Understanding the intricate mechanisms from material fabrication to catalytic reaction is crucial in energy chemistry. Herein, we elucidate the underlying mechanisms from catalyst to catalysis on Ir-segregated SrIrO 3 (Ir/SrIrO 3 ) as an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst in acidic conditions. During the phosphorization-assisted reduction process, in-situ spectroscopic analysis revealed that hydrogen radicals (H·) from the dissociation of P-H bonds attack the lattice oxygen at edge Ir-O sites, resulting in the segregation of Ir atoms and the formation of robust Ir-O interfacial structures between exsolved Ir clusters and the oxygen sites in SrIrO 3 . These interfacial structures are essential for the high performance of HER, while SrIrO 3 provides structural stability. The protons in the electrolyte are activated at the Ir nanocluster sites, incorporating oxygen in SrIrO 3 through the Ir-O interface, forming a reconstructed Ir-OH structure. This structure maintains both thermodynamic and electrochemical stability by adjusting hydrogen diffusion, embedding, and surface hydrogen coverage to sustain dynamic equilibrium during the catalytic process. Theoretical analysis confirms the necessity of the stable Ir-O interface via Ir- 5d and O- 2p orbital hybridization and hydrogen intercalation, optimizing charge redistribution, hydrogen bond length, and hydrogen adsorption free energy for enhanced HER kinetics. This study provides new insights into catalyst development by elucidating the relationship between catalyst structure and catalytic performance.

In present study, bilayer emulsions with different interfacial structures stabilized by casein/butyrylated dextrin nanoparticles (CDNP), chitosan (CS) and chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP) were prepared to overcome the limitations of conventional emulsions. The effects of chitosan morphology and incorporation sequences on the bilayer emulsions were examined. Bilayer emulsions prepared with CDNP as the inner layer and CS/CSNP as the outer layer were observed to have smaller droplet sizes (1.39 ± 86.74 um and 1.45 ± 7.87 um). Bilayer emulsions prepared with CDNP as the inner layer and CS as the outer layer exhibited the lowest creaming index (2.38 %) after 14 days of storage, indicating excellent stability. Furthermore, bilayer emulsion prepared with CDNP as the inner layer and CS as the outer layer also exhibited a uniform water distribution, excellent protein oxidative stability, and uniformly distributed droplets by the measurement of Low-field NMR, intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence and laser confocal laser scanning microscopy. These results indicated that the study provided a theoretical basis for the development and design of bilayer emulsions with different interfacial structures. This study also provides a new material for the preparation of delivery systems that protect biologically active compounds. Bilayer emulsions are promising for applications in traditional and manufactured food products.

Diamond/Cu composites are ideal materials for thermal management in high-power electronic devices. The use of W coating can enhance the interfacial bonding of the composites and improve the room temperature thermal performance. However, its high-temperature thermal performance cannot be guaranteed. This study constructs diamond/W-Cu/Cu dual-layer interface structures based on coated W to further optimize the high-temperature thermal performance of the composites. This work synthesized diamond/Cu composites with various interface structures by varying the sintering temperature and time. The results indicate that the W-WC composite interface has a higher thermal conductivity than the W-W 2 C-WC interface structure, and a peak thermal conductivity of 660 W/(m·K) is achieved at an interface structure of 52 nm W-108 nm WC, corresponding to a thermal expansion coefficient of 5.2 ppm/K. A dual-layer interface structure was next constructed. While the results show that the dual-layer interface composites have better high-temperature thermal properties and bonding with the interface. The relative density of the composite was increased by nearly 2.8 % and its thermal conductivity was increased to 698 W/(m·K), while the high-temperature thermal conductivity degradation (at 200 °C) was reduced from 33.5 % to 29.5 %. Additionally, it achieves a 25 % reduction in high-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and improves thermal stability by 50 %. Its low thermal resistance and high thermal stability provide an innovative solution for the thermal management of high heat flow density electronics.

Improving the thermal conductivity of diamond-metal composites has always been a significant challenge in the field of thermal management. In this paper, diamond/Al composites were systematically studied, and the influence of holding time (10-120 min) on interface structure and thermal conductivity was discussed. The research results shows that the long-term thermal diffusion sintering can effectively the dense interfacial bonding of diamond/Al composites and enhance the thermal conductivity. The diamond/Al composites with 50 vol% 900 μm diamond attained the highest value of 888.73 W/mK under the sintering conditions of 650 ℃, 50 MPa, and 120 min, nearly 92% of the theoretical value predicted by the Maxwell model. This study establishes that high thermal conductivity can be achieved through long-term thermal diffusion alone, without the complex diamond surface coating and substrate alloying.

Epoxy composites with flame-retardant fillers are key electrical insulation materials for dry-type high-voltage (HV) transformers, but the ionic structure nature of the flame-retardant fillers can lead to the deterioration of the insulation performance, limiting the reliability of HV power systems. This study systematically examines how flame-retardant filler introduction and interface structure evolution impact charge transport within composites, aiming to refine the design principles of flame-retardant electrical insulation materials. Composites with uniformly dispersed fillers and ideal interfacial bonding with the matrix exhibit improved resistivity (1.41 × 10 16 Ω cm), attributed to the dense cross-linked network that limits impurity ion movement. More importantly, the behavior of space charge accumulation and dissipation within the composites indicates that the interfacial structure affects the internal energy level distribution, thereby influencing charge carrier transport characteristics. By optimizing the interfacial structure, the suppression of electrode charge injection and reduction of electric field distortion (from 15.1 % to 8.5 %) enhance the electrical insulation reliability of epoxy composites. These findings deepen the understanding of structure-property relationships in epoxy composites, offering critical insights for designing advanced flame-retardant HV electrical insulation materials.

The “interface” between polymer and oxide within the polymer-oxide composite electrolytes is widely acknowledged as a crucial factor influencing ionic conduction. However, a fundamental understanding of the precise composition and/or micro-structure, and the ionic conduction mechanism at the complex interface has remained elusive, primarily due to a dearth of compelling experimental evidence. In this study, the intricate correlation between morphology and composition in composite electrolytes is discerned by leveraging advanced 1D and 2D exchange nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1D and 2D EXSY NMR) techniques. Notably, this research represents the inaugural elucidation of the microstructure of the interface. The findings underscore the pivotal role of the preparation conditions for polymer-oxide composite electrolytes, particularly the solvent selection, in determining the formation of the interface structure. Direct insights into the lithium-deficient surface of Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) are provided and elucidate the timescales of Li-ion exchange processes among various components. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation into the roles of individual components within the composite electrolyte on the Li-ion conduction mechanism is conducted through the 6 Li→ 7 Li isotope tracer technique as a function of current density.

CNTs/Cu-Ti composites were fabricated successfully by spray pyrolysis , low energy ball milling and subsequent hot pressing (HP). Microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were characterized by SEM, EDS, HRTEM , XRD, hardness and tensile tests. The results reveal that in situ generated nano-TiC particles, as a transition phase from CNTs to Cu-Ti matrix, which played a “rivet” role in enhancing the interfacial bonding between the CNTs and Cu-Ti matrix is formed in the composites. Consequently, mechanical properties of the CNTs/Cu-Ti composites are enhanced compared with alloy matrix, and an optimal balance between elevated ultimate tensile strength and impressively larger plastic deformation is achieved by adding 0.4 wt% CNTs in the composites. (ultimate tensile strength (UTS) 352 MPa, elongation 28.2%, the UTS is 39% higher than that of the Cu-Ti alloy, and the ductility increased significantly by 62%.) Finally, strengthening and toughening mechanisms are discussed. This study provides new insights into the interface structure and strength-ductility in metal-matrix composites.

Obtaining highly efficient and structurally stable electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) at anodes by a simple and feasible strategy remains challenging for achieving hydrogen production with low-energy consumption. Herein, we successfully constructed a tri-phase interfacial structure of CoFe alloy/CoFe oxide/cobalt-doped iron oxide (denoted as CoFe/CoFeOx/Co–Fe3O4) as a highly efficient and low-cost OER electrocatalyst by a one-step chemical bath deposition approach. The tri-phase interfacial structure was achieved by controlling the dosage of reductants/oxidants and tuning the proportion of Co/Fe salts. The as-prepared CoFe/CoFeOx/Co–Fe3O4 not only delivered a remarkable OER activity, i.e., a low overpotential of 291 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 47.8 mV dec−1, but also exhibited a decent stability for a long-term electrolysis. To unveil the catalytic mechanism, two reasonable aspects of adsorption regulation of oxygenating intermediates and interfacial charge transfer at electrodes/electrolytes were predictively proposed.

Designing efficient active sites to facilitate the oxidation of hydroxyl group to carboxylic acid under the influence of nitrogen-containing functional groups is worth exploring, but it is rarely investigated. Herein, we construct defective Au-ZrO 2 interfacial structures by tuning the calcination temperature of ZrO 2 support to boost the oxidation of amino alcohols to amino acids. Interestingly, the modification of calcination temperature induces the escape of saturated coordination oxygen atoms in ZrO 2 support, leaving behind abundant surface oxygen vacancy (O v ). The as-formed Au δ− -O v interfacial site displays the unique synergistic adsorption effect and electron transfer ability. Specifically, the O v site voluntarily adsorbs the –NH 2 group of amino alcohol, thus ensuring that the electron-rich Au δ− nearby O v site adsorbs the hydroxyl groups and activates the C-H bond activation of NH 2 CH 2 CH 2 O* intermediates. Consequently, Au/ZrO 2 -600 catalyst with more defective Au δ− -O v interfacial sites exhibits 98.8 % product yield for the oxidation of diethanolamine to iminodiacetic acid at only 30 °C. The catalyst system is further extended to the oxidation of other amino alcohols, involving monoethanolamine and triethanolamine, to their corresponding amino acids with excellent catalytic performance.

Thin-film composite (TFC) membrane has been extensively utilized and investigated for its excellent properties. Herein, we have constructed an active layer (AL) containing cave-like structures utilizing large meniscus interface. Furthermore, the impact of interface structure on the growth process, morphology, and effective surface area of AL has been fully explored with the assistance of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS). The SDBS-induced nanobubbles continuously facilitated the migration of the top layer of AL toward the upper space. During this process, the surface area of sunken AL in the cave-like structures initially exhibited an increase and then a decrease. Additionally, the larger interface significantly enhanced the surface area and delayed the rise in the top layer of AL in the cave-like structures. Therefore, the TFC membrane, utilizing a substrate with a pore size of 1.00 μm and assisted by 0.30 mM SDBS, exhibited remarkable flux enhancement (>63%) and reduced reverse sodium salt flux (>35%) in a forward osmosis system. Moreover, the roughness factor was introduced to directly quantify the effective surface area, which had a good correlation with the water flux. Our findings demonstrated the significant potential of utilizing substrates with a large pore size to overcome the inherent limitations of the TFC membrane.

In bipolar membrane fuel cells (BPMFCs), water is an essential reactant to drive cathode half-cell reaction, making the optimization of water distribution in the cathode critical for enhancing overall performance. One promising strategy is to refine the junction interface architecture. Our research presents an innovative modification to the proton exchange membrane (PEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) interface microstructure, which reduces the distance for water transport to the cathode catalyst layer and maximizes the interfacial contact area. The increased interfacial contact area, with a normalized interfacial area (NIA) ranging from 1.00 to 1.65, correlates with a decrease in charge transfer impedance and a corresponding rise in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and peak power density. Significantly, the water distribution ratio at the cathode rose from 33.3 % in the unmodified BPMFC to 69.6 % with an NIA of 1.65. Consequently, the BPMFC with an NIA of 1.65 for the PEM|AEM interface achieved a peak power density of 1.037 W cm −2 , about 80 % higher than that of the unmodified interface. These results establish a link between the PEM|AEM interface structure, water distribution, and the fuel cell output performance, highlighting the importance of interface architecture in boosting BPMFCs’ efficiency.

In this paper, we fabricated a novel copper matrix composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using electroless deposition (ED) and spark plasma sintering technique. Microstructure, mechanical, electric conductivity, and thermal properties of the CNTs/Cu composites were investigated. The results show that a favorable interface containing C–O and O–Cu bond was formed between CNTs and matrix when the CNTs were coated with nano-Cu by ED method. Thus, we accomplished the uniformly dispersed CNTs in the CNTs/Cu powders and compacted composites, which eventually leads to the enhancement of the mechanical properties of the CNTs/Cu composites in the macro-scale environment. However, the interface structure can hinder the movement of carriers and free electrons and increase the interface thermal resistance, which leads to modest decrease of electrical and thermal conductivity of the CNTs/Cu composites.
