrating significant potential for extended-duration local anesthesia.

In the present work, a novel composite material formed by bacterial cellulose (BC) networks and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets was synthesized by a sonochemical method. The BC and as-prepared BC/GO composites were characterized by several techniques including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, thermogravimetric analyses (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). SEM images showed that the morphologies of composites became more compact than BC. FTIR, UV, TG and XRD confirmed the existence of GO in the composites. Moreover, HEK 293 cells were cultivated, and both the biocompatibility of the materials and the cell viability were demonstrated. Meanwhile, the anti-bacterial performances of BC/GO composites were evaluated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), which frequently cause medically associated infections. The experimental results showed that the BC/GO composites have excellent anti-bacterial activities, thus confirming its utility as a potential biomaterial in biomedical applications. Furthermore, the anti-bacterial behavior had been well explained by the extended DLVO theory.
