The photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance of Si-based PEC devices is usually restricted by low stability and weak photogenerated carrier transport ability. Herein, a micropyramid array structure (p-SiMPs)/p-Cu2O/PhC2Cu/Pt photocathode device with a p-p-n heterojunction structure is developed. In this tandem PEC device, a p-p heterojunction of p-SiMPs/p-Cu2O is achieved, endowing a higher interface electric field and stronger energy of photoinduced electrons for PEC water reduction. In addition, a stable n-type PhC2Cu protective layer is prepared on the surface of the PEC device by the photoassisted polymerization method, which can improve the stability of PEC water reduction largely. After Pt cocatalytic layer deposition, the p-SiMPs/p-Cu2O/PhC2Cu/Pt tandem photocathode can achieve a saturation photocurrent density of −30 mA/cm2 at −0.9 V (vs RHE) and a photocurrent threshold voltage of −0.1 V for water reduction. This work provides a silicon-based p-p-n heterojunction tandem structure for the PEC water splitting; meanwhile, it indicates that PhC2Cu is a potential material to improve the stability of silicon-based PEC devices.

Iron vanadate (FeVO4) is a promising photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting because of its unique electronic band structure, in particular the bandgap of 2.1 eV. However, its PEC performance is limited by the charge recombination at transparent conducting substrate/photoanode interface. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of an ultrathin (1.1 nm) TiO2 layer between FTO and an FeVO4 photoanode by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology can well address the issue of interfacial charge recombination, this is because the large valence band offset between TiO2 and FeVO4 can effectively suppress back hole transfer and subsequently improve charge separation. As expected, the modified photoanode exhibited an enhanced PEC water splitting performance. We believe that the strategy of fabricating an ultrathin TiO2 interfacial layer as a hole blocking barrier can also benefit other photoanodes.

To achieve highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, great efforts have been dedicated to develop various photoelectrode materials in pure water electrolytes. Recently, some studies are turning to hydrogen production from seawater or wastewater, to save valuable freshwater resources and make waste profitable. Here, we fabricate one-dimensional SnO2@BiVO4 core–shell nanorod arrays decorated with cobalt-phosphate cocatalyst (1D SnO2@BiVO4/Co-Pi NRAs), which show efficient charge separation and transport properties due to the rational design of conducting core-layer and introduction of the cocatalyst. The as-obtained SnO2@BiVO4/Co-Pi photoanodes exhibit largely enhanced PEC water oxidation performance: the maximum photocurrent density of 2.63 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE is 6.58 times higher than that of pristine BiVO4 films (∼0.40 mA cm−2). Moreover, the ternary photoanode exhibits promising PEC performance for urea oxidation, giving rise to a current density of 3.44 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE in a neutral urea electrolyte. This work presents a sunlight-driven, eco-friendly and sustainable method to produce hydrogen and simultaneously treat urea-rich wastewater.

In this study, we fabricated TiO 2 nanorod arrays (TiO 2 ), which were decorated with AgVO 3 quantum dots (QDs) on and a layer of V 2 O 5 film, forming a heterojunction material for removal pollutants and photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The AgVO 3 /V 2 O 5 -TiO 2 nanorod arrays (AgVO 3 /V 2 O 5 -TiO 2 ) synthesized by the secondary hydrothermal method were grown on conductive glass to form one-dimensional (1D) nanorod and p-n junction structures. Through experimental characterisation and testing, optical, morphological photocatalysis and PEC characteristics of the materials were measured and studied. The TiO 2 modified with AgVO 3 and V 2 O 5 can significantly improve the visible light optical absorption, the reduce the electron-hole pair binding rate and shorten the band gap (3.07–1.41 eV) of TiO 2 . The resulting photocurrent density (116 uA/cm 2 ) and photodegradation efficiency (rate constant, k = 0.025 min −1 ) of AgVO 3 /V 2 O 5 -TiO 2 are approximately 20 (6 uA/cm 2 ) and 5 times (0.005 min −1 ) higher than those of bare TiO 2 , respectively. The AgVO 3 /V 2 O 5 -TiO 2 achieved a current density of 10 mA at an overpotential of 246.2 mV and exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. The systematic PEC experiments concluded that the optimized of the TiO 2 interface by AgVO 3 and V 2 O 5 could promote the separation and transport of charge carriers.

It is well-known that sluggish surface charge transfer on a cocatalyst-free hematite photoanode limits its solar conversion efficiency in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, Mo is used as a codopant synergistically with Sn in α-Fe2O3 to solve this problem. Besides causing a slight narrowing of bandgap, morphological change, and even sublimation loss of α-Fe2O3, Mo doping also imports low-valent Fe due to charge compensation with MoV/VI as indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Bader charge computation, which increases the densities of donor and surfaces states. Although rate law analysis demonstrates slight retardation of surface reaction kinetics, strongly inhibited charge recombination in surface states by Mo doping still contributes to improving the photocurrent density and reducing the onset potential of α-Fe2O3 and Sn–Fe2O3 photoanodes. An optimized Mo/Sn–Fe2O3 photoanode can realize a low onset potential of 0.68 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) and a photocurrent density of 1.97 mA cm–2 at 1.23 VRHE, enhanced by 58% and 20 times compared to Sn–Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3, respectively. It is demonstrated that Mo doping promotes charge transfer which differs from most traditional n-type dopants that facilitate charge separation but inhibit charge transfer. This report expands the n-type dopant family of α-Fe2O3 for efficient PEC water splitting.

A nitrogen-doped tungsten oxide/BiVO4 (N-WO3/BiVO4) heterojunction structure was obtained utilizing ammonium paratungstate as the nitrogen source and Bi(NO3)3·5H2O as the bismuth source, exhibiting promising photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances and effectively obtaining a long photoresponse range into the visible light region. Notably, the UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra of N-WO3/BiVO4 (566 nm, 2.19 eV) exhibited a notable red shift of the absorption edge compared to that of WO3/BiVO4 (516 nm, 2.47 eV). The N-WO3/BiVO4 photoanode demonstrated an excellent photocurrent density of 0.78 mA cm–2 at 0.68 V vs Ag/AgCl, which surpassed those of the WO3/BiVO4 (0.20 mA cm–2), pure WO3 (0.25 mA cm–2), and pure BiVO4 (0.03 mA cm–2) photoelectrodes. The improvement of the PEC performances was primarily due to the synergy of N doping and the involved heterojunction structure, suggesting that N doping increased the Vis-light response and the heterojunction structure promoted charge separation to improve the lifetime of photoinduced carriers.

Through the hydrothermal synthesis of indium-doped titanium dioxide (In–TiO 2 ), we observed that the indium element intricately integrated into the rutile TiO 2 lattice, leading to surface protrusions on the nanorods, forming aggregated nanorod structures. This unique nanostructure not only significantly increases the specific surface area of the nanomaterial but also effectively enhances the efficiency of charge transfer and light absorption. Through validation by various structural characterization methods, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we confirmed the presence of this structure. This series of validations provides a solid theoretical foundation and experimental evidence for our research. The performance test results show that at 1.23 V, the In–TiO 2 exhibits an impressive photocurrent density of 4.78 mA cm 2 compared to the standard reference electrode, 3.5 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 under AM 1.5 G illumination conditions. Furthermore, the hydrogen production rate of In–TiO 2 is approximately 0.103 mmol h cm −2 , significantly higher than that of pure rutile TiO 2 , which is 0.046 mmol h cm −2 . This study profoundly reveals the importance of indium doping in the TiO 2 lattice for enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production, providing valuable insights for the future development of photocatalytic technology. As research on novel photocatalysts advances, we look forward to further breakthroughs and progress, aiming to make greater contributions to addressing energy and environmental challenges.

Charge separation/transfer and photocorrosion are two major factors limiting the photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications of the Ta3N5 photocatalyst. Herein, we have fabricated Ta3N5 single-crystal nanorods with Mg doping by flux-assisted crystal growth, aiming to shorten the charge transport distance and increase the electrical conductivity. The optimized Mg-doped Ta3N5 photoanodes exhibit an unprecedented PEC water splitting activity with an AM 1.5G photocurrent of 1.5 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE. The high performance is attributed to the fact that the bulk modification, Mg doping, can induce oxygen-impurity surface states as effective electron trap centers, thus increasing the electrical conductivity of Ta3N5 and charge separation efficiency. After a conformal surface modification with CoOOH by a simple electrodeposition method as a water oxidation electrocatalyst to improve the hole extraction and reaction kinetics, the Mg-doped Ta3N5 photoanodes afford an over 4-fold increase in photocurrent (ca. 6.5 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE) and about 70% retention of the initial photocurrent after 70 min irradiation at 1.0 VRHE. Our results testify that the bulk and surface co-modification is an effective route to develop high-performance PEC water splitting devices.

Serious surface recombination and sluggish reaction kinetics hamper the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance from being efficient. Although coupling oxygen evolution catalysts on photoanodes to accelerate electrode reactions has been demonstrated an effective strategy to enhance photocurrent, the surface recombination still limits the performance to an ideal level. Herein, a novel multi-step hole transfer strategy is developed for accelerating hole transport and thus suppressing the surface recombination. In this system, porphyrin and polyaniline both act as hole transfer layers, which construct an effective stair-stepping hole transfer channel to ensure much more holes take part in water oxidation process. This simple interface modulation system exhibits a remarkable photocurrent of 4.5 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), AM 1.5 G illumination) accompanied with good stability and provides a promising strategy for the design of efficient photoanodes for solar conversion.

As an n-type narrow band gap ternary sulfide semiconductor, CdIn 2 S 4 exhibits favourable photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. However, severe photogenerated carrier recombination and slow surface dynamics at the interface of monomer CdIn 2 S 4 restrict its application. Herein, we addressed the problem by fabricating a TiO 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 -annealed photoanode by two-step anodization method, hydrothermal method and annealing treatment. As a result, the TiO 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 -annealed photoanode exhibited 6.21 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs . RHE, which was much higher than the pure CdIn 2 S 4 (0.05 mA/cm 2 ) and TiO 2 (0.14 mA/cm 2 ), and was 9 times higher than TiO 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 (0.68 mA/cm 2 ). This excellent performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of interfacial charge regulation (introducing TiO 2 NTs as electron transport layer) and surface defect regulation (introducing sulfur vacancies as OER active centers to facilitate hole transport). By this way, the photogenerated electrons and holes of CdIn 2 S 4 were simultaneously extracted in opposite directions. Experimental characterizations confirmed the introduction of TiO 2 and sulfur vacancies can enhance the separation and injection efficiency of carriers. This work provides a new idea for regulating interface charges and surface defects to improve the PEC activity of CdIn 2 S 4 .

Direct photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is of prime importance in sustainable energy conversion systems; however, it is a big challenge to simultaneously control light harvesting and charge transport for the improvement of PEC performance. Herein, we report a three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) CsTaWO6–xNx inverse opal array as a promising candidate for the first time. To address the critical challenge, an ultrathin carbon-nitride-based layer-intercalated 3DOM CsTaWO6–xNx architecture as a conformal heterojunction photoanode was assembled. This state-of-the-art conformal heterojunction photoanode with carrier-separation efficiency up to 88% achieves a high current density of 4.59 mA cm–2 at 1.6 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) under simulated AM 1.5G illumination, which is approximately 3.4 and 17 times larger than that of pristine CsTaWO6–xNx inverse opals and powers photoelectrodes in alkaline media, corresponding to an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 32% at 400 nm and outstanding stability for PEC water splitting. Density functional theory calculations propose that the intimate interface of a conformal photoanode optimizes the charge separation and transfer, thus enhancing the intrinsic water oxidation performance. This work enables us to elucidate the pivotal importance of 3DOM architectures and conformal heterostructures and the promising contributions to excellent PEC water-splitting applications.

As one of the most popular photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, hematite (α-Fe2O3) suffers from low conductivity, severe electron–hole recombination, and sluggish water oxidation kinetics unfortunately. Herein, we report an alkali-treatment method to effectively accelerate the water oxidation kinetics of α-Fe2O3 and titanium doped α-Fe2O3 (Ti:α-Fe2O3) nanorod array photoanodes. The purpose of Ti-doping is to increase the conductivity of α-Fe2O3. The photocurrent densities increased 3- and 2-times for α-Fe2O3 and Ti:α-Fe2O3 photoanodes after KOH treatment, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses demonstrated that a conformal thin layer grafted with hydroxyl (−OH) groups was formed on the hematite surface. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) curves under light irradiation and in the dark indicated that the thin OH-grafted overlayer behaved like an electrocatalyst to accelerate the water oxidation kinetics on hematite photoanodes. Moreover, XPS valence band (XPS-VB) spectra, Mott–Schottky analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that a type II heterojunction was in situ formed by the OH-grafted overlayer on the hematite nanorod surface, which substantially enhanced the surface charge separation efficiency. The improved PEC performance could be attributed to the accelerated water oxidation kinetics and enhanced surface charge transfer.
