Preparation of modified polyvinyl formal vibration-damping material and its application in strawberry

Yiqin Zhang,Honglei Mu,Haiyan Gao,Hangjun Chen,Weijie Wu,Yanchao Han,Xiangjun Fang,Chuan Tong

Mechanical damage and microbial infestation were critical issues during strawberry transportation. This study prepared a modified polyvinyl formal (PVFM) vibration-damping material and investigated its application in strawberry transportation. This modified PVFM was primarily composed of polyvinyl alcohol, starch, formaldehyde, and allyl isothiocyanate. Our results showed that the modified PVFM had good vibration-damping and antifungal properties with 0.137 g/m 3 of density, a water absorption ratio value of 6.24, 278 Pa of tensile strength, 3.86 Pa of elastic modulus, a buffer coefficient of 0.318, and antifungal rates of 68.8% and 80.6% against Bacillus anthracis and Botrytis cinerea , respectively. Moreover, this modified PVFM could enhance the storage life of strawberry by improving PAL activity from 376 to 3,125 U/g, inhibiting POD activity with a maximum value of 3.1 U/g, and decreasing CAT activity from 324 to 35 U/g. The modified PVFM presented a good vibration-damping capacity and the potential to extend strawberry shelf life. Practical applications Berry fruits were vulnerable to mechanical damage caused by vibration during transportation, resulting in quality deterioration, rot, and aging. In this study, modified polyvinyl formal (PVFM) was prepared and was of low density and displayed good mechanical, vibration-damping, and antifungal properties. The modified PVFM could improve the storage life of strawberry. Thus, the modified PVFM could have potential application in berry fruits transportation.

Preparation of degradable modified atmosphere films by blending polybutylene glycol 2,5-furandicarboxylate - polytetrahydrofurandiol polyether esters with poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) and its application in strawberry preservation

Li Liu,Can He,Liang Zhu,Zhonghao Zhu,Kaijun Xiao

A block polyether esters (PBTF) with excellent toughness was synthesized in this study by polybutylene glycol 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PBF) as the hard segment and polytetrahydrofurandiol (PHTF) as the soft segment. The degradable and modified atmosphere films were developed by blending PBTF with poly (butyleneadipate-co- terephthalate) (PBAT). PBTF/PBAT film containing 3 % PBTF demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties and gas permeability. The tensile strength was increased by 17.21 % and the degradation properties of the film were improved. The CO 2 /O 2 gas separation coefficient was found to be as high as 13.99 and the water vapour permeability was reduced to 3.54 × 10 −13 g·cm/(cm 2 ·s·Pa), a reduction of 22.75 %. These properties contributed to maintaining a favorable atmosphere inside the package (2.6 %-3.5 % CO 2 and 15.6 %-16.7 % O 2 ) and inhibited microbial growth and nutrient loss, extending the shelf life of strawberries to 18 days (8 ℃). This degradable PBTF/PBAT modified atmosphere film has significant potential for use in fruit and vegetable packaging.

Effect of localized electrochemical pH and temperature synergistic modification on the structural and antibacterial properties of pectin/polyvinyl alcohol/zinc oxide nanorod films

Zhanwei Yang,Jin Wang,Hualei Chen,Hecheng Meng,Xiaobing Guo,Shujuan Yu

Two low-methoxy pectins (LMPs) were obtained by local electrochemical pH modification using an H-type double-layer water bath sealed electrochemical cell at the voltage of 180 V for 3 h. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of citrus peel pectin (CPP) prepared in the anodic part at room temperature (CPP-A 5/RT ) and in the cathodic part at 5 °C (CPP-C 5/RT ) were 346 kDa and 328 kDa, respectively, and the degrees of methylation (DM) were 36.8 % and 11.9 %. Moreover, the second-order kinetic model was most appropriate for the degradation processes, as free radicals were generated in the anodic part and β -elimination occurred in the cathodic part. Subsequently, CPP-A 5/RT and CPP-C 5/RT were utilized to fabricate food packaging film blending with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bcZnO (ZnO coupled with bentonite and colophony) nanorods , and Ca 2+ ions by casting method. Then the prepared films were studied for their ability to maintain the freshness of strawberries. The addition of Ca 2+ ions and bcZnO nanorods increased the thickness, water contact angle (WCA), and mechanical properties of the composite films, while decreased water vapor permeability (WVP). Therefore, the CPP-based films, supplemented with bcZnO nanorods and crosslinked with Ca 2+ ions by “egg-box” model, can serve as an antibacterial food packaging material for food preservation.

Enhanced Strawberry Preservation Using H. pluvialis Residue-Based Films

Liuchun Yao,Zhipeng Chen,Liangliang Huang,Feng Xian,Jing Gao

Novel films composed of Haematococcus pluvialis residue (HPR), chitosan (CS), citric acid (CA), glycerol (GL), and calcium chloride (CaCl₂) were developed to improve strawberry preservation. The rheological, structural, and functional properties of film-forming aqueous solutions (CS/CA, CS/CA/GL, CS/CA/GL/Ca, CS/CA/GL/Ca/HPR) were analyzed. It revealed HPR-induced shear-thinning behavior ( η = 2260   Pa·s) and enhanced rigidity (G'' = 750.51   Pa at 100   rad/s) via hydrogen bonding and Ca²⁺ crosslinking. FTIR and UV-vis spectra confirmed molecular interactions between carboxyl groups of HPR and amino residues of CS. The films with 0.6% HPR exhibited superior mechanical strength (tensile strength: 12.16   MPa; elongation at break: 135.36%), reduced water vapor permeability (1.14 × 10 -10 gm ⁻¹ s ⁻¹ Pa ⁻¹ ), and antioxidant activity (73.16% DPPH scavenging) than CS film. Antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli peaked at 0.8% HPR. The weight loss of strawberry was reduced by using the HPR film (13.08% vs. control: 29.5%), retained ascorbic acid (19.98   mg/100   g vs. control: 6.75   mg/100   g). The shelf life of strawberries was extended by 30 days, which is 15 days longer than that of those wrapped with polyethylene film. The polysaccharides, astaxanthin, and algal proteins in HPR improved barrier properties, oxidative stability, and microbial resistance. These results highlight the potential of HPR films as sustainable, multifunctional packaging to extend fruit shelf life.

Self-supporting noncovalent Choline Alginate/Tannic Acid/Ag antibacterial films for strawberry preservation

Xue Zhang,Xueqiao Li,Huiling Zhang,Shasha Jiang,Mingze Sun,Tao He,Tao Zhang,Wenna Wu

Packaging materials with peculiar antibacterial properties can shield off and inhibit microorganism proliferation, thus achieving packaging goals such as fresh-keeping, good hygiene, and biosafety. Especially, antibacterial films made of biocompatible substances have received wide attentions, which could effectively extend the shelf life, enhance food security, and guarantee economic benefits. Herein, a self-supporting hybrid antibacterial film was prepared based on non-covalently linked choline hydroxide (ChOH) and alginic acid (HAlg). Then tannic acid (TA) and silver ions were added to improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of this hybrid film. The rich hydroxyl groups from TA not only form multiple hydrogen bonds with ChAlg, but can also in situ reduce silver ions to silver nanoparticles, which were confirmed with various characterizations. In addition, the quantitative antibacterial test also proved that the antibacterial rate was significantly improved after adding silver ions, reaching >60 %. In an actual storage test, we found that choline cation (Ch + ) captured in antibacterial film by electrostatic interaction could achieve sustained release, i.e. sustainable bacteriostasis, and keep strawberries fresh for 48 h at room temperature. This work offers a new strategy for preparing antibacterial films via non-covalent weak interactions, explored an alternative antibacterial film for food packaging applications.

Multifunctional silver/ε-polylysine/diethyl ferulate composite films with improved anti-UV and antibacterial properties for food packaging

Lingyan Zheng,Zhifang Ning,Yumin Shen,Lei Tang,Sharuna De,Yi Wang,Hong Duan

Food spoilage is a major challenge to food safety. The development of multifunctional food packaging materials offers an innovative and effective strategy to mitigate this issue. In this study, we successfully synthesized the water-soluble Silver - polylysine - diethyl ferulate (Ag-PLL-DEF) polymer using a CuAAC reaction and an in situ growth method, which enhanced the dispersibility of diethyl ferulate (DEF) in aqueous solutions. This polymer was then blended with Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to create the Ag-PLL-DEF/PVA composite film. Our results demonstrate that incorporating DEF significantly improved the UV resistance of the composite film, with the UV shield rate of the 0.8 wt% Ag-PLL-DEF/PVA composite film reaching 98.62 %. After 30 days of continuous UV irradiation, the composite film exhibited outstanding light stability. The incorporation of Ag and PLL conferred remarkable antibacterial properties to the composite film. The inhibitory zone diameters of the 0.8 wt% Ag-PLL-DEF/PVA composite film against E. coli and S. aureus were 3.3 ± 0.2 mm and 2.75 ± 0.15 mm, respectively. Furthermore, a strawberry preservation experiment confirmed that the Ag-PLL-DEF/PVA composite film effectively inhibited bacterial growth and extended the shelf life of strawberries by up to 7 days. Similarly, preservation experiments with milk and jujube revealed that the composite films reduced photooxidation and significantly prolonged shelf life. This work provides valuable insights into the development of composite films with both anti-ultraviolet and antibacterial properties. It also offers a promising framework for advancing active food packaging technologies.

Use zein/chitosan active packaging films containing curcumin and γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks to preserve strawberry

Gui Xinchen,Chen Yaozhong,Cao Shihai,Yu Yadong

To address the limitations of conventional packaging materials, this work synthesized the curcumin-loaded γ-cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks, Cur@CD-MOF, which was subsequently combined with the zein-chitosan (ZC) matrix to form the Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film. The structure, physiochemical property, curcumin release behavior, antibacterial/antioxidant activity and strawberry preservation performance of the Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film were investigated. Results confirmed that Cur@CD-MOF was successfully incorporated into the ZC matrix. The incorporation of Cur@CD-MOF made the Cur@CD-MOF/ZC films own smoother and denser microstructures, and have a lower water vapor permeability and light transmittance. The tensile strength of Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film (5.99 ± 0.55 MPa) was significantly higher than that of ZC film (3.37 ± 0.15 MPa). The release of curcumin from the Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film was delayed in humid environments, and interestingly, it became faster under acidic conditions compared to that under neutral conditions. Cur@CD-MOF significantly improved the antioxidant activity of Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film and its inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Fruit preservation experiments showed that Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film effectively reduced the decay of strawberry. Moreover, Cur@CD-MOF/ZC film exhibited excellent preservation performances on other fruits and vegetables as well (winter jujube, broccoli, white mushroom, etc.), confirming their broad application potentials for the perishable produce preservation.

Biocompatible κ-Carrageenan Gel Films with Clove Essential Oil Nanoemulsion: Optimization, Properties, and Strawberry Preservation Efficacy

Yanhong Liu,Zechen Liu,Yixin Wang,Yujie Ma,Lingling Zhang,Mengyao Liu,Shuo Wang

Emulsion-filled hydrogels have attracted considerable attention due to their potential for inhibiting foodborne pathogens. However, development of packaging films based on essential oil nanoemulsion-filled hydrogels and their efficacy in food preservation remains relatively limited. This study engineered a biocompatible κ-carrageenan (KC)-based gel film loaded with clove essential oil nanoemulsion (CEON), exhibiting excellent dual-function antibacterial and antioxidant properties for preserving strawberries. The results revealed that incorporating CEON dramatically boosted the film's ultraviolet (UV) barrier properties (reducing UV transmittance to 0.02%), antimicrobial activity (producing an inhibition zone diameter of 6.5 cm), and antioxidant activity (demonstrating DPPH/ABTS radical scavenging rates exceeding 90%). Concurrently, the film exhibited remarkable flexibility, with its elongation at break increasing from 4.8% to 35%. The thus-formed unique porous network, characterized by a “hydrophobic surface yet moisture-permeable matrix”, effectively modulated the internal microenvironment. The CEON-loaded KC gel film not only effectively inhibited the growth of spoilage microorganisms on strawberries, extending their refrigerated shelf life to 10 days, but also demonstrated excellent biocompatibility as confirmed by seed germination and cytotoxicity assays. This study provides novel insights for developing high-performance and environmentally friendly food preservation materials.

Humidity-responsive composite film for strawberry freshness control

Sulin You,Hui Li,Zilin Qi,Hengping Xu,Tianhua Ding,Zainab Rasheed,Mingrui Chen,Wen Qin,Suqing Li,Yaowen Liu

In this study, a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based double-layer smart packaging film with both humidity-responsive and antimicrobial functionalities was developed for strawberry preservation and real-time freshness monitoring. CNC was extracted via sulfuric acid hydrolysis and modified with glycerol (Gly) to modulate its humidity-responsive properties, enabling reversible color transitions from blue to red within 30-98% relative humidity (RH). Zein/gelatin (Gel) nanofiber layers loaded with 3% Thymol (Thy) in a mass ratio of 1:1 was fabricated using electrospinning technology, achieving an encapsulation efficiency >85% and inhibition zones of 21.3 ± 0.5 mm ( Botrytis cinerea ) and 20.8 ± 0.4 mm ( Aspergillus niger ). The composite film exhibited a significantly reduced water vapor transmission rate (3.81 × 10 -11 g·Pa -1 ·s -1 ·m -1 ), indicating excellent moisture barrier properties. Strawberry preservation experiments demonstrated that the composite film effectively delayed hardness reduction (61.5% of initial firmness retained), reduced weight loss to 8.5%, and suppressed mold growth (<10 3 CFU/g). Through smartphone RGB analysis, the film color gradient (blue-orange-red) exhibited strong correlations with freshness indicators (hardness; mold colony count (CFU/g)), enabling non-destructive real-time monitoring. This study introduces an eco-friendly, cost-effective packaging solution that offers real-time freshness monitoring and prolonged strawberry preservation, paving the way for industrial applications in smart food packaging.

Detoxified and antimicrobial-enhanced olive mill wastewater phenols capping ZnO nanoparticles incorporated with carboxymethyl cellulose for fresh strawberry preservation

Zhiwen Qi,Xingying Xue,Xuefeng Xu,Hao Zhou,Wenjun Li,Guliang Yang,Pujun Xie

The underutilized by-products of hydrophilicity olive mill wastewater phenols (OPs) have great antimicrobial potential. ZnO NPs is one of most wildly used nano material with anti-bacterial function as well. This study aimed to prepare the detoxified and antimicrobial-enhanced OPs capping ZnO nanoparticles (OPs-ZnO NPs) containing metal core of ZnO NPs and organic shell of OPs, respectively. The OPs-ZnO NPs was chemically coordinated/chelated driven by Lewis bases (NaOH) in aqueous solution. The results obtained by SEM and TEM showed that those irregular sphere OPs-ZnO NPs were ranged from 58 to 92 nm, with an OPs caption of 35.40% (w/w). Importantly, the in vitro results showed that the strategy of capping OPs in ZnO NPs decreased the toxicity of ZnO NPs (< 0.02 g/L). Moreover, OPs-ZnO NPs presented a higher stability in simulated gastrointestinal digestion (Zn 2+ < 0.07 g/L after 12 h). The results also showed that the protective coating of OPs-ZnO NPs and OPs-ZnO NPs/CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) enhanced the antimicrobial activity of Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger . Furthermore, the coating of OPs-ZnO NPs/CMC decreased the weight loss and the rotting ratio of fresh strawberry , and ultimately prolonged its shelf-life at least 4 days under 25 ºC. Therefore, this study provided a biosafety strategy for the preparation of detoxified and antimicrobial enhanced OPs-ZnO NPs and its CMC protective coating for fresh produce throughout storage.

Electrospun polylactic acid nanofibers membrane with copper ion-loaded clay nanotubes for fresh-keeping packaging

Xiujuan Zhao,Donghong Zou,Yunfei Liu,Ye Xia,Jiahui Tao,Qin Zeng,Yu Hou,Mingxian Liu

The plastics derived from fossil fuels for food packaging results in serious environmental problems. Developing environment-friendly materials for food packaging is urgent and essential. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA) composite nanofibers membranes were prepared with good biocompatibility and antibacterial property. Cu 2+ loaded in the natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was used for the antibacterial agent. Cu 2+ was loaded in the HNTs and was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PLA nanofibers with different HNTs-Cu content were continuous nanofibers with the nanoscale range. HNTs-Cu entered into the nanofiber successfully. Thermal analysis results showed composite nanofibers had good thermal stability. Composite nanofiber membranes had the good hydrophobic property. HNTs-Cu improved the mechanical property of composite nanofibers than pure PLA nanofibers. Tensile strength and elasticity modulus of composite nanofibers with 4 % HNTs-Cu content were the most outstanding. L929 cells were cultured on the nanofiber membranes for biocompatibility evaluation. Cell viability of nanofiber membranes was above the 90 %. Cell live/dead staining results showed L929 cells was seldom dead on the nanofiber membranes. PLA/HNTs-Cu nanofiber membranes exhibited excellent antibacterial effects on S. aureus and E. coli . The inhibitory rates against S. aureus and E. coli were 98.31 % and 97.80 % respectively. The fresh-keeping effects of nanofiber membranes were evaluated by the strawberry preservation. Strawberries covered by nanofiber membranes exhibited better appearance, lower weight loss and higher firmness than control, PLA and PLA/HNTs groups. It promised that PLA/HNTs-Cu composite nanofiber membranes have the significant potential application for active food packaging.

Silk protein: A novel antifungal and edible coating for strawberry preservation

Yan Wang,Weijie Wu,Ruiling Liu,Ben Niu,Xiangjun Fang,Hangjun Chen,Mohamed A. Farag,Li-Shu Wang,Guannan Wang,Hailong Yang,Huizhi Chen,Haiyan Gao

In this study, an antimicrobial component, silk protease inhibitors (SPIs), was extracted from discarded silkworm cocoons, and a suitable degumming method for obtaining regenerated silk fibroin (SF) was screened. An edible antimicrobial coating was prepared by mixing SPIs with SF for evaluation of potential in strawberries preservation. Results demonstrated that SPI could effectively inhibit mycelial growth and spore germination. The alkaline protease method exhibited the highest degumming rate of 24.4 %. The SPI-SF coating exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high water vapor permeability, and easy washability. Within 10 days, seedlings treatment with SPI-SF coating solution showed a germination rate of 94.3 %, and exhibited good biocompatibility with HepG2 cells. Coating with SPI-SF led to increase in the storage period of strawberries to 10–14 days, concurrent with considerable reduction in decay rate at room temperature. Conclusively, this study demonstrates the potential of SPI-SF edible coating in strawberries preservation.
