Investigating the effects of g-C3N4/Graphene oxide nanohybrids on corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Ziyang Zhou,Xiaohong Ji,Sepideh Pourhashem,Jizhou Duan,Baorong Hou

Two dimensional nanomaterials including graphene oxide (GO), graphitic carbon nitride (CN), and their nanohybrids (GO@CN) are used for enhancing the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings. The nanomaterials functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane are loaded in the waterborne epoxy matrix by solution mixing method through probe-sonication and mechanical mixing. The corrosion resistance of the pure waterborne epoxy (PE) and the nanocomposite coatings in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution is evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and salt spray test; revealing that the epoxy coating loaded with 0.1 wt% silane functionalized GO@CN nanohybrid has the highest chemical stability and corrosion resistance, due to the well-distribution of the nanohybrid in the polymer matrix. This research exhibits the importance of developing nanocomposite coatings based on two dimensional nanohybrids to overcome the shortcomings of the nanomaterials and to simultaneously utilize from their advantages in a coating system.

Monodispersed Nanodiamonds for Enhanced Anticorrosion of Waterborne Epoxy Coatings

Xinchen Pan,Yunfan Zhang,Ying Zhang,Mingyu Yang,Zhanwei Yang,Yakun Liu,Ping Zhang,Zhiwei Han,Xin Wang,Yongsheng Fu

Nanodiamonds (NDs) prepared by the explosion method possess very large surface energies, resulting in serious agglomerates, limiting their further application. Herein, we employed the strong shearing action of hydroxyl ion (OH–) to induce the hydrolysis of esters between the ND primary particles, generating the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, breaking hard agglomeration of NDs, and successfully constructed electrical double layers on the surface of NDs via deprotonation of surface oxygen-containing groups induced by the strong shearing action of hydroxyl ion (OH–), leading to a significant increase of zeta potential absolute value (−54.2 mV), achieving the long-term stable (200 days) monodispersion of NDs (m-NDs). The as-obtained m-NDs, as efficient nanofillers, were added into the waterborne epoxy (WEP) to produce a composite coating of m-NDs/WEP, displaying a considerable improvement in anticorrosion performance. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that the |Z|f = 0.01 Hz of m-NDs/WEP is nearly 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure WEP after 168 h of immersion. The excellent anticorrosion performance of m-NDs/WEP can be ascribed to the excellent compatibility, electrical insulation property, and physical barrier behavior of m-NDs, inhibiting the infiltration of corrosive medium. The molecular dynamics simulation reveals that m-NDs have good barrier properties against a corrosive medium.

Mechanical-induced functionalization of graphene with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose toward enhancing anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Wang Rui,Yi Hongling

Non-covalent modification of graphene is prepared by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose via ball milling. Adsorption and thermogravimetric analyzer (TG) indicate interaction of graphene with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Particle size and zeta potential results show sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with high DS play more role in assisting stabilization of graphene dispersion. The adsorption of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose onto graphene is inhibited under acidic conditions and the dispersion stability deteriorates sharply. Under neutral and alkaline conditions, the dispersions maintain stable. Embedding a small percentage of well-dispersed graphene nanosheets (CGr1.5%) in waterborne epoxy coating has remarkably improved anticorrosion performance, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of barrier properties of well-dispersed graphene nanosheets and CMC in the epoxy matrix. Open circuit potential (OCP), Tafel and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis confirmed that the corrosion rate exhibited by composite coatings with 1.5 wt% graphene is lower than that of neat epoxy coating.

Incorporation of NH4+ in flower-like zinc phosphate pigment to enhance the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy

Yulin Zhang,Xiteng Li,Dongjie Yang,Hu Cai,Ziqi Ma,Yu Zhang,Suihan Cui,Zhongzhen Wu

Herein, the three-dimensional (3D) flower-like pigments of micro-nano scaled zinc phosphate (FZP) and ammonium zinc phosphate (FNZP) were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis method for improving the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating. The micro-structures, chemical compositions and corrosion resistance of the as-obtained specimens were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS and EIS, respectively. The results indicated that the 3D flower-like FZP and FNZP pigments were comprised of self-assembled nano-micro sheets with an average thickness of 20 nm ∼ 100 nm. Moreover, the remarkable enhancements of compactness and anticorrosion performance, especially for the FNZP-incorporated coating, were principally contributed to the well dispersibility and favourable solubility, which lengthened the permeation pathway and promoted the formation of passivation film.

Anticorrosive reinforcement of waterborne epoxy coating on Q235 steel using NZ/BNNS nanocomposites

Shan Wan,Huikai Chen,Xiaoze Ma,Lijuan Chen,Kang Lei,Bokai Liao,Zehua Dong,Xinpeng Guo

The 5-aminotetrazole@ZIF-7@zinc gluconate/boron nitride nanosheets (NZ/BNNS) nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile one-pot method for anticorrosive reinforcement of waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating. The electrochemical tests and scratch tests show that the incorporation of NZ/BNNS nanocomposite can significantly improve the corrosion protection performance of WEP coating by the synergetic effects of passive and active protection. The impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz of WEP NZ/BNNS coating is about 1–1.5 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure WEP coating during the 288 h immersion corrosion test. The enhanced passive protection mainly derives from the two-dimensional structure and impermeability of NZ/BNNS. NZ/BNNS nanocomposites can prolong the diffusion path of corrosive medium. UV–vis spectra indicate that 5-aminotetrazole inhibitor encapsulated in NZ is stimuli-responsively released under acidic conditions. After the intrusion of corrosive ions on Q235 carbon steel, the hydrolysis of iron ions induces local acidification. NZ nanocontainers dissociate under acidic condition and release the corrosion inhibitors . The adsorption of corrosion inhibitors on the substrate then provides the active protection. Relevant corrosion protection mechanism has been proposed.

Effect of nitrogen-doped carbon dots on the anticorrosion properties of waterborne epoxy coatings

Siming Ren,Mingjun Cui,Haichao Zhao,Liping Wang

In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) are prepared by solvothermal method and the effect of NCDs on the anticorrosion property of waterborne epoxy (EP) is investigated. Scanning probe microscopy results show that the size of the NCDs is about 4–6 nm. In addition, the anticorrosion property of NCD-incorporated waterborne epoxy coatings is investigated via electrochemical techniques and scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical results demonstrate that the impedance modulus of 2.0% NCDs/EP is 364 times higher than that of blank EP after 800 h of immersion, indicating significant enhancement in the anticorrosion property of waterborne epoxy coating. The reason is that NCDs with lots of surface functional groups can connect with waterborne epoxy to suppress enlargement of the pores, and reduce the diffusion of oxygen in the coating, thus cutting off the connection between the substrate and oxygen, and delaying corrosion of the substrate.

Anticorrosive performance of waterborne epoxy coatings containing water-dispersible hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets

Mingjun Cui,Siming Ren,Jia Chen,Shuan Liu,Guangan Zhang,Haichao Zhao,Liping Wang,Qunji Xue

Homogenous dispersion of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets in solvents or in the polymer matrix is crucial to initiate their many applications. Here, homogeneous dispersion of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in epoxy matrix was achieved with a water-soluble carboxylated aniline trimer derivative (CAT − ) as a dispersant, which was attributed to the strong π-π interaction between h-BN and CAT − , as proved by Raman and UV–vis spectra. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis confirmed a random dispersion of h-BN nanosheets in the waterborne epoxy coatings. The deterioration process of water-borne epoxy coating with and without h-BN nanosheets during the long-term immersion in 3.5   wt% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical measurements and water absorption test. Results implied that the introduction of well dispersed h-BN nanosheets into waterborne epoxy system remarkably improved the corrosion protection performance to substrate. Moreover, 1   wt% BN/EP composite coated substrate exhibited higher impedance modulus (1.3   ×   10 6   Ω   cm 2 ) and lower water absorption (4%) than those of pure waterborne epoxy coating coated electrode after long-term immersion in 3.5   wt% NaCl solution, demonstrating its superior anticorrosive performance. This enhanced anticorrosive performance was mainly ascribed to the improved water barrier property of epoxy coating via incorporating homogeneously dispersed h-BN nanosheets.

Functionalized graphene oxide: Carrier for corrosion inhibitor and barrier in waterborne epoxy coatings

Jincan Cui,Zhi Xiong,Hanxun Qiu,Jing LI,Junhe Yang

The physical barrier network in polymer matrix composites can be formed by well-dispersed graphene layers, which efficiently inhibited the diffusion of corrosive molecules and improved the corrosion protection properties of the composite coatings. In this work, hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) was carried by graphene oxide (GO) layers through covalent bonding and dispersed in waterborne epoxy matrix, aiming for the combined effects of chemical inhibition and physical barrier. Epoxy monomer, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), was grafted on GO surfaces before the reaction between GO and HEDP in order to prevent the multiple-linkage of graphene layers by HEDP, while improving the compatibility between graphene fillers and the epoxy matrix. The interlayer spacing between GO layers was enlarged from 0.79 nm to 1.03 nm by the reaction with EGDE. The impedance modulus of the composite coatings was kept above 1.5 × 10 9 Ω cm 2 for five months by adding 0.5 wt% graphene derivatives.

Silane functionalized plasma-treated boron nitride nanosheets for anticorrosive reinforcement of waterborne epoxy coatings

Jiulong Sun,Zhixing Tang,Guozhe Meng,Lin Gu

Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are a two-dimensional material with electrical insulation, thermal conductivity and excellent barrier properties, but they are easy to agglomerate and not easy to modify. To solve this problem, the OH-functionalized BNNSs were prepared in high yield (80.1%) by plasma treatment on the surface of boron nitride, and then was further silylated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) via the reaction of Si-O-H with -OH. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that APTES successfully modified the surface of BNNSs through covalent bonding. The obtained BNNSs@APTES exhibited good compatibility with waterborne epoxy (WEP) resins. In addition, BNNSs@APTES/WEP composite coatings were applied on carbon steel, and their anticorrosion performance was investigated using electrochemical measurements. Results demonstrated that the incorporation of 0.8 wt% BNNSs@APTES significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of WEP coatings via the improved barrier property.

Benzotriazole corrosion inhibitor loaded nanocontainer based on g-C3N4 and hollow polyaniline spheres towards enhancing anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Changhua Li,Chen Zhang,Yi He,Hongjie Li,Yang Zhao,Zhijun Li,Dan Sun,Xiangying Yin

Multi-dimensional composite nanocontainers provided an opportunity to prolong the service life of waterborne self-healing coatings through combining intelligent protection with physical barrier. Herein, we constructed a benzotriazole (BTA) corrosion inhibitor loaded nanocontainer with barrier/controlled release/corrosion inhibition properties by assembling graphitic (g)-C 3 N 4 lamella, hollow polyaniline capsule and outer polydopamine wall. Hollow polyaniline and g-C 3 N 4 lamella with adsorption properties provide effective space and sites for loading BTA corrosion inhibitor. Outer polydopamine wall can not only realize the controlled release of corrosion inhibitor, but also ensure the good compatibility between the composite container and the water-based epoxy resin . In addition, polydopamine (PDA) and polyaniline (PANI) as a container frame can also serve as active inhibitors after the release of corrosion inhibitor to enhance the self-healing protection effect of waterborne coatings. In comparative evaluation, the composite coatings containing BTA-loaded nanocontainers (0.5 wt.%) exhibit obviously physical barrier effect after soaking in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 40 days, and maintains good protective performance after immersion for 80 days. Meanwhile, the artificial scratch experiment verified the effective self-repair protection of the composite container to the coating under the condition of damage. To be sure, it will provide an effective improvement idea for the long-term application of waterborne epoxy coating in marine environment.

Synthesis of PDA-rGO/MoO3 nanohybrids for distinguishable anticorrosion enhancement of waterborne epoxy coating

Ying Zhou,Fengyang Kong,Jiaqing Zhou,Jidan Hu,Guoying Zhu

Waterborne epoxy (WEP) resins have gained considerable attention for their environmentally friendly characteristics. Nevertheless, they are susceptible to substantial failures due to electrochemical corrosion, particularly when the coating is compromised or exposed to harsh corrosion environments. Furthermore, its long-term anticorrosive performance is affected by certain inherent defects. In this study, inspired by the adhesive properties of mussels, polydopamine (PDA) was used as a green binder to integrate graphene oxide (GO), h-M O O 3 , and WEP matrix, creating a uniform three-dimensional (3D) network structure. PDA-modified two-dimensional GO nanosheets can also create a porous carrier capable of loading anticorrosive Mo derivatives, imparting self-healing properties that enhance anti-corrosion performance. The resulting composites exhibited remarkable self-healing ability due to the unique design of the PDA-rGO porous structure infused with anticorrosive MoO 3 . Subsequently, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy were used to confirm the PDA-rGO/MoO 3 nanostructure. The results confirmed the successful self-polymerization of PDA on the GO surface, converting it into reduced GO (rGO). Then PDA-rGO/MoO 3 composite WEP coatings were systematically evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), microscopy and acceleration corrosion experiment. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and microscopy were used to assess the PDA-rGO/MoO 3 composite coatings. The EIS results revealed that the composite coating with 0.5 wt% PDA-rGO/MoO 3 substantially enhanced the anti-corrosion performance compared with the control samples. After prolonged immersion for 60 days in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the composite coating exhibited outstanding anti-corrosion performance, surpassing that of the GO/WEP coating by three orders of magnitude. This composite nanocoating provides valuable insights into the design of well-dispersed, 3D network-structured coatings with self-healing properties for corrosion protection, which opens up new possibilities for the practical application of composite nanohybrids in the field of anti-corrosive coatings.

Halloysite@Polyaniline Nanoparticles Loaded with the Praseodymium (III) Cation for Improving Active Corrosion Protection of Waterborne Epoxy Coating

Gongwen Tang,Chong Chen,Dongxia Wu,Zhishan Yan,Tingting Ren,Xiangyu Hou,Man Zhao,Shancan Fu,Lihua Fan

The corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating is poor during long-term service, which greatly limits its widespread application. In this paper, the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified by polyaniline (PANI) and then used as nanocontainers to encapsulate the green corrosion inhibitor praseodymium (III) cations (Pr3+), obtaining HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles. A scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were applied to characterize the formation of PANI and the absorption of Pr3+ cations. The corrosion-inhibiting ability of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles for iron sheets and the anticorrosion properties of the nanocomposite coatings were evaluated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The results indicated that the coating containing HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles exhibited excellent anticorrosion performance. After immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 50 days, its Zf=0.01 Hz value was still as high as 9.4 × 108 Ω cm2. The icorr value was 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the pure WEP coating. The excellent anticorrosion property of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ coating could be attributed to the synergy of three beneficial factors, including evenly distributed nanoparticles, PANI, and Pr3+ cations. This research will provide theoretical and technical support for the development of waterborne coatings with high corrosion resistance.
