Outstanding glucose sensing properties of N-doped carbon nanotubes boosted by Co(II) and Cu(II) ions in alkaline electrolytes

Zanling Huang,Shuqi Zhu,Abebe Reda Woldu,Wenhua Gao,Jing-Xin Jian,Paul K. Chu,Qing-Xiao Tong,Liangsheng Hu

Electrochemical glucose detection co-catalyzed by bimetallic ions is carried out by introducing Co(II) and Cu(II) into the alkaline solution. The technique avoids the complicated electrode design and catalyst poisoning. By using nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) loaded on carbon cloth (CC) as the working electrode, the bimetal co-catalytic system achieves a sensitivity of 6,909 mA M −1 cm −2 , a detection limit of 0.4 μM (S/N = 3), as well as good selectivity and stability. By performing systematic electrochemical and structural analysis, the mechanism of Co(II) and Cu(II) co-catalysis for glucose detection in the solution is elucidated. Co(II) supplies the dynamic reaction sites and source of active intermediate (CoOOH), while Cu(II) promotes the formation of CoOOH. The results provide mechanistic insights into bimetal co-catalysis of glucose detection and other electrochemical reactions .

Metal Oxides with Distinctive Valence States in an Electron-Rich Matrix Enable Stable High-Capacity Anodes for Li Ion Batteries

Jipeng Liu,Liwei Dong,Dongjiang Chen,Yupei Han,Yifang Liang,Mengqiu Yang,Jiecai Han,Chunhui Yang,Weidong He

Metal oxides are arguably a promising solution to next-generation high-energy-density anode materials. In particular, molybdenum oxides own high theoretical specific capacity (1117 and 838 mA h g −1 for MoO 3 and MoO 2 , respectively), high chemical stability, and low cost. The low electronic conductivity of MoO 3 limits their charge–discharge rate performances and delithiation capability. By controlling the valence state of MoO x with carbon, partial MoO 3 can be reduced to MoO 2 with low electrical resistance and high-rate capacity. Nonetheless, both molybdenum oxides undergo large-volume expansion/shrinkage and even pulverization in the lithiation/delithiation process. Herein, through a facile pyrolysis method a MoO x /N-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) anode with controllable valence states of Mo is designed. The high conductivity and flexibility of the NCNT matrix form a stable MoO 2 /MoO 3 anode with finely matched lattices and coordinated 3d electrons. Owing to molecularly close contact between electron-rich CNTs and MoO x , MoO x /NCNTs own a high conductivity of 0.36 S cm −1 , and mitigate the volume expansion in charges and discharges. The MoO 3 /MoO 2 /NCNTs anode delivers an unparalleled high gravimetric capacity of 970 mA h g −1 , over 100-cycle stability and high rate capability.

Facile Synthesis of 1T-Phase MoS2 Nanosheets on N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes towards Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Kunjie Wang,Jiahui Zhang,Yachen Ye,Hongbin Ma,Bingxin Liu,Peng Zhang,Benhua Xu

1T-phase molybdenum disulfide is supposed to be one of the non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction with the highest potential. Herein, 1T-MoS2nanosheets were anchored on N-doped carbon nanotubes by a simple hydrothermal process with the assistance of urea promotion transition of the 1T phase. Based on the 1T-MoS2nanosheets anchored on the N-doped carbon nanotubes structures, 1T-MoS2nanosheets can be said to have highly exposed active sites from edges and the basal plane, and the dopant N in carbon nanotubes can promote electron transfer between N-doped carbon nanotubes and 1T-MoS2nanosheets. With the synergistic effects of this structure, the excellent 1T-MoS2/ N-doped carbon nanotubes catalyst has a small overpotential of 150 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a relatively low Tafel slope of 63 mV dec−1, and superior stability. This work proposes a new strategy to design high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts.Keywords:1T-MoS2nanosheets;N-doped carbon nanotubes;hydrogen evolution reaction;water splitting;synergy effects

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotube Confined Co–Nx Sites for Selective Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Compounds

Wanbing Gong,Yue Lin,Chun Chen,Mohammad Al-Mamun,Hai-Sheng Lu,Guozhong Wang,Haimin Zhang,Huijun Zhao

Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and developing high-performance nonprecious selective hydrogenation (SH) catalysts will enable the use of biomass to replace rapidly diminishing fossil resources. This work utilizes ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes to confine Co nanoparticles (NPs) with Co–N x active sites as a high-performance SH catalyst. The confined Co NPs with Co–N x exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward a wide range of biomass-derived compounds. Such active sites can selectively hydrogenate aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl, and nitro groups of biomass-derived compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity. The reported approach could be adopted to create other forms of catalytically active sites from other nonprecious metals.

Ultrastable nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles for magnetic solid-phase extraction of okadaic acid from aquatic samples

Hui Chen,Chuanhui Huang,Wenming Zhang,Qingqing Ding,Jia Gao,Lan Zhang

An easy-prepared adsorbent with high stable and good dispersibility is especially valuable for the development of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) techniques. In this study, magnetic nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube cages (N-CNTCs) were synthesized via direct carbonization of cobalt (II)-containing metal-organic frameworks. During carbonization, cobalt ions inside the MOFs were converted into magnetic functional nanoparticles of N-CNTCs. Simultaneously, large amounts of nitrogen, originating from the organic ligands, were doped into the carbon framework. This unique structure gave the N-CNTCs excellent chemical stability, high affinity, and good dispersibility. The synthesized magnetic N-CNTCs were then used for MSPE of okadaic acid (OA) from aquatic samples. A simple, efficient, and sensitive method for detecting and quantitating OA was developed by combining the above sample pretreatment technique with high-performance liquid chromatography -tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The resulting method boasts a linear dynamic range of 3.0–1000.0 pg mL −1 with good linearity (R 2  ≥ 0.9994). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.3 pg mL −1 and 3.0 pg mL −1 , respectively. Several shellfish and seafood samples were analyzed using the developed method, showing satisfactory recoveries (82.0–107.0%) and relative standard deviations (<4.5%). The developed method was also used to investigate the OA distribution in crab tissues. Our results demonstrate that magnetic N-CNTCs are promising adsorbents for providing reliable support for the early warning and tracing to the source of algae toxins.

Novel tungsten phosphide embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes: A portable and renewable monitoring platform for anticancer drug in whole blood

Haifeng Zhou,Guoxia Ran,Jean-Francois Masson,Chan Wang,Yuan Zhao,Qijun Song

Biosensors based on converting the concentration of analytes in complex samples into single electrochemical signals are attractive candidates as low cost, high-throughput, portable and renewable sensor platforms. Here, we describe a simple but practical analytical device for sensing an anticancer drug in whole blood, using the detection of methotrexate (MTX) as a model system. In this biosensor, a novel carbon-based composite, tungsten phosphide embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (WP/N-CNT), was fixed to the electrode surface that supported redox cycling. The electronic transmission channel in nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNT) and the synergistic effect of uniform distribution tungsten phosphide (WP) ensured that the electrode materials have outstanding electrical conductivity and catalytic performance. Meanwhile, the surface electronic structure also endows its surprisingly reproducible performance. To demonstrate portable operation for MTX sensing, screen printing electrodes (SPE) was modified with WP/N-CNT. The sensor exhibited low detection limits (45 nM), wide detection range (0.01–540 μM), good selectivity and long-term stability for the determination of MTX. In addition, the technique was successfully applied for the determination of MTX in whole blood.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes enhanced Fenton chemistry: Role of near-free iron(III) for sustainable iron(III)/iron(II) cycles

Chenying Zhou,Peng Zhou,Minglu Sun,Yang Liu,Heng Zhang,Zhaokun Xiong,Juan Liang,Xiaoguang Duan,Bo Lai

The sluggish kinetics of Fe(II) recovery strongly impedes the scientific progress of Fenton reaction (Fe(II)/H 2 O 2 ) towards practical application. Here, we propose a novel mechanism that metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) can enhance Fenton chemistry with H 2 O 2 as electron donors by elevating the oxidation potential of Fe(III). NCNT remarkably promotes the circulation of Fe(III)/Fe(II) to produce hydroxyl radical ( • OH) with excellent stability for multiple usages (more than 10 cycles) in the NCNT/Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system. Although carbonyl on NCNT can act as the electron supplier for Fe(III) reduction, the behavior of NCNT is distinct from common reductants such as hydroxylamine and boron. Electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculation unveil that nitrogen sites of NCNT can weakly bind with Fe(III) to elevate the oxidation potential of Fe(III) (named near-free Fe(III), primarily FeOH 2+ ) at pH ranging from 2.0 to 4.0. Without inputs of external stimulations or electron sacrificers, near-free Fe(III) can promote H 2 O 2 induced reduction of Fe(III) to initiate Fenton chain reactions for long-lasting generation of • OH. To our delight, it is a common property of N-doped carbon materials (e.g., graphene, carbon nanofibers, and acetylene black), our research thus provides a novel, sustainable, and green strategy for promoting Fenton chemistry.

Meaningful improvements on structural-thermal-electronic properties of copper based on 3D nitrogen (N) doped-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) interface fabricated by nano-self-assembly-sintering-modification

Ye Xianzhu,Li Ming,Li Daoru,Li Bin,Zhang Yafei

The development of a material with high ampacity to allow current to flow through narrow channels is one of the most promising ways to address the progressive miniaturization and light weight of electronic devices. The efficient synergistic electron transmission by compounding 1D/2D carbon materials with a metal matrix via various methods in recent years has attracted great research interest due to their potential utilization in electronics. In this study, a copper (Cu) matrix with a 3D nitrogen (N) doped-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) interface with prominent physical features is reported and fabricated, involving the use of nano-self-assembly-heat-modification by adopting polyethyleneimine-nano-Cu and carboxyl MCNTs. Young's modulus was enhanced from 28.8 to 92.2 GPa due to a higher efficiency of stress transfer and interfacial adhesion, and the hardness fitted by Gauss distribution was increased by ∼69% (∼39.7 HRC). Toward the stability after a modification of vacuum reduction sintering, the initial oxidation temperature (T d ) was increased largely from 232 °C to 286 °C, and thermal conductivity was enhanced eminently from 358 to 548 W/(m K) due to more efficient electron/phonon motion. Moreover, synergistic electron transmission endowed the final Cu-N-CNTs with a higher ampacity (7.23–16.98 × 10 4  A cm −2 ), which could be further observed by the time-evolution of electrical resistivity under a constant current density. The improved physical features state that the assembled 3D N-CNTs interface possesses prominent characteristics and potential for directing the deep applications of 1D or 2D carbon materials in electronic science.

Cobalt Single Atoms Immobilized N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Enhanced Bifunctional Catalysis toward Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Sobia Dilpazir,Hongyan He,Zehui Li,Meng Wang,Peilong Lu,Rongji Liu,Zhujun Xie,Denglei Gao,Guangjin Zhang

Novel Co atoms immobilized carbon nanotubes (CoSAs@CNTs) are synthesized by structural engineering of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) upon treatment with dicyandiamide (DCD). A unique morphology and promising electrochemical performance are shown by the Co atoms immobilized CNTs. The electrocatalyst remarkably exhibits a highly positive onset potential of 0.99 V and half-wave potential of 0.86 V, both even more positive than the commercial Pt/C catalyst, and the current density is also greater than that of the Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media. A decent performance is observed in acidic media also. The electrocatalyst is extraordinarily stable to harsh environments. A promising performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is demonstrated by the electrocatalyst, while for bifunctional electrocatalysis a small overvoltage of 0.78 V is observed with onset potential at the lower overpotential of 300 mV announcing the advantage of its usage for practical energy conversion and storage systems. This novel study may provide a new road map for fuel cell technology.

Curvature-dependent activity of CO2 electrocatalytic reduction on NCNT@Ni

Xinling Zhang,Yongxiao Tuo,Qing Lu,Yuanyuan Liu,Jiabing Luo,Hui Zhang,Jingyuan Shang,Yan Zhou,Jun Zhang

The impact of carbon material curvature is often underestimated in studies of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). To clarify its role, we tuned the diameter of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) by controlling the size of embedded Ni nanoparticles (50 to 120 nm), in which the Ni-modified C-N species has been identified as an efficient site for CO 2 RR to CO. We found that the FE CO and TOF increase with the curvature of NCNT, particularly in the high potential window that is the diffusion-limited region. This enhancement is attributed to accelerated CO desorption since the electrophobic nature of high-curvature C-N defects reduces hybridization between *CO and active sites. These insights highlight curvature engineering as a promising strategy to enhance CO current density in carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Cobalt Nanoparticles Encapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Assembled on Carbon Cloth for Efficient Electroreduction of Nitrite to Ammonia

Ye Li,Xuping Sun,Huiyong Wang,Baozhan Zheng,Juan Du

Electrochemical nitrite (NO2–) reduction provides an alternative pathway for both sustainable ammonia (NH3) synthesis and reutilization of NO2– pollutants, but this process requires high activity and selective catalysts. In this work, cobalt nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes supported on carbon cloth (Co@NCNT/CC) as a low-cost electrocatalyst can efficiently catalyze NO2–-to-NH3 conversion. Such Co@NCNT/CC shows exceptional electrocatalytic performance, achieving a maximum NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 94.9% with an NH3 yield of 365.1 μmol h–1 cm–2 at −0.3 V. Remarkably, the assembled Zn–NO2– battery with the Co@NCNT/CC cathode exhibits a peak power density of 4.4 mW cm–2 and a satisfactory NH3 yield of 141.5 μmol h–1 cm–2.
