In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU), a novel modifier, was used for the wet surface modification of talc, and its mechanism was investigated. Polypropylene (PP)-based composites with modified talc were synthesized and subjected to an examination of their mechanical properties. The wetting contact angle demonstrated that the modified talc exhibited an excellent modification effect at a specific amount of modifier (2.0 wt.%). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated the successful coating of WPU on the surface of the talc particles. SEM images revealed that modified talc displayed improved wettability, compatibility, and dispersion in PP/talc + WPU composites. The mechanical properties results showed that the PP/talc + WPU composites ensured superior comprehensive properties with a flexural strength of 55.9 MPa, impact strength of 4.72 kJ/m2, tensile strength of 34.8 MPa, and elongation of breaks of 32.4%. The incorporation of WPU-modified talc into plastic materials has been synthesized to leverage its beneficial properties, leading to reduced production costs and improved performance and functionality of the final product.

The dispersion state of fillers in the polymer matrix is an important factor to determine the properties of the polymer composites. Here, a new method for the accurate quantitative evaluation dispersion state of fillers through three-dimensional (3D) visualization and fractal analysis is reported. First of all, the data model of the dispersed state of the fillers is obtained through 3D visualization techniques. Then the fractal dimensions of different samples are obtained by software based on the fractal theory. As the filler increases, the fractal dimension is firstly decreases to a minimum and then increases. Under this extreme point condition, the theoretical dispersion state of the fillers is uniform. The accurate quantitative description of the dispersion state provides a new basis for establishing the relationship between the dispersion state and the mechanical properties of the fillers in various composites.

Hemp fibers-reinforced polypropylene (HP/PP) composite is strengthened and toughened by chemical treatment in a melt-blending process. The surface characters of the hemp fibers (HFs) treated by alkaline, γ-valerolactone (GVL) and dodecyl bromide (C12) are studied by FTIR. To evaluate the effect of each chemical treatment on HP/PP composites, the thermal stability, crystalline property, microstructure, mechanical property and rheology property have been studied. It is found that the composites with chemical treatment have improved mechanical property and thermal stability. Among those composites, the tensile modulus and maximum decomposition temperature (T max ) of the dodecyl bromide treated composites are highest, and increase 18 % and 10 °C when compared with raw HFs. It is reveals that dodecyl bromide treatment could improve the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. A possible reinforcing mechanical that hemp fibers react with dodecyl bromide in the composites have been proposed.

A novel mono-component flame-retardant additive poly (dimethylol melamine piperazine pyrophosphate) defined as PDMPP was synthesized from formaldehyde, melamine, and piperazine pyrophosphate. Its chemical structure was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 13 C and 31 P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and elemental analysis tests. PDMPP was incorporated into polypropylene (PP) matrix, and the fire-retardant performance, thermal properties, and water resistance of PP composites were investigated in detail. PP/23 wt% PDMPP composites before and after water resistance tests both achieved UL-94V-0 grade during vertical burning tests, and the limiting oxygen index was slightly declined from 26.7% to 26.3%. Small amount of PDMPP was extracted by hot water, and the weight loss percentage was 0.67% during water resistance tests. The piperazine and triazine rings in PDMPP contributed to a much better char-forming capability, and then a greatly expanded and coherent char residue was generated during combustion and exhibited excellent isolation effect. The heat release rate, carbon monoxide production, and smoke production rate of the flame-retarded PP composites before and after water resistance tests were effectively suppressed to a low level. Consequently, the introduction of PDMPP apparently improved the fire safety of PP composites as well as excellent water-resistant performance.

By adjusting the molar ratios of antistatic monomer of octyl phenol ethylene oxide acrylate (denoted as AS), rigid monomer of methyl methacrylate (denoted as MMA), and flame-retardant monomer of 2-(phosphoryloxymethyl oxyethylene) acrylate (denoted as FR), a series of flame-retardant antistatic copolymers poly (octyl phenol ethylene oxide acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate-co-phosphoryloxymethyl oxyethylene acrylate) (donated as AMF) were synthesized through radical polymerization. Among the obtained copolymers, two copolymers, AMF162 (the feed molar ratio of AS, MMA, and FR as 1 : 6 : 2) and AMF1104 (the feed molar ratio of AS, MMA, and FR as 1 : 10 : 4) with different concentrations were added into polypropylene (PP) to prepare PP-AMF162 and PP-AMF1104 series of composites. The thermal stability, limiting oxygen index, the antistatic property, and mechanical properties of PP composites were tested and analyzed. PP-AMF162 series composites have excellent antistatic effect. When the AMF162 content was equal to or <15 wt %, the impact strength of PP-AMF162 composites was higher than that of pure PP. The results indicated that copolymer AMF162 was a suitable flame-retardant and antistatic additive for PP. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132 , 41677.

Natural fibers have recently become an alternative reinforcement for composite products owing to their light-weightiness, renewability and biodegradability. However, they have certain drawbacks including hygroscopic nature, low compatibility with the polymer matrices and inferior mechanical properties when compared to synthetic fibers. This study aims to develop a one-way enset fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composite. In this study, long and aligned enset fibers were interlaced with PP yarns to form a woven mat. The mat was surface treated, and later the film stacking method was applied to develop the composite via hot pressing. The mechanical properties of the developed composites were characterized. The results showed that bis[3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl] tetrasulfide (1.5 wt% Si69) and 3glycidyloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (5 wt%GPs) treated unidirectional enset fiber woven mat showed the highest tensile strength which shows an increase of 266.98% and 218.14%, respectively, relative to the pure PP. In terms of flexural strength, enset fibers treated with NaOH (3.5 wt%) and EVsi69 (1.5 wt%) showed the greatest improvement of 218.14% and 151.64% respectively over pure PP. Therefore, the developed composite samples confirmed that enset fiber can be effectively reinforced with PP for the application of automotive and construction industries.

Natural fiber reinforced plastics (NFRPs) represent a promising category of emerging materials for sustainable industrial development owing to their renewability, degradability, and lightweight. However, the polarity mismatch between the fibers and polymer matrices weakens the mechanical properties of NFRPs. To address this issue, a novel hierarchical interface design was proposed here through the co-modification of silane coupling agents (SCAs) and zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs), which exhibits not only high efficiency but also low energy consumption and environmental friendliness. Specifically, the hierarchical interface design was demonstrated on jute fibers (JFs)/polypropylene (PP) composites, where the JFs/ZnO interfaces were chemically bonded through complexation, chelation, or coordination using various SCAs; meanwhile, the ZnO/PP interfaces were physically bonded by interlocking effect. The experimental testing results indicated the exceptional mechanical properties of modified JFs and their composites. The JFs modified with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) and ZnO NRs exhibited an increase of 34.3% and 55.8% in single-fiber tensile strength and tensile modulus , respectively, compared to sololy ZnO coated JFs, and also showed an augment of 30.8% in the interfacial shear strength with PP resin. Thus, the transverse and longitudinal tensile strength of JFs/PP composites with combined modification of KH560 and ZnO NRs were 19.2% and 46.5% higher than untreated ones. The interfacial enhancement mechanism was ascribed to the synergistic effect of chemical bonding and physical interlocking, as revealed by molecular dynamics simulation and observation of fracture morphologies. The findings offer a cost-effective solution for developing JFs/PP composites with superior interfacial and mechanical properties, thereby promoting the practical applications and value of NFRPs.

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets with nanosized and microsized level were synthesized and used as fillers in an isotactic polypropylene (PP) matrix. The nucleation and crystallization behavior of PP/LDH composites (denoted as 1-PPLx and 2-PPLx for composites containing nanosized and microsized LDH, respectively; x represents the mass percentage of LDH) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy techniques. It is found that the crystallization temperature of PP/LDH composites is largely enhanced and the half crystallization time is reduced remarkably relative to pure PP, especially for 2-PPLx composite. The 2-PPLx composite exhibits stronger heterogeneous nucleating ability and faster crystallization rate than 1-PPLx samples with the same LDH loading. In addition, the crystallized PP/LDH composites possess significantly enhanced thermal stability, gas barrier, and flame-retardant properties relative to neat PP, which would show a broad application prospect in engineering plastics and packing industry.

A novel hyperbranched polyphosphamide with abundant terminal groups of silane (HBPPA-Si) was synthesized from phosphorus oxychloride (POCl 3 ), 4, 4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), which had high thermal stability with a residual weight of 44.0 wt% at 800°C in nitrogen atmosphere. By incorporating 25 wt% of APP and HBPPA-Si with an optimum mass ratio of 1:1 into polypropylene (PP) composites, the PP/APP/HBPPA-Si composite reached V-0 rating at the UL-94 test and also obtained a maximum LOI value of 27.5%. Meanwhile, their peak heat release rates (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke production (TSP) reduced dramatically by 72.5%, 35.8%, and 62.7% respectively, when compared with virgin PP. The improved flame retardancy and smoke suppression of PP/APP/HBPPA-Si composite were ascribed to their excellent synergistic effect working efficiently in both condensed-phase and gas-phase actions. It is noticeable that the high-quality and high-quantity char residue possessing thermal-stable P- and Si-containing cross-linked structures can shield the underlying polymeric materials from further hydrolysis and simultaneously insulate the volatile fuel and heat transfer. Moreover, the weak polar silane shell of HBPPA-Si improved the interfacial compatibility of APP within the PP matrix, leading to enhanced mechanical properties with increasing HBPPA-Si concentration.

In the current work, the polypropylene composites filled with a M-T-ZnOw@Ag filler with antibacterial and antistatic properties was firstly synthesized. The composites and the fabricated nanocomposites were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and XPS techniques. With the addition of M-T-ZnOw@Ag, the antibacterial and antistatic properties of composite materials are greatly improved by the synergistic effect of AgNPs and T-ZnOw. When the filler content is 10 wt%, the antibacterial activity of the composite material against Gram negative ( Escherichia coli ) and Gram positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ) bacterial were 100%. And the surface resistivity was reduced to 5.5 × 10 10 Ω, fell by nearly 7 orders of magnitude compare with the neat PP. Furthermore, the composites showed better mechanical properties . The maximum impact strength of the composites is 56.3% higher than the neat PP. We believe the composite material with antibacterial and antistatic properties could greatly expand the application range of polypropylene materials.

A UV-curing flame-retardant coating with varying mass content of bisphenol A epoxy acrylate (BAEA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylic acid phosphate (PM-2) and polyurethane acrylate (PUA) were prepared, improving the flame-retardant and mechanical properties of jute/polypropylene (PP) composites. BAEA is the main film-forming prepolymer. Phosphate ester groups in PM-2 can promote the formation of carbon layer during combustion, and PM-2 can also be used as a good adhesion binder to improve the coating adhesion levels. The flexible long chain in PUA could reduce the shrinkage of the coating and provide further adhesion. To avoid the oxygen inhibition of the radical polymerization, isopropylthioxanthone and triethanolamine were used to reduce the reaction between photoinitiator phenyl bis (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide and oxygen. Compared to the uncoated composites (J–P), the peaks of heat release rate and total smoke production of coated composites decreased and limiting oxygen index values increased significantly, which revealed that the coatings showed effective fire protection effect. The bending strength of the coated composites can increase by 90% over uncoated sample J–P. This simple, low-cost and environmentally friendly UV-curing coating has good adhesion and can effectively improve the flame-retardant and mechanical properties of composites, which expand application of the flame-retardant fiber composites.

s The development of high-performance flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) composites is essential for enhancing fire safety across various industries. However, conventional intumescent flame retardant systems often suffer from poor char stability, weak condensed-phase protection, and insufficient gas-phase flame inhibition. To address these challenges, this study introduces a synergistic system combining Si-modified MXene (Si-MXene) and piperazine-modified ammonium polyphosphate (PAPP) to enhance the flame retardancy of PP composites. The piperazine modification of PAPP improves its compatibility with PP, facilitating uniform dispersion and enhancing its catalytic charring capability. Simultaneously, Si-modified MXene reinforces the char layer by promoting the formation of a highly graphitized and compact carbon structure, effectively blocking heat and oxygen transfer. As a result, the Si-MXene/PAPP system significantly reduces the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of PP by 52.6% and total heat release (THR) by 35.4%, while substantially improving thermal stability and char quality. Moreover, gas-phase analysis confirms that phosphorus radicals (P·, PO·) and non-flammable gases (NH₃, H₂O) scavenge combustion free radicals and dilute flammable volatiles, effectively suppressing flame propagation. This study provides a novel approach to de veloping high-efficiency flame-retardant PP composites, offering new insights into the synergistic mechanisms of MXene-based hybrid flame retardants and advancing the design of eco-friendly, high-performance polymeric materials for safety-critical applications.
