The development of self-standing and binder-free O2 electrodes is significant for enhancing the total specific energy density and suppressing parasitic reactions for Li–O2 batteries, which is still a formidable challenge thus far. Here, a three-dimensional foam-like composite composed of Mo2C nanorods decorated by different amounts of N-doped carbon (Mo2C-NR@xNC (x = 5, 11, and 16 wt %)) was directly employed as the O2 electrode without applications of any binders and current collectors. Mo2C-NR@xNC presents a network microstructure with interconnected macropore and mesoporous channels, which is beneficial to achieving fast Li+ migration and O2 diffusion, facilitating the electrolyte impregnation, and providing enough space for Li2O2 storage. Additionally, the coated N-doped carbon layer can largely improve the electrochemical stability and conductivity of Mo2C. The cell with Mo2C-NR@11NC shows a considerable cyclability of 200 cycles with an overpotential of 0.28 V in the first cycle at a constant current density of 100 mA g–1, a superior reversibility associated with the formation and decomposition of Li2O2 as desired, and a high electrochemical stability. On the basis of the experimental results, the electrochemical mechanism for the cell using Mo2C-NR@11NC is proposed. These results represent a promising process in the development of a self-standing and binder-free foam-based electrode for Li–O2 batteries.

In this study, a phenolic antioxidant of 2,6-di- tert -butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT) is applied in Li-O 2 batteries to simultaneously improve discharge capacity and reduce charge overpotential. BHT exhibits a redox couple at ~ 3.0 V (vs. Li + /Li), which is extremely close to the thermodynamic potential of a Li-O 2 battery (2.96 V). The unique chemical and electrochemical behaviors of BHT contribute to the improvement on both oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction performances. These factors lead to the notable enhancement of discharge capacity (capacity increases by 72%) and the reduction of charge plateau (the plateau is 3.2 V and 4.2 V, respectively, with and without BHT) for Li-O 2 batteries. Furthermore, in-situ X-ray diffraction results confirm that the BHT-mediated formation and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 , rather than parasitic reactions, dominate the discharge and charge processes. The results provide a new approach for exploiting appropriate soluble mediators for rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries.

Introducing light energy into the charging/discharging process is an effective strategy to reduce the overpotential of Li−O 2 battery, which leads that the battery has higher energy conversion efficiency and better battery performance. However, the development has been hampered by the lack of suitable photocatalysts and cathode structure to accommodate the insoluble Li 2 O 2 . In order to overcome the aforementioned difficulties, a bifunctional photocatalyst α-Fe 2 O 3 /SnO 2 (FS) heterojunction was designed as the cathode to improve the charging/discharging overpotentials simultaneously. The photogenerated electrons and holes from FS participated in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen revolution reaction (OER) under illumination, giving rise to an ultra-low charging/discharging overpotential of 0.01 V (energy efficiency up to 99.7%), which improved the electrochemical reaction kinetics of the Li−O 2 battery strikingly. In addition, the FS cathode exhibited excellent cycle stability under light (the battery energy efficiency can still maintain 80% after 252 cycles). The bifunctional catalyst designed in this paper has profoundly proved that the band engineering strategy can effectively utilize solar energy and provide important insights for understanding the mechanism of photo-assisted Li−O 2 battery.

Redox mediators (RMs) are reported to effectually encourage the inactive decomposition of discharge products in lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs); however, oxidized RMs and other injurious species still attack the Li anodes. An ionic liquid (IL)-modified PVDF single-lithium-ion conducting composite membrane that can permit Li + only but blocks anions and other molecules is prepared. The PVDF is combined with the strong-acid cation styrene exchange resin with cation exchange characteristics to make a heterogeneous composite single-ionic conductor membrane and the IL modification causes the formation of a more-dense groove inside the PVDF membrane apparently strengthening the conductivity of the membrane without losing its impermeability to cations and discharge intermediates. The utility of the modified composite PVDF (MCP) separator greatly extends the cycle life of the LOB from 66 to 347 cycles at 1000 mAg −1 and 1000 mAhg −1 compared to cells using glass fiber separators. Rate performance is significantly enhanced at 3000 and 5000 mAg −1 , increasing from 33 and 21 cycles to 171 and 137 cycles. The full discharge capacity also expands from 3702 to 51 205 mAhg −1 . The MCP separator enables iodide-assisted cathode processes and improves lithium anode stripping/plating, which is essential to improve the performance of nonelectrolytic LOBs.

Catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances are crucial to the development of lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), which aim to promote Li2O2 deposition and decomposition and then avoid the active site passivation. Considering the metallic Ag possessing good electrical conductivity and excellent catalytic activity and perovskite oxides exhibiting high abundance, an easily tunable structure, and excellent intrinsically catalytic activity, we adopt the ultraviolet light to realize the deposition of Ag nanoparticles on the La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.9Mn0.1O3 (LSFM) substrate as a high-performance cathode for LOBs. The results confirm that the synergetic effect of Ag nanoparticle decoration and the La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.9Mn0.1O3 substrate could dramatically improve the electronic conductivity and ORR/OER kinetics of the nanohybrids. Ag@LSFM hybrids with abundant active sites and considerable electronic conductivity promote the deposition of a thinner discharge product film, and the corresponding LOBs deliver high discharge capacity (12 477 mAh g–1), a small gap between charge and discharge potentials (∼1.3 V), and high cycling stability (147 cycles). Overall, the study suggests that such a bifunctional catalyst is a promising candidate in LOBs.

Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) cells are receiving intense interest because of their extremely high energy density. A highly efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key factor influencing the performance of lithium–oxygen cells. In this work, we prepared a highly efficient CeO2-decorated δ-MnO2 (CeO2/δ-MnO2) catalyst which is composed of graphene-like δ-MnO2 with ultrafine CeO2 nanocrystals decorated on it. Li–O2 cells with the CeO2/δ-MnO2 catalyst exhibit superior electrochemical performance, including high discharge specific capacity (8260 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1), good rate capability (735 mA h g−1 at 1600 mA g−1), and excellent cycling stability (296 cycles at a limited capacity of 500 mA h g−1), which is much better than that with a bare δ-MnO2 catalyst. The achievement of excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the highly efficient co-catalytic ability of δ-MnO2 and CeO2 and the desirable graphene-like architecture of the CeO2/δ-MnO2 catalyst, as well as the formation of the thin-layered discharge product Li2O2.

Nonaqueous Li − O 2 battery (LOB) is considered one of the most promising energy storage system due to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity (3500 Wh kg −1 ). Introducing vacancies in CoMn 2 O 4 catalysts is regarded as an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performances of LOB. However, the relation between vacancy types in CoMn 2 O 4 and catalytic performances in the LOB remains ambiguous. Herein, ordered porous CoMn 2 O 4 with oxygen and metal vacancies is obtained via solvothermal reaction followed by temperature-controlled calcination using polystyrene spheres as templates. The increase in treatment temperature reduces the content of oxygen vacancies while increasing that of the metal vacancies. Notably, experimental results and theoretical calculations show that oxygen vacancies in CoMn 2 O 4 have a greater influence than metal vacancies in modulating the LiO 2 adsorption during the reaction processes and reducing the overpotential. CoMn 2 O 4 synthesized at 500 ℃ (CoMnO-500) with higher oxygen vacancies exhibits stronger adsorption onto the LiO 2 , facilitating the formation of film-like Li 2 O 2 . Therefore, an LOB with the CoMnO-500 catalyst presents the lowest overpotential of 1.2 V and longest cycle lifespan of 286 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . This study offers insights into the effect of CoMn 2 O 4 vacancies on the formation pathway of Li 2 O 2 discharge products.

In lithium–oxygen (Li–O 2 ) batteries, catalytic conversion of lithium superoxide (LiO 2 ) is a critical step to enhance kinetics. However, it is challenging for catalysts to be both highly efficient in the charging and discharging processes owing to the varying electrochemical environments. Here, we have achieved the desirable catalysis for the bidirectional electrode process by intelligently tuning the electronic structure of platinum/vanadium oxide (Pt/VO x ). Due to changes in the internal electric field, the structure of Pt/VO x dynamically evolves during cycling (Pt/V 2 O 3 or Pt/V 2 O 5 ). The different redox states of the VO x can dynamically tune the electron density of Pt due to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), resulting in desirable adsorption behavior for LiO 2 in the bidirectional electrode process. Consequently, Li–O 2 batteries with Pt/VO x electrodes show ultra-low charge overpotential (0.14 V) and higher capacity (13,270 mAh g −1 ), indicating the great potential of catalyst reconstruction for high-performance Li–O 2 batteries.

Challenges associated with the cathode material of Lithium–oxygen (Li–O 2 ) battery, particularly the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction, as well as the accumulation of discharge product Li 2 O 2 , have hindered its further advancement. Here, an in-situ synthesis strategy was adopted to load a bimetallic Ni–Co metal–organic framework (Ni/Co-MOF) onto MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) layers. Subsequently, a free-standing and flexible Ni/Co-MOF@Ti 3 C 2 hybrid membrane is prepared via a layer-by-layer self-assembly method, specifically designed for efficient ORR and as a cathode for Li–O 2 batteries. The Ni/Co-MOF@Ti 3 C 2 hybrid membrane integrates the high conductivity, unique two-dimensional layered structure, and excellent mechanical properties of Ti 3 C 2 with the bimetallic active sites of Ni/Co-MOF, exhibiting remarkable ORR catalytic activity in an O 2 -saturated 1 M LiTFSI electrolyte. The structural characteristics of the hybrid membrane provide smoother expansion pathways for Li + and O 2 , effectively promoting the deposition and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 . This not only enhances the electrochemical performance of the Li–O 2 battery but also overcomes the inherent limitations of traditional slurry-based cathode preparation methods. Experimental results demonstrate that Li–O 2 batteries utilizing the Ni/Co-MOF@Ti 3 C 2 hybrid membrane as the cathode achieve an ultra-high capacity of 36,125 mAh/g at a current density of 1000 mA/g, while exhibiting excellent cycle stability (271 cycles with a limited capacity of 1000 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g) and outstanding rate performance. The hybrid membrane’s capacity and cycle performance can be further optimized by controlling its thickness. These promising results offer novel insights into the innovative design of air cathodes for metal–air batteries, and the proposed method provides a new route for the manufacture of high-performance battery cathodes.

High-entropy catalysts featuring exceptional properties are, in no doubt, playing an increasingly significant role in aprotic lithium-oxygen batteries. Despite extensive effort devoted to tracing the origin of their unparalleled performance, the relationships between multiple active sites and reaction intermediates are still obscure. Here, enlightened by theoretical screening, we tailor a high-entropy perovskite fluoride (KCoMnNiMgZnF 3 -HEC) with various active sites to overcome the limitations of conventional catalysts in redox process. The entropy effect modulates the d -band center and d orbital occupancy of active centers, which optimizes the d – p hybridization between catalytic sites and key intermediates, enabling a moderate adsorption of LiO 2 and thus reinforcing the reaction kinetics. As a result, the Li–O 2 battery with KCoMnNiMgZnF 3 -HEC catalyst delivers a minimal discharge/charge polarization and long-term cycle stability, preceding majority of traditional catalysts reported. These encouraging results provide inspiring insights into the electron manipulation and d orbital structure optimization for advanced electrocatalyst.

The major challenges for Li-O 2 batteries are sluggish reaction kinetics and large overpotentials due to the cathode passivation resulting from insulative and insoluble Li 2 O 2 . Here, a novel nanodot (ND)-modified electrolyte is designed by employing cobalt bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Co(TFSI) 2 ) as an electrolyte additive. The Co(TFSI) 2 additive can react with discharge intermediate LiO 2 and product Li 2 O 2 to form CoO NDs. The generated CoO NDs are well dispersed in electrolyte, which integrates both the high catalytic activity of solid catalyst and the good wettability of soluble catalyst. Under the catalytis of CoO NDs, Li 2 O 2 is produced and deposits on the cathode together with them. At the recharge process, these well dispersed CoO NDs help to decompose solid Li 2 O 2 at a lower overpotential. The Li-O 2 cells with Co(TFSI) 2 exhibit a long cycle life of 200 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 under a cutoff capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 , as well as a superior reversibility associated with the Li 2 O 2 formation and decomposition. The study is expected to broaden the range of electrolyte additives and provide a new view to developing highly dispersed NDs-based catalysts for Li-O 2 batteries.

Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries are considered an important candidate for the next generation of energy storage systems due to their ultra-high theoretical energy density (11 586 mA h g−1), but their slow kinetic reactions, high overpotential and cyclic instability seriously limit their practical applications. In this study, sulfur modified Mo2C (S@Mo2C) cathode materials were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis by sulfur (S) doping to optimize the electronic structure and catalytic activity of Mo2C (Mo2C). Experiments show that S@Mo2C exhibits significantly improved electrochemical performance compared to commercial Mo2C: its specific capacity is up to 3955 mA h g−1 (commercial material only 508 mA h g−1), the charge and discharge overpotential is reduced to 0.26 V (53.6%), and the capacity retention rate remains 77.8% after 250 cycles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the introduction of sulfur induced the formation of a heterostructure of MoS2/MoS3 in the Mo2C lattice, which enhanced the conductivity and oxygen reduction/precipitation (ORR/OER) activity of the material. In addition, sulfur doping promotes the formation of highly conductive amorphous Li2O2 and effectively inhibits the accumulation of insulating ring Li2O2, thus significantly improving the cycle stability and energy efficiency of the battery. This study provides a new structural regulation strategy for the design of high efficiency lithium oxygen battery catalysts.
