Crystalline Sb or Bi in amorphous Ti-based oxides as anode materials for sodium storage

Jun Pan,Kang Yu,Hongzhi Mao,Lili Li,Yuchen Zhang,Yanlu Li,Paulo J. Ferreira,Jian Yang

A simple synthesis has been developed for watermelon-like nanocomposites with Ti-based oxides as the matrix. Using the case of Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x as an example, in-situ/ex-situ techniques, first-principle calculations and control experiments confirm that the formation of Ti-based oxides promotes the reduction of Sb 3+ to Sb by NH 3 at an elevated temperature. A similar synthesis process also succeeds for Sb nanocrystals in amorphous TiO 2 and for Bi nanocrystals in amorphous TiPO x , confirming the promising potential of this synthesis. More importantly, the nanocomposite composed by crystalline Sb in an amorphous TiPO x matrix, as the anode material for sodium storage, concurrently exhibits a long cycle life (~1000 cycles) and a high capacity retention (~82%), suggesting the advantages of watermelon-like structures.

Porous Na2Fe(SO4)2/C: high pseudocapacitive contribution for accelerated sodium storage kinetics

Xiyue Zhang,Yingjie Zhou,Minjie Hou,Xiecheng Yang,Kun Ren,Peng Dong,Jiaqian Qin,Da Zhang,Feng Liang

To meet the urgent requirement for sustainable energy storage technologies, incorporating effective waste management into the design of energy storage materials can achieve a closed-loop supply chain from waste to energy. Herein, extrinsic pseudocapacitive (PDC) cathode materials with different carbon contents were synthesized using FeSO4·7H2O waste through a simple ball milling and annealing process, which enhances sodium storage kinetics and achieves waste recycling. The results indicate that NFSO particles and graphite flakes create a disordered porous structure, which enhances the PDC effect, thus overcoming the slow migration rate of sodium-ions. Specifically, the diffusion coefficient of NFSO/C-10 increased by around an order of magnitude compared to that of NFSO, increasing from 10−12 to 10−11. The discharge capacity reached 84 mA h g−1 at 0.2C (1C = 91 mA g−1). The present work realizes the high-value reuse of waste and highlights the crucial role of the PDC effect in enhancing diffusion dynamics, which opens up a new direction for the design and synthesis of high-rate iron-based sulfate cathode materials.

Xiaoyan Shi,Weiquan Liang,Guoping Liu,Bin Chen,Lianyi Shao,Yanxue Wu,Zhipeng Sun,Felipe García

The development of new energy-related materials is the pinnacle to attaining a sustainable society based on renewable energy. Over the past decades, plenty of electrode materials have been investigated seeking better energy storage properties. However, the often-tedious synthetic procedures and large amounts of solvents utilised during their syntheses incur high costs and severe environmental pollution. Here we present a solvent-free approach to metal–organic-frameworks/MXene-derived carbonaceous metal selenide/MXene composites with unique nanostructures rich in mesopores and macropores. These species can be readily transformed into high-performance electrode materials with enhanced Li/Na ion storage properties compared with their solution-based counterparts. Herein we report not only a unique metal–organic framework/MXene-derived electrode material displaying high-performance for advanced lithium/sodium storage applications but also its novel environmentally benign production process.

Porous Organic Polymer with Hierarchical Structure and Limited Volume Expansion for Ultrafast and Highly Durable Sodium Storage

Longhai Zhang,Rui Wang,Zixiang Liu,Jiandong Wan,Shilin Zhang,Siming Wang,Kang Hua,Xiaohao Liu,Xunzhu Zhou,Xiansheng Luo,Xiaoyang Zhang,Mengge Cao,Hongwei Kang,Chaofeng Zhang,Zaiping Guo

Sustainable organic electrode materials, as promising alternatives to conventional inorganic electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), are still challenging to realize long-lifetime and high-rate batteries because of their poor conductivity, limited electroactivity, and severe dissolution. It is also urgent to deeply reveal their electrochemical mechanism and evolution processes. A porous organic polymer (POP) with a conjugated and hierarchical structure is designed and synthesized here. The unique molecule and structure endow the POP with electron delocalization, high ionic diffusivity, plentiful active sites, exceptional structure stability, and limited solubility in electrolytes. When evaluated as an anode for SIBs, the POP exhibits appealing electrochemical properties regarding reversible capacity, rate behaviors, and long-duration life. Importantly, using judiciously combined experiments and theoretical computation, including in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ex situ spectroscopy, we reveal the Na-storage mechanism and dynamic evolution processes of the POP, including 12-electron reaction process with Na, low volume expansion (125–106% vs the initial 100%), and stable composition and structure evolution during repeating sodiation/de-sodiation processes. This quantitative design for ultrafast and highly durable sodium storage in the POP could be of immediate benefit for the rational design of organic electrode materials with ideal electrochemical properties.

Few-layered ReS2 nanosheets vertically aligned on reduced graphene oxide for superior lithium and sodium storage

Sheng Liu,Yan Liu,Wanwan Lei,Xin Zhou,Kang Xu,Qiquan Qiao,Wen-Hua Zhang

We have exploited an efficient electrostatic attraction strategy to fabricate hybrid 2D–2D heterostructures consisting of few-layered ReS2 nanosheets chemically anchored on both sides of reduced graphene oxide in vertical orientation (v-ReS2/rGO) via a one-pot hydrothermal approach. The additive hydroxylamine hydrochloride plays a critical role in reversing the negatively charged pristine rGO to positively charged rGO, which favors the electrostatic attraction of ReO4− and facilitates the subsequent growth of the few-layered ReS2 nanosheets perpendicular to the rGO substrates, where ReS2 nanosheets present a thickness of ∼3.7 nm and a height of ∼50 nm relative to the rGO scaffold. Due to the synergistic effects of the elegant 2D–2D nano-hierarchy created on graphene, the resulting v-ReS2/rGO nanocomposite exhibits reversible lithium and sodium storage with excellent specific capacity and rate capability at low potentials, making such 2D–2D materials promising candidates as anode hosts in alkali ion batteries.

Box-shaped necklace-like Fe3O4/MoS2-CNFs composite nanofibers with confinement effect enhancing sodium storage performance

Huayu Wu,Mohan Yue,Lin He,Miao Zhang,Yimin Huang,Chang Sun,Yu Liu,Jindi Wang,Rongguan Lv,Rong Xing

A nanofiber necklace with a box-shaped structure has been designed. The box-shaped template can introduce other transition metal compounds, effectively compensating for the intrinsic defects of electrode materials. α-Fe 2 O 3 nano cubes as the template mix with PAN to get α-Fe 2 O 3 /PAN. And then the α-Fe 2 O 3 nano cubes calcine to form Fe 3 O 4 with more valence state under high temperature, which get the box-shape necklace-like structure Fe 3 O 4 -CNFs. The confined space has formed by high concentrated HCl etching, the box-shaped necklace-like Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 carbon nanofibers (BN Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 -CNFs) anode material is obtained by hydrothermal method of confining growth of MoS 2 nanosheets. The mixed valence state of Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ) can effectively improve the conductivity of MoS 2 nanosheets. The box-shape necklace structure constructed by α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocube has mesoporous structure and confined space, which can alleviate the volume effect of electrode material. When the electrode material is applied to the SIBs, the reversible capacity is 354 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 A/g, and the specific capacity of 131.5 mA h g −1 can be maintained at 8 A/g. On the one hand, the heterogeneous structure in the confined space alleviates the volume effect of the material, thereby improving the long cycle performance, on the other hand, it effectively enhances the electrical conductivity and increases more lithium/sodium storage sites.

Transition metal vacancy and position engineering enables reversible anionic redox reaction for sodium storage

Cai Congcong,Li Xinyuan,Li Jiantao,Yu Ruohan,Hu Ping,Zhu Ting,Li Tianyi,Lee Sungsik,Xu Nuo,Fan Hao,Wu Jinsong,Zhou Liang,Mai Liqiang,Amine Khalil

Triggering the anionic redox reaction is an effective approach to boost the capacity of layered transition metal (TM) oxides. However, the irreversible oxygen release and structural deterioration at high voltage remain conundrums. Herein, a strategy for Mg ion and vacancy dual doping with partial TM ions pinned in the Na layers is developed to improve both the reversibility of anionic redox reaction and structural stability of layered oxides. Both the Mg ions and vacancies (□) are contained in the TM layers, while partial Mn ions (~1.1%) occupy the Na-sites. The introduced Mg ions combined with vacancies not only create abundant nonbonding O 2 p orbitals in favor of high oxygen redox capacity, but also suppress the voltage decay originated from Na–O–□ configuration. The Mn ions pinned in the Na layers act as “rivets” to restrain the slab gliding at extreme de-sodiated state and thereby inhibit the generation of cracks. The positive electrode, Na 0.67 Mn 0.011 [Mg 0.1 □ 0.07 Mn 0.83 ]O 2 , delivers an enhanced discharge capacity and decent cyclability. This study provides insights into the construction of stable layered oxide positive electrode with highly reversible anionic redox reaction for sodium storage.

In situ FeF3 coating on FeNCN to stabilize discharged products Fe0 for enhanced loading and high-rate Na storage performance

Jiayin Li,Wen Wen,Shuzhuo Bai,Jing Zhang,Chenyu Wu,Jintao Wu,QingQing Huang,Yalin Zhang,Chunyi Cai,Liyun Cao,Yijun Liu,Haibo Zhang,Hua Tan,Jianfeng Huang

The instability of the interfacial structure during the synthesis of iron carbodiimide (FeNCN) leads to a decline in its electrochemical performance during cycling. By depositing FeF 3 particles on the surface of FeNCN, the in-situ transformation of this FeF 3 nanolayer into a FeF 2 nanolayer effectively utilizes the discharge product Fe 0 . This process constructs a mechanically stable sandwich-structured SEI film, thereby enhancing the stability of the FeNCN electrode interface. Consequently, the FeNCN electrode exhibits a capacity of 350.54 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , with a capacity retention rate of 99.54 %. This strategy provides crucial theoretical and technical insights for regulating carbodiimide-based materials to achieve stable, long-cycle performance in electrode materials.

Confining Co1.11Te2 nanoparticles within mesoporous hollow carbon combination sphere for fast and ultralong sodium storage

Zhouyu Huang,Yongfeng Yuan,Zhujun Yao,Mingzhen Xiu,Yong Wang,Yizhong Huang,Shaoyi Guo,Weiwei Yan

Co 1.11 Te 2 nanoparticles are in-situ uniformly grown within mesoporous hollow carbon combination sphere (MHCCS@Co 1.11 Te 2 ) using a hard-template and spray drying process, solution impregnation and pyrolysis tellurization. Material characterizations reveal that Co 1.11 Te 2 , with a diameter of ∼ 20 nm, is attached to the internal walls of the unit spheres or embedded in the mesopore shells of the unit spheres, presenting a distinctive “ships-in-combination-bottles” nanoencapsulation structure. In sodium-ion half-cells, MHCCS@Co 1.11 Te 2 exhibits excellent cycling stability, achieving reversible capacities of 257 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g after 250 cycles, 235 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g after 300 cycles and 161 mAh/g at 10.0 A/g after 1900 cycles. Electrochemical kinetic analyses and ex-situ characterizations reveal rapid electron/Na + transport kinetics, prominent surface pseudocapacitive behavior, robust nanocomposite structure, and multi-step conversion reactions of sodium polytellurides. In sodium-ion full-cells, MHCCS@Co 1.11 Te 2 still demonstrates stable cycling performance at 1.0 and 5.0 A/g and excellent rate capability. The superior electrochemical performance is associated with the nanoencapsulation structure based on mesoporous hollow carbon combination spheres, which promotes electron conduction and Na + transport. The space-confined effect maintains the high electrochemical activity and cycling stability of Co 1.11 Te 2 .

Carbon nanofibers confined polyoxometalate derivatives as flexible self-supporting electrodes for robust sodium storage

Huixia Chao,Xiangsheng Luo,Ximing Yan,Shaobin Wang,Jinqiang Zhang

Flexible self-supporting film electrodes, which eliminate the need for additional adhesive, conductive agents, or current collectors, offer significant advantages in terms of mechanical properties, specific capacity, and energy density for energy storage applications. In this study, we successfully developed a flexible film electrode by incorporating derivatives of Mo and Fe-based polyoxometalates (POMs-D) into carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The integration of CNFs significantly enhanced the structural stability of POMs-D, while the internally formed electrical field facilitated efficient electron transfer, resulting in good performance in sodium storage. The film electrode demonstrated a high capacitive contribution of 90.0 % for sodium uptake/release at a scan rate of 1.0 mV s −1 . It maintained a capacity of approximately 170 mA h g −1 even after 8000 cycles at a current density of 3.0 A g −1 . Moreover, the film electrode exhibited a decent capacity with a 40.0-fold increase in current density, along with high power capability and energy density in sodium-ion hybrid supercapacitors, showcasing the versatility. These findings unveil the structure-functionality relationship and offer an advanced approach for developing high-performance film electrode materials, opening new possibilities in the fields of material science and energy storage.

Constructing High-Content Sb Atomic Clusters and Robust Sb─O─C Bond in Sb/C Composites for Ultrahigh Rate and Long-Term Sodium Storage

Anding Xu,Mianying Huang,Chenxi Liu,Teng Li,Xue Li,Songping Wu,Zhiguang Xu,Yurong Yan

Constructing Sb atomic clusters with obvious size effect in Sb/C composites has great potential for boosting electrochemical reactivity toward ultrahigh rate and long-term sodium storage. However, how to balance the contradiction between ultra-small size of Sb atomic clusters and high loading in a specific Sb/C composite is an unprecedented challenge. Here, a facile in situ vaporization-reduction strategy is presented for preparing Sb atomic clusters@N, S co-doped carbon networks (Sb ACs@NSC). Featuring the high content of Sb atomic clusters (45.30 wt%, ICP) with superior electrochemical activity, robust Sb─O─C bond and N, S co-doped conductive carbon matrix, the Sb ACs@NSC electrode possessed ultrafast electrochemical kinetics and impressive long-term cycling stability for providing unprecedented rate capability of 245.7 mAh g −1 at ultrahigh rate of 80 A g −1 and maintaining highlighted capacity of 306.7 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles under 10 A g −1 , outperforming all reported Sb-based materials for SIBs. The DFT calculations further revealed that the Sb─O─C bond and N, S co-doped carbon matrix are beneficial for stable adsorption capabilities and fast electrochemical kinetics of Na + . The designing compromised dense Sb atomic clusters and powerful interface bond will light on developing advanced atomic materials for energy storage and conversion.

Kehan Zhou,Yue Han,Dongmei Tang,Huayu Wu,Xiaoyu Wu,Guowang Diao,Haibo Li,Ming Chen

A hybrid nanostructure with Co 0.85 Se nanoparticles anchored in nitrogen-doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres/carbon nanotubes (Co 0.85 Se/N-HMCNs/CNTs) is elaborately fabricated by a pyrolysis–reduction–selenization strategy derived from yolk–shell zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)@HMCNs, which are synthesized by the confined growth of ZIF-67 inside HMCNs regarded as nanoreactors. Benefitting from the robust hollow carbon frameworks made of nitrogen-doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres, carbon nanotubes, and highly active Co 0.85 Se ultrafine nanoparticles, the as-prepared nanocomposites show greatly enhanced lithium/sodium storage properties. When the Co 0.85 Se/N-HMCNs/CNTs are applied to lithium-ion batteries as anode materials, the advanced nanocomposite delivers excellent cycling stability (286 and 153 mA h g −1 at 10 A g −1 after 5000 and 10 000 cycles) and high rate performance (501 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 ). When the Co 0.85 Se/N-HMCNs/CNTs are applied to sodium-ion batteries as anode materials, the material realizes better cycling performance (102 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles) and excellent rate performance (132 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 ).
