Unidirectional solute transfer using a Janus membrane

Ying Dong,Jing Li,Stig Pedersen-Bjergaard,Chuixiu Huang

A membrane as a selective barrier of mass transfer is of great importance for applications in analysis, environment, energy, and biology. Unidirectional solute transfer that would improve membrane process flow is a challenge. Here, macroscopic extreme wettability of membranes controlling microscopic solute transfer is presented. A Janus membrane is prepared by integrating underoil superhydrophobic (UOSH) and underwater superoleophobic (UWSO) surfaces. Without or with electric field, solutes pass through the Janus membrane from the UOSH side to the UWSO side, but are impeded from penetrating in the reverse direction. The UWSO surface has a high affinity toward solutes in water compared to the UOSH surface at their interface. The composite membrane realizes unidirectional solute transfer, which can be considered as a solute transfer diode. This study may promote the understanding of the correlation between macroscopic and microscopic interfacial behaviors and facilitate the design of interfacial materials for controllable solute transfer and separation.

Facile fabrication of underwater superoleophobic membrane based on polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogel modified metal mesh for oil–water separation

Yang Zhang,Zheng Cao,Zili Luo,Wenjun Li,Tao Fu,Wang Qiu,Zhirong Lai,Junfeng Cheng,Haicun Yang,Wenzhong Ma,Chunlin Liu

Using chemically etched stainless steel mesh (SSM) as matrix, chitosan (CS) as the hydrophilic component and acrylamide as (AAm) monomer, the underwater superoleophobic membrane (PAAm/CS@SSM) for oil–water separation was prepared by free radical polymerization initiated by ultraviolet light. The composition, morphology, underwater oil contact angle, and structure of PAAm/CS@SSM were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The underwater oil contact angles of PAAm/CS@SSM could reach 154.5°. When the number of oil–water cycles reached 20 times, the oil–water separation efficiency of PAAm/CS@SSM was larger than 99%. When the oil–water ratio is 1:3, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, the oil–water separation flux of PAAm/CS@SSM was 2096.8, 4457.9, 4735.7, 5395.7, and 3606.9 L·m· −2 ·h −1 , respectively. When oils are n-hexane, petroleum ether, vegetable oil, and liquid paraffin, the oil–water separation efficiency of PAAm/CS@SSM was 99.0%, 97.7%, 97.2%, and 99.3%, respectively. After the wear resistance test, the PAAm/CS@SSM membrane still exhibited underwater super-oleophobicity (>150°). Graphical

Bio-inspired fabrication of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic alumina membranes for highly efficient oil/water separation

Zhou Wenjin,Zhou Mingyang,Zhang Huapeng,Tang Hongyan

Inspired by fish scales, superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic alumina membranes were fabricated in this study. Dopamine deposited on the surface of alumina membranes through immersion over time, and then crosslinking reaction occurred with polyethyleneimine (PEI), which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It induced the modified layer coated on the membrane surface. Values of water contact angle of the modified alumina membranes were ~ 0° in air. Values of underwater oil contact angle reached 155°, which indicated it was superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic. More particles engendered with the increase in the reaction time with PEI, which induced the decrease in the pore sizes and permeation flux. All values of oil rejection were higher than 98.5%. No obvious deterioration of permeation flux could be found. The rejection hardly suffered a sharp decline over 800 min. It indicates that the modified layer can firmly stick to the alumina membranes. Therefore, the as-prepared alumina membrane is promising for practical oil/water separation.

3D printed robust superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic composite membrane for high efficient oil/water separation

Xipeng Li,Huiting Shan,Wei Zhang,Baoan Li

The preparation of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane for achieving highly efficient oil/water separation through a facile method is still a great challenge. In this work, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane with an ordered porous structure is fabricated via a facile direct inkjet writing (DIW) 3D printing technology for the application of oil/water separation. To print the membrane, a solid-like solution containing cellulose acetate (CA), poly (viny1 alcohol) (PVA), and silica nano-particles (SiO 2 NPs) is used as the printed ink. As a result, the optimal 3D printed membrane exhibits a quite low water contact angles in-air about 18.14 ± 2.61° and a high underwater oil contact angle about 159.14 ± 0.59°, demonstrating its superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic characteristics. In oil/water separation process, the optimal printed membrane maintains high oil/water separation efficiency about 99.0% driven by gravity. In contrast to the traditional composite mesh preparing by coating CA/PVA/Si layer on the surface of commercial steel meshes, the printed membrane exhibits superior mechanical stability even after 30 min sonication or 100 bending cycles. Most importantly, the printed membrane still maintains good anti-fouling characteristics and high separation efficiency for separating oil/water mixture after 50 cycles.

Transparent smart surface with pH-induced wettability transition between superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity

Kunlin Chen,Jiru Jia,Yan Zhao,Kai Lv,Chaoxia Wang

Smart surface with the switchable water/oil extreme wettability by external stimuli has great research and application value. In this paper, we present transparent smart surfaces with pH-responsive water wettability in air and oil wettability in water via grafting pH-responsive block copolymers on an inverse opal film. The resulting transparent surface not only shows superhydrophobicity in air but also displays the underwater superoleophobicity after treatment with acid. This transition in wettability is reversible and can be repeated multiple times through adjusting the pH value on the surface. Moreover, this smart surface sustains its superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity after being abraded with the sand or immersed into NaCl aqueous solutions for 7   days. This transparent surface may be useful for the development of swimsuits, microfluidic valves, automotive glass and solar cells.

A CVD-Assisted Modification Approach for Preparing a Dual Superlyophobic Fabric with In-Air Superhydrophobicity and Underwater Superoleophobicity

Yihan Sun,Jinxia Huang,Zhiguang Guo

Superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity demonstrate mutual advantages in various water-related interfacial applications. However, achieving such two opposite superwetting states on a single one-fabric surface without introducing any continuous external stimulus remains a great challenge. In this work, a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) modification methodology for achieving superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity on a single one-fabric surface is presented. The CVD methodology plays a crucial role in realizing such unusual superwetting properties that can be achieved through a moderate synergetic effect from hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in surface chemistry. Driven only by gravity, the as-prepared fabric with reasonable resistance to repeatable laundering cycles and long-time corrosive liquid submersion can be further applied in high-efficiency on-demand oil–water separation.

Efficient Oil/Water Separation Membrane Derived from Super-Flexible and Superhydrophilic Core–Shell Organic/Inorganic Nanofibrous Architectures

Zhi Liu,Detao Qin,Jianghui Zhao,Quan Feng,Zhengtao Li,Hongwei Bai,Darren Delai Sun

To address the worldwide oil and water separation issue, a novel approach was inspired by natural phenomena to synthesize superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes via a scale up fabrication approach. The synthesized membranes possess a delicate organic core of PVDF-HFP and an inorganic shell of a CuO nanosheet structure, which endows super-flexible properties owing to the merits of PVDF-HFP backbones, and superhydrophilic functions contributed by the extremely rough surface of a CuO nanosheet anchored on flexible PVDF-HFP. Such an organic core and inorganic shell architecture not only functionalizes membrane performance in terms of antifouling, high flux, and low energy consumption, but also extends the lifespan by enhancing its mechanical strength and alkaline resistance to broaden its applicability. The resultant membrane exhibits good oil/water separation efficiency higher than 99.7%, as well as excellent anti-fouling properties for various oil/water mixtures. Considering the intrinsic structural innovation and its integrated advantages, this core–shell nanofibrous membrane is believed to be promising for oil/water separation, and this facile approach is also easy for scaled up manufacturing of functional organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes with insightful benefits for industrial wastewater treatment, sensors, energy production, and many other related areas. Keywords:core shell;flexible;oil water separation;superhydrophilicity;underwater superoleophobicity

Facile preparation of hybrid coating-decorated cotton cloth with superoleophobicity in air for efficient light oil/water separation

Xiuxia Zhang,Jintao Wang,Xiaohuan Wang,Ziqing Cai

Superwetting materials have attracted broad attention in oil-water separation application in the last few years. In our work, a kind of modified cotton cloth with superoleophobicity/superhydrophilicity in air is obtained by using polydopamine and nano silica powder to construct micro-nanostructure on cotton cloth and subsequent sodium perfluornonanoate decoration to reduce the surface energy. The results show that the modified cotton cloth has high contact angle (CA) to various oils, and the CAs to canola oil, flaxseed oil, corn oil, and sesame oil are 164.5°, 153°, 152.5°, 144.5°, respectively. The constructed cloth has high oil-water separation efficiency to the mixtures of corn oil, linseed oil, rapeseed oil and water. Even after 25 cycles, the efficiency is still higher than 97%. Besides, the modified cloth can resist severe friction damage and the CA to oil is still greater than 135° after 18 cycles of friction on sandpaper. Especially, the separation efficiencies to rapeseed oil in pH 2 solution, pH 12 solution, 3.5% NaCl solution, hot water, ice water are above 96%, implying the applicability of the cloth in harsh water environments.

Bioinspired superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surfaces with robust wax-prevention, self-cleaning, and oil/water separation functions

Xin Dai,Zhaozheng Song,Peng Li,Sixuan Li,Luyuan Yang,Qingzhe Jiang

Recently, much attention has been paid to underwater superoleophobic surfaces for their great potential in the industry. However, the large-scale practical utilization of the current underwater superoleophobic coatings is mainly limited by their complex and expensive fabrication processes and poor physical and chemical durability. Consequently, we fabricated a bioinspired superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic poly(vinyl alcohol)/montmorillonite composite surface by a facile, green process. This composite surface demonstrated excellent anti-wax and self-cleaning properties. The outstanding mechanical and chemical stabilities of this surface allowed it to retain its underwater superoleophobicity after 50 cycles of sandpaper abrading or prolonged immersion in corrosive solutions. Additionally, stainless steel mesh coated with this composite surface could separate various oil/water mixtures, including emulsions, driven only by gravity with an ultrahigh separation efficiency (>99.2%). Furthermore, the coated mesh achieved an extremely high separation efficiency of 98.6% and a separation flux of 37 098.6 L m−2 h−1 following 30 separation cycles. This multifunctional composite surface holds tremendous promise for large-scale practical applications.

Cubic MOF coated stainless steel mesh with underwater superoleophobicity for highly efficient oil/water separation

Wei He,Yucheng Liu,Zhi Huang,Wenwen Tu,Rui Liu,Mingyan Chen

A novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic material (MOF-5/PDA/SSM) with high flux, outstanding oil/water separation performance and durability was prepared. The stainless steel mesh (SSM) was modified by MOF-5 crystals and PDA. The introduction of MOF-5 can improve the hydrophilicity of SSM and achieve high water flux at the same time. PDA is a substance with strong adhesion which can be used as an effective bonding intermediate. The preparation strategy includes the self-polymerization of dopamine and the deposition of cubic clusters on SSM via hydrothermal reaction . The MOF-5 particles on the mesh are cubic hexahedral crystal with a uniform size diameter, which can trap water in the rough microstructure, forming a strong hydration barrier layer or composite water-solid interface on its surface, hindering the penetration of oil. The super-hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the modified meshes were introduced by pre-wetting surface. The FTIR, XRD , XPS and SEM characterizations demonstrated that the successfully growth of MOF-5 and a rough structure was obtained on the mesh. The special wetting and the robustness of the fabricated mesh led to the outstanding separation efficiency (up to 99.5%), excellent recyclability (about 20 cycles) and high water flux (53.9 k L m −2  h −1 ). The mesh also showed remarked water flux and various oil/water mixtures separation performance. Particularly, the successfully prepared materials were found to be significant stable under various physical and chemical extremes environments, including maintain UWOCA>150 under acid/alkali media, marvelous performance after 120 min of continuous separation and high anti-oil intrusion pressure. The combination of metal organic framework and stainless steel mesh may provide a candidate application to effective oil-water separation.

Anionic ammonium polyphosphate coated underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric for effective oil/water separation

Yu Qiuyu,Liang Xinyue,Rao Qing,Tu Jiang,Wang Peng,Lu Ming,Xiao Hang

Considering the great threat of oil spilling to human safety and ecological balance, treatment of oily wastewater became a worldwide challenge. Inspired by the underwater superoleophobic property of fish scale surface, we fabricated the superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric (CF) through grafting modification of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) followed by surface deposition of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles via micro-dissolution method. The incorporation of APP, which contained numerous anionic groups, was found to be advantageous in enhancing the water holding capacity of fabric. More significantly, the micro-nanoscale rough structure resulting from Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was pivotal in achieving superwetting ability towards water. The synergistic effect of hydrophilic chemical and rough structure significantly improved the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the CF. The as-prepared fabric not only exhibited applicability for separating oil/water mixture, but also demonstrated exceptional performance in the separation of emulsions with relatively high water flux. The presence of numerous anionic groups was crucial in facilitating water flux during emulsions separation by screening electrostatic repulsion. Furthermore, benefiting from the self-glue effect of micro-dissolved CF, the as-prepared fabric exhibited remarkable stability against harsh conditions such as mechanical abrasion, immersion in acid or alkali solution, high temperature and frequent laundering. In general, this study would contribute to the development of fabric-based materials for oily wastewater separation with excellent separation performance and high stability.

Facile preparation of superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic cellulose membrane with CaCO3 particles for oil/water separation

Jin Yang,Jiuyun Cui,Atian Xie,Jiangdong Dai,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

The oily wastewater has been widely concerned owing to growing industrial wastewater and marine pollution. Herein, a cellulose-based oil/water separation membrane was fabricated using a very simple alternating soaking process (ASP). First, the sodium alginate was coated on the cellulose membrane surface (filter paper), and then CaCO 3 particles were assembled onto the membrane surface through ASP, finally we can get the superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic cellulose membrane (FP@SA/CaCO 3 ) for oil/water separation. The underwater oil contact angle (OCA) of FP@SA/CaCO 3 is 151.1°, which indicated that FP@SA/CaCO 3 has good underwater superoleophobicity. Moreover, for different oil/water mixtures, the FP@SA/CaCO 3 membrane has outstanding separation efficiency of over 99.2 % and the flux of over 400 L m −2 h −1 . Besides, even after 20 reuse, FP@SA/CaCO 3 still showed a high flux and separation efficiency, indicating FP@SA/CaCO 3 has good reusability. The FP@SA/CaCO 3 membrane with low cost and high performance shows a good application market for oily wastewater remediation in the future.
