Iron Tailings-Based Layered Double Hydroxide-Silica Hybrid for Slow-Release Nutrient Delivery and Enhanced Crop Growth in Sustainable Agriculture

Aihua Xiang,Yifan Li,Xinglan Li,Kun Liu

The application of chemical fertilizers has significantly contributed to alleviating global hunger. However, excessive application of traditional chemical fertilizers (TCF) has led to significant environmental degradation due to their low nutrient utilization efficiency. Herein, a layered double hydroxides-silica hybrid material (HTS) derived from iron tailings is developed for sustainable nutrient delivery to enhance nutrient utilization efficiency. The iron tailing is successfully transformed into HTS through the structural reorganization, resulting in a hierarchical nanostructure with a specific surface area of 245.46 m 2 /g. Due to interlayer intercalation and interfacial interactions, HTS-based slow-release compound fertilizer (SRF) exhibits controlled nutrient release profiles in sand column leaching tests, achieving cumulative releases of 81.36% (N), 78.78% (K), 44.34% (P), and 71.89% (Se) over a 30-day period. Field experiments show SRF enhances fresh biomass of Sonchus oleraceus and Pepper by 100% and 31.93%, respectively. Concurrently, SRF improved soil cation exchange capacity by 18.18% and enhanced nitrate retention by 9.43-fold. Furthermore, the preliminary analysis indicated that the cost for the analysis and the reagents for SRF synthesis are economical. This strategy provides a scalable, cost-effective approach to repurpose mining waste into efficient fertilizers, promoting resource conservation and sustainable agriculture.

Multifunctional sodium alginate/nanocellulose fibers/chitosan edible coating: A sustainable strategy for prolonged fruit preservation and reduced cold-chain dependency

Kejin Yu,Lina Yang,Siyu Zhang

Fruits and vegetables are highly susceptible to storage conditions; therefore, the long-term preservation of fresh produce without cold-chain storage remains a remarkable challenge to food security. Herein, we synthesis a multifunctional, edible coating based on sodium alginate (SA) reinforced with nanocellulose fibers (NCFs) and chitosan (CS). The results showed that the monomers were crosslinked by hydrogen, ester bonds, and electrostatic interactions in the composite coating. Meanwhile, SA/NCFs/CS exhibited excellent mechanical properties (elongation: 101 %; tensile strength: 88.92 MPa; toughness: 6.59 MJ/m 3 ). Additionally, the composite coating displayed excellent antioxidant (96.33 %), antibacterial (99.02 %) and biocompatibility (99.99 %). The preservation experiment showed that, at 4 °C, the composite coating could extend the shelf life of bananas and strawberries to 12 days. It thus facilitates the long-term preservation of various fruit types and reduces the costs associated with cold-chain transportation. Thus, this study offers a novel perspective for developing multifunctional, edible preservation materials, providing a sustainable and effective alternative to traditional cold-chain-dependent storage methods.

Bandgap-engineered BiOBr/I heterojunction reinforced PVA/CMC film integrating photodynamic antibacterial model and mechanical robustness for enhanced fruit preservation

Bangfeng Fu,Ruilei Yang,Liang Zhang,Weijie Gong,Ximei Han,Bingzhi Li,Qianjin Liu,Jianlong Wang

With the escalating focus on sustainable food packaging, the concurrent demands for outstanding mechanical robustness and effective photodynamic antibacterial activity in materials designed for fruit preservation have yet to be adequately fulfilled. This study first engineered an innovative food packaging nanocomposite (CPBI) through strategic integration of BiOBr/I heterojunction within a polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose (PVA/CMC) matrix, integrating photodynamic antibacterial functionality and ultra-high mechanical strength for perishable fruit preservation. The incorporation of BiOBr/I into the natural-polymer network achieved remarkable pathogen inactivation efficiencies of 97.4 % against Staphylococcus aureus and 93.8 % against Escherichia coli O157:H7 via ROS-mediated membrane peroxidation. Simultaneously, the CPBI film displayed superior mechanical properties (tensile strength: 240.1 MPa, fracture strain: 260 %). In practical storage, this film successfully extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes to 20 days, demonstrating its highly effective fruit preservation capability. This strategy advances the evolution of intelligent packaging solutions, simultaneously addressing the tripartite challenges of material sustainability, postharvest preservation, and foodborne pathogen mitigation.

Preparation of a cellulose nanocrystals/surfactant stabilized pickering emulsion systems with improved foliar affinity and bioactivity against Pseudomonas Syringae pv. Actinidiae

Yiping Liu,Weixiang Qiu,Yalan Mo,Zhaoyang Zhang,Jing Tian,Xinpeng Yang,Xinjun Hu,Caisheng Xiao,Xiaogang Li

With the demand for natural polymers, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based Pickering emulsion systems (PE) have been introduced in agricultural control due to their high stability. Surfactants further reduce surface tension and enhance the spreading and deposition of pesticide formulations. In controlling bacterial canker in kiwifruit, conventional formulations often exhibit high-resistance, but poor spreading, and deposition, resulting in unsatisfactory efficacy. Therefore, selecting highly effective and low-toxicity formulations is critical for kiwifruit production. In this study, the plant extract—P-Cymene (PC, identified via laboratory screening) was used as a model compound with strong antibacterial activity to prepare CNC/surfactant synergistically stabilized Pickering emulsions (PC@PE). The CNC employed was the type I cellulose nanorods exhibiting structural integrity, and strong electronegativity, enabling the formation of oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. PC@PE stabilized with CNC and the surfactant SK-551 demonstrated high stability across temperature, pH, and ionic strength variations. Rheological analysis confirmed that PC@PE behaves as a non-Newtonian liquid with gel-like properties. PC@PE exhibited a surface tension of 25.90 mN·m −1 , a contact angle of 9.40° on kiwifruit leaves, a deposition of 48.36 mg·cm −2 , and an EC 50 value of 69.089 mg·L −1 against Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae ( Psa ), indicating enhanced leaf affinity and biological activity. These results highlight the effectiveness of PC against Psa , expand the application of Pickering emulsions in agricultural disease management, and provide a new approach for controlling bacterial canker in kiwifruit.

Development of pH-responsive dynamic liposomes for enhancing pesticide deposition and smart on-demand delivery

Dan Yang,Xiaoshan Zheng,Jinlan Xin,Junhua Ning,Zefeng Lin,Xingxing Liu,Huanling Li,Kangle Jia,Longfei Yu,Linjia Huang,Yuepeng Cai

BACKGROUND Various strategies have been developed to reduce pesticide usage while enhancing efficacy. However, the current formulation systems face several challenges such as complex system compositions, low encapsulation efficiency, unavoidable use of organic solvents, poor wettability and retention, and particularly the difficulty in addressing these issues simultaneously, which limits their practical applications. RESULTS An imine-based dynamic covalent phospholipid was synthesized to construct pH-responsive avermectin (PC@AVM) liposomes to achieve nanodispersion, complete wettability, efficient deposition, and precise on-demand delivery. Under neutral or alkaline conditions, AVM is released slowly from the liposomes, whereas rapid release occurs under acidic conditions. And the formed liposomes exhibit excellent storage stability and photostability. The residual rate of PC@AVM liposomes is about 30% higher than that of unencapsulated AVM after 75 h of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, because the hydrophobic AVM can be embedded in the hydrophobic regions of phospholipid bilayers to prevent photodegradation. The PC@AVM liposomes exhibit strong adhesion to leaf surfaces, resulting in exceptional rainfastness with a retention rate of nearly 90% after washing. Meanwhile, the vesicle-like liposome can strongly interact with surface microstructures/nanostructures during the high-speed impact process, thereby also suppressing splashing and ensuring complete deposition of droplets on hydrophobic surfaces. Moreover, PC@AVM liposomes show long-term insecticidal activity and exhibit excellent biosafety for environmental organisms. CONCLUSION This work provides an innovative carrier and constructs multifunctional, on-demand release pesticide liposomes, thereby potentially reducing pesticide use and promoting the development of sustainable agriculture. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Phosphorus-Rich Calcium-Based Bentonite Coupled with Smooth Vetch (Vicia villosa var.) for Enhanced Improvement of Cd-Contaminated Farmland: Interaction and Synergistic Passivation Mechanism

Jianhua Qu,Hongxuan Chu,Fansong Meng,Xiaoyang Liu,Fuxuan Bi,Mengning Wang,Libo Fu,Hongli Fan,Ying Zhang

Phosphorus-rich calcium-based bentonite (BM-PCB) was synthesized via a ball milling process and synergistically integrated with smooth vein (SV) to establish a coupled remediation system for Cd-contaminated soil. The combined application of BM-PCB and SV resulted in a 61.28% reduction in bioavailable Cd content, exhibiting 2.81- and 5.13-fold enhancements compared with those of BM-PCB (21.81%) and SV (11.94%) alone, respectively, confirming the existence of a strong synergistic passivation effect. BM-PCB enhanced the Cd enrichment capacity of SV by 2.83 times by promoting root development, subsequently increasing humic acid (HA) production by 33.33% by catalyzing the condensation reactions between phenolic compounds and amino acids following SV incorporation. The interaction between HA and BM-PCB enhanced Cd adsorption by improving the interlayer spacing, pore structure, functional group content, and charge characteristics of BM-PCB. Additionally, the beneficial microorganisms recruited by the coupling of BM-PCB and SV reduced Cd bioavailability as well as facilitated the decomposition and transformation of SV residues, thereby improving soil nutrients. This approach consequently increased the maize yield by 61.31% while concurrently reducing the Cd content in grains to comply with food safety standards. Life cycle assessment confirmed that the proposed BM-PCB+SV system represented a cost-effective and low-environmental-risk “three-in-one” strategy, simultaneously achieving Cd immobilization, soil fertility enhancement, and food security assurance.

A Hierarchical core-shell nanohybrid for dual-stimuli-responsive antifungal delivery against Botrytis cinerea

Qi Sun,Jian Zeng,Miaomiao Ma,Meiqi Huang,Jianmei Li,Tao Le

The persistent threat of phytopathogenic fungi necessitates precision-targeted and sustainable antifungal strategies beyond conventional agrochemicals. This study presents a hierarchically structured micro/nanosystem (CMC@Eu-ZIF@ZnO) engineered for precision antifungal delivery by leveraging the specific virulence mechanisms of Botrytis cinerea . The composite features a dual core-shell architecture: a ZnO microsphere core encapsulated within a ZIF-8 intermediate shell and an outer carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coating. This intelligent design integrates pH- and cellulase-triggered release pathways, exploiting fungal-induced and enzymatic secretion for on-demand cargo delivery. Synergistic action between Eu and ZnO nanoparticles enhances membrane disruption and oxidative stress, resulting in superior antifungal activity. The system achieved 91.5 % cumulative release under dual stimuli and 67.9 % rainfast retention, with negligible phytotoxicity in soybean germination assays and effective lesion control in tomato leaves. By overcoming instability, non-target leakage, and limited responsiveness of conventional fungicides, this study establishes a microenvironment-responsive hierarchical delivery platform. This work highlights the potential of integrating natural antifungals with hierarchical nanostructures for eco-friendly, precision crop protection.

Synergistic regulation of ammonifying bacteria and nitrification inhibitors enhances organic fertilizer mineralization in tea plantation soils: microbial mechanisms and agronomic benefits

Shi Huai,Liu Guohong,Chen Qianqian,Zheng Xiangzhou

Aims Tea plants exhibit a strong preference for ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), yet organic fertilizers release nitrogen slowly and are prone to nitrate leaching, createting a dual challenge of insufficient supply and loss. This study aimed to validate a synergistic strategy combining ammonifing bacteria and nitrification inhibitors to enhance organic nitrogen mineralization and NH₄⁺-N retention in tea plantion soils, and to elucidate the underlying microbial mechanisms. Methods A 56-day soil incubation experiment tested five treatments: control (CK), organic fertilizer (OF), OF with ammonifying bacteria (OM), OM + dicyandiamide (OMN1), and OM + 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (OMN2). Soil NH 4 + -N /NO 3 − -N dynamics, microbial communities, and functional genes were analyzed. Field trials further assessed the agronomic effects of four treatments (CK, OF, OMN1, OMN2) on tea yield and quality. Results The combined use of ammoniating bacteria and nitrification inhibitors synergistically enhanced NH 4 + -N availability by accelerating organic N mineralization and suppressing nitrification. This strategy reshaped microbial co-occurrence networks and enhanced the expression of nitrogen metabolism genes without altering overall diversity. enabling targeted N supply regulation. Field validation confirmed significant improvements in tea yield and quality. Conclusions Synergistic regulation of microbial nitrogen transformation offers a promising approach to optimize organic fertilization in tea plantations. By enhancing NH₄⁺-N supply and reducing nitrification loss, this strategy improves both soil nitrogen dynamics and tea production outcomes.

Preparation of artificial humic acid from cotton stalk and saline-alkali soil by synergistic catalytic pyrolysis and its potential agricultural application

Xiuduan Yang,Boyuan Tan,Dehui Kong,Jiarun Duan,Xueying Zhao,Gan Wang,Xiaojun Niu,Lijuan Zhang,Li Yang,Bekchanov Davronbek,Xintai Su

s The green synthesis of artificial humic acid (AHA) is a key approach to the efficient utilization of biomass waste resources. To reduce dependence on strong alkaline agents (KOH, NaOH, etc.) in current humification methods, this study proposes using Saline-alkali soil (SAS) as a cost-effective substitute for producing AHA from biomass solid waste. The results of the study indicated that an AHA yield of 23.33 % ± 1.12 % was achieved through pyrolytic humification under optimal conditions (250 °C, 2 h, with SAS to cotton stalk (CS) ratio of 4: 1). Characterization analysis demonstrated that the SAS supplied an alkaline environment throughout the humification process. Furthermore, the mineral elements in the SAS (Na + , K + , Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ ) facilitated the decomposition of lignin to generate polyphenolic structures, which promoted the protein condensation and increased the aromaticity of AHA. Carbon flow analysis revealed that 60.5 % of the carbon was immobilized, with AHA contributing up to 25.6 % of the total immobilized carbon. Hydroponic experiments demonstrated that the addition of AHA at a concentration of 200 mg L −1 significantly enhanced wheat growth. The residual carbon soil cultivation experiment revealed that the residual carbon exhibited a high specific surface area (6.57 m 2 g −1 ) and effective adsorption properties, achieving a 16 % immobilization rate of Pb and alleviating heavy metal stress on plants. This study presents an innovative approach to the integrated management of SAS and converting biomass solid waste into 'carbon-negative emissions'.

Bioprinted living microalgae-laden polysaccharide-based hydrogels for easy-to-swallow alternative foods

Hongtao Wu,Zongshuai Lv,Xuanqi Liu,Minwen Jiang,Weiwei Tan,Xiaoyi Li,Qing Yi,Lu Zhang,Xiaojie Li,Yawen Yao,Jiajing Zhou

Microalgae cultivation in hydrogels offers a promising solution to address water and arable land scarcity for enhanced agriculture efficiency and food production. However, such emerging culture system is often associated with tedious hydrogel dissolution and complex nutrient extraction, which limit the potential of microalgae as sustainable food resources. Herein, we develop a microalgae-laden polysaccharide-based hydrogels (MPHs), which can directly serve as easy-to-swallow nutritional alternative foods after cultivation without post-treatment. Specifically, microalgae are formulated with starch and carrageenan for MPHs, and the construction of living microalgal frameworks with customizable architectures enhances the light and water utilization, exhibiting significantly increased microalgal yield (9.1 ± 0.3 g L −1 ), 4.3 times higher than that of conventional liquid systems. Moreover, the MPH scaffold can be designed into various structures and shows high content of protein after cultivation, therefore emerging as easy-to-swallow foods for people with dysphagia. International Initiative for the Standardization of Dysphagia Diet (IDDSI) evaluation further confirms the hydrogel-like behavior aligned with IDDSI levels 5–7, highlighting its potential as structured alternative foods. This streamlined microalgae farming not only improves the efficiency of biosynthesis, but also democratizes access to nutritional food alternatives for food sustainability.

Preparation and characterization on a dual-layer slow-release urea fertilizer coated using ethyl cellulose and phosphoric acid-carbamate di-esterified starch-based chitosan hydrogel

Shijia Gu,Wenzhi Zhang,Xiaoxiao Tan,Peng Wang,Zhichun Shi,Jun Lv,Ming Zhao,Guohua Dong

The extensive utilization of natural starch (NS) in preparation of slow-release fertilizer (SRF) remains a crucial challenge owing to its undesirable defects such as poor solubility and mechanical properties. Herein, based on the preparation of di-esterified starch derivatives (PCDS) from NS with phosphoric acid and carbamate and synthesis of PCDS cross-linked chitosan (CS) hydrogels (PCDS-CSH), a dual-layer coated urea SRF (EC/PCDS-CSH/urea-SRF) was successfully developed utilizing ethyl cellulose (EC) and PCDS-CSH as the inner/outer coating. Due to the ameliorated properties of PCDS (viscosity and gelation temperature) compared to NS, the PCDS-CSH shows significantly improved swelling performance and water retention capacity. Importantly, the corresponding EC/PCDS-CSH/urea-SRF demonstrates superior nitrogen (N) nutrient slow-release behaviors, achieving cumulative release rates of 48.5 % (12 h ) and 61.3 % (48 h) in water together with 22.9 % (10 d) and 52.9 % (29 d) in soil, respectively. Kinetics fitting analysis reveals that N release in EC/PCDS-CSH/urea-SRF follows the Higuchi model (in water) and First-order kinetics (in soil), respectively, both of which belong to non-Fickian diffusion process. Furthermore, tomato seedling pot experiments demonstrate that the EC/PCDS-CSH/urea-SRF shows a significant promotion role toward the plant growth. Consequently, this study provides a novel route for developing biomass based SRFs utilizing modified NS derivatives.

An amphiphilic carboxymethyl chitosan-based nanopesticide delivery system with enhanced foliar deposition for improved insect-repellent and antibacterial efficacy

Jihao Zuo,Jinting Cai,Ying Li,Yitong Lin,Ruopeng Lan,Long Chen,Dongyan Yang,Xinhua Zhou,Hongjun Zhou

BACKGROUND The significant loss of dosage during pesticide interfacial transfer notably undermines bioavailability, posing a critical challenge to sustainable agriculture. Designing pesticide formulations with efficient foliar deposition facilitates reduced application rates and enhanced efficacy. RESULTS In this study, methyl-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)silicon (TSS) was grafted onto carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) via a free radical polymerization reaction, followed by self-assembly to form an amphiphilic carrier (C-A x -T y ). The carrier then encapsulated eugenol (Eug) through hydrophobic interactions, resulting in the rational construction of the amphiphilic carboxymethyl chitosan-based nanopesticide delivery system (Eug@C-A x -T y ). The regulation of TSS addition during carrier preparation significantly reduced dynamic surface tension while simultaneously increasing the viscosity of the solutions. Droplet impact dynamics evaluation confirmed that C-A x -T y effectively mitigated rebound behavior during high-speed collisions with hydrophobic surfaces. Notably, Eug@C-A x -T y exhibited superior dynamic wettability, as demonstrated by impact dynamics analysis and energy conversion analysis. Leveraging the enhanced foliar deposition ability and delayed volatilization of Eug, vegetables treated with Eug@C-A 0.4 -T 1.0 demonstrated improved antifeedant activity against Spodoptera litura . Moreover, Eug@C-A x -T y exhibited significantly enhanced antibacterial activity against foodborne Staphylococcus aureus compared to Eug, while also demonstrating reduced phytotoxicity and minimal inhibition of seed germination. CONCLUSION This study provides theoretical insights for enhancing the foliar deposition of nanopesticide formulations and improving the bioavailability of plant essential oils, thus offering promising applications in sustainable agriculture. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.
