Due to the special surface wettability, self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-icing and other properties, superhydrophobic materials are widely used as coating or coating additive on the surface of building materials, ships, and even for liquid transportation, biomedicine, etc., which
have become one of the research hotspots in the direction of coating in recent years. However, the hydrophobic surface itself has weak stability and poor durability, which affects its application value. Therefore, in this study, PS nano-microcapsule was prepared by the multiphase emulsion
method, and their particle size was measured by SEM electron microscopy to be about 350–550 nm, with a relatively uniform distribution. The hydrophobicity of PS nano-microcapsule modified with trimethoxy (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-trifluoroctyl) silane (PFOTMS) at different molar ratios was investigated.
SEM results showed that the surface roughness of the modified PFOTMS-PS nano-microcapsule could be changed. The contact angle proved that the greater the content of PFOTMS, the better the hydrophobicity of the modified PFOTMS-PS nano-microcapsule. When the content reached 50%, the hydrophobic
performance was the best. As a coating, PFOTMS-PS nano-microcapsule has no specific requirement for the properties of the substrate material. It should be noted that the hydrophobicity of the coating did not change significantly after 30 days at room temperature. The above results indicated
that PFOTMS-PS nano-microcapsule had good hydrophobicity and stability, and is expected to be used in many fields such as waterproof textiles and architectural coatings in the future.

Microcapsules with smooth, transparent, and compact walls used for electrophoretic displays (EPDs) were prepared and characterized. The approach to fabricate EPD microcapsules was based on templating an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by monodispersed poly(methyl methacrylate- co -butyl methacrylate- co -acrylic acid) latex particles synthesized by dispersion polymerization. The individual latex particles were then transformed into robust capsule walls by successively using solvent swelling, covalent cross-linking, and sintering. The diameter of the emulsion droplets was controlled by changing the concentration of latex in the emulsion, and the thickness of the wall changed according to the diameter of the latex particles. These microcapsules for EPDs were applied successfully in preparing a clock display panel controlled by a single-chip microprocessor operated at a low direct current voltage, demonstrating that these microcapsules can be used in EPDs.

This study addresses the shortcoming of rice protein, which has limited its widespread use as a food ingredient due to its extremely low solubility in neutral aqueous solution. Herein, rice protein (RP) was dispersed in aqueous solutions with different alkali concentrations (0.075 M~0.125 M), and then heat-treated (80 °C, 1~4 h) to obtain a modified RP. The physicochemical properties of the modified RP in neutral aqueous solution and its performance as a microencapsulated wall material were then comprehensively analyzed. The results showed that the solubility of the RP at pH 7.0 could be increased to more than 56.3% by alkali solution combined with moderate heat treatment for 1 h. Further analysis revealed that the enhancement of the RP solubility performance was mainly due to the depolymerization of rice glutenin cluster aggregates, with the average size decreasing to 140~180 nm, which was also accompanied by an increase in net zeta potential. Structural analysis pointed to a significant decrease in the surface hydrophobicity and free sulfhydryl content of the RP after thermal treatment in alkaline solution, while degradation of glutenin subunits (especially for the results of alkaline treatment at higher concentrations) and an increase in random coil content occurred. These physicochemical properties and conformational transitions of the modified RP contributed to its excellent emulsification properties and microencapsulation ability (encapsulation efficiency > 97%). Nevertheless, the redispersing properties of microcapsules prepared with the modified RP as a wall material were significantly weaker than those of sodium caseinate. These findings provide new guidance and insights into the modulation of functional properties and applications of RP.

This study presents an innovative microcapsule system that simultaneously enables phase-change thermal regulation and autonomous self-healing in bitumen pavements. Using optimized in-situ polymerization, we engineered microcapsules with a hexadecane core (18.1 °C phase transition, 237 J/g latent heat) encapsulated in a robust HMMM shell (2–3 μm thickness). Structural characterization (FT-IR, electron microscopy) confirmed uniform spherical morphology (15–25 μm diameter). The microcapsules demonstrated outstanding thermal stability, retaining 95.8 % enthalpy after 500 thermal cycles (-10 °C to 60 °C) and resisting degradation up to 250 °C. When incorporated into bitumen at 5.0 wt%, the system reduced peak surface temperature by 12.3 °C under 1 kW/m² radiation while improving aging resistance (14.7 % lower G* after RTFO/PAV). Penetration tests showed enhanced temperature susceptibility, with aged modified bitumen stabilizing at 32–41 dmm versus 35–60 dmm for conventional bitumen. At 10.0 wt%, the softening point increased to 56.8 °C, confirming superior high-temperature stability. The self-healing efficiency reached 55.2 % at 20 °C (BOEF test), with consistent performance over multiple cycles (57 %→52 % after six cycles). Nano-XCT verified homogeneous dispersion, and interfacial analysis indicated strong microcapsule-matrix bonding. Crucially, the phase-change behavior facilitates crack repair by creating optimal thermal conditions for healing. This dual-functional system offers a holistic solution for pavement durability, extending service life while minimizing maintenance—a transformative advancement for sustainable infrastructure.

Manipulation of gut microbiota by bacterial metabolites has shown protective effects against colitis; while the efficacy is strictly limited by the poor oral delivery efficiency and single drug usage. Here, a novel prebiotics and postbiotics synergistic delivery microcapsule composed of indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) postbiotic and three prebiotics including alginate sodium, resistant starch (RS), and chitosan via microfluidic electrospray for preventing and treating colitis are proposed. It is found that oral administration of IPA microcapsules (IPA@MC) to mice can exert significant protective effects to colitis, suggesting the therapeutic synergy between prebiotics and postbiotics. Furthermore, the mechanism of the IPA@MC is revealed in modulating the gut microbiota, that is by significantly increasing the overall richness and abundance of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) producing bacteria such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia . These results indicate that the prebiotics and postbiotics synergistic delivery microcapsules are ideal candidates for treating colitis.

Scale and biofouling are two critical problems in industrial circulating cooling water systems, urging the development of innovative solutions to address both issues simultaneously. The direct usage of liquid scale inhibitors and biocides often fails to provide long-term effective control and results in significant wastage of agents. In this work, the melamine formaldehyde resin/clove oil/1‑hydroxy ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (MCH) microcapsules were successfully synthesized by double emulsion water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) in-situ polymerization method. The 1‑hydroxy ethylidene-1, 1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) acted as a scale inhibitor and clove oil as a natural biocide, which offered a comprehensive solution to both scaling and biofouling issues. The as-prepared MCH microcapsule exhibited a smooth multinuclear spherical structure, a uniform size. UV–vis results confirmed the successful encapsulation of HEDP and clove oil within the MF shell, with encapsulation amounts of approximately 7.47 % and 23.67 %, respectively. Remarkably, the release of the HEDP and clove oil could extend up to 60 h and 160 h, respectively, which was consistent with the First-order model, displaying an excellent sustained-release performance. Static scale inhibition experiments indicated that the microcapsules possess sustained scale inhibition ability. The scale inhibition efficiency of the dynamic release solution of MCH microcapsules remained above 90 % for the initial 14 h, with the highest scale inhibition rate exceeding 98 %. Furthermore, these microcapsules displayed remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, with both antibacterial rates exceeding 99.9 %. Overall, the sustained release of the scale inhibitors and biocides ensures long-term control and reduction in agent wastage, which presents a promising application in addressing the scaling and biofouling issues in industrial circulating water systems.

Dual microcapsule systems, especially those based on the polyurea matrix, have emerged as pivotal components driving innovation in self-healing materials, thanks to the intrinsic properties of polyurea, primarily diamine and diisocyanate, rendering it an optimal choice for enhancing self-healing coatings. However, the encapsulation of polyurea components is fraught with substantial technical hurdles. Addressing these challenges, a novel methodology has been devised, leveraging n-heptane as a solvent in the liquid diamine emulsion process to facilitate the synthesis of diamine microcapsules. These microcapsules exhibit a uniform spherical morphology and a robust shell structure, with an encapsulated core material ratio reaching 39.69%. Analogously, the encapsulation process for diisocyanate has been refined, achieving a core material percentage of 10.05 wt. %. The integration of this bifunctional microcapsule system into diverse polymeric matrices, including epoxy resins and polyurethanes, has been demonstrated to significantly enhance the self-healing efficacy of the resultant coatings. Empirical validation through a series of tests, encompassing scratch, abrasion, and saltwater immersion assays, has revealed self-healing efficiencies of 21.8% and 33.3%, respectively. These results indicate significant improvements in the durability and self-repair capability of coatings, marking a notable advancement in self-healing materials with promising potential for tailored applications in automotive, aerospace, and construction industries.

Adsorbents with high adsorption efficiency and excellent biosafety for biomedical applications are highly required. MXene is a promising candidate owning these advantages, yet pristine MXene faces dilemmas including insufficient utility of surface site as well as limited processibility. Here, we develop MXene-encapsulated porous microcapsules via microfluidics. The microcapsules have a biomass hydrogel shell that provides robust support for MXene in the core, by which the microcapsules are endowed with high MXene dosage and remarkable biosafety. Additionally, the MXene nanoflakes assemble into a three-dimensional network via metal ion-induced gelation, thereby avoiding restacking and significantly improving surface utilization. Moreover, a freeze-pretreatment of the microcapsules during preparation results in the formation of a macroporous structure in the shell, which can facilitate the diffusion of the target molecules. These features, combined with additional magneto-responsiveness rendered by the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles, contribute to prominent performances of the microcapsules in cleaning uremia toxins including creatinine, urea, and uric acid. Thus, it is anticipated that the MXene-encapsulated microcapsules will be promising adsorbents in dialysis-related applications, and the combination of microfluidic encapsulation with metal ion gelation will provide a novel approach for construction of hybrid MXene materials with desired functions.

Phase change energy storage microcapsules were synthesized in situ by using melamine-formaldehyde–urea co-condensation resin (MUF) as wall material, n-octadecane (C18) as core material and styryl-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) as emulsifier. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to study the effects of emulsifier type, emulsifier dosage, core–wall ratio and pH on the morphology and thermal properties of microcapsules. The results show that the pH of core material and the ratio of core to wall have a great influence on the performance of microcapsules. SMA emulsifiers and MUF are suitable for the encapsulation of C18. When the pH is 4.5 and the core–wall ratio is 2/1, the latent heat and encapsulation efficiency of phase transition reaches 207.3 J g−1and 84.7%, respectively. The prepared phase-change microcapsules also have good shape stability and thermal stability.

Wood coatings endure wear and tear and may experience reduced service life. Therefore, the self-healing feature is crucial for practical application in wood protection. The study involved preparing a self-healing microcapsule through in-situ polymerization. Wood oil was utilized as the core material and urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) as the wall structure, forming a “core-shell” structure. The average particle size of the microcapsules is approximately 2.8 μm. Wood oil Microcapsules of varying content are added to water-based coatings and applied to form a self-healing wood coating. When external forces damaged the wood coating, the microcapsules ruptured and released the inner core to repair the coating. The study results indicated that adding microcapsules at a 6 % level significantly increased the coating's repair rate to over 30 %, enhancing its mechanical properties. This microcapsule type in wood oil can protect wood coatings and guide future wood coating repair methods.

To enhance the longevity of materials, minimize maintenance expenses, and optimize material performance. The wall material employed in this study was urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF), and a dual microcapsule self-healing system was established by synthesizing two distinct microcapsules of epoxy resin and polymercaptan via an in situ polymerization technique. Moreover, the reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction parameters were as follows: core-shell ratio of 2:1, surfactant concentration of 0.6 g/L (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS): Arabic gelatin (GA) = 2:1), polymerization pH = 3.5, stirring rate of 700r/min. Then, the two microcapsules (The mass ratio of the two microcapsules is 1:1) were added to the epoxy resin matrix at 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% to prepare the resin matrix with self-healing properties. The conical double cantilever beam (TDCB) was used to test the mechanical properties of the matrix. The results showed that the matrix with microcapsule content of 10 wt% had relatively better comprehensive properties, and the self-healing rate was 49.87% at room temperature. These findings provide valuable insights and potential for advancing the development of self-healing materials.
