Incorporation of benzene rings and nickel atoms into g-C3N4 framework with enhanced spatial charge transfer for efficient photocatalysis

Xingguo Wang,Yingying Qin,Jian Lu,Weidong Qin,Honghui Teng

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 , CN) has garnered significant attention in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production due to its unique electronic structure and ease of functional modification. However, the photocatalytic performance of CN is substantially limited by sluggish charge carrier dynamics and a scarcity of active centers. Herein, a novel photocatalyst is designed by modifying CN with nickel atoms and introducing benzene rings (Ni-BCN) onto its structure. The optimized Ni-BCN photocatalyst demonstrates remarkable photocatalytic activity without Pt as a co-catalyst. The hydrogen evolution rate reaches 1844.3 μmol g -1 h −1 , which is nearly 49.7 times higher than that of pristine CN. This significant enhancement is primarily attributed to the fact that the introduction of benzene rings into the CN framework provides driving force for improving charge separation within the in-plane, optimizing the energy band through an extended π-conjugated structure to enhance light absorption, and forming van der Waals heterojunctions that facilitates interlayer electron flow. Additionally, nickel atoms as active sites accelerate proton adsorption and reduce the free energy barriers of hydrogen evolution. This work purposefully optimizes the properties of CN by regulating its molecular structure, thereby fully leveraging these advantages in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

One-pot construction of highly active defective g-C3N4 via hydrogen bond of the biomass for the improvement of CO2 conversion

Leizhi Zheng,Yang Xu,Chenyang Huang,Jia Liu,Lei Zhou,Chengbao Liu

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) containing conjugated tri-s-triazine units has a high abundance of amine and guanidine groups, which are ideal for the application of CO 2 conversion. However, absolute g-C 3 N 4 is inherently scarce in Lewis base sites, which leads to low catalytic activities. In this study, we present a simple and green method to in situ construct chrysanthemum stalk-derived porous carbon/ highly active defective g-C 3 N 4 (PC/g-C 3 N 4 ) through hydrogen bond, increasing the surface area and a high density of Lewis base sites. The chrysanthemum stalk contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, which possess a significant number of hydroxyl functional groups and drain channels, thereby providing more hydrogen bonding for highly active defective g-C 3 N 4 . The XPS spectra revealed that, in comparison to PC/g-C 3 N 4 –1 and PC/ g-C 3 N 4 –2.5, PC/g-C 3 N 4 –2 exhibited a higher C-NH 2 content at the edge of the nitrogen element. PC/g-C 3 N 4 –2 had a high specific surface area to expose more active sites for absorbing CO 2 . The quantification of the base sites is determined by the peak area of the thermal programmed desorption of CO 2 and is 229.6 μmol/g for PC/g-C 3 N 4 –2. PC/g-C 3 N 4 –2 demonstrated excellent catalytic activity in the cycloaddition with hierarchical pores. The yield of cyclic carbonate was up to 99% with a selectivity of 99% under mild solvent-free conditions. The mechanistic studies indicate that PC/g-C 3 N 4 –2 not only captured CO 2 , but also provided hydrogen bonds to activate the oxygen atom of epichlorohydrin (ECH). It is our contention that the multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid materials have considerable potential for the production of cyclic carbonate.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Achieving Superlow Friction and Wear on Engineering Steel

Lin Li,Tao Lin,Jie Sun,Hanjun Gong,Yun Bai,Kai Gao

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a typical two-dimensional (2D) material acclaimed for its layered structure and electronic properties, showcasing promise across various domains such as catalysis, CO2 reduction, and lubrication. In this study, g-C3N4 is synthesized as an oil-based nanoadditive within oleic acid (OA), exhibiting superlow friction coefficient (COF) within steel/steel contacts under high pressure. When dispersed g-C3N4 in OA at a concentration of 0.25 wt %, the COF is reduced from 0.077 to 0.022 compared to the base oil. The amino groups in g-C3N4 promote the formation of continuous friction films, creating a composite tribofilm made of carbon layers, carbon nitride, and iron oxides. This tribofilm effectively prevents direct contact between tribopairs, leading to significant friction reduction and enhanced antiwear properties. These findings offer insights into the design of lubricant additives for base oils and highlight the promising potential of carbon nitride in lubrication and tribology applications.

Graphitic carbon nitride/titanium dioxide heterojunction for photocatalytic dyes degradation: performance enhancement and mechanism investigation

Zhu Wentao,Zhao Chenkai,Li Xinrui,Zhao Yang,Wang Huan

The construction of heterojunctions is an outstandingly valid strategy to modulate the properties of semiconductors. In this work, an anatase titanium dioxide nanoparticles/graphite-phase carbon nitride composite photocatalyst (g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 NPs) was prepared via loading g-C 3 N 4 derived from high-temperature calcination of melamine onto nanospherical TiO 2 NPs prepared by hydrothermal. A series of characterizations, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Ultraviolet–Visible diffuse reflectance absorption spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), were employed to study the surface morphology, crystal structure, and photoelectrochemical properties of the photocatalyst. Photocatalytic degradation experiments and cyclic stability tests were conducted to evaluate its performance in degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO). The advanced photocatalytic activity is owing to the synergistic interaction of g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 broadening the band gap and the formation of the Type-II heterojunction promoting separation of photogenerated charge. The optimized 20% g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 composite demonstrated outstanding degradation efficiency, achieving 98.6% RhB removal in 60 min and 99.0% MO removal in 70 min, indicating that the catalyst possesses excellent dye degradation capabilities.

Photo-transformation of graphitic carbon nitride synthesized from different precursors: Influence on environmental fate and photocatalytic water disinfection

Shi’en Lei,Wanjun Wang,Chao Wang,Weixuan Li,Zhe Xu,Guiying Li,Taicheng An

Photo-stability and environmental impacts of photocatalysts are critical issues for large-scale applications. Herein, photo-transformation properties of graphitic carbon nitride (CNs) as water disinfection photocatalysts synthesized from precursors of urea (UCN), thiourea (TCN) and melamine (MCN) were studied for the first time. Results demonstrated that all the CNs were unstable under photoaging, with photo-stability following the order of TCN < UCN < MCN. This was associated to the highest H 2 O 2 production ability of TCN, indicating the non-radical species were also important to determine the photo-stability of CNs. Photocatalytic disinfection performances were in the order of UCN > TCN > MCN, which was due to the differences in specific surface area and band structures. The disinfection activities were all decreased after photoaging, attributing to the partial decomposition of CNs. In addition, bacterial inactivation efficiencies of CNs aqueous filtrates (CN-FTs) after photoaging was firstly studied. Interestingly, it was unexpected to find that the CN-FTs possessed considerable photocatalytic disinfection activities with TCN-FT being the highest, probably due to the release of carbon dots-like substances. The water stability of TCN was also the highest due to its most negative Zeta potential leading to the lowest sedimentation rate, which indicates TCN and its photo-transformation products might cause persistent adverse environmental effects when releasing into water bodies. This work highlighted that CNs from different precursors have distinct influence on photocatalytic water disinfection activity and environmental fate, which should be concerned for their real applications.

A nine-fold enhancement of visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production of g-C3N4 with TCNQ by forming a conjugated structure

Fengzhi Wang,Weisheng Lei,Xinhua Pan,Bin Lu,Zhizhen Ye

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by water splitting has become a very effective way to solve the energy crisis. For use in that process, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has drawn much attention for its response in the visible region. However, its insufficient sunlight absorption efficiency and easy recombination of photoinduced carriers restrict its photocatalytic activity. Herein, we demonstrate a two-step liquid ultrasonic method in water to synthesize a series of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)–C3N4 photocatalysts aiming to form a conjugated structure by 7,7,8,8-TCNQ. g-C3N4 was treated with APTES firstly on its surface in order to give a better interface contact with TCNQ. Benefiting from the conjugation effect between TCNQ and g-C3N4, the separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated carriers were significantly improved. Besides, introducing TCNQ also broadened the absorption region. Both of these points lead to the enhancement of photocatalytic H2 production rate, with the optimized 5% TCNQ–C3N4 giving a rate nearly 9.48 times that of pure g-C3N4. Also, 5% TCNQ–C3N4 (U) was prepared with unmodified g-C3N4, which exhibited a rate only 6.87 times that of pure g-C3N4, thus validating the necessity of surface modification. Our work reveals that the rational conjugated structure could modulate the electrical and optical properties of g-C3N4, yielding an improvement of photocatalytic activities.

Phosphor-doped graphitic carbon nitride-supported Pd as a highly efficient catalyst for styrene hydrogenation

Baining Lin,Yuxin Zhang,Yifan Zhu,Yingping Zou,Yingjie Hu,Xuhong Du,Huasheng Xie,Kang Wang,Yonghua Zhou

Developing the highly active Pd catalyst via facile synthesis technique for alkenes hydrogenation is a long-term goal to pursuit. Here, Pd catalyst with phosphor-doped g-C 3 N 4 as support was fabricated by calcination and impregnation technique. XRD and XPS indicated that phosphor was doped into the framework of g-C 3 N 4 ,resulting in the highly dispersed Pd loaded thereon. The resultant Pd catalyst exhibited an unprecedentedly high activity for styrene hydrogenation of 856.89 mmol Styrene ·min −1 ·g Pd −1 and TOF value of 18,974 h −1 attributed to the enhanced Pd dispersion, more Pd 0 species and the intrinsic advantages of the support. This work provides a new avenue for the fabrication of highly effective Pd catalyst over alkenes hydrogenation.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Microspheres Supported α-FeO(OH) Hybrids for Visible Light Photodegradation of MO

Wang Junlin,Yi Yongjie,Li Mengjia,Chang Yue,Zha Fei

Graphitic carbon nitride(g-C 3 N 4 ) microspheres supported α-FeO(OH) hybrids[α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 ] were prepared by means of a self-assembly method in deionized water. By UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, it has been confirmed that α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 has a wider absorption range than g-C 3 N 4 . The feature of α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 can be attributed to the efficient separation of the electron-hole pairs with photoluminescence spectra. The degradation rate of methyl orange(MO) is up to 99% under the optimal conditions of 110 min, initial concentration of 30 mg/L, an α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 dosage of 15 mg as well as visible light. The mechanism for this photocatalytic reaction was proposed, with hydroxyl radicals being a major active catalytic species.

Tuning the visible-light photocatalytic degradation activity of thin nanosheets constructed porous g-C3N4 microspheres by decorating ionic liquid modified carbon dots: roles of heterojunctions and surface charges

Bin Zhao,Baogang Wang,Hongsheng Lu,Shanshan Dai,Zhiyu Huang

Ionic liquid modified CDs and novel thin nanosheets constructed graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) microspheres were synthesized by the template method and by calcination of a supramolecular precursor, respectively. The CDs were decorated onto the surface of g-C3N4 by solvothermal treatment to tune the visible-light photocatalytic degradation performance of g-C3N4. The CDs could not only form heterojunctions with g-C3N4 by chemical bonding, π–π stacking and electronic attraction interactions, but also change the surface charges of g-C3N4 from negative to positive. The roles played by heterojunctions and surface charges in the photocatalytic performance of CDs (1.6 wt%)/g-C3N4 composites were explored by photocatalytic degradation of anionic (methyl orange, MO), nonionic (p-nitrophenol, p-NP) and cationic (methylene blue/rhodamine B, MB/RhB) pollutants. Compared with g-C3N4, the composite showed obviously higher and lower photocatalytic activity for MO/p-NP and MB/RhB degradation, respectively. These results demonstrated that the surface charges might play a positive or negative but dominant role by enhancing or inhibiting the absorption of pollutant molecules despite the fact that heterojunctions always played a positive role by promoting the light-harvesting ability and separation efficiency of photo-generated electron–hole pairs of g-C3N4.

Facile synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride via copolymerization of melamine and TCNQ for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Fengzhi Wang,Weisheng Lei,Xinhua Pan,Zhizhen Ye

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been regarded as an intriguing photocatalyst applying to hydrogen generation but suffering rapid recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and insufficient absorption under visible light. We developed a novel one-pot thermal copolymerization method of melamine as a precursor and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as a comonomer to synthesize modified g-C3N4 (abbreviated as X% TCNQ) for the first time, aiming to directly incorporate TCNQ molecular into carbon nitride skeleton for the substitution of low-electronegative carbon for high-electronegative nitride atom. Results revealed that the as-prepared photocatalysts by copolymerization of melamine with TCNQ retained the original framework of g-C3N4, and dramatically altered the electronic and optical properties of carbon nitride. Various measurements confirmed that as-synthesized samples exhibited larger specific surface areas, faster photogenerated charge transfer and broader optical absorption by decreasing the π-deficiency and extending the π-conjugated system, thus facilitating the photocatalytic activity. Specifically, the 0.3% TCNQ exhibited as high as seven times than the pristine g-C3N4 on photocatalytic H2 generation and kept its photoactivity for five circles. This work highlights a feasible approach of chemical protocols for the molecular design to synthesize functional carbon nitride photocatalysts by copolymerizing appropriate g-C3N4 precursor and comonomers.

Fabrication of interlayer β-CD/g-C3N4@MoS2 for highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate under simulated sunlight irradiation

Xiufang He,Zhansheng Wu,Yongtao Xue,Zhenzhen Gao,Xia Yang

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been considered to be a promising metal-free photocatalyst, although the high recombination rate of charge carriers and poor absorption of visible light have limited its applications. In order to overcome these problems, an interlayer composite photocatalyst that comprised β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), oxygen-doped C3N4 (O-C3N4) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was successfully constructed for the highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate in this study. The structure and morphology, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized via a series of characterization techniques. The average fluorescence lifetime of the composite photocatalyst was extended from 6.67 ns to 7.30 ns in comparison with that of g-C3N4, which indicated that the composite photocatalyst enhanced the absorption of visible light and also inhibited the recombination of electron–hole pairs. The mass ratio of MoS2 that corresponded to O-C3N4/MoS2-5 enabled the highest removal rate under simulated sunlight irradiation, which was almost twice that achieved using pure g-C3N4. Relative species scavenging experiments revealed that ·O2− was the main species during the process of photodegradation. Besides, a toxicity test indicated that glyphosate became less toxic or non-toxic after photodegradation. This study provided an effective, feasible and stable photocatalyst driven by simulated sunlight irradiation for the highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate.

Rational modulation of p-n homojunction in P-doped g-C3N4 decorated with Ti3C2 for photocatalytic overall water splitting

Zizheng Ai,Yongliang Shao,Bin Chang,Lei Zhang,Jianxing Shen,Yongzhong Wu,Baibiao Huang,Xiaopeng Hao

As a metal-free polymeric semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is a promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting but suffers from the insufficient optical absorption and sluggish utilization of photocarriers. Herein, based on the energy band engineering theory, a new design philosophy of tunable p-n homojunction is proposed and realized in a novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCN) material. Through regulating the tendency of transformation in p-n homojunction, a strong internal electric field is built and integrated with two secondary internal electric fields by further decorating with Ti 3 C 2 , leading to the formation of a triple-internal electric field system. Thus the spatial separation efficiency of photocarriers is improved and their lifetime is prolonged. The specific photocatalyst exhibits excellent overall water splitting performance in pure water with a notable quantum yield. This work presents a peculiar concept of adjustable p-n homojunction and holds great significance for the rational design of advanced photocatalyst in water splitting.
