Simultaneous engineering on absorption window and transportation geometry of graphene-based foams toward high-performance solar steam generator

Yanjun Li,Ruhao Zan,Yuanjin Wang,Longqiang Shang,Ronghui Wu,Yue Liu,Zhenggang Rao,Kai Yao,Yi Liu,Linfeng Fei

Graphene-based materials are frequently highlighted as the candidate for solar steam generation (SSG) because of their advantages such as high solar absorption, tunable structure and low cost. However, graphene itself is not a “perfect” absorber for full solar spectrum and cannot efficiently transport water on its surface due to its intrinsic physicochemical characteristics. Here we designed and synthesized a graphene foam in a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous structure with silicon carbide nanoparticles anchored on graphene surfaces. The systematical characterizations confirm that the hybrid structure extends the solar absorption window of graphene in full solar spectrum; and moreover, the in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) experiments suggest the incorporation of SiC nanoparticles on two-dimensional graphene surface improves the condensation and transportation kinetics of water in the foam. As a result, the SSG device based on the graphene-SiC composite demonstrates an improved energy conversion efficiency up to 95% under one sun illumination compared with those of previous reported graphene-based materials. The findings may shed new light on the technologies for solar-energy-water nexus.

Assembly of polyoxometalate with graphene foam as a compressible monolithic catalyst for biodiesel production

Xiaoting Jing,Zhen Li,Bing Lu,Yuyang Han,Yingnan Chi,Changwen Hu

Compressible monolithic catalysts exhibit remarkable advantages over traditional powder ones, but the fabrication of polyoxometalate (POM)-containing compressible catalyst is rarely explored. Herein, a compressible monolith, PW 12 @GF, has been fabricated by immobilizing H 3 PW 12 O 40 (PW 12 ) catalyst on elastic graphene foam (GF). Moreover, FT-IR and XPS spectra analysis and leaching test reveal that the delocalization of protons on POM occurs during the assembly of PW 12 @GF, and the delocalized protons connect POM and GF into a stable composite. Importantly, biodiesel production is effectively promoted by PW 12 @GF under mild conditions (60 °C) without stirring, and the product can be easily separated from the catalyst by compression. Moreover, its catalytic activity is basically maintained after five cycles. Notably, the catalytic activity of PW 12 @GF (conversion: 97 %) in the heterogeneous system is even comparable to that of homogeneous PW 12 and strong Brønsted acidity and the lipophilic surface of the catalyst account for the excellent performance.

Three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide foam modified with ZnO nanowires for enhanced microwave absorption properties

Changqing Song,Xiaowei Yin,Meikang Han,Xinliang Li,Zexin Hou,Litong Zhang,Laifei Cheng

Flexible and high-performance electromagnetic absorbing materials of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical reduced graphene oxide (RGO) foams decorated with in-situ grown ZnO nanowires (ZnO nws ) were realized by a direct freeze-drying and hydrothermal process. The unique structure not only effectively reduces agglomeration of RGO and the density of composites, but also makes great contributions to impedance match, dielectric loss and inner scattering, achieving enhanced microwave absorption performance . When RGO foam is 0.8 mg/mL, the ZnO nws /RGO foam/PDMS composite with 3.3 wt% absorber loading attains a minimum reflection loss value of −27.8 dB at 9.57 GHz with a thickness of 4.8 mm, and a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 4.2 GHz covering the whole X band (8.2–12.4 GHz). The fundamental microwave absorption mechanism of the composites is discussed. These results demonstrate a promising method to fabricate an economical, lightweight, broadband and highly efficient microwave absorption material .

3D Single-Layer-Dominated Graphene Foam for High-Resolution Strain Sensing and Self-Monitoring Shape Memory Composite

Jiasheng Rong,Jianxin Zhou,Yucheng Zhou,Cong Hu,Luxian Li,Wanlin Guo

Flexible intelligent materials are desired to effectively regulate their own deformation and accurately sense their immediate morphology at the same time. Graphene foam is an attractive material for strain sensing and electrical/thermal performance control due to its outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. However, graphene-foam-based materials with both strain sensing and deformation control capabilities are rarely reported. Here, a multiscale design of graphene foam with a single-layer-graphene-dominated microstructure and resilient 3D network architecture, which leads to exceptional strain sensing performance as well as modulation ability of the electrical and thermal conductivity for shape memory polymers, is reported. The graphene foams exhibit a strain detection limit of 0.033%, a rapid response of 53 ms, long-term stability over 10 000 cycles, significant thermoacoustic effect, and great heat-generation and heat-diffusion ability. By combining these advantages, an electro-activated shape-memory composite that is capable of monitoring its own shape state during its morphing process, is demonstrated.

Lightweight, thermally insulating and stiff carbon honeycomb-induced graphene composite foams with a horizontal laminated structure for electromagnetic interference shielding

Ye Yuan,Liyang Liu,Minglong Yang,Tieliang Zhang,Fan Xu,Zaishan Lin,Yujie Ding,Chunhui Wang,Jianjun Li,Weilong Yin,Qingyu Peng,Xiaodong He,Yibin Li

In this study, lightweight but stiff carbon monolith with unique laminated inner structure for high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is designed and prepared. The carbon monolith is consisting of carbon honeycomb structure which was filled with a horizontal laminated reduced graphene foam structure that is perpendicular to the cell wall. The stiff carbon honeycomb (CH) structure not only acts as a conductive and load-bearing framework, but also as the induced source for the growth of ice crystals to make a highly aligned laminated structure in the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) foam, by utilizing the big difference in thermal conductivity between air and the carbon cell wall. Consequently, a EMI shielding effectiveness of around 36–43 dB and remarkable specific EMI shielding effectiveness of 688.5 dB cm 3  g −1 in the X-band is achieved. More importantly, the addition of CH structure significantly increases the compressive stress of rGO foam to 2.02 MPa, almost which is 6760 times higher than common rGO foam. Moreover, the carbon monolith shows a thermal conductivity of 0.057 W/(m·K) and exhibits good flame retardancy . These results indicate that the carbon monolith is an ideal component for high-performance EMI shielding material, which has great potential applications in aviation and the aerospace industry.

Three-dimensional Ag/carbon nanotube-graphene foam for high performance dendrite free lithium/sodium metal anodes

Bofang Tian,Zhenxin Huang,Xilian Xu,Xiehong Cao,Hui Wang,Tingting Xu,Dezhi Kong,Zhuangfei Zhang,Jie Xu,Jinhao Zang,Xinjian Li,Ye Wang

Although lithium metal and sodium metal are promised as ideal anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs), they still suffer from inevitable dendrite growth. In light of this, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are sputtered onto three-dimensional carbon nanotube decorated graphene foam (3D CNT-GF) to construct superior 3D Ag/CNT-GF composite matrix for lithium metal anodes (LMAs) and sodium metal anodes (SMAs). With this design, lithiophilic/sodiophilic Ag NPs could provide favorable sites to guide Li/Na metal nucleation and growth, thus leading to low nucleation overpotentials, high Coulombic efficiency and long cycle performance. Accordingly, 3D Ag/CNT-GF electrodes can stably cycle for 1000 and 750 cycles at 3 mA cm −2 with 1 mAh cm −2 for SMAs and LMAs, respectively. More attractively, it can also stably sustain 300 cycles (SMAs) and 500 cycles (LMAs) at a large current density of 5 mA cm −2 with 1 mAh cm −2 . The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the lithiophilic/sodiophilic electrode surface, 3D porous electrode structure and the dendrite-free morphology as demonstrated by ex-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and in-situ optical microscopy analyses. Furthermore, full cells based on Na@3D Ag/CNT-GF||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @carbon (NVP@C) and Li@3D Ag/CNT-GF||LiFePO 4 (LFP) could deliver highly reversible capacities of 90.1 and 106.4 mAh g −1 , respectively, at 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles for SIBs and LIBs, respectively. This work demonstrates a novel 3D Ag/CNT-GF matrix for boosting Li/Na deposition stability for their future applications.

Enhanced thermal conductivity of epoxy composites reinforced with oriented polydopamine-graphene foam complexed by metal ions

Jin Wang,Penggang Ren,Zhengyan Chen,Tong Wu,Fangfang Wang,Caiyin You

Although graphene has aroused considerable interest in the thermal conductive enhancement of polymer composites for its superb intrinsic thermal conductivity, the enhancement efficiency is still limited by its production-induced defects, misalignment and intense phonon interface scattering. Herein, the three-dimensional (3D) polydopamine-graphene foam (PGF) with high orientation and good interfacial bonding has been prepared by electro-exfoliation, surface modification and unidirectional-freezing. This unique structure imparts excellent thermal conductivity, electrical insulation and good mechanical property to the PGF/epoxy (PGF/EP) composite. The highly arranged and compact stacked PDA-graphene sheets bound by metal ions provide heat conduction paths for effective phonon transport within the matrix. The manufactured PGF/EP shows enhanced through-plane thermal conductivity of 3.48 W/m·K with 3.02 vol% of PGF, excellent surface & volume electrical resistivity (2.7 × 10 11 Ω and 1.65 × 10 11 Ω·cm) and high mechanical strength (82.74 MPa), as well as the outstanding heat dissipation performance. Therefore, the PGF/EP composites prepared in the present study have a broad application prospect in advanced electronic packaging materials.

Direct Laser Writing of the Porous Graphene Foam for Multiplexed Electrochemical Sweat Sensors

Li Yang,He Wang,Abu Musa Abdullah,Chuizhou Meng,Xue Chen,Anqi Feng,Huanyu Cheng

Wearable electrochemical sensors provide means to detect molecular-level information from the biochemical markers in biofluids for physiological health evaluation. However, a high-density array is often required for multiplexed detection of multiple markers in complex biofluids, which is challenging with low-cost fabrication methods. This work reports the low-cost direct laser writing of porous graphene foam as a flexible electrochemical sensor to detect biomarkers and electrolytes in sweat. The resulting electrochemical sensor exhibits high sensitivity and low limit of detection for various biomarkers (e.g., the sensitivity of 6.49/6.87/0.94/0.16 μA μM–1 cm–2 and detection limit of 0.28/0.26/1.43/11.3 μM to uric acid/dopamine/tyrosine/ascorbic acid) in sweat. The results from this work open up opportunities for noninvasive continuous monitoring of gout, hydration status, and drug intake/overdose.

Tapered cross-linked ZnO nanowire bundle arrays on three-dimensional graphene foam for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of levodopa

Huang Shuo,Zhang Haopeng,Gao Xin,Su Hang,Lan Jingming,Bai He,Yue Hongyan

It is crucial to accurately and rapidly monitor the levodopa (LD) concentration for accurate classification and treatment of dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. In this paper, 3D graphene foam (GF) with a highly conductive network is obtained by chemical vapor deposition. 3D GF serves as the substrate for hydrothermal in situ growth of tapered cross-linked ZnO nanowire bundle arrays (ZnO NWBAs), enabling the development of a highly sensitive detection platform for LD. The formation mechanism of a tapered cross-linked ZnO nanowire bundle arrays on 3D GF is put forward. The integration of 3D GF and ZnO NWBAs can accelerate the electron transfer rate and increase the contact area with biomolecules, resulting in high electrochemical properties. The electrode composed of ZnO NWBAs on 3D GF exhibits significant sensitivity (1.66 µA·µM −1 ·cm −2 ) for LD detection in the concentration range 0–60 µM. The electrode is able to rapidly and specifically determine LD in mixed AA or UA solution. The selectivity mechanism of the electrode is also explained by the bandgap model. Furthermore, the successful detection of LD in serum demonstrates the practicality of the electrode and its great potential for clinical application.

Incorporation of Laminarin-Based Hydrogel with Graphene Foam To Enhance the Toughness of Scaffold and Regulate the Stem Cell Behavior

Lin Feng,Ying Hao,Mo Zhu,Yuanxin Zhai,Lingyan Yang,Yang Liu,Guosheng Cheng

Three-dimensional (3D) carbon-based scaffolds have rapidly risen in tissue engineering due to the excellent conductivity and unique topological structures. For specific in vivo application, it is desirable to maintain the rigidity and improve the toughness of scaffolds in response to the compression force from surrounding tissues. In light of the combined advantages of graphene and hydrogels, we here construct a 3D composite scaffold consisting of a graphene foam (GF) and a laminarin hydrogel (LAgel). The composite scaffold was fabricated by immersing the GF in an LA hydrogel precursor followed by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation to form a photocross-linked LAgel surrounding the GF. This composite scaffold exhibited the improved toughness compared with the GF or LAgel. The 3D GF can support cell attachment and cell spreading of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), while the in situ-formed LAgel with cell adhesive peptide arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD) conjugated can induce the cell migration. The results suggest that the approach to incorporate the LAgel with the 3D GF not only enhances the toughness of the scaffold but also offers a carrier to realize the cargo of biosignals to regulate cell behaviors, showing the potential of this composite scaffold for tissue regeneration.

Synthesis of Ni2P/Ni5P4 on porous N decorated rGO foam for efficiently electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Qing Xu,Linlin Zang,Ziying Li,Fengtong Shen,Yanhong Zhang,Liguo Sun

As a new generation of non-precious metal catalysts , nickel phosphide is regarded as an ideal substitute for precious metal platinum in electrochemical hydrogen evolution . Here, a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst is developed by in situ growth of Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 heterostructures on porous N decorated rGO foam (named Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 /N-rGO). The porous rGO foam structure provides a larger surface area and abundant active sites. The Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 nanoparticles with heterostructures are uniformly distributed on the rGO sheet, which enhance the charge transfer ability. The decorating of N element also correspondingly improves the HER performance. The as-prepared Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 /N-rGO exhibits excellent HER performance in alkaline medium . When the current density is 10 mA cm −2 , the overpotential is only 22 mV. No obvious loss of HER activity after 2000 cyclic voltammetry indicates that the composite has excellent stability. This work presents a valuable route for fabricating inexpensive and high-performance catalysts for electrocatalysis .

Constraining Si Particles within Graphene Foam Monolith: Interfacial Modification for High-Performance Li+ Storage and Flexible Integrated Configuration

Yue Ma,Reza Younesi,Ruijun Pan,Chenjuan Liu,Jiefang Zhu,Bingqing Wei,Kristina Edström

Pulverization of electrode materials and loss of electrical contact have been identified as the major causes for the performance deterioration of alloy anodes in Li-ion batteries. This study presents the hierarchical arrangement of spatially confining silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) within graphene foam (GF) for alleviating these issues. Through a freeze-drying method, the highly oriented GF monolith is engineered to fully encapsulate the Si NPs, serving not only as a robust framework with the well-accessible thoroughfares for electrolyte percolation but also a physical blocking layer to restrain Si from direct exposure to the electrolyte. In return, the pillar effect of Si NPs prevents the graphene sheets from restacking while preserving the highly efficient electron/Li + transport channels. When evaluated as a binder-free anode, impressive cycle performance is realized in both half-cell and full-cell configurations. Operando X-ray diffraction and in-house X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the pivotal protection of GF to sheathe the most volume-expanded lithiated phase (Li 15 Si 4 ) at room temperature. Furthermore, a free-standing composite film is developed through readjusting the pore size in GF/Si monolith and directly integrated with nanocellulose membrane (NCM) separator. Because of the good electrical conductivity and structural integrity of the GF monolith as well as the flexibility of the NCM separator, the as-developed GF/Si-NCM electrode showcases the potential use in the flexible electronic devices.
