Release of organic sulfur as sulfur-containing gases during low temperature pyrolysis of sewage sludge

Shuai Liu,Mengmeng Wei,Yu Qiao,Zhenle Yang,Ben Gui,Yun Yu,Minghou Xu

This study reports the release of five sulfur-containing odorants (H 2 S, SO 2 , COS, CS 2 and CH 3 SH) during the pyrolysis of sewage sludge. Pyrolysis experiments using both raw sewage sludge and seven sludge samples loaded with various organic sulfur compounds were performed to determine the effects of the type of organic sulfur on the release of sulfur-containing gases. It was observed that the formation of H 2 S, the predominant odorant, significantly increases at temperatures above 150   °C. Aliphatic and aromatic sulfur compounds were found to be the two main organic sulfur sources for the release of sulfur-containing gases. The release of sulfur-containing gases from aliphatic sulfur greatly increases at 250   °C, whereas significant sulfur-containing gases are released from aromatic sulfur at relatively high temperatures of 350–450   °C. It was also observed that the presence of sulphonic acid and thiophene in sludge does not significantly affect the release of sulfur-containing gases.

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose and Biomass to Selectively Produce Levoglucosenone Using Activated Carbon Catalyst

Xiao-ning Ye,Qiang Lu,Xin Wang,Hao-qiang Guo,Min-shu Cui,Chang-qing Dong,Yong-ping Yang

Activated carbon (AC) prepared by chemical activation with H3PO4 (named AC-P) was employed for catalytic fast pyrolysis of cellulose and biomass to selectively produce levoglucosenone (LGO). The catalytic pyrolysis behaviors and product distributions were revealed via both analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and lab-scale experiments. Moreover, the performance of AC-P catalyst was compared with previously reported strong acid catalysts and other ACs prepared by different activation methods. In addition, reusability and stability of the AC-P catalyst have been examined via recycling experiments. The results indicated that the AC-P catalyst was effective for selectively preparing LGO from both cellulose and biomass and performed better than other catalysts. Among the three biomass materials (pine wood, poplar wood, and bagasse), pine wood showed the best selectivity for producing LGO. The maximal LGO yields of 18.1 and 9.1 wt % were obtained from cellulose and pine wood, respectively, in Py-GC/MS experiments under a catalyst-to-feedstock ratio of 1:3 at 300 °C, whereas the lab-scale setup obtained the highest LGO yields of 14.7 and 7.8 wt % from cellulose and pine wood with selectivities of 76.3 and 43.0%, respectively, based on organic liquid products. Furthermore, granular AC-P catalyst exhibited good reusability and stability in the recycling experiments. Stable yields of LGO above 12.5 wt % from cellulose were obtained in six consecutive runs without any regeneration of the recycled granular AC-P catalyst.

Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Bagasse Using Activated Carbon Catalyst to Selectively Produce 4-Ethyl Phenol

Qiang Lu,Xiao-ning Ye,Zhi-bo Zhang,Min-Shu Cui,Hao-qiang Guo,Wei Qi,Chang-qing Dong,Yong-ping Yang

Fast pyrolysis of bagasse catalyzed by activated carbon (AC) at low temperatures offered a new and promising way to produce the valuable 4-ethyl phenol (4-EP) compound in high selectivity. In this study, the technique of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was first applied to investigate several factors on the 4-EP production, including biomass type, fast pyrolysis temperature, AC-to-bagasse ratio, and catalytic pattern (in situ or ex situ catalysis). Moreover, fast pyrolysis experiments by using AC catalyst were conducted in a lab-scale setup to quantitatively determine the pyrolytic products. The experimental results indicated that, among these five herbaceous biomass materials, bagasse was the best material to produce 4-vinylphenol (4-VP) from the noncatalytic process and 4-EP from the catalytic fast pyrolysis process, respectively. 4-VP and its precursors could be catalytically hydrogenated into 4-EP with high selectivity under the catalysis of AC catalyst. Both catalytic pyrolysis temperature and AC-to-bagasse ratio affected the 4-EP selectivity significantly, whereas the catalytic pattern had minor effects on the 4-EP production. The highest yield of 4-EP from bagasse in Py-GC/MS experiments was 2.13 wt %, obtained at the pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C and AC-to-bagasse ratio of 4 from the in situ catalytic pattern. Moreover, lab-scale fast pyrolysis of bagasse catalyzed by AC catalyst obtained the maximal 4-EP yield of 2.49 wt %, with the selectivity of 10.71%.

Structural Characterization and Pyrolysis Behavior of Cellulose and Hemicellulose Isolated from Softwood Pinus armandii Franch

Shurong Wang,Haizhou Lin,Li Zhang,Gongxin Dai,Yuan Zhao,Xiaoliu Wang,Bin Ru

Cellulose and hemicellulose were isolated directly from softwood Pinus armandii Franch by the alkali method for pyrolysis mechanism study. Structural characterization based on FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR showed that the hemicellulose was mainly composed of galactoglucomannan and arabinoxylan with abundant branches, while the cellulose was mainly composed of β-1,4-glucan with a few residual hemicellulose fragments. Pyrolysis of extracted cellulose showed high char yield due to the lower crystallinity. Hemicellulose pyrolysis showed a shoulder peak at low temperature and high char yield because of its abundant branches. A double-Gaussian distributed activation energy model was introduced for pyrolysis kinetics analysis. The devolatilization process for both cellulose and hemicellulose was dominated by a parallel decomposition reaction pathway. The distributions of their pyrolysis products were analyzed by Py-GC/MS. It is suggested that the utilization of isolated sample as model compound could give a better understanding of the biomass pyrolysis mechanism.

Catalytic conversion of lignin pyrolysis model compound- guaiacol and its kinetic model including coke formation

Zhang Huiyan,Wang Yun,Shao Shanshan,Xiao Rui

Lignin is the most difficult to be converted and most easy coking component in biomass catalytic pyrolysis to high-value liquid fuels and chemicals. Catalytic conversion of guaiacol as a lignin model compound was conducted in a fixed-bed reactor over ZSM-5 to investigate its conversion and coking behaviors. The effects of temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) and partial pressure on product distribution were studied. The results show the maximum aromatic carbon yield of 28.55% was obtained at temperature of 650 °C, WHSV of 8 h −1 and partial pressure of 2.38 kPa, while the coke carbon yield was 19.55%. The reaction pathway was speculated to be removing methoxy group to form phenols with further aromatization to form aromatics. The amount of coke increased with increasing reaction time. The surface area and acidity of catalysts declined as coke formed on the acid sites and blocked the pore channels, which led to the decrease of aromatic yields. Finally, a kinetic model of guaiacol catalytic conversion considering coke deposition was built based on the above reaction pathway to properly predict product distribution. The experimental and model predicting data agreed well. The correlation coefficient of all equations were all higher than 0.90.

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of waste vegetable oil and high density polyethylene for hydrocarbon fuel production

Yunpu Wang,Leilei Dai,Liangliang Fan,Leipeng Cao,Yue Zhou,Yunfeng Zhao,Yuhuan Liu,Roger Ruan

In this study, a ZrO 2 -based polycrystalline ceramic foam catalyst was prepared and used in catalytic co-pyrolysis of waste vegetable oil and high density polyethylene (HDPE) for hydrocarbon fuel production. The effects of pyrolysis temperature, catalyst dosage, and HDPE to waste vegetable oil ratio on the product distribution and hydrocarbon fuel composition were examined. Experimental results indicate that the maximum hydrocarbon fuel yield of 63.1   wt. % was obtained at 430   °C, and the oxygenates were rarely detected in the hydrocarbon fuel. The hydrocarbon fuel yield increased when the catalyst was used. At the catalyst dosage of 15   wt.%, the proportion of alkanes in the hydrocarbon fuel reached 97.85   wt.%, which greatly simplified the fuel composition and improved the fuel quality. With the augment of HDPE to waste vegetable oil ratio, the hydrocarbon fuel yield monotonously increased. At the HDPE to waste vegetable oil ratio of 1:1, the maximum proportion (97.85   wt.%) of alkanes was obtained. Moreover, the properties of hydrocarbon fuel were superior to biodiesel and 0 # diesel due to higher calorific value, better low-temperature low fluidity, and lower density and viscosity.

Detection of nanoplastics released from consumer plastic food containers by electromagnetic heating pyrolysis mass spectrometry

Ke Shi,Hong Zhang,Jikun Gao,Jiaqian Zhang,Xiangnan Zhang,Guangfeng Kan,Jie Jiang

Nanoplastics released from consumer plastic food containers are emerging environmental pollutants and directly ingested as part of the diet. However, quantification methods for nanoplastics are still lacking. Herein, a rapid identification and mass quantification approach was developed for nanoplastics analysis by combining electromagnetic heating with pyrolysis mass spectrometry (Eh-Py-MS). The pyrolysis products directly entered into the MS, which omits the gas phase separation process and shortens the detection time. A compact pyrolysis chamber was used and this increased the sample transfer efficiency and lowered power requirement. The operational parameters were systematically examined. The influence of nanoplastic size, additive, humic acid, and aging on detection was investigated, and it was concluded that environmental factors (humic acid, aging) and plastic properties (size, additives) did not influence the detection. The developed chamber showed that the limit of detection of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics was 15.72 ng. Several typical food packages were demonstrated with satisfactory recovery rates (87.5–110%) and precision (RSD ≤11.36%). These results suggested that the consumer plastic food containers are a significant source of direct exposure to nanoplastics in humans from the environment.

Evolution of heavy components in bio-oil during oxidative pyrolysis of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin

Yimin Xiong,Xuepeng Wang,Wei Deng,Peiyong Ma,Kai Xu,Jun Xu,Long Jiang,Yi Wang,Sheng Su,Jianlan Li,Song Hu,Jun Xiang

Biomass oxidative pyrolysis introduces restricted oxygen into the reaction zone, realizing autothermal pyrolysis to address the heat supply challenges inherent in large-scale applications. However, heavy components (>200 Da) in bio-oil are critical precursors that lead to coke formation upon heating, which hinders the utilization of bio-oil. In this study, the conventional and oxidative pyrolysis experiments of cellulose, hemicellulose , and lignin in a fix-bed reactor were conducted at temperatures ranging from 300 °C to 800 °C, aiming to investigate the evolution of heavy components in bio-oil during biomass oxidative pyrolysis. The results showed that the addition of oxygen promoted the generation of bio-oil. Compared to conventional pyrolysis, the addition of oxygen mostly increased the yields of cellulose-oil, hemicellulose-oil, and lignin-oil by 28.21 %, 10.94 %, and 16.84 %, respectively. Further comprehensive analysis revealed that oxygen promoted the depolymerization of three components at a lower temperature range (< 500 °C). With increasing temperatures, oxygen enhanced the polymerization of volatiles from cellulose and lignin, where oxygen, acting as a binder, promoted the generation of phenolic compounds of heavy components in lignin-oil. Conversely, as the temperature increased, oxygen enhanced the oxidative decomposition of volatiles from hemicellulose, inhibiting the generation of heavy components in hemicellulose-oil. To sum up, this study presented a global evolution route of heavy components in bio-oil during oxidative pyrolysis of three components.

Identifying and Analyzing the Microplastics in Human Aqueous Humor by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry.

Kaiyun Zhang,Lei Yu,Laiqiang Qu,Na Hui,Li Chen,Jiameng Wang,Hong Yan

Microplastics (MPs), an emerging global pollutant, pose potential risks to human health and have garnered increasing attention. Previous research has identified MPs in various human tissues and organs, but not in the aqueous humor of the eyes. This study used pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) to explore MPs in aqueous humor. Five types of MPs—polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polyamide 66 (PA66), and polystyrene (PS)—were found, with PE and PVC being most common. PP was more prevalent in children, while PA66 was more common in adults. MPs abundance generally followed the trend: adults > children > elders among age groups, and females > males between gender groups. Notably, this study is the first to confirm MPs in human aqueous humor, providing a foundation for future research on their impact on intraocular health and enhancing our understanding of the MPs’ body distribution.

Intrinsic structure-function connections of carbon-encapsulated nanoscale zero-valent-iron using various pyrolysis atmospheres

Lu Yang,Xiaoying Jin,Zuliang Chen

Carbon-encapsulated nanoscale zero-valent-iron (C@Fe 0 ) derived from plant-based extracts has been the subject of growing interest due to its environmental friendliness. However, the effects of various pyrolysis atmospheres on the structure-function connections of C@Fe 0 are still unclear. In this study, three pyrolytic atmospheres, namely Air, N 2 , and 5% H 2 /Ar were selected to fabricate X-C@Fe 0 (X represented as A, N, H) for removing 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (TCP), and the relationships between their structures and functions were demonstrated. The N-C@Fe 0 with improved hydrophobicity exhibited superior TCP adsorptive performance compared to H-C@Fe 0 and A-C@Fe 0 . Apart from this, N-C@Fe 0 effectively reduced TCP through dechlorination, this process achieved 25.9% dichlorination efficiency, and in turn alleviated products toxicity. Electrochemical tests and density functional theory calculations showed that the substitution of nitrogen with carbon in N-C@Fe 0 elevated the Fe- d band center and enhanced the hybridization between Fe-3 d and C-2 p orbital, which collectively promoted the dichlorination of TCP. This study will provide practical guideline for improving the intrinsic activity of iron-carbon materials using pyrolytic atmosphere engineering.

Investigation of the mechanism and interaction of nitrogen conversion during lignin/glutamic acid co-pyrolysis

Hong Tian,Xuan Huang,Bin Zhao,Huang Zhang,Shan Cheng,Lei Liu

Biomass pyrolysis has the potential to be transformed into valuable chemicals and fuels. Nitrogenous chemicals exert a substantial influence on the quality of bio-oil. Studying the impact of lignin on the transformation of nitrogen-containing elements in biomass during biomass pyrolysis is crucial for achieving efficient and effective utilization of biomass resources. In this study, tube furnace experiments, thermogravimetric infrared experiments (TG-FTIR), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were used to investigate the interactions of typical lignins (vanillin and syringol), nitrogenous components (glutamic acid), and the effect of lignin on the pyrolysis gas release of glutamic acid and the pyrolysis products during the co-pyrolysis process. In addition, the impact of lignin on the effect of pyrrolidone formation from glutamic acid was investigated in this study in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. The experimental findings demonstrated that the co-pyrolysis of lignin and glutamic acid resulted in a reduction in the pyrolysis temperature. This reduction facilitated the release of HCN, NH 3 , and CO 2 while notably impeding the formation of nitrogen-containing compounds in the oil. The nitrogen concentration in the pyrolysis oil declined from 97 % to a range of 51.06–79.63 %, and the inhibitory impact decreased as the pyrolysis temperature increased. At an elevated pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C, lignin facilitated the decarboxylation process of glutamic acid, resulting in an increased production of pyrrolidone.Simulation results demonstrated that the lowest energy barrier paths were the dehydration condensation process and the Maillard reaction involving glutamic acid and lignin and their pyrolysis intermediates, with a particular competitive connection between the two pathways. The results explained the interaction mechanism between the two pyrolysis products and provided a fundamental theoretical basis for nitrogen conversion in biomass pyrolysis.

Iron-doped carbon nanotubes via microwave shock: Recyclability in polypropylene pyrolysis for ORR catalyst manufacturing

Xi Shen,Zhenyu Zhao,Hong Li,Xin Gao

The recycling and upcycling of waste plastics into high-value products by pyrolysis is a critical challenge caused by its time/energy-consuming problems, which can be overcome by employing microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis due to its rapid pyrolysis rates and high product yields. This study presents a facile method for the synthesis of catalysts for microwave-assisted pyrolysis of waste plastics, utilizing the pyrolytic products as raw materials. In this case, a microwave thermal shock strategy is developed to efficiently anchor iron nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This method recycles a portion of pyrolysis products back into the catalyst pool for plastic transformation into new CNTs, reducing the consumption for preparing additional catalysts. The precursors exposed to 50 W microwave irradiation reaches above 2000 °C within seconds, allowing Fe nanoparticles to be uniformly impregnated within the carbon nanotube matrix. The formed iron-doped CNTs shows high activity for microwave-assisted pyrolysis, generating CNTs with D/G ratios at 0.31. The recycling and reconstruction of CNTs after multiple pyrolysis form a cross-lined network structure, which facilitates electron transition and can be utilized for fabricating electrocatalysts. Nitrogen doping further improves the onset potential to 0.923 V vs. RHE, making them viable candidates for electrocatalytic applications in oxygen reduction reactions. In summary, our findings demonstrate the feasibility of this approach to reactive pyrolysis products that serve as catalysis for microwave-assisted pyrolysis, with the potential to reduce volatile organic compound emissions and capital expenditure in catalyst preparation, offering a greener and more efficient pathway for plastic waste management and catalyst production.
