Tannin-inspired superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic polypropylene membrane for effective oil/water emulsions separation

You-Zhi Song,Xin Kong,Xue Yin,Yin Zhang,Chuang-Chao Sun,Jia-Jia Yuan,Baoku Zhu,Li-Ping Zhu

In this work, a novel two-pot coating process that facilely transform polypropylene (PP) microfiltration membrane hydrophobicity into superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity was reported. Tannic acid (TA) and ferric ions (Fe III ) were selected as organic ligand and inorganic cross-linker, respectively. Compared with the membrane modified by the one-pot method, the two-pot treated substrate has uniformly distributed coatings, better wettability, higher water permeability (7092   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 , which is 4.5 times higher than that of the one-pot modified membrane), and excellent oil/water emulsions separation performance. This treatment only took about 15   min and the underwater superoleophobicity was well maintained even after rigorous long-term washing operation. More importantly, both the remaining solutions of TA and Fe III could be recycled and reused easily in the next two-pot coating process. Such a rapid, green, and cost-effective modification method highlights its potential for practical application in oil/water emulsions separation.

Green and rapid fabrication of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic coatings for super anti-crude oil fouling and crude oil-water separation

Wenting Zhou,Xinming Hu,Bin Zhan,Shuyi Li,Zhibiao Chen,Yan Liu

The development of surfaces with super anti-crude oil-fouling behavior and crude oil-water separation properties is still a global challenge owing to the high viscosity of crude oil. Herein, superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surfaces were successfully prepared by a simple, green and environmentally friendly one-step dip coating method. In the whole process, microcrystalline cellulose with hydrophilic hydroxyl functional groups was introduced into the coating with the help of inorganic adhesives, water was the only solvent, and no other organic solvents or surface modifiers was added. Besides being highly resistant to low viscosity oils and achieving effective oil-water separation (more than 98.3% separation efficiency after 30 cycles), the surface effectively resisted crude oil adhesion and achieved high viscosity crude oil-water separation. In addition, the underwater oil contact angle can still reach 147.5° and 152.5° after 20 cycles of sandpaper friction tests and 50 cycles of finger pressure tests, respectively, which indicates excellent durability. Furthermore, the method can achieve excellent superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity on varieties of substrates (such as copper foil, aluminum sheet and glass), showing very extensive applicability. It is expected that such fabrication strategy can provide a low cost, green and environmentally friendly approach to construct a series of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surfaces to achieve super anti-crude oil-fouling and (crude) oil-water separation.

Lignin: Excellent hydrogel swelling promoter used in cellulose aerogel for efficient oil/water separation

Zhenrong Tan,Ling Hu,Dongjie Yang,Dafeng Zheng,Xueqing Qiu

Hypothesis Super-hydrophilic/underwater super-oleophobic materials composed of biomass show great advantages for the treatment of oily wastewater due to their inherent fouling resistance. However, the development of three-dimensional materials from biomass for oil–water separation is still a challenge. It is universally acknowledged that constructing a rough structure on the surface of hydrophilic substrates would significantly improve the underwater oleophobicity and oil–water separation performance. Experiments In this work, a three-dimensional lignin/cellulose aerogel (LCA) was developed through sol–gel method with freeze-drying. The rough microstructure and 3D interconnected network composed of lignin and cellulose impart excellent underwater superoleophobicity to LCA for efficient oil–water separation. Findings The introduction of lignin to cellulose aerogel could effectively enhance its surface roughness , water permeation speed and underwater oil contact angle. Especially, the swelling properties of the hydrogel could be regulated by modulating the content of lignin, which could further control the pore size of aerogels to optimize the separation flux. The as-prepared aerogel showed remarkable performance in separating various oil–water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions, with a separation flux of 7646 ± 167 L·m −2 ·h −1 and oil rejection rate >99 %. These excellent properties combined with its facile fabrication make LCA a promising candidate for the treatment of oily wastewater.

Polyhydroxy phenolic resin coated polyetherimide membrane with biomimetic super-hydrophily for high-efficient oil–water separation

Yunjie Hao,Xiaoyu Guo,Jiao Li,Hongqiang Wang,Fang Liu,Lilan Huang,Haibin Sun,Xue Guo

In terms of treating the problem of oily wastewater, membrane separation technology has always been a simple and efficient method of oil–water emulsion separation. Inspired by the hydrophilic bumps of the desert beetle, the polyetherimide (PEI) fiber membrane with super-hydrophilic/underwater super-oleophobic properties was prepared by electrospinning and subsequent seeded aggregation strategy of resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde (F). The membrane (PEI@RF) demonstrates pearl necklace-like structures and good antifouling properties, oil–water separation performances, as well as good stabilities in a variety of environments (immersed in water at high/low temperature, and in acid/alkali/salt solutions). More importantly, the as-prepared membrane exhibits excellent performance for various kinds of oil–water mixtures separation, and the corresponding separation fluxes and efficiencies are above 2600 L/m 2 ·h and 99 %, respectively.

Research on the application of modified cotton fabric as an anti-oil-fouling material in oil-water separation and heavy metal removal

Xiaohong Li,Junjie Qin,Ying Chen,Dong Chen,Quan Wang,Yong Chen

Cotton fabric (CF) modified with silica (SiO 2 ), chitosan (CS), and sodium alginate (SA), referred to as PDA/CF/SiO 2 -CS-SA or PCF/Si-CSA, exhibits both superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. This dual-function material demonstrates an underwater-oil contact angle (UOCA) exceeding 159.8°. The fabric's surface has minimal oil adhesion, allowing crude oil to be easily removed by water rinsing. When used to treat simulated wastewater containing Cu(II) and oil (10 mg/L Cu(II)), PCF/Si-CSA achieved an oil/water separation efficiency of 99.0%, water flux of 32900 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and Cu(II) removal rate of 91.3 %. The surface of the PCF/Si-CSA of adsorbed Cu(II) leached with a dilute HCl solution, and the Cu(II) desorption rate reached 93 % within 150 s. PCF/Si-CSA shows superoleophobicity under water (UOCA>150°) after 1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 , 0.5 mol/L NaOH, saturated NaCl immersion for 20 days, and abrasion by 500# sandpaper 300 times. Obviously, the dual-function PCF/Si-CSA exhibited good performance for simultaneous oil/water separation and heavy-metal removal.

Facile preparation and modification of robust BiOCl/Bi2O3 coated mesh with superwetting and anti-biofouling performance for oil/water separation and wastewater treatment

Chunping Su,Mengxi Cheng,Hong Gao,Jun Li,Rong Chen

A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh was successfully prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal method, which exhibits outstanding mechanical stability against sandpaper friction and resistance to water erosion and corrosive liquids. Notably, it demonstrates excellent oil/water separation efficiency and photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation while preventing the adhesion of microorganisms to the coating surface, endowing anti-biofouling properties to the mesh. To achieve simultaneous separation of oil from water as well as degradation of soluble dye and bacteria pollutants in a single device, a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh was also prepared using surface modification with octadecanethiol. Subsequently, a dual-layer mesh (DLM) was obtained by overlaying the superhydrophilic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coating onto the superhydrophobic BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coating. The resulting dual-layer mesh with its superwetting properties enables concurrent oil–water separation, photodegradation of organic contaminants and photocatalytic bactericidal activity within trapped sewage. Furthermore, this versatile BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh can serve as a template for fabricating other bismuth-containing micro/nanostructure coatings with remarkable wetting properties. It is anticipated that such a versatile BiOCl/Bi 2 O 3 coated mesh possessing superior superwetting properties, robust mechanical durability, excellent anti-biofouling properties and outstanding photocatalytic activity will find promising applications in complex oily sewage purification systems.

A cellulose sponge with robust superhydrophilicity and under-water superoleophobicity for highly effective oil/water separation

Gang Wang,Yi He,He Wang,Lin Zhang,Quanyao Yu,Shusen Peng,Xuedong Wu,Tianhui Ren,Zhixiang Zeng,Qunji Xue

We fabricate a cellulose sponge with stable superoleophobicity (θoil > 150°) under water and superhydrophilic wettability (θwater ≈ 0°) under oil without any further chemical modification for oil–water emulsion separation. The cellulose sponge shows superoleophobicity to various oils under water and possesses stable superoleophobicity in corrosive liquids like strong acid, alkali and salt solution. The sponge is made from the dissolution and regeneration of cellulose powder which is green, low cost, simple and easy to scale up. The natural hydrophilicity of the cellulose ensures its excellent under-water superoleophobicity and antifouling properties. The double layer construction of different pore sizes, which contains a top-layer with a pore size lower than 1 μm and a sub-layer with a pore size larger than 3 μm, ensures that the oil phase is resisted and the water phase easily and quickly permeates the sponge. Our cellulose sponge can separate oil–water mixtures, with >99.94% separation efficiency, solely using gravity and has excellent antifouling properties.

Environmentally friendly kaolin-coated meshes with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity for oil/water separation

Yujie Wang,Si Luo,Anwei Chen,Cui Shang,Liang Peng,Jihai Shao,Zhangyang Liu

Due to the increase in oil spill accidents and discharge of oily wastewater, it is urgent to develop functional materials to separate oil from oil/water mixtures. In this work, the kaolin-coated meshes were fabricated by a facile coating method to construct a micro-hierarchical surface and controllable pore size for the separation of various oil/water mixtures. The obtained meshes exhibits super-hydrophilicity, underwater super-oleophobicity with underwater oil contact angle >150° and outstanding oil/water separation efficiency above 99% and flux up to 190 L m −2 h −1 under gravity force. Moreover, the mesh still maintained high stability and good separation efficiency under corrosive condition and recycling. Furthermore, the mesh can also remove water from the water-in-oil emulsion. Results from this study are meaningful for the development of low-cost, and eco-friendly materials with high efficiency and mechanical robustness for oily wastewater treatment and open a new way for high-increment utilization of kaolin mineral.

In situ metal-polyphenol interfacial assembly tailored superwetting PES/SPES/MPN membranes for oil-in-water emulsion separation

Ruoxi Wang,Xueting Zhao,Youyou Lan,Lifen Liu,Congjie Gao

Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes have recently attracted increased attention in oily wastewater treatment because of their potential to promote membrane permeability and minimize membrane fouling . Despite recent advances, the manipulation of membrane superwettability is usually achieved by coating functional layers on commercial hydrophobic porous substrates. The direct fabrication of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic microporous membranes still remains a challenge. In this work, we provide a new in situ metal-polyphenol interfacial assembly strategy and prepare a new type of superwetting PES/SPES/MPN membranes. In the phase inversion of membrane formation, the coordination assembly of tannic acid (TA) and transition metal ions takes place alone with the solvent/nonsolvent exchange, resulting in the in situ deposition of metal-polyphenol networks (MPNs) on as-prepared polyether sulfone (PES)/sulfonated polyether sulfone (SPES) membranes. The PES/SPES/MPN membranes exhibit hierarchical surfaces and bi-continuous pores, and the in situ deposited MPNs provide hydrophilic bases. Among them, the PES/SPES/TA-Fe 3+ membrane showed the highest superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Thanks to the excellent superhydrophilicity, the water flux of PES/SPES/TA-Fe 3+ membrane can reach 4423 Lm −2 h −1 . Moreover, the PES/SPES/TA-Fe 3+ membrane exhibits high-performance for oil-in-water emulsion separation with high flux (>1500 Lm −2 h −1 ), excellent oil rejection (>99.5%) and reliable enhanced antifouling and recycling performance. This study provides a novel and facile strategy for the direct fabrication of superwetting microporous membranes, and predicts the potential application of PES/SPES/MPN membranes in oily wastewater treatment.

Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic nanofibrous membrane for separation of oil/water emulsions

Jingjing Wang,Luming Wang

Membranes with special wettability have attracted increasing interest for oil/water separation. Herein, the cellulose-based nanofibrous membrane was fabricated in an aqueous system by an electrospinning technique. The membrane was then modified successively through coating polydopamine and polyethyleneimine on the surface, which endowed the membrane with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic character. The composition and morphology of the resultant membrane were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscope, respectively. Surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions were used to evaluate the separation performance of the membrane at different pH values. It was found that the membrane displayed the excellent antifouling property and separation performance for all different emulsions, with separation efficiency above 99.1% due to the development of a hydration layer underwater on the membrane surface. The reusability study indicated that the modification coating was stable enough to effectively separate emulsions after recycling at least 20 times. The developed nanofibrous membrane, as well as the corresponding modification strategy, enriched the application of membranes with special wettability in the field of oil spills and oily wastewater treatments.

WO3/TiO2 superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane for effective separation of oil-in-water emulsions

Bo Wang,Chao Chen,Hongtao Liu,Bingbing Xia,Yinan Fan,Tianchi Chen

Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) decorated commercial stainless steel meshes (SSM 304) were fabricated by chemical deposition and dip coating. WO 3 and TiO 2 particles were firmly and uniformly coated on the membrane surfaces, forming rough micro-nano double structures with underwater superoleophobicity, large contact angles and low oil-adhesion characteristic. Furthermore, the as-prepared membranes achieved effective oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions separation with high efficiency up to 98.5% or more. The separation of O/W emulsions was easily implemented under gravity with water fluxes of >200 L m −2  h −1 or low pressure with water fluxes up to 1300 L m −2  h −1 or more. In addition, the superhydrophilic membranes with WO 3 /TiO 2 coatings were demonstrated for high oil rejection, stable underwater superoleophobic properties after abrasion treatment and steady water permeation flux after several cycles.

A superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic chitosan–TiO2 composite membrane for fast oil-in-water emulsion separation

Yanqing Du,Yujiang Li,Tao Wu

Oil/water separation has become a worldwide challenge due to large volumes of industrial oily wastewater and frequent oil spill accidents, which constitute an enormous threat to human and biological safety. Herein, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic composite membrane was fabricated using the vacuum-assisted filtration technique of assembly of chitosan (CS) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) on a cellulose acetate membrane for emulsified oil separation. The hydrophilic chitosan–TiO2 (CST) composite and nanoscale hierarchical structure are beneficial for forming a water layer that can repel the infiltration of oil droplets into the membrane. The modified membrane demonstrated an excellent flux up to 6002.5 L m−2 h−1 for hexadecane-in-water emulsion, which is one order of magnitude higher than traditional filtration membranes. Furthermore, the separation efficiency for all of the emulsified oils is above 97%, indicating superior oil/water separation performance. Most importantly, the modified membrane can maintain underwater superoleophobicity even in corrosive aqueous media, including strongly acidic, strongly alkaline, and highly saline solutions. It is expected that the chitosan–TiO2 composite membrane can be potentially useful in treating oily wastewater from industry and daily life.
