For the first time in this study, chitin was solely extracted from lobster shells through a fast, easy and eco-friendly method using deep eutectic solvents (DESs), consisting of mixtures of choline chloride–thiourea (CCT), choline chloride–urea (CCU), choline chloride–glycerol (CCG) and choline chloride–malonic acid (CCMA). The physiochemical properties of the isolated chitins were compared with those of the chemically prepared one and commercial one from shrimp shells. Results showed that CCT, CCU and CCG DESs had no important effect on the elimination of proteins and minerals, while chitin obtained by CCMA DES showed a high purity. The yield (20.63 ± 3.30%) of chitin isolated by CCMA DES was higher than that (16.53 ± 2.35%) of the chemically prepared chitin. The chitin obtained by CCMA DES could be divided into two parts with different crystallinity (67.2% and 80.6%), which also had different thermal stability. Chitin from lobster shells showed porous structure, which is expected to be used for adsorption materials and tissue engineering.

Four dual-acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized and investigated in an oxidative desulfurization (ODS) system using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. l -Pyroglutamic acid/trifluoracetic acid ( l -Pyro/TFA) was further investigated as the extractant and catalyst owing to its excellent properties for removing aromatic sulfur compounds. Hydrogen bond formation by l -Pyro/TFA was confirmed using 1 H NMR and infrared spectra. The factors affecting the desulfurization efficiency, such as the DES/model oil volume ratio (V DES /V Oil ), reaction temperature, and H 2 O 2 /dibenzothiophene (DBT) molar ratio (n(H 2 O 2 )/n(DBT)), were explored. The sulfur removal rates of DBT, 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene, and benzothiophene were up to 99.7%, 99.6%, and 99.2%, respectively, under the optimum conditions, which were V DES /V oil = 1:20, n(H 2 O 2 )/n(DBT) = 3, and T = 60 °C. The ODS reaction followed first order kinetics through dynamic analysis. Furthermore, the desulfurization efficiency reached 98% after DES regeneration, achieved by simply washing with ultrapure water.

In this work, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized using ultrasound-assisted and stirring heating methods. DES combined with ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) was proposed for the efficient extraction of glycosides from Syringa pubescens Turcz. A series of DES systems were used to evaluate the extraction efficiency of glycosides in S. pubescens . The DES composed of choline chloride/glycerol extracted higher than those of conventional solvents and other DESs. The extraction procedure of DES-UAE was optimized using response surface methodology. The extraction solvent was choline chloride-glycerol formed a DES with the mole ratio of 1:2 with 20 % of water content. The optimum conditions for echinacoside (ECH) and oleuropein (OLE) were ultrasound power of 200 W, extraction temperature of 68 °C, solvent to solid ratio of 20:1 mL/g and the extraction time of 45 min. Furthermore, the DES with 30 % water content can be used as dilution solvent before HPLC analysis of DES extract. In addition, the enrichment of ECH and OLE from DES extract was achieved using HPD-450 macroporous resin, with the recoveries of 80.04 % and 86.21 %, respectively.

Phytoremediation is an in situ environmentally friendly and economically feasible remediation technology to treat heavy metal contaminated soil. However, the obtained heavy metal enriched biomass is treated as hazardous waste and disposed of traditionally via incineration, posing risks of secondary pollution. In this work, we developed a novel DES-based pretreatment and metal extraction process to enable the valorization of phytoremediation biomass such as genetically modified poplar as the potential feedstock for biomass refining. The results showed that the DES (choline chloride/lactic acid) could remove around 98.3% Cd accumulated in poplar as well as a notable amount of lignin, resulting in a cellulose-rich pulp with trace heavy metals and Cu-containing lignin nanoparticles with a high phenolic hydroxyl content. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of this DES were analyzed. The excellent electrochemical stability and high conductivity of this DES enable its cleaning up via electrochemical deposition and recycling. Furthermore, this DES-based treatment technology has been demonstrated successfully for the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii, providing evidence for its wide applicability and potential for scaling-up.

In this work, three deep eutectic solvents (DESs) triethylamine/formic acid ([Et 3 N/FA]), triethylamine/acetic acid ([Et 3 N/PA]), triethylamine/propionic acid ([Et 3 N/AA]) were synthesized and were used for extractive denitrogenation of model oil. Among them [Et 3 N/PA] exhibited reasonably high extraction efficiency for both indole and quinolone. Structure optimization, electrostatic potential analysis and reduced density gradient analysis were performed to explore the synthesis mechanism of DESs and extractive denitrogenation mechanism by DESs taking [Et 3 N/PA] as a representative. The structure of [Et 3 N/PA] were characterized by FTIR and NMR. Results indicate that both strong hydrogen bond and van der Waals are the major force for DESs synthesis. Both hydrogen bonds and van der Waals are responsible for indole removal, while only van der Waals is responsible for quinolone removal. The effect of factors on extraction efficiency was also investigated and results indicate that [Et 3 N]/[PA] has the advantages of short equilibrium time, ability to deal with fuel oils with a wide range of nitrogen contents, excellent performance near room temperature. The presence of olefins and aromatics in fuel oil has negligible negative influence on the extraction efficiency of indole and quinolone. Furthermore, [Et 3 N/PA] exhibits excellent regeneration performance. Consequently, [Et 3 N/PA] is a promising extractant for fuel oil denitrogenation.

Adopting an integrated strategy to realize efficient fractionation of lignocellulose into well-defined components for its valorization is challenging. Combinatorial pretreatments in this study decomposed hemicellulose of green bamboo during hydrothermal pretreatment (HP), and the hydrothermally pretreated bamboo was subsequently subjected to delignification using deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride and lactic acid, finally facilitating enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose residue. Upon hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C for 35 min, hemicellulose removal of 88.6% was achieved with xylo-oligosaccharide yield and purity of 50.9% and 81.6%, respectively. After DES treatment at 140 °C for 2 h, lignin removal was determined to be 79.1%. Notably, the regenerated lignin with high purity of 96.8% displayed superior antioxidant activity, and the decrease in the ratio of syringyl units to guaiacyl units led to a slight decrease in radical scavenging activity of lignin after five recycling runs of DES. Moreover, the two-step treated residue had much higher enzymatic digestibility than that of single HP residue and untreated green bamboo. Results show that synergistic pretreatment is a promising strategy to tackle the recalcitrance of lignocellulose towards high value-added utilization. Keywords:bamboo;hydrothermal;deep eutectic solvent;enzymatic hydrolysis;antioxidant

In the current work, a temperature-responsive system consisting of a fatty acid-based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent and a choline chloride (ChCl)-based hydrophilic deep eutectic solvent was innovatively developed. It was used to extract and separate polar compounds (chlorogenic acid, rutin, hyperin, isoquercetin, hydroxy-α-sanshool) from Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. peels (ZBMP). Different molar ratios of the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of decanoic acid (DA)-octanoic acid (OA) and hydrophilic DES composed of ChCl-levulinic acid (Lev) were chosen as the switching medium. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the TRBDES consisting of hydrophilic DES (ChCl: Lev/1:2): hydrophobic DES (OA: DA/2:1): H 2 O (v/v/v,5/5/1) demonstrated a greater total extraction rate and distributive efficiency than the conventional solvents. High DPPH radical scavenging capacity of target compounds (IC 50 = 0.29 mg/mL) from the bottom phase recovered by D101 macroporous resin. Hydrogels prepared by DES containing extracts in the top phase showed significant inhibition of E. coli (15.5 ± 0.7 mm). and S. aureus (21.0 ±1.4 mm). The solvent morphologies and the intrinsic switching mechanism were observed and illustrated. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that hydrogen bond production is crucial for extraction. This work provides a resource for exploring and utilizing TRBDES for environmentally friendly extraction of various bioactive active ingredients from plant sources.

As a new generation of water-immiscible solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) have shown great potential as green and sustainable reaction media for biocatalytic applications. Tyrosol is a major phenolic compound present in olive oil and wine with potential pharmacological benefits due to its strong antioxidant properties, and its application can be highly extended by increasing its lipophilicity through esterification. In this study, two lipases, one from Aspergillus oryzae (AOL) and another from Pseudomonas fluorescens (PFL), were immobilized on inorganic salt crystals (i.e. @Cu3(PO4)2) and on metal-organic frameworks (i.e. @HKUST-1). The structural features of these four new biocatalysts were characterized and their activity and stability assayed. They were successfully employed to catalyze the esterification of tyrosol to produce tyrosol esters in HDESs with excellent yields, which are comparable to, or even better than, the results obtained by using the most commonly used commercial lipase (i.e. Novozym 435 from Novozymes). The carboxylic acid-based HDESs provide not only a reaction medium but also an acylating agent for the enzymatic (trans)esterification reactions.

Tea saponin has garnered tremendous interest for its potential use in surfactant and drug synthesis. This research was designed to develop a technique based on pH-responsive switchable deep eutectic solvents (SDESs) for extracting tea saponins from Camellia oleifera seed meal. SDES synthesized from hexanoic acid and triethanolamine (1:1 molar ratio) offered the optimum extractive performance and the optimal conditions were obtained through single-factor experiments: 30 wt% water content in SDES, solid-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/mL, 60°C extraction temperature, 30 min extraction time, and acid volume of 1500 µL. The extraction yield was 162.14 mg/g after optimization, which increased by 15.65% and 9.47% compared to water and ethanol extraction methods, respectively. After pH adjustment, 98.95% of the tea saponins were recovered in the bottom phase. After precipitation and freeze-drying procedures, the purity of the tea saponin solid was 62.9%.

Graphical The work develops an efficient solvent extraction methodology using Cyanex 272 for the recovery of cobalt from Co(II)-containing waste Ethaline electrolytes, while enabling solvent regeneration. This proposed method provides an economically viable, highly efficient, and environmentally sustainable approach for recovering metal ions from waste deep eutectic solvent (DES) electrolytes. Efficient recovery of metals from secondary resources is essential to address resource shortages and environmental crises. The development of a cheap, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient recovery pathway is essential for resource retrieval. In this study, we propose a high-efficiency extraction approach utilizing bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphonic acid (Cyanex272) to recover cobalt from waste choline chloride/ethylene glycol (Ethaline) electrolyte containing Co(II) ions. By adjusting the water content of the system to modify the ligand of Co(II) ions, combined with pH adjustment, we achieved an extraction efficiency exceeding 99.9 % for Co(II) ions. Subsequently, oxalic acid (OA) was added as a stripping agent to achieve a recovery efficiency of over 99.4 % for cobalt. The extractant can be recycled more than 15 times after stripping. Impressively, more than 98.3 % of the water-diluted Ethaline extraction raffinate was recovered through reduced pressure distillation while maintaining the structure of recovered Ethaline unchanged. This work provides an economical, efficient, and sustainable pathway for treating waste Ethaline electrolyte-containing metal ions.

Recycling of valuable metals from spent catalysts in a green way is gaining extensive interest for economic and environment reasons. In this study, we developed novel hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents to extract Mo from spent catalysts. The hydrophobic DESs have been designed and synthesized by mixing one molar of the quaternary ammonium salt and two molars of various saturated fatty acids with different carbon chain lengths. The extraction ability and extraction mechanism of these DESs were studied, some factors influencing the extraction efficiency, including the structure of hydrogen bond acceptors and hydrogen bond donors, initial aqueous pH, reaction time and temperature, phase ratios were investigated. It is found that the synthesized hydrophobic DESs exhibit excellent extraction performance toward Mo, where the Mo distribution ratio is more than 2200 in the presence of other metals, corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 99% at optimal reaction conditions. This work reveals a distinct class of materials, guiding an effective and green way for spent catalyst treatment.Implications: Novel hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents have been developed to extract Mo from spent catalysts, the synthesized hydrophobic DESs possess several advantages, such as green, low price, low toxicity, and biodegradability. Abstract In this study a class of DESs based on triethylamine (TEA) and aromatic acids
was synthesized and used in the extractive denitrogenation of model oil fraction
firstly. The structures of DESs were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance
and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The factors that influence
extraction efficiency and distribution coefficient were investigated. The
extraction performance of TEA/ o -hydroxybenzoic acid (OHBA) is better than that of TEA/benzoic acid
and TEA/ o -methylbenzoic acid. The extraction
efficiencies of quinoline and indole reach up to 99.1 and 98.3% only through two
extraction stages, respectively. The extraction efficiency is not sensitive to
reaction temperature and initial nitrogen content. The DESs based on TEA and
aromatic acids exhibit excellent regeneration performance. In summary, the DESs
based on TEA and aromatic acids are excellent extracting agents for basic and
non-basic nitrogen compounds and will become promising extracting agents for the
oil fraction denitrogenation.
