Polylactic acid (PLA) plays a crucial role in addressing global environmental concerns, particularly the challenges of achieving carbon peak and neutrality goals. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has emerged as a potential orthopedic implant material due to its excellent mechanical properties, elastic modulus similar to human bone, wear resistance, and good biocompatibility. In this study, PEEK/PLA (PEEK/PLA) composites were prepared using a film-casting method. PEEK exhibits a spherical structure and can be dispersed in the PLA matrix, demonstrating good compatibility with PLA. Additionally, PEEK acts as a heterogeneous nucleating agent, reducing the surface free energy barrier for the crystallization nucleation of PLA molecules and promoting PLA crystallization. When the PEEK content is 8%, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite material increase by 15.45% and 91.23%, respectively, compared to pure PLA. Furthermore, the introduction of the copolymer (PC x L y A) not only improves the compatibility between PLA and the blend but also successfully regulates the mechanical properties and in vitro degradation of the composite by adjusting the ratio of ε-caprolactone and L-lactide in the copolymer. This study not only delves into the modification strategies and methods for PLA composites but also provides new insights for developing biomedical materials with excellent properties.

Glass fiber/poly(ether ether ketone) (GF/PEEK) composite foams with improved compressive strength and heat resistance can be successfully prepared using a simple and environmentally friendly supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO 2 ) foaming technology. The cell morphologies of the foams can be controlled by adjusting the GF content and foaming parameters, including the saturation temperature, saturation time, saturation pressure, and depressurization rate. With a foam density of 0.55 g cm −3 , the PEEK-based composite foam having 30% GF content has a 10% compressive strength of 11.07 MPa, and its density varies negligibly up to 330.0 °C. The GF/PEEK composite foams having high GF contents show significantly better properties than those having low GF contents as a result of the supporting and strengthening effect of the GF in the PEEK cell walls. The GF/PEEK composite foams also show good corrosion resistance. As a result of these properties, the GF/PEEK composite foams are promising high-performance materials for use in extreme environments.

Here, a series of novel poly(ether ether ketone) containing sulfoalkylamine pendant groups (SNPEEK- x ) were synthesized by grafting copolymerization reaction. The chemical structure of SNPEEK- x was identified by 1 H NMR and the morphology of all films was measured by SAXS and TEM. The impedance varied for five orders of magnitude (from 10 7 to 10 2 Ω) as the relative humidity increasing from 11 to 97% RH. At the same time, all samples exhibited a fast response time of less than 3 s, outstanding repeatability and good long-term durability against high humidity. Especially, SNPEEK- x sensors displayed an extremely small humidity hysteresis in the impedance versus RH relationship during absorption and desorption processes. These essential properties of humidity sensors such as the impedance at various humidity, sensitivity, linearity and humidity hysteresis revealed that SNPEEK- x are suitable to be used as humidity sensors.

The major challenge restricting the application of 3D printed PEEK parts is the weak interlayer strength . Herein, the fluorene-based poly (ether ether ketone)s (FD-PEEK) were designed and synthesized to solve the problem. A remarkable improvement in the interlayer strength of materials was achieved. By introducing 10 mol% fluorene groups into the polymer chain (10 %-FD-PEEK), the interlayer strength of 10 %-FD-PEEK was improved to 41 MPa, which is close to that of the commercial PEEK resin for 3D printing (Victrex, AM 200). The introduction of 15 mol% fluorene groups (15 %-FD-PEEK) enabled the interlayer strength and strain at break of 400 % and 500 % higher than that of PEEK, reaching 67 MPa and 11.23 %, respectively. The improvement of the interlayer strength was attributed to the slower crystallizing rate of FD-PEEK, which was verified by the isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics . Meanwhile, the chain rigidity caused by fluorene groups and the larger spherulite generated by the slower crystallization allowed FD-PEEK to reach a similar tensile strength to PEEK in the X-axis and Y-axis directions. Achieved by slowing crystallization and introducing rigid structure into the molecular chain , the results significantly promote the engineering application of 3D printing parts and provide new insights into the performance enhancement of semi-crystalline additive manufacturing materials.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a potential bone repair material because of its stable chemical and good mechanical properties. However, the biological inertness of PEEK limits its clinical application. Sr 2+ has multi biological functions, including promoting bone formation and blood vessel regeneration and inhibiting inflammation. In this paper, PEEK was modified with Sr 2+ with the purpose to construct PEEK bone graft material with triple functions of osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and anti-inflammatory. The results showed that Sr-modified PEEK could stably release Sr 2+ for a long time in the PBS solution, and indeed could promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, promote angiogenesis, and inhibit inflammation. Therefore, it is believed that this multifunctional PEEK with Sr 2+ should show great promise for clinical applications in bone repair.

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composite is found extensive application in various industries. Efforts have been made to enhance the interfacial binding between the resin and fibers. Herein, we report a green CF surface modification suspension coating method that could resist high process temperature by optimizing the stability of the aqueous suspension, which contains PEEK resin particles and a mixture of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyethylene glycol monostearate (stPEG). The optimized suspension (PEEK: SDS mass ratio= 5:1) that can meet around 500°C process requirement was then used to improve the physical interfacial binding between CF and PEEK. Based on the suspension colloidal stability, the process was optimized by tensile tests of the CF/PEEK monofilaments. The results show that the colloidal stability of the PEEK aqueous suspension with a total solid content of 20 wt.% containing stPEG-SDS (stPEG: SDS mass ratio= 1:2) surfactant blend (PEEK: stPEG-SDS mass ratio= 5:1) reached the optimum at a stirring rate of 750 rpm. The maximum tensile strength of the CF/PEEK monofilaments reached ~4.968 GPa at a coating diameter of 8.54 μm. This PEEK aqueous suspension provides a non-toxic, environmentally friendly and high temperature resistant aqueous material to produce high-performance fiber reinforced PEEK composites.

Given its excellent biological properties and the matching of its elastic modulus with that of human bone tissue, medical polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered a desirable candidate for bone-implant materials. However, its poor osseointegrative and antibacterial properties greatly limit its clinical application. To address these concerns, a functional PEEK implant is needed. Herein, a novel photo-responsive multifunctional PEEK-based implant material (sPEEK/BP/E7) with both effective osteogenesis and good disinfection properties was constructed via the self-assembly of black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA), and bioactive short peptide E7 on sulfonated PEEK (sPEEK). The versatile micro-/nano-structured PEEK surface provides superior hydrophilicity, a favorable osteogenic microenvironment, and excellent photothermal effects under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The in vitro results showed that sPEEK/BP/E7 displays enhanced cytocompatibility and osteogenicity in terms of cell adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, matrix mineralization, and osteogenesis-related gene expression, superior to those of the sPEEK and sPEEK/BP samples. In addition to osteogenesis, the multifunctional coating exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). Furthermore, it was confirmed in a rat femoral infection model that sPEEK/BP/E7 effectively resisted infection caused by S. aureus under NIR light irradiation and promoted osseointegration in vivo . Thus, this work presents a facile strategy to realize improvement of the “functional integration” of new polymer bone-implant materials and provide new ideas for their clinical application.

The primary challenge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is the insufficient interfacial adhesion between metal and resin, which impedes the realization of the full potential. To address this issue, a two-step strategy has been proposed: firstly, via the cerium coordination-based approach, followed by grafting carbon nanotubes onto the titanium surface. This modification enhances the interfacial behavior between titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resulting in increased roughness and wettability on the titanium surface, facilitating tight contact between PEEK and titanium sheets while reducing defects at the interface. Compared to CF/PEEK-sandblasted Ti, the modified CF/PEEK-Ti composites exhibit significantly enhanced interfacial shear strength, equivalent flexural strength, and interlaminate shear strength with an increase of 205.4 % (39.4 MPa), 133.3 % (1434.3 MPa) and 95.2 % (93.7 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the failure mode has shifted from interfacial failure to cohesive failure. The interface enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effects of coordination bonding, mechanical interlocking, and multiple interactions. This facile two-step modification method demonstrates the potential to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK-Ti composites.

Superhydrophobic surfaces generally encounter substantial challenges due to their weak stability when subjected to harsh environments. Specifically, the delicate micro-nano structures present on these surfaces are susceptible to external destruction. Given the robust mechanical characteristics and chemical stability of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), ultra-stable superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces were developed using template replication and chemical modification methods, achieving a water contact angle (WCA) of 159.6 ± 1.4° and a water rolling angle (WRA) of 3.7 ± 0.6°. The stable superhydrophobicity is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of the robust arrayed micro-nano structures and the stably bonded fluorine long chains. Notably, the superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces demonstrate remarkable durability. They could maintain satisfactory superhydrophobicity even after 120 sandpaper abrasion cycles, 600 sharp steel blade scraping cycles, 10 L of water impact, 24 h of ultrasonic destruction, 52 weeks of ageing, 7 days of corrosive reagent damage, 7 days of UV irradiation, etc. Moreover, these fabricated superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces also exhibit robust antifouling and self-cleaning properties. This ultra-stable superhydrophobic PEEK surface is of significant importance for efficient antifouling of biomedical and aerospace in harsh environments.

Since thermally conductive fillers easily aggregate when introduced into polymer matrix, it is essential to apply a modifier to enhance the dispersion of the filler. In current study, the surface of boron nitride (h-BN) is firstly modified by employing a double modification process and then added into sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) to form the composite materials. Four different kinds of samples of double-modified h-BN were obtained. Ultimately, the XXX@h-BN/SPEEK (XXX denoted as modifier, i.e. PDA, VTMS, TEOS, and APS) flexible film with the horizontally oriented XXX@h-BN was produced by heating the mixture under an external electric field. The test results indicate that the thermally conductive filler PDA@h-BN (PDA: polydopamine), which was prepared by modifying OH@h-BN with PDA, loaded into SPEEK, and electrically oriented, shows the best overall performances. With a high tensile strength of 43.24 MPa and good flexibility, PDA@h-BN/SPEEK flexible film exhibits an in-plane thermal conductivity of 2.3 Wm −1 K −1 at a filling ratio of 10 wt%. The sample may be bent at a steep angle without breaking down and can recover to original shape bearing its high degree of flexibility.

Using highly sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as the base material, the structure and properties of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) membranes are optimized by precisely controlling the doping of phosphotungstic acid (HPW), dopamine (DA), and various amounts of carbon nanomaterials. Compared with conventional PEEK membranes, this optimized membrane exhibits higher proton conductivity, lower water absorption swelling rate, and excellent thermal stability. Highly SPEEK is soluble in water, thus fails to be used in fuel cell applications. Herein, we conduct Friedel-Crafts method to obtain cross-linked highly sulfonated membrane with controlled water uptake and swelling while still maintaining high proton conductivity. The polymer is then doped with phosphotungstic acid (HPW) to acquire enhanced performance. To control HPW leakage, polydopamine (PDA) acting as double-sided adhesive is incorporated within the membrane. By distributing 1 wt.% PDA, the HPW leakage is reduced almost three times. The composite C-SPEEK/HPW x /PDA y membranes have exhibited excellent overall performance. Specifically, the best proton conductivity result of C-SPEEK/HPW 50 has reached 0.271 S/cm. Moreover, it has presented superb performance in H 2 /O 2 single cell test recorded as power density of 886.13 mW/cm 2 while current density is 1614.20 mA/cm 2 at 60°C.

Weak mechanical properties and mismatching of elastic modulus to human bone restricts the use of PEEK as a bone implant material. By introducing reinforcing particles in polymers, composite material properties could be tailored to meet specific design requirements. In this work, composite materials with PEEK as a matrix and Al2O3 as reinforcing fillers were prepared by an injection molding method. Subsequently, the effects of different particle sizes (30 nm, 0.2 μm, 5 μm) and distinct contents (2.5 wt%, 5.0 wt%, 7.5 wt%, 10.0 wt%, 12.5 wt%, 15.0 wt%) of Al2O3 powder on the mechanical properties of the composites, such as tensile strength, bending strength, impact strength, Vickers hardness and modulus, were investigated by an electronic universal testing machine. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to compare the thermal properties of composites with different proportions. Besides, the cross-section fractography of the composites after the tensile strength test was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the interface bonding effect. Moreover, mouse fibroblast L929 cells were used for cytotoxicity testing of CCK-8 kit to evaluate cell compatibility of the composite in vitro and cell morphology was observed by inverted fluorescence microscopy. Based on the obtained results, Al2O3 reinforcement enhanced many properties in some aspects, which makes the Al2O3/PEEK composite one of the most promising candidates for human bone implantation, reconstruction, orthopedic and trauma applications.
