Conductive hydrogels usually suffer from weak mechanical properties and are easily destroyed, resulting in limited applications in flexible electronics. Concurrently, adding conductive additives to the hydrogel solution increases the probability of agglomeration and uneven dispersion issues. In this study, the biocompatible natural polymer chitosan was used as the network substrate. The rigid network employed was the Cit 3− ion crosslinked chitosan (CS) network, and the MBA chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) network was used as the flexible network. Tannic acid-reduced graphene oxide (TA-rGO), which has excellent conductivity and dispersibility, is used as a conductive filler. Thus, a CS/TA-rGO/PAM double network conductive hydrogel with excellent performance, high toughness, high conductivity, and superior sensing sensitivity was prepared. The prepared CS/TA-rGO/PAM double network conductive hydrogels have strong tensile properties (strain and toughness as high as 2009 % and 1045 kJ/cm 3 ), excellent sensing sensitivity (GF value was 4.01), a wider strain detection range, high cycling stability and durability, good biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties . The hydrogel can be assembled into flexible wearable devices that can not only dynamically detect human movements, such as joint bending, facial expression changes, swallowing, and saying, but also recognize handwriting and enable human-computer interaction.

Flexible wearable devices with highly sensitive properties have raised enormous attention in human healthcare monitoring, soft robots and smart textiles. However, the current most researches only focus on the improvement of sensing sensitivity and the acquisition of mechanical performance, regularly ignoring the significance of wearing comfort and breathability. Herein, to overcome this challenge, we developed a fibrous sensor with three-dimensional reversible conductive networks for multiple signals monitoring via novel ultrasonic-coating technology. As a strain sensor, it possessed higher sensitivity (Gauge factor = 8.96) with excellent dynamic durability (5000 cycles) and mechanical performances than other conductive gel and film based sensors, which can meet the requirement of signal detection in various extreme environments. More surprisingly, the wearable textile sensors were assembled successfully by traditional sewing technology with different shapes. These textile sensors possessed outstanding real-time signal capture capability with temperature and full-range pH at various states such as stretching and twisting. Additionally, the textile sensors can detect different degrees of human movements such as large deformation finger bending and weak deformation swallowing, which paved the way for the development of flexible wearable devices.

The development of functional hydrogels with wet adhesion strength and antiswelling properties is crucial for applications ranging from biomedicine to wearable electronics but remains difficult to realize. Herein, we developed a high-performance TA/PAAc/EMA/C-CNT (TPEC) hydrogel via a solvent displacement process. The TPEC hydrogel showed no observable swelling behavior even after 8 days of immersion in a water bath, demonstrating its excellent antiswelling property. The TPEC hydrogel possesses strong adhesive strength in the underwater environment, allowing it to adhere firmly to rigid substrates and moving fingers, and also acts as a sealing material to prevent liquid leakage underwater. In addition, the TPEC hydrogel also demonstrated improved mechanical properties, good conductivity, and antimicrobial properties. Finally, exploiting its multifunctional properties, the resulting TPEC hydrogel is utilized as a flexible wearable strain sensor for monitoring body motion in both air and water environments. This work is expected to open up new opportunities for developing future generations of high-performance adhesive hydrogels for use in wet environments.

Due to good stretchability, conductive gels have significant advantages in the field of manufacturing wearable flexible electronic devices. However, hydrogel-based and ionogel-based conductive materials reported in previous studies are prone to solvent evaporation and leakage, which would seriously affect the gel electromechanical performance in extreme working environments. In addition, how to manufacture gel-based flexible devices with complex structures is also a significant challenge in this field. Based on this, a photocurable 3D-printed eutectogel system was designed in this work. The precursor solution was composed of N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide (NAM), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and DES solvents. The prepared eutectogel had excellent comprehensive properties, such as good transparency (>80 % in the visible region), high tensile performance (up to 648 %), strong mechanical strength (breaking strength up to 938 kPa), electrical conductivity (up to 78 mS/m at 25 ℃), environmental tolerance (-80 ℃ − 60 ℃), and so on. In addition, flexible wearable devices with complex microstructures can be constructed efficiently by DLP printing technology. In the low-pressure detection range (0–––2.5 kPa), the sensitivity of the printed eutectogel-based microarray was 8.78 times higher than that of the block or sheet gel structure, and various weak deformation signals can be timely and accurately detected. Therefore, the combination of photo-cured 3D printing and eutectic gels will provide new possibilities for the development and promotion of intelligent, flexible wearable devices.

In situ analysis of sweat provides a simple, convenient, cost-effective, and noninvasive approach for the early diagnosis of physical illness in humans and is particularly useful in family care. In this study, a flexible and skin-attachable colorimetric sweat sensor for multiplexed analysis is developed using a simple, cost-effective, and convenient method. The obtained sweat sensor can be used to simultaneously detect glucose, lactate, urea, and pH value in sweat, as well as sweat loss and skin temperature. Only 2.5 μL of sweat is enough for the whole test, and the sweat loss and chemical-sensing results can be read out conveniently by naked eyes or a smartphone. In addition, body temperature can also be detected with an additional electrical circuit. Our sweat sensor provides a new, cost-effective, and convenient approach for in vitro diagnosis of multiple components in sweat, and the easy fabrication and cost-effectiveness make our sensor commercializable in the near future.

The flexible self-charging zinc ion micro-supercapacitors (ZIMSC) that can be effectively charged by harvesting ubiquitous energy from the air, not only achieve power supply anytime and anywhere but also improve the integrated degree without external charging plug or cable, enabling it a promising candidate for the wearable electronic device in various environmental scenarios. Herein, we reported a chemically self-charging ZIMSC based on a free-standing V 2 CT x /CNT electrode. Introducing 1D CNT into 2D V 2 CT x fundamentally overcomes the self-stacking problem of the nanosheets while providing additional ion transport paths and improving the conductivity of active electrodes. The area-specific capacity of V 2 CT x /CNT-based ZIMSC achieves 117.2 mF cm −2 after 8.0 h self-charging. The excellent self-charging performance is attributed to the oxidation of vanadium in the V 2 CT x -based cathode stimulated by ambient oxygen, accompanied by the Zn 2+ deintercalation process. The flexible ZIMSC exhibited an optimal area capacitance of 246.88 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 . Additionally, the self-charging ZIMSC is integrated with the V 2 CT x -based pressure sensors for a self-powering wearable system that exhibits excellent stability over 50,000 loading/unloading cycles. This work provides a rational design for constructing highly efficient self-charging energy storage devices and broadens the horizons of flexible wearable devices.

Eutectic gels have great advantages in the application of flexible wearable electronic devices due to their good stability and flexibility. However, the adhesion properties of current eutectic gels are poor and the processing process is complicated. Based on this, this study proposed a eutectic gel with excellent adhesion properties that can be photocurable for 3D printing. We designed a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) using acrylic acid as the main monomer, acrylic acid/choline chloride (AA/ChCl) as the eutectic solvent, and dopamine-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (DC) as the nanoscale crosslinking agent. The introduction of DC endows the gel with a denser hydrogen bond network, which can effectively provide energy dissipation and improve the mechanical properties of the gel. The introduction of mussel-inspired dopamine into the gel network gives the gel good adhesion. The low freezing point and low volatility of PDES give the gel excellent freezing resistance and long-term storage stability. Furthermore, the gel has a sensitivity factor of up to 9.5 (at 0%–900% strain), showing excellent strain sensing performance. In addition, the gel can not only realize the customization of various complex structures through digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology, but also the manufactured wearable devices can complete the accurate sensing of various strain signals of the human body. Therefore, the combination of multi-performance compatible eutectic gel materials and photocurable 3D printing technology will provide a new idea for the design and manufacture of flexible wearable devices. Graphical Preparation and properties of 3D printed eutectic gels crosslinked by dopamine-graftednano-cellulose.

Cardiovascular disease (CAD) is a major global public health issue, with mortality rates being significantly impacted by cold temperatures. Stable and reliable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring in cold environments is crucial for early detection and treatment of CAD. However, existing skin sensor struggle to balance freeze resistance, breathability, flexibility, conductivity and adhesion at cold temperatures. Here, we introduce a solvent cross-linking strategy and an in situ transfer method to prepare ultrathin bioionic gels, featuring a freezing point below −80 °C and a thickness of only 12.6 μm. The strong and abundant interactions between the ionic liquid solvent and the zwitterionic polymer effectively suppress low-temperature crystallization, forming a toughened and highly adhesive network structure. This network enables the in situ formation of an ultrathin morphology, which can be seamlessly transferred onto various substrates. Furthermore, the solvent-cross-linked network maintains a large interpolymer chain spacing, facilitating rapid ion transport pathways. Even at subzero temperatures, the gel maintains its multifunctionality, demonstrating tissue-like softness (34.6 kPa), high ionic conductivity (10.06 mS cm–1), excellent stretchability (360%), high transparency, robust adhesive strength (175.3 kPa) and interfacial toughness (1146 J m–2). Integrated into a flexible wearable device, the ultrathin gel ensures excellent skin conformity, user comfort, and high signal-to-noise ECG signal acquisition. Leveraging an artificial neural network, the system analyzes bradycardia ECG signals and achieves 96.88% accuracy in arrhythmia detection under cold conditions. This bioionic gel-based system presents a promising solution for early CAD diagnosis and prediction in extreme environments.

Gel-based strain sensors could be capable of converting external stimuli into electrical signals to realize real-time monitoring, leading to the flourishing development in flexible wearable device . However, how to trade off robust mechanical properties against strain sensitivity is still a great challenge. Herein, the MXene-PAM/SA-Ca 2+ double-network (DN) organohydrogel was prepared by a facile one-pot and two-step method. The formation of physical interaction between Ca 2+ , glycerol and polymer chain endowed the DN organohydrogel with excellent stretchability (1170%), robust fracture strength (540 kPa) and high toughness (3.8 MJ m −3 ). At the same time, the intrinsic characteristic of glycerol also brought anti-drying and low-temperature resistance to it. Due to doping MXene , the organohydrogel-based strain sensor performed outstanding sensitivity with GF = 1.21, especially a linearity trend in the wide strain range of 0–600%. Similarly, the sensor exhibited satisfactory response time (0.6 s) to external stimuli and accurately capture the motion signal of human, providing a gigantic potential in the fields of e-skin.

In recent years, flexible wearable electronic devices have received extensive attention in the fields of human health monitoring, bioelectronic interfaces, and human–computer interaction. Conductive hydrogels have gradually become the best candidate materials for flexible wearable electronic devices, due to their good conductive properties, elastic modulus similar to natural skin tissue, and adjustable mechanical properties. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol/poly (acrylic acid- co -acrylamide)/polydopamine-decorated carbon nanotubes (PVA/P(AA- co -AM)/PDA@CNTs) composite hydrogel was prepared by free radical copolymerization and in situ composite methods. The double-physical cross-linked network composed of PVA and P(AA- co -AM) formed an efficient energy dissipation system. The composite hydrogel exhibits appropriate mechanical properties (tensile strength of 1.21 ± 0.04 MPa, elongation at break of 221.28 ± 2.04%, toughness of 1.22 ± 0.36 MJ m −3 ). PDA@CNTs formed conductive pathways in the composite hydrogel, which endowed hydrogel with electrical conductivity (3.84 S/m) and high sensitivity (gauge factor of 1.6). The wearable sensor based on composite hydrogel can monitor the joint movement and muscle movement of the human body. PVA/P(AA- co -AM)/PDA@CNTs composite hydrogel has great application prospects in the field of flexible wearable electronic devices for human movement monitoring. Graphical abstract

Traditional conductive fabrics are prepared by the synthesis of conductive polymers and the coating modification of metals or carbon black conductive materials. However, the conductive fabrics cause a significant decline in performance after washing or mechanical wear, which limits their application. Moreover, the single function of the traditional conductive fabric is also the reason that limits its wide application. In order to prepare a wearable, stable, high-performance, washable, multifunctional conductive fabric, we have carried out related research. In this work, polydopamine was used as a bonding layer, an adsorption reduction layer, and a protective layer to improve the bonding between silver nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the polyester fabric surface so as to prepare a multifunctional conductive fabric with a high-stability “sandwich” structure, in which a Ag-NPS@CNT structure acting as an intermediate conductive layer formed on the inner layer PDA@CNT by electroless silver plating and the outermost layer PDA@CNT coated on the surface of the intermediate conductive layer by the impregnation-drying method. The sheet resistance of an E-Fabric can reach 2.11 Ω/□ due to the uniform and dense conductive path formed by the special structure Ag-NPs@CNT. At a low voltage of 1.5 V, the E-Fabric can reach 117 °C in 50 s and remain stable. The electrical conductivity and current heating properties of the E-Fabric remain good even after multiple washing or bending tests. Due to its stable and outstanding electrical conductivity, the E-Fabric has an electromagnetic shielding efficiency (SET) of 35.3 dB in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz). In addition, E-Fabric-based spin-coated poly(methyl methacrylate) or polydimethylsiloxane electrodes exhibit excellent performance in nanogenerators. Through the low-frequency friction of the human body, transient voltages up to 4 V can be generated from a 2 cm × 2 cm electrode sample. The output power of a single generator can reach about 12 nW/cm2. Therefore, an E-Fabric is considered to have great potential in the fields of electric heating, electromagnetic shielding, and smart wearable devices.

Flexible sensors based on ionogels show great potential in wearable devices because of their compliance and deformability. However, ionogel sensors usually suffer from low mechanical properties and poor sensitivity. Herein, we report a supramolecular ionogel with combined hierarchical dynamic bonds (hydrogen bonds, Zn(II)–carboxylate coordination bonds and Zn–(Al-Hbimcp) (Al-Hbimcp = 2,6-bis((E)-(allylimino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol) coordination bonds) as crosslinking points. The obtained ionogels possess superior mechanical robustness (fracture strength of 21 MPa, Young's modulus of 325 MPa, fracture strain of 1120%, toughness of 102 MJ m−3, fracture energy of 87.7 kJ m−2 and puncture energy of 4570.8 mJ), high ionic conductivity, broad environmental tolerance and self-healing properties. Moreover, inspired by the microstructure and gradient distribution of the finger, we fabricated a soft and hard hybrid bilayer ionogel pressure/temperature sensor with a micro-pyramid structure. The sensor exhibits extraordinary pressure (33.8 kPa−1) and temperature sensitivity (3.79 °C−1), enabling the monitoring function of human heartbeat and breathing. Hence, the designed ionogel sensor has great application prospects in multifunctional flexible wearable devices.
