With the widespread application of communication equipment with electromagnetic signal transmission to cause electromagnetic radiation pollution, there is an urgent need for high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials. Here, an ultrathin, flexible, alternating multilayered, and conductive gradient-structured cellulose nanofiber–MXene/silver nanowire (CNF-MXene/AgNW) nanocomposite paper with high mechanical strength, strong electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and outstanding thermal management was constructed via the alternating vacuum filtration (AVF) process. The extensive hydrogen bonding interactions between MXene, CNF, and AgNW enhance the interfacial adhesion and conductive synergy between layers, resulting in excellent tensile strength of 194.3 MPa and fracture strain of 7.62% of nanocomposite paper. The alternating conductive gradient structure of the nanocomposite paper greatly increases the interlayer multiple reflections and absorption of electromagnetic waves, resulting in a high conductivity of 3237.35 S cm −1 and excellent electromagnetic shielding efficiency of 65.4 dB for the nanocomposite paper. Under an external low voltage of 3 V, the surface temperature of the nanocomposite paper reaches 107.2 ℃ within 10 s and can be stable for a long time. These results indicate that CNF-MXene/AgNW nanocomposite paper with a conductive gradient structure has potential applications in the fields of aerospace, communication engineering, and wearable devices.

The rapid development of electronic devices has led to widespread demand and research on electronic packaging materials with electromagnetic shielding and thermal conductivity (TC) properties due to the inevitable issues of the electromagnetic radiation and thermal accumulation. However, there exists a huge challenge to simultaneously achieve high electromagnetic shielding and TC as well as the electrical insulation requirement as electromagnetic shielding predominantly relies on electrical conductivity of materials. Multilayer structure can endow composite materials with a variety of properties. Therefore, in this work, we fabricated sandwiched cellulose nanofiber/boron nitride nanosheet/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene films by using a simple and effective alternating vacuum filtration method, and as a result, the special sandwich structure endows the film with excellent electromagnetic shielding, insulation and TC performance. The composite film has an extremely high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness up to 60.7 dB at 8.2 GHz as well as still maintains good electrical insulation properties due to the presence of the CNF/BNNS layer on the surface. Moreover, when the content of BNNS in the CNF/BNNS layer reaches 70 wt%, the sandwiched film has excellent in-plane TC of 19.97 W m −1 K −1 . The sandwiched film with excellent electromagnetic shielding and high TC yet insulation performance has great application value in highly integrated electronic devices.

Recently, soaring developments in microelectronics raise an urgent demand for thermal management materials to tackle their “overheating” concerns. Polymer nanocomposites are promising candidates but often suffer from their inability of mass production, high-cost, poor mechanical robustness, and even flammability. Hence, it is desirable to scalably fabricate low-cost, robust polymeric nanocomposites that are highly thermally conductive and fire-retardant to ensure safe and efficient thermal management. Herein, the scalable production of nacre-like anisotropic nanocomposite films using the layer-by-layer assembly of phenylphosphonic acid@graphene nanoplatelets (PPA@GNPs)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) layer and GNPs layers, is demonstrated. The PPA serves as interfacial modifiers and fire retardants for flammable PVA (film-forming agent) and GNPs (inexpensive conductive nanofillers) via hydrogen-bonding and π–π stacking. The resultant nanocomposite exhibits a high flexibility, high tensile strength of 259 MPa, and an ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity of 82.4 W m -1 K -1 , making it effectively cool smartphone and high-power light emitting diode modules, outperforming commercial tinfoil counterparts. Moreover, the as-designed nanocomposites are intrinsically fire-retardant and can shield electromagnetic interference. This work offers a general strategy for mass production of thermally conductive nanocomposites holding great promise as thermal management materials in electronic, military, and aerospace fields.

Rubber and plastic are widely acted as substrates in flexible electromagnetic shielding (EMS) materials. However, these materials have several drawbacks in practical applications, such as potential environmental concerns and difficulties in degrading. In this work, a biodegradability paper-based material composed of electromagnetic wave loss layer (graphene/ silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coating) and reflective layer (aluminum film layer) was successfully fabricated. The electromagnetic wave loss layer constructed three-dimensional (3D) electric conductive network to facilitate the timely transfer of electrons and heat energy obtained from electromagnetic waves. Meanwhile, the reflective layer received electrons and heat from the electric conductive network and make a small quantity of transmission wave back to the wave loss layer. The resulting material exhibited an ultrahigh electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 92.29 dB within 8–13 GHz, electrical conductivity of 4431 S/m, mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 32 MPa and elongation at break of 6.65%. Compared to the traditional EMS materials, the composite material integrated with excellent EMI SE, heat transfer performance, and weatherability, which has potential applications in microelectronics, high integrated circuits, and flexible electronic fields.

Graphene/polymer nanocomposites have attracted much attention due to their variability and flexibility. In this paper, graphene/polyvinylidene fluoride (graphene/PVDF) and graphene/Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)–PVDF nanocomposites were successfully prepared by the combined action of viscoelastic matching of polymer and impaction shear field of high-energy ball milling, and the effects of four technological parameters on the exfoliation effect of expanded graphite were investigated. The interlayer exfoliation and graphenization of graphite were realized during the ball milling process. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, AFM, conductivity test, and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were used to characterize the structure and performance of the composite. The results show that the graphene thickness in nanocomposites is about 4–7 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the conductivity of the composite reaches 0.41 S/m, and the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) reaches 15.8 dB. Ball milling together with EG–TPU–PVDF as a grinding agent can effectively realize graphenization of graphite. When the mass fraction of TPU with 44% of hard segment ratio is 10%, graphene thickness in graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is about 3–5 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the electrical conductivity is 1.01 S/m, and the EMSE is 21.4 dB, which shows that the graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is a typical absorbing type of electromagnetic shielding material.

Effective heat dissipation capacity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance are urgently required for modern electronic equipment. Herein, pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were first nondestructively functionalized by eco-friendly dopamine chemistry, which maintained the integrity of inherent graphitic lattice structure of CNTs. In the meanwhile, introduction of polydopamine (PDA) improved interfacial interaction between PDA-coated CNTs (CNT@PDA) and the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) matrix. Favorable pathways for rapid thermal conduction and electron transmission were paved by oriented arrangement of CNT@PDA. As a result, dual-functional CNT@PDA/EVA composite films were fabricated, which exhibited remarkable in-plane thermal conductivity (TC) and prominent EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). The TC and EMI SE of the 70 wt% CNT@PDA/EVA composite film climbed up to 17.9 W/mK and 32.4 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the CNT@PDA/EVA composite films revealed outstanding flexibility and mechanical fatigue durability. After repeated bending test , the retention ratio of the in-plane TC and EMI SE was 98% and 97%, respectively. The in-plane TC and EMI SE presented excellent retention ratio of 94% and 95% after repeated tensile test , respectively. Our work provides a valuable reference to design and fabricate dual-functional or multifunctional composites applied in modern electrical systems and electronic devices.

Based on the broad scope of applications in electronics, the development requirements of excellent electronic packaging materials with efficient thermal management performance and high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) are critical, while which are also hardly compatible for a single material such as an elementary substance or a simple chemical compound. Therefore, a series of novel composites filled with phase change material (PCM) polyethylene glycol (PEG) were developed with MXene as the skeleton, and flame retardant Mg(OH) 2 was added to achieve flame retardancy for composites under high temperature environment. As a result, the prepared MXene@PEG/Mg(OH) 2 in this work could achieve an excellent EMI SE of 38.8 dB in X-band, and the thermal conductivity rose from 0.26 to 0.95 W/m·K, while the composite film also presented certain mechanical properties , with the latent heat of 153.72 J/g. Furthermore, the shape stability of the composite material was favourable due to the capillary function of MXene, which effectively forbade the leakage behavior of PCMs during solid-liquid phase transition. The design of MXene@PEG/Mg(OH) 2 composite with stable structure provided a new idea for manufacturing EMI SE materials which often exposed to electromagnetic radiation, which indicated potential great significance for a new generation of packaging materials application in electronic equipment field.

Hybrid film in nanoscale with high-flexibility, excellent-mechanical properties and outstanding EMI shielding capacity are desirable for telecommunication systems and precision equipment in aerospace, artificial intelligence and military. Herein, copper nanowire/Ti 3 C 2 T x /aramid nanofibers (CuNWs/MXene/ANFs) hybrid film with uniform-blended, twin-layered and triple-layered structure were developed via in steps vacuum-assisted filtration approach. Benefiting from ANFs building blocks and pleasant interface bonding, the uniform-blended structure film with CuNWs/MXene content of 60 wt% exhibited high-flexibility with folding number of ∼ 2000 times and ideal stability in oxidation resistance and sonication treatment. In addition, due to the layered structure and primordial dense substrate, the triple-layered film with CuNWs/MXene content of 60 wt% demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strength of 165.72 MPa and toughness of 15.59 MJ/m 3 , conductivity of 4475 S·cm −1 and specific EMI effectiveness of 9120.6 dB·cm 2 ·g −1 at thickness of 43 μm (over the whole X band). Particularly, the comprehensive performance of three types of film was synthetically evaluated in seven parameters including SSE/t, toughness, strength, conductivity, thickness, flexibility, and stability, which opened up new evaluation for advance EMI shielding film. The experimental results indicated that the uniform-blended film has excellent potential for efficient, robust, flexible, and stable EMI shielding applications in military, smart electronics and aerospace.

Polymeric films with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) and polyfunctionality are highly desirable for wearable electronic devices. Herein, a sandwich-structured EMI shielding film with Joule heating performance composed of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) layer and a conductive filler layer (silver nanowire (AgNW) and MXene) was constructed by electrostatic spinning, vacuum-assisted filtration (VAF), and hot compression. An independent AgNW layer endowed the film with predominant EMI shielding performance at a low conductive filler content. A high EMI SE of 45.4 dB was obtained in the X band at a AgNW fraction of 1.28 wt %. The introduction of MXene improved the connection of the AgNW networks, thereby further enhancing the electrical conductivity and imparting the film with long-term stability. The as-obtained PVDF-AgNW/MXene film exhibited an outstanding EMI SE of 47.8 dB and only a slight decrease in EMI SE was detected after 2000 bending cycles. Besides, the PVDF-AgNW/MXene film exhibits excellent Joule heating performance. The surface temperature of the film could exceed 77 °C under an applied voltage of 2.5 V. Therefore, our sandwich-structured film with enhanced EMI shielding and Joule heating performance can be used for flexible electronic device applications in extreme conditions.

Herein, a sustainable graphene/nanocellulose electromagnetic shielding composite film was fabricated via nanocellulose inducing graphite in-situ mechanical exfoliation. Cations were added to enhance properties of the films via cation crosslinking. The few-layer graphene produced by this strategy was ∼3.4 nm in average thickness and good dispersion in the films. The electrical conductivity , electromagnetic shielding effectiveness and mechanical property of the film were enhanced by cation crosslinking, while cation-π interactions between metal and graphene-enhanced the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. For example, the films cross-linked Cu 2+ cations exhibit a tensile strength of 64.3 MPa, elongation at broken of 17.1%, and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 30.7 dB and a conductivity of 3172 S/m at a thickness of 40 μm. In addition, the different Joule heating performance and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were found in the films by cross-linking with different cations. We provide a new route to prepare low-cost, sustainable, and tunable electromagnetic shielding films with good Joule heating and mechanical property.

Resolving indoor electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radiation pollution caused by electromagnetic waves have become paramount. Plywood is broadly used in interior decoration and give them EMI shielding function will be significant for addressing these issues. Herein, inspired by the mussel underwater bonding strategy and oyster, polydopamine (PDA) graft transition layer was introduced between inorganic BaTiO 3 (BT) core layer and organic polyaniline (PANI) shell layer to construct controllable core@double-shell BT@PDA@PANI nanoparticles. The epoxide polymer and aldehyde-decorated carbon dots (CDs) were used as crosslinkers to form the covalent bonds and dynamic covalent bonds within the adhesive network. The core@double-shell nanoparticles were used as a reinforcing element and crosslinker to construct an organic–inorganic hybrid protein adhesive. This as-prepared protein adhesive exhibits remarkable improvements in wet shear strength (1.16 MPa), dry shear strength (1.97 MPa), and water resistance. Encouragingly, the plywood with in-situ formulated adhesives is an absorption dominated EMI shielding material and reveals an excellent EMI SE T of 38.04 dB EMI in the X-band, significantly outperforming most of the reported synthetic materials. This outstanding performance is attributable to its superior conductivity and unique hierarchical structure of plywood. Therefore, this study offers a facile, environmentally-friendly, and economically feasible strategy for preparing high-performance adhesives to address indoor EMI problems.

The rapid development of electronic technology requires the use of high performance electromagnetic interference shielding materials to establish a safe environment, and environmentally friendly materials cannot be ignored. This paper explores the use of sodium alginate (SA), a naturally readily biodegradable material, to induce spontaneous assembly polymerisation by the addition of monovalent tide salts (NaCl); this is then chemically cross-linked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form a highly ductile support structure between them, resulting in an anticorrosive, highly ductile hydrogel that can be used as a conductive and electromagnetic shielding material. The results indicate that the strength of the PVA-PEG-SA-180 hydrogel is 16.1 MPa, the elongation at break is 204.93%, and the conductivity of 15 ms mm−1 is 174.4%, 188.14%, and 25041.7% higher than that of the PVA-PEG-SA-0 hydrogel. At a thickness of only 2 mm, the average electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) was 32.64 dB. It is worth mentioning that the corrosion protection effect appeared after only 7 days.
