Chemical vapor deposition of two-dimensional transition metal sulfides on carbon paper for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ke Wang,Fei Tang,Xiao-zhang Yao,Kumar Hitanshu,Lin Gan

Hydrogen is considered one of the most likely alternative clean energy fuel to traditional fossil fuels. One of the most attractive hydrogen production strategies is water splitting, but the need for expensive Pt precious metal catalysts to catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a problem. Recently, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), especially MoS 2 , have attracted intense interest as a non-precious metal HER catalyst due to their low cost and relatively high catalytic activity. However, their poor electron conductivity and the limited number of active sites at their edges have greatly limited their overall catalytic performance. We report the direct growth of three representative TMDs (MoS 2 , NbS 2 and WS 2 ) on a conductive carbon paper substrate using chemical vapor deposition and have studied the effects of temperature and gas flow rate on their morphology and structure. All the as-grown TMDs have a 2D nanosheet morphology and were aligned perpendicular to the carbon paper. The WS 2 nanosheets had the smallest sheet size with a diameter of ca. 100-200 nm and, more interestingly, were assembled into a one-dimensional nanofiber, leading to the highest HER activity. Additional electrochemical cathodic activation further improved the HER activity of the TMDs, and the structural changes after the activation were investigated by TEM combined with in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy. The activated NbS 2 contained large triangular or truncated triangular S vacancy areas, which is distinctly different from the individual S vacancies in MoS 2 .

Promoted photoelectrocatalytic degradation of BPA with peroxymonosulfate on a MnFe2O4 modified carbon paper cathode

Mingming Zhang,Yan Gong,Ning Ma,Xu Zhao

The combination of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) and sulfate radical (SO 4 − )-based advanced oxidation technology (SR-AOP) has been regarded as a promising technology for efficient removal of pollutants by in-situ generated reactive radicals in the field of environmental remediation. Herein, a novel PEC/SR-AOP system was constructed by employing a BiVO 4 as photoanode and a MnFe 2 O 4 modified carbon fiber paper (MnFe 2 O 4 /CFP) as cathode. The introduction of MnFe 2 O 4 greatly promotes the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation of CFP cathode, and the PEC process accelerates the PMS activation of MnFe 2 O 4 for the high-active SO 4 − production. As a result, the BiVO 4 -MnFe 2 O 4 /CFP system exhibited remarkably enhanced photoelectrocatalytic performances toward Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Nearly 100% of BPA can be degraded after 90 min irradiation under the optimal condition of 1.0 V applied bias and 1 mM PMS addition. The apparent rate constant of BPA degradation over the BiVO 4 -MnFe 2 O 4 /CFP PEC/PMS system is achieved to 0.0596 min −1 . Radical scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance confirmed that the generated OH and SO 4 − showed the responsible for BPA degradation during PEC reaction. The results of XPS and LSV tests indicated the favorable redox reaction between MnFe 2 O 4 /CFP and PMS, which results in the generation of high active SO 4 − . This work provided a promising way to synthesize other novel PEC systems with excellent photoelectrocatalytic performance for environmental pollutants removal.

Synergistically improve the strength and porosity of carbon paper by using a novel phenol formaldehyde resin modified with cellulose nanofiber for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Bin Wen,Ruyin Ma,Gang Yang,Chongchao Li,Yike Huang,Linxin Zhong,Zhou Sha,Yifei Chen,Shuhan Cai,Daliang Guo,Jing Li,Qianyu Sun,Yinchao Xu,Tianzhong Yuan,Xin Zhang

To optimize the imbalance between the interfacial bonding and porosity properties of carbon paper (CP) caused by phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) impregnation, and therefore improve the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), a new approach through cellulose nanofibers grafted with methyl methacrylate (CNFM) as a modified reinforcement and pore-forming agent for PF is investigated. Through suppressing the methylene backbone fracture of CNFM-modified PF during its thermal depolymerization, the interfacial bonding between PF matrix carbon and carbon fibers is enhanced. Compared with unmodified CP, the in-plane resistivity of CNFM-modified CP is reduced by 35.78 %, while the connected porosity increases to 82.26 %, and more homogeneous pore size distribution (PSD) in the range of 20–40 μm is obtained for CNFM-modified CP. Besides, the tensile strength, flexural strength, and air permeability of CNFM-modified CP increase by 72.78 %, 298.4 %, and 103.97 %, respectively. In addition, CNFM-modified CP achieves the peak power density of PEMFCs to 701.81 mW·cm −2 , exhibiting 10.98 % improvement compared with commercial CP (632.39 mW·cm −2 ), evidently achieving an integral promotion of CP and comprehensive performance.

ZhuanZhuan Shi,XiaoShuai Wu,LiXia Gao,YunLi Tian,Ling Yu

In the present study, a carbon paper electrode (CPE)/cells-in-paper/CPE sandwich device was developed for the in situ detection of small molecules produced from cells growing in paper 3 dimensional matrix. To demonstrate the real-time assay capability of the electrodes/cells-in-paper sandwich device, carbon nanotube/graphene/MnO2 nanocomposite was synthesized to functionalize the working electrode. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization proved that MnO2 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on nanotube sidewalls and graphene sheets. The carbon nanotube/graphene/MnO2 nanocomposite functionalized electrode/cells-in-paper sandwich device showed specific response against hydrogen peroxide. The fully assembled device displayed a linear range up to 25 mM with a sensitivity of 6.25 μA mM−1 cm−2 and a detection limit of 6.7 μM hydrogen peroxide. In addition, in situ detection of hydrogen peroxide production from cells growing in matrigel impregnated paper was successfully demonstrated on the electrodes/cells-in-paper sandwich device, highlighting the potential application of this low-cost paper analytical device for cell biology studies.

Enhanced electrocatalytic water splitting performance and stability of MnO₂ through Ru doping

Yong Luo,Feng Gao,Jie Zhang,Xiaoyan Zhang

The development of efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for advancing sustainable hydrogen production. Herein, a facile one-step hydrothermal strategy was developed to synthesize Ru-doped α-MnO 2 nanoneedles grown on carbon paper (Ru 0.02 MnO 2 /CP) as a novel bifunctional electroccatalyst. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that Ru incorporation induces uniform lattice distortion in MnO 2 , significantly increasing the density of oxygen vacancies and catalytically active Mn 3+ sites. The structural modifications enhance the intrinsic electrochemical activity and structural stability of MnO 2 during HER/OER in alkaline media. The optimized Ru 0.02 MnO 2 /CP catalyst exhibited exceptional bifunctional performance, achieving low overpotentials of 107 mV (HER) and 261 mV (OER) at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, stability testing under continuous operation reveals <6 % activity loss over 100 h at 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Ru doping optimizes the adsorption/desorption energetics of reaction intermediates (*H for HER; *OH for OER), effectively lowering the kinetic barriers and overpotentials for both half-reactions. This work provides a rational strategy for designing high-performance and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalyst, advancing their potential application in scalable water electrolysis for sustainable hydrogen production.

The highly efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on copper nanocrystalline/carbon hybrid catalysts: structure–function relations

Xingyu Lu,Ke Qi,Di Wang,Xueya Dai,Wei Qi

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a high-value platform molecule that can replace the fossil derivative terephthalic acid in the synthesis of important chemicals. FDCA can be synthesized from the oxidation of the biomass derivative 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In this study, we loaded Cu-based catalysts with different morphologies and chemical states on carbon paper, and it was found that the Cu nanocrystalline/carbon paper catalyst with a thin and scattered dendrite structure (Cu(NSD)/CP) exhibits the best performance for the electrooxidation of HMF (96% yield and 100% selectivity for FDCA), which is attributed to the fact that the Cu0 and Cu1+ species in the catalyst are easily oxidized in situ to Cu2+ species, showing high catalytic activity during the reaction process. This paper highlights the importance of the identification of active sites and the rational design of catalysts based on structure–function relations.

Nitrogen and Oxygen Dual Self-Doped Flexible PPTA Nanofiber Carbon Paper as an Effective Interlayer for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Ling Meng,Yao Li,Qixuan Lin,Jin Long,Yang Wang,Jian Hu

The shuttle effect of polysulfides during charge and discharge processes is a critical problem that seriously limits the application of Li–S batteries. Herein, a flexible nanofiber carbon paper was first fabricated from poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) nanofiber and carbon fiber (CF) as an effective interlayer for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries. The nanofiber carbon paper processes abundant meso-/micropores and high heteroatom contents, which are beneficial for the inhibition of the shuttle effect of polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical catalysis. Therefore, the electrochemical reaction kinetics are remarkably improved. The primary discharge capacity of cells with PPTA/CF carbon paper achieves 1373 mA h g–1 at 0. 1 C with a 96.2% utilization rate of active materials. The specific reversible discharge capacity maintains 755 mA h g–1 at 5 C, with a 99.7% coulomb efficiency. This flexible nanofiber carbon paper will have a promising application in high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries.

Enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction of WS2–CoS2 heterostructure by synergistic effect

Yaqi Jing,Xiaoyu Mu,Chengwang Xie,Haile Liu,Ruijuan Yan,Haitao Dai,Changlong Liu,Xiao-Dong Zhang

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted significant research interest due to its promising performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Synergistic effect between materials interface can improve the electrocatalytic properties . In this work, the WS 2 –CoS 2 heterostructure supported on carbon paper (CP) was elaborately fabricated by a three-step method. Owing to the synergistic effect, WS 2 –CoS 2 heterostructure exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 100 mA/cm 2 and a small Tafel slope of 270 mV/dec toward HER. We demonstrate that the increased specific surface area and conductivity of the heterostructure play a key role in enhancing the overall catalytic efficiency. Moreover, the crystal lattice distortion in the heterostructure could induce charge redistribution and improve electron transfer efficiency, which may also benefit the whole HER activity.

In-situ photoelectrocatalytical formation of sulfate radicals on BiPO4 modified carbon paper electrode in sodium sulfate electrolyte for high efficient degradation of pefloxacin

Ruizhen Li,Yu Hu,Lijun Du,Jiawen Li,Jigang Yuan,Xingyong Liu

In recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOP) based on sulfate free radicals (SO 4 − ·) have attracted considerable attention due to the excellent advantages of SO 4 − · compared with hydroxyl radical (·OH). However, SO 4 − · generally produced by activating extra persulphates, which causes high cost and risk of secondary pollution. In this work, BiPO 4 modified carbon paper electrode (BiPO 4 /CP) successfully fabricated via simple method can be used as a photocatalyst to effectively activate sulfate originally existed in wastewater to generated sulfate radicals in-situ without adding any extrinsic chemical oxidants. Pefloxacin (PFX) was degraded effectively on BiPO 4 /CP with the help of applied potential. CP with large surface area and high electrical conductivity as an excellent support for BiPO 4 is beneficial to improve the reutilization, electron transfer and photocatalytic performance of BiPO 4 . Moreover, BiPO 4 with large bandgap has sufficient redox capacity to produce not only ·OH, superoxide radical (·O 2 − ), but also SO 4 − ·, which is crucial for photocatalytic pollutant degradation. Detailed characterizations give strong evidences of the successful fabrication of photocatalyst, thermodynamic feasibility of SO 4 − · in-situ formation, the generation of free radicals, and the possible mechanism. Consequently, under the optimal conditions (pH=5.6, +1.0 V (vs.SCE), [SO 4 2− ]=10 mM, 61 μW cm −2 UV light irradiation, 33 mg BiPO 4 loaded on CP), the degradation efficiency of PFX (10 mg/L) was 87.8% in 120 min, which was 5.1 ad 8.2 times higher than that in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic system and 3.3 times higher than that without SO 4 2− . Meanwhile, BiPO 4 /CP maintains high level of degradation efficiency of PFX after 6 cycles under the optimal conditions.

One-Pot Electrodeposition of a PANI:PSS/MWCNT Nanocomposite on Carbon Paper for Scalable Determination of Ascorbic Acid

Stuart J. Robertson,Jinping Cheng,Minhua Shao

In recent years, there has been growing demand for the monitoring of ascorbic acid levels, especially in underdeveloped populations where ascorbic acid deficiency affects up to 74% of individuals. To facilitate widespread ascorbic acid screening, we have developed a highly scalable conductive polymer nanocomposite with excellent ascorbic acid sensing performance. The material is based on polyaniline, which is deposited in a single step in the presence of polystyrene sulfonate and multi-walled carbon nanotubes onto carbon paper. The modified electrodes take advantage of the electrocatalytic properties of polyaniline toward ascorbic acid, which are boosted by the proton donating polystyrene sulfonate polymer and the high surface area of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The morphology and composition of the composite are characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the electrochemical characteristics are examined using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified electrode shows good ascorbic acid sensing characteristics, with a linear range of 1–400 μM, a sensitivity of 546 μA mM−1 cm−2, and a limit of detection of 0.11 μM. High performance and low cost results in a promising platform to support the widespread, cheap monitoring of ascorbic acid deficiency.

PEDOT-PSS coated sulfur/carbon composite on porous carbon papers for high sulfur loading lithium–sulfur batteries

Zhijie Gong,Qixing Wu,Fang Wang,Xu Li,Xianping Fan,Hui Yang,Zhongkuan Luo

Increasing the sulfur loading in the cathode of a lithium–sulfur battery is an important way to improve its capacity for practical applications. To achieve this, the present work proposes using PEDOT-PSS to encapsulate sulfur/carbon black (S/BP) by a facile solution mixing method and the formed composite is then coated on a porous carbon paper. It is believed that the formation of a core/shell structure in the PEDOT@S/BP composite can promote the electron transport and effectively impede the diffusion of polysulfides, and the porous carbon paper is able to retain the electrolyte containing the dissolved polysulfides in the cathode and alleviate the adverse effect of sulfur volumetric expansion. Due to such advantages, the proposed cathode, with a high sulfur loading of 3 mg cm−2, can yield a high reversible capacity of 1041 mA h g−1 and an excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 868 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles and an average coulombic efficiency of 99.4%.

Biosynthetic graphene enhanced extracellular electron transfer for high performance anode in microbial fuel cell

Shaowei Zhou,Mei Lin,Zechao Zhuang,Peiwen Liu,Zuliang Chen

Extracellular electron transfer from the biofilm surface to the electrode is the key step for the microbial fuel cell (MFC). More recently, graphene has attracted tremendous attentions for bioelectrochemical applications due to its good biocompatibility, high electrical conductivity and large surface area. In the current work, we report a facile and green synthesis of graphene-modified carbon paper (CP) as an efficient MFC anode through plant-mediated bioreduction coupled with self-assembly. Three-dimensional CFP uniformly wrapped by curled and wrinkled biosynthesized graphene enables more surface area for microbe adhesion and mass diffusion. Significantly, nontoxic and biodegradable biomolecules extracted from Eucalyptus leaves act as reducing agent and adsorb on the graphene, rendering the graphene surface become hydrophilic and biocompatible. Furthermore, the obtained graphene exhibit excellent bioelectrochemical interactions with the microbes. Equipped with the biosynthesized graphene-modified anode, the E. coli -catalyzed MFC delivered an enhanced maximum power density of 1158 mW/m 2 , 70% higher than a pristine graphene-modified one. This development provides not only a versatile and scalable synthesis strategy for biocompatible graphene-modified devices, but also indicates that biomolecules facilitate the extracellular electron transfer in bioelectrochemical process.
