Polymerization of isoprene and butadiene with unparalleled stereoselectivity catalysed by rare-earth metal cationic species bearing a novel tridentate ligand

Xiuling Wang,Yang Wang,Zhonglei Qin,Liying Shen,Xiaochao Shi

Rare-earth metal complexes bearing a novel tridentate ligand with a phenylthiol sidearm have been synthesized. The corresponding rare-earth metal cationic species, with the exception of the lutetium-based complex, showed unparalleled stereoselectivity in the polymerization of isoprene and butadiene to respectively produce cis-1,4-polyisoprene and trans-1,4-polybutadiene. The unusual reactivity ratio in the yttrium-catalyzed copolymerization of isoprene and butadiene (rIP = 2.61 and rBD = 0.57) suggested that the generated copolymer possessed a unique sequence distribution. The excellent livingness of the reactions enabled the yttrium-based catalytic system to produce isoprene-butadiene block copolymers, which could be completely hydrogenated to serve as thermoplastic elastomers. Stress–strain experiments and hysteresis testing revealed the pivotal role that the sequence length plays in determining the mechanical properties of the hydrogenated copolymers.

Polybutadiene polyurethane acrylate photosensitive resin and its application in 3D printing

Hang Ning,Shaoyun Chen,Yan'e Liu,Bo Qu,Yanyu Zheng,Xiaoying Liu,Wenjie Li,Rui Wang,Nairong Chen,Dongxian Zhuo

High-performance resins that can withstand temperature changes are required to expand the application potential of additive manufacturing (3D printing) in response to increasing demand from various fields. In this study, a novel 3D-printing polybutadiene polyurethane acrylate photosensitive resin named HTPBMA was prepared by mixing hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) as the base material with other active diluent monomers and photoinitiators, including hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). The resulting resins exhibited good rheological properties and rapid photocuring ability, depending on the type and proportion of diluent monomer. In particular, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the sample with a 65:35 HTPBMA:HPMA ratio at −25 °C were 32.9 MPa and 246.1%, respectively, being 2.13 and 1.58 times the values at room temperature, respectively. These results indicate that HTPBMA exhibits excellent low-temperature performance and physical properties. The enhancement mechanism can likely be attributed to introducing of a flexible carbon chain as well as increased cross-linking density (υ e ). These advantages suggest that the novel photosensitive resin designed and prepared in this study can be used for photocuring 3D printing and maintain excellent performance under extreme climatic conditions. Thus, the proposed HTPBMA has broad application prospects in aerospace and materials science, especially in shoe materials and tires.

Enhanced mechanical and dielectric properties of an epoxy resin modified with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene

Yujia Kou,Wenying Zhou,Bo Li,Lina Dong,Yu-E Duan,Qianwen Hou,Xiangrong Liu,Huiwu Cai,Qingguo Chen,Zhi-Min Dang

Epoxy (EP) modified with nonpolar rubbers have the potential to achieve a concurrent improvement in mechanical and dielectric properties , when the EP-rubber interface is properly manipulated. Here we investigate rubber toughened EP based on a non-polar hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), and a coupling agent, dimer fatty acid diisocyanate (DDI), in which the rubber is covalently bonded to the epoxy. The mechanical and dielectric properties can be improved with the addition of HTPB and are maximized at 15 phr of elastomer inclusion. The enhanced mechanical toughness is attributed to the extensive shear yielding induced by a large amount of uniformly dispersed rubber particles; the same morphology can also combine the good insulating properties of HTPB and dielectrically favorable interfaces. These facts along with the reduced dielectric constant and loss for the modified EP suggest that the HTPB-DDI-EP can be used as a promising insulating packaging material for microelectronic applications.

Robust and Highly Stretchable UV-Curable Rubber/Polyurethane-Based Resins Reinforced with Photocurable Cellulose Acetate

Bin Yang,Kun Wang,Xiaoming Shi,Yongxian Zhao,Junyi Chen

Tough and stretchable elastomeric resins are useful materials, particularly for coatings and additive manufacturing, which constructs 3D objects through the successive deposition of curable materials. Though elastomeric resins are valued for their flexibility and mechanical resilience, remain limited in availability. In this work, a photocurable resin capable of producing highly elastic material is designed and synthesized. The resin is derived from polybutadiene-based thermoset polyurethane, which is degraded and functionalized through olefin cross-metathesis reaction. The elastomeric resin can be efficiently cured by UV light, affording robust elastomers with an excellent elongation rate (>1300%). The study reveals that the molecular architecture of the resin plays an important role in UV curing and the resulting elastomer properties. Model studies suggest the fragment architecture within the resin prevents shrinkage during UV-curing, which is a common and undesired phenomenon for photocurable elastomers. Moreover, the elastomeric resin's physical properties are tuned by incorporating a cellulose-based reinforcing component (CA-MA) and systematically adjusting the formulation. Tensile testing indicated that the addition of CA-MA significantly enhanced the modulus and toughness (46 MJ m −3 ) of the UV cured elastomer. Finally, the resin is used as a component in SLA-based 3D printing transforming the elastomeric resin into complex 3D structures.

Rapid electrothermal upcycling hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) polluted distillation residue into turbostratic graphene for enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption

Tong Chen,Yunxiao Zhao,Hanyang Sun,Xinyu Niu,Pei Li,Yan Xia,Xiaoqing Lin,Xiaodong Li,Ying Wang,Jianhua Yan,Chen Sun

The trichloroethylene production industry generates high-boiling-point solid residues during rectification, which contain high concentrations of chlorinated contaminants, particularly hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD). Traditionally, these distillation residues are managed through co-incineration or landfilling, leading to environmental and economic challenges. In this study, we present a rapid and environmentally friendly electrothermal approach for both detoxifying and upcycling distillation residue into graphene-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. By employing a DC power pulse discharge with a 10 s duration, we achieved over 99 % HCBD degradation efficiency. Characterization results indicate that the thermal shock transforms the distillation residue into high-value turbostratic pulse graphene (tPG). This tPG, featuring a unique structure, demonstrates substantial potential as an EMW absorber, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.9 GHz and a reflection loss of −42.0 dB at a minimal matching thickness of 1.6 mm. The method offers a sustainable, cost-effective solution for hazardous waste management, combining rapid processing with high-value material production.

A comparative study on wear behavior and mechanism of styrene butadiene rubber under dry and wet conditions

Y.P. Wu,Y. Zhou,J.L. Li,H.D. Zhou,J.M. Chen,H.C. Zhao

As the main component of the tire treads, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used to make tire tread for cars in the rubber industry; understanding the friction and wear properties of tire tread rubber is important to improve the safety of the cars. This study aimed to investigate the tribological properties and wear mechanism of SBR under dry and wet conditions; an improved commercial block-on-ring friction testing machine was used to conduct sliding wear tests between SBR and marble block. The friction coefficients , wear rates and wear debris were analyzed under dry and wet conditions in detail. In addition, the contribution of adhesion and hysteresis components to friction coefficient that originated from the changes of loading was discussed. The results indicated that the applied loads have a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of the SBR composites. Under the condition of dry friction , wear losses increased with the increasing load and the main wear mechanism is both severe adhesive and abrasive wear ; under the condition of water existence, the applied loads would not affect the wear losses, and the wear mechanism is abrasive wear. The knowledge gained in this study is anticipated to provide the theoretical data for a wear theory study of SBR tire tread and can be used for the optimization of designing higher performance tire treads.

A route to selectively increase the microporous structure of zeolite and its optimization in the ethanol to butadiene reaction

Tian Ye,Yuhao Bai,Kewei Wang,Weijie Hu,Meng Zhang,Li-Ming Wu

Control over the pore structure of zeolite is very important, so researchers are trying to regulate the pore structure of zeolite through various methods to endow it with better performance in industrial applications. Here, a confined etching route that could selectively increase the microporous structure of zeolite is developed using ethanol/amine buffer solution. Ethanol is introduced into an aqueous amine solution, where it could decrease the migration rate and concentration of hydroxyl ions which can etch the framework atoms of zeolite to fabricate various porous structures, consequently developing a confined etching route that could selectively increase the microporous structure of zeolite, unlike conventional approaches that generally increase mesoporous and macroporous architectures. In addition, ethanol enhances the solubility of amine in water, and a buffer solution (ethanol/amine) is formed, which is able to release hydroxyl ions continuously. Based on the above confined etching route, a micropore-increased beta crystal is synthesized and when used as a carrier in ZnLaY/beta catalysts, it achieves excellent ethanol conversion of 96.04% and butadiene selectivity of 64.22% in 20 h time-on-stream in an ethanol to butadiene reaction. Keywords: Ethanol; Confined etching route; Micropore-increased; Beta zeolite; Ethanol to butadiene.

Study of Ethanol/Acetaldehyde to 1,3-Butadiene Over MgO–SiO2 Catalyst: Comparative Investigation of Deactivation Behaviour Due to Carbon Deposition

Zhang Minhua,Qin Yu’nan,Tan Xuechao,Wang Lingtao,Yu Yingzhe,Jiang Haoxi

Abstract In this paper, the MgO–SiO 2 catalyst was prepared with the deposition–precipitation method, which was used to catalyse the conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene through a two-step process. The carbon deposition deactivation of the catalyst was mainly caused by that the carbon species occupied the acid-basic active sites on the catalyst surface. The carbon deposition mainly includes chain alkanes and aromatic compounds from outer to inner layers, and its site was mainly MgSiO 3 , followed by MgO, while SiO 2 showed weak carbon deposition ability. Trace of Atomically Dispersed Pd Enables Unprecedented Butadiene Semihydrogenation Performance Over Copper Catalyst

Zhao Wang,Hao Yuan,Jian Tao,Shu-Lin Liu,Ying Hong,Zhi-Yi Hu,Jian Zhang,Bao-Lian Su

Semihydrogenation plays a key role in industrial hydrorefining of light alkenes, with a market above 400 billion by 2027. The high cost of commercial palladium-based catalysts strongly calls for innovation but with great challenges. Herein, copper nanoparticles decorated with a minimized ppm of Pd are developed through a chemical plating process to integrate the catalytic advantages of copper and palladium for achieving maximized catalysis in the semihydrogenation of a fatal impurity of butadiene in alkene feedstocks. The developed Pd–Cu catalyst (i.e., 114 ppm of Pd in Pd0.0033Cu1/TiO2) exhibits an unprecedented catalytic performance superior to commercial Pd/Al2O3, with 100% butene selectivity above 90% of butadiene conversion over 130 h on stream at 90 °C. Further exploration reveals that the atomically dispersed Pd on Cu nanoparticles, obtained at ultralow ppm levels of Pd loading, induces a hidden but critical H2 trap, which concentrates H2 on the Pd site for further H2 dissociation that offers intermediate hydrogen atoms to the tandem butadiene semihydrogenation over the third layer of Cu atoms neighboring Pd through hydrogen spillover. Moreover, a threshold on Pd density was identified at Pd/Cu surficial atomic ratio of 1/138 (i.e., Pd0.0033Cu1/TiO2) for maximizing butadiene semihydrogenation performance, based on an extreme collaboration between Pd for H2 dissociation and Cu for butadiene hydrogenation. This work provides important guidance for developing noble metal-saving catalysts in industrial applications.

Random Terpolymer of Carbon Dioxide, Butadiene and Epoxides: Synthesis, Functionalization and Degradability

Zi Wang,Wuyi Zheng,Sicong Yue,Kaihao Chen,Jun Ling,Xufeng Ni

Comprehensive Summary The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as a C1 feedstock is consistently attractive, especially in the preparation of sustainable polymeric materials. In this contribution, a terpolymer of CO 2 , 1,3-butadiene (BD) and epoxide is synthesized by scandium triflate catalyzed cationic ring-opening copolymerization of α -ethylidene- δ -vinyl- δ -valerolactone (EVL), an intermediate derived from CO 2 and BD, with epoxides. The obtained terpolymer with a CO 2 content of 22 mol% has a number-average molecular weight ( M n ) up to 7.8 kg/mol and a dispersity ( Đ ) of 2.4. The reactivity ratios of EVL and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) are determined as 0.01 and 1.07, respectively, suggesting random characteristic of the terpolymer. The preserved C=C double bonds from BD allow for the further modification of the terpolymer by photoinitiated crosslinking. The yielded networks are fluorescent and degradable. This method offers enhanced versatility to the synthesis and additional functionalization of CO 2 -based polymers.

Metathetic degradation of waste vulcanized emulsion type butadiene-based rubber

Changou Pan,Zhirong Shi,Ruochen Zhang,Peng Liu

Metathetic degradation has been recognized as promising strategy for the treatment of waste vulcanized rubbers as a Waste-to-Resources approach, not only eliminating the pollution but also recycling as resources. However, it was mainly used for the treatment of the waste vulcanized natural rubber, which contains plentiful cis -1,4- structure. Despite of a much higher consumption of the emulsion type butadiene-based rubbers than natural rubber, there was no report on the metathetic degradation of the waste vulcanized emulsion type butadiene-based rubbers due to their less cis -1,4- unit, although the metathetic functionalization of the nonvulcanized emulsion type butadiene-based rubbers have been well reported. Here, the metathetic degradation of waste vulcanized emulsion type butadiene-based rubber was explored with nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) glove as a model. Different from the metathetic degradation of waste vulcanized natural rubber via only cross metathesis between cis -1,4-structure and the chain transfer agent (CTA), the ring closing metathesis between the adjacent cis -1,4-structure and 1,2-structure also occurred in the metathetic degradation of waste vulcanized NBR. It is expected to open the door for the Waste-to-Resources approach of all waste vulcanized emulsion type diene-based rubbers.

Effect of interaction enhancement on rheological response of polypropylene /polybutadiene blend composites

Yuguang Liu,Bo Tian,Xinyang Liu

Enhancement interaction between polybutadiene (PB) nanoparticle and polypropylene (PP) matrix by grafts via hydrogen bonding was verified and characterized by dynamic rheological analysis. The introduction of acrylamide (AM) facilitated PB uniform distribution in PP and strengthened interfacial interaction. The correlated structure based on H-bonding interaction leading to the viscoelastic nonlinearity, which restricted polymer relaxation and exhibited different rheological responses. The formation of correlated structure is an energetically favorable process driven by enthalpy, while the dynamics of construction is controlled by diffusion of the binding groups correspondingly, thus, the reconstruction and recoverability depend on the thermodynamic equilibrium distorted by either the shearing or the temperature. Therefore, the recovery ratio increases from 77.31%, 96.53%, to 98.87%, for the blend with identical composition, when increment of temperature from 180, 200–220 °C, is attributed to relaxation enhancement for both the decrement of local viscosity and the acceleration of diffusion.
