Seawater electrolysis is an effective way for large-scale green hydrogen. Nevertheless, the anode suffers from the severe corrosion of Cl − and Br − during oxygen evolution, which gives rise to the issues of narrow-deep pits and shallow-wide pits, respectively. Herein, an anti-corrosion strategy is presented by self-adapting oxyanion armor to prevent the high valence active sites from Cl − and Br − corrosion. The core–shell FeNi 2 Se 4 @NiFe-Phy is reconstructed to active species NiFeOOH covered by an oxyanion layer composed of phosphoric and carbonate. The aimed anode exhibits remarkable efficiency, achieving current densities of 10 and 200 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of merely 220 and 277 mV, respectively. Notably, it shows unparalleled durability, enduring without any discernible degradation following rigorous testing for 400 h at 400–1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline simulated seawater, as well as natural seawater. A combination of density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations further confirms the bifunctional enhancement of oxyanion armor on NiFeOOH surface. At a current density of 200 mA cm −2 , the alkaline seawater electrolyzer has significant energy efficiency, consuming merely 4.61 and 4.27 kWh Nm −3 H 2 at room temperature and 80 °C, respectively. This work offers an efficacious surface corrosion resistance strategy for anode protection during seawater electrolysis.

Although Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive attention in energy-related fields, the direct application of MOF as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water electrolysis still remains a challenging topic. Herein, nickel foam (NF) self-supported hydrangea shaped NiRu bimetallic MOFs (NiRu-PTA/NF) prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method was directly used as bifunctional electrocatalyst, and exhibited highly-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performances for alkaline freshwater/seawater overall splitting owing to the large active surface area, abundant active sites and high intrinsic activity attributed to the unique morphology, enriched oxygen vacancies and modulated electronic structure of the catalyst. Specifically, NiRu-PTA/NF needed only 16 mV overpotential to drive a HER current density of 10 mA cm −2 and 298 mV overpotential to drive a OER current density of 20 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater, much lower than those of Ni-PTA/NF ( η 10,HER = 162 mV, η 20,OER = 372 mV) and Ru-PTA/NF ( η 10,HER = 36 mV, η 20,OER = 335 mV). Furthermore, a two-electrode configured water electrolysis cell assembled with NiRu-PTA/NF as both cathode and anode required a very low cell voltage of 1.54 V to achieve an electrolytic current density of 10 mA cm −2 and were operated continuously for 200 h at various current densities including 10, 100 and 200 mA cm −2 . Additionally, the NiRu-PTA/NF-assembled electrolysis cell also displayed excellent seawater electrolysis performance. This study proposes an available strategy to design highly-efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall freshwater/seawater electrolysis based on electronic structure and oxygen vacancy modulation between bimetallic centers of MOFs, and extends their promising application prospects for industrially clean hydrogen production.

Realizing effective alkaline water/seawater electrolysis through efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) electrocatalysts is demanding but attracts significant task. Herein, a novel NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y electrocatalyst comprising of Mo 2 N/FeO x N y interfacial rod-shaped structure on nitrogen-doped nickel nanosheets modified nickel foam (NF) (denoted NNNF) with remarkable HER and OER catalytic performance is reported. The nanosheet-rod structure coupled with multidimensional interfacial boundaries enriches the optimized NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y catalyst with rich active sites. As a result, the as-prepared NNNF@Mo 2 N/FeO x N y catalyst demands low overpotentials of 22/130 mV and 28/142 mV to drive current densities of 10/100 mA cm −2 for the HER, 222/348 mV and 239/361 mV for the OER in 1 M alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, respectively. The catalyst also reveals excellent HER and OER stability for 100 h at a constant high current density of 100 mA cm −2 in both electrolytes. The catalyst also acts as bifunctional catalyst in overall water electrolytic devices requiring low overall voltages of 1.42/1.47 V@20 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater/seawater electrolytes, as well as considerable voltages of 1.50/1.81 V@100/500 mA cm −2 in 6 M KOH seawater electrolyte at 60 °C for industrial conditions.

Seawater splitting provides a sustainable approach for large-scale hydrogen production without straining freshwater resources. However, the challenge lies in achieving high catalytic activity and stability due to electrocatalyst deactivation from structural degradation, poor corrosion resistance, and surface instability in both alkaline and seawater electrolysis. To address this, we propose a novel strategy combining Fe-doping with dual-phase lattice strain engineering in nickel-molybdenum transition metal nitrides (TMNs). The Fe-doped Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N electrocatalyst exhibits compressive lattice strains of −4.52% and −2.91% in the Ni 3 Mo 3 N and Mo 2 N phases, respectively, enhancing its structural integrity and electronic properties. Consequently, Fe-Ni 3 Mo 3 N/Mo 2 N achieves low overpotentials of 167 and 371 mV at current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, in 1 M alkaline seawater, with exceptional stability over 100 h at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that these compressive strains optimize the adsorption of OER intermediates and improve catalytic kinetics. This work demonstrates the promise of dual-phase lattice strain engineering in TMNs for efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalysts in seawater electrolysis, a strategy that has yet to be fully explored for OER.

Exploiting highly efficient oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts is crucial for hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis. Here, a hierarchical structure of boron-doped (Ni,Fe)OOH grown on Ni 3 N nanosheets supported on nickel foam [denoted as B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF] is fabricated. Benefiting from the formation of abundant active sites and the reduced free energy barrier of the rate-determining step caused by B doping, the obtained B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF exhibits extraordinary electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction, requiring overpotentials of only 283 mV and 309 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline pure water and seawater media, respectively, as well as superior stability. When driven by a commercial Si solar cell, the electrolyzer using B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF as the anode and a previously reported Ru/(Fe,Ni)(OH) 2 /NF as the cathode can achieve a high current of over 1000 mA in alkaline seawater media. This shows the great potential in applying a photovoltaic-driven electrolyzer toward large-scale hydrogen production in seawater electrolysis.

The integrity and uniformity of polyamide (PA) layer have a great influence on the separation performance of thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. In this work, three kinds of micelles including the neutral macromolecule Pluronic F127 (PF127), anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the PF127/SDS mixed micelles (PSMM), were proposed to be introduced in the aqueous phase to regulate the interfacial polymerization (IP) process with the purpose of constructing a more integrated and uniform PA separation layer of the RO membrane for seawater desalination . Compared to the single PF127 and SDS, the PSMM-1 (0.05 wt% PF127/0.05 wt% SDS) in the aqueous solution exhibited special advantages including unique three-dimensional (3D) spherical structure, lower solution viscosity and water-Isopar G interface tension (IFT), which sped up m -phenylenediamine (MPD) to homogeneously diffuse to the water-Isopar G interface and further regulated the interfacial polymerization reaction between MPD and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Ultimately, the regulated RO membrane via PSMM-1 had more uniform PA layer and thus exhibited better comprehensive separation performances including higher salt rejection (more than 99.5%) and ideal water flux (about 35 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). This study provides a facile method of PA microstructure adjustment via micelles to fabricate higher-performance TFC RO membrane for seawater desalination.

Seawater electrolysis under alkaline conditions represents a sustainable approach to the mass production of carbon-neutral hydrogen energy. However, the lack of efficient electrocatalysts restricts the development of this technology. Herein, core–shell-structured NiMoO4@NiFe LDH arrays with simultaneous interface and reconstruction engineering are reported as an efficient OER electrocatalyst for alkaline seawater electrolysis. The catalyst's open and hierarchical architecture, along with the excellent synergistic effects, allows for abundant active sites, high intrinsic activity and effective charge transfer. Specifically, it only required low overpotentials of 251 and 349 mV to attain current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm−2, respectively, along with impressive long-term durability over 80 h and nearly 100% faradaic efficiency. Various ex situ and in situ techniques substantiate the deep reconstruction behavior of the electrocatalyst, including fast dissolution of MoO42− anions and in situ generation of active NiFeOOH species. This work highlights that interface and reconstruction engineering are efficient strategies to fabricate advanced OER electrocatalysts.

The high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the undesirable chlorine evolution reaction (ClER) severely limit the hydrogen production efficiency of seawater electrolysis. The organic electrooxidation reactions, involving C–H bond oxidation with low bond dissociation energy in the rate-limiting step, can possess lower oxidation potential than the OER as well as prevent the ClER. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for replacing the sluggish OER by thermodynamically favorable biomass oxidation for scaling up the electrolysis of alkaline seawater. A xylose electrooxidation reaction (XOR) holds great promise for superseding the OER in seawater electrolysis, which not only simultaneously produces valuable formic acid and hydrogen, but also improves energy utilization. By utilizing NiCoP metal phosphide as the bifunctional electrode, the XOR shows an apparent overpotential reduction of 290 mV at 100 mA cm−2 as compared with the OER in the alkaline seawater electrolyte. Furthermore, the xylose-assisted seawater electrolysis exhibits a high formic acid selectivity of at least 94.6% and a high hydrogen production rate of 150 mL cm−2. This work provides a universal and an effective pathway for hydrogen production from seawater and biomass upgrading.

Defect engineering is considered one of the most powerful strategies for regulating the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts. A deep understanding of the defect-involved mechanism in electrocatalytic process is of great importance but remains a challenging task. In this study, an anionic Se-vacancy (V Se ) was introduced into iron diselenide (FeSe 2 ) nanoarrays, enabling the catalyst to exhibit improved electrocatalytic performance for sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR). The Se vacancy incorporated can modulate surface electronic structure and optimize the proximity of the d-p band center, strengthening the interaction between FeSe 2 -V Se and S atom. This endows the FeSe 2 /IF-V Se catalyst with the excellent electrocatalytic activity for SOR. As an alternative reaction to oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the low-potential SOR enables an ultralow electricity consumption in SOR-hydrid seawater electrolysis, avoiding detrimental chlorine electrochemistry. A proof-of-concept self-powered system based on FeSe 2 -V Se electrodes was constructed by integrating Zn-nitrite battery and SOR-hybrid seawater electrolyzer to produce high-value hydrogen, sulfur and ammonia. This work offers a fascinating strategy for the construction of an advanced energy system to produce hydrogen while utilizing seawater and wastewater.

In seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production, the competition between chlorine evolution and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode limits its hydrogen yield and system stability. To address this, we optimized the anode material by modulating the surface electronic structure of the active sites of Co 3 O 4 using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. By introducing the atomic layers of NiO x species, this approach results in the synthesis of a NiO x @Co 3 O 4 /Carbon cloth (CC) heterojunction, which serves as an effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst for high-performance seawater electrolysis. Adjusting the deposition cycles creates unique material interfaces that facilitate the transformation of reaction intermediate. The NiO x @Co 3 O 4 /CC heterostructure demonstrates superior catalytic performance over single-phase materials, which is attributed to its unique Ni-O-Co interface, showing low overpotentials of 204 mV in alkaline freshwater and 235 mV in seawater solutions at 10 mA cm −2 , 285 mV in alkaline freshwater and 329 mV in seawater solutions at 100 mA cm −2 . In addition, the incorporation of NiO x endowed the material with enhanced overall durability and corrosion resistance, reducing Cl-related species adsorption. After 300 h of chronoamperometric testing, the voltage remained stable, indicating its potential as an ideal electrocatalyst for seawater electrolysis under alkaline conditions.

Rational design of viable routes to develop affordable and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is essential for advancing electrochemical water splitting, yet significant challenges remain, particularly in seawater. Here, we propose a ligand defect engineering strategy to modify the electronic structure of NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) using a monodentate ligand (acetic acid, AcOH), inducing ligand vacancies in NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) for oxygen evolution in an alkaline seawater electrolyte, thereby improving the performance of the electrocatalysts. The resulting defective MOFs (denoted as NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)-x) exhibited exceptionally high catalytic activity for OER, requiring low overpotentials of 313 and 329 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH and simulated seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) solutions, respectively. Experimental analyses revealed that the introduction of AcOH can modulate the d-band center of active sites in NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)-x and play a critical role in alleviating chloride ion (Cl−) corrosion, thereby enhancing catalytic stability in seawater. When directly used as an OER catalyst in an alkaline electrolyte, wind and solar power were harnessed to operate the NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)-x || Pt/C configuration to drive the electrolytic water reaction. Thus, the ligand defect strategy can be employed to design and prepare high-performance OER electrocatalysts, particularly for generating H2 through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.
