Electrochemical investigation of electrochromic devices based on NiO and WO3 films using different lithium salts electrolytes

Youxiu Wei,Mu Chen,Weiming Liu,Lei Li,Yue Yan

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) with different liquid electrolytes were fabricated using NiO film as counter electrode, WO 3 film as working electrode. The effect of liquid electrolytes containing different lithium salts (LiClO 4 , LiPF 6 , LiTFSI) on films and ECDs was investigated, such as transmittance change, charge density, memory effect and cyclic stability. Films or ECDs using LiPF 6 electrolyte have excellent electrochromic properties but low cyclic stability, compared with LiClO 4 and LiTFSI electrolytes. In order to deeply understand the effect of electrolyte on films and devices, the voltage distribution of films based on an analog cell and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were measured and analyzed in different lithium salts electrolytes. Results show that voltage distribution and EIS characteristics of films have obvious difference in liquid LiClO 4 , LiPF 6 and LiTFSI electrolytes. Voltage distribution on NiO and WO 3 films is unbalanced and the impedance of films in bleached and colored states is different in the same electrolyte.

Self-Healable and Remoldable Transparent Polyurethane Film with High Dielectric Constant from the Synergistic Effect between Lithium Salt and Ionic Liquid

Danyi Li,Li Yuan,Guozheng Liang,Aijuan Gu

The rapid development of new-generation flexible touch display panels puts forward more requirements on the overlays, not only including colorlessness and transparency but also having self-healing and remolding abilities as well as high dielectric constant. Herein, new self-healable and remoldable polyurethane films (PULEx) with high dielectric constant have been developed through building of reversible cross-linked networks with special synergistic effect between lithium salt and ionic liquid. The integrated performance of PULEx was systematically investigated. Results show that as the loadings of lithium salt and ionic salt increase, films show increased dielectric constant and self-healing ability. The film with suitable composition (PULE7.5) has the best comprehensive performance; its dielectric constants (104–106 Hz) range from 9.6 to 6.1, which are comparable to those of glass (commonly used overlay for rigid capacitive touchscreen panels). The construction of reversible covalent cross-linking endows PULE7.5 with good mechanical strength, high self-healing efficiency after complete fracture (92.7%), and high recovery of mechanical properties after remolding (91.8%). In addition, the colorless PULE7.5 has high transparency (90.7% transmittance at 550 nm) and can freely convert among three shapes of bending, scrolling, and S-shape, showing great prospects in fabricating flexible display devices. The mechanism behind these outstanding integrated performances of PULE films is investigated through correlation with structures.

Anion Intercalation into a Graphite Electrode from Trimethyl Phosphate

Lei Zhang,Hongyu Wang

Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) is a flame-retardant solvent frequently used in nonaqueous electric energy storage devices. Anions can hardly intercalate into a graphite positive electrode from neat TMP at ordinary conditions. In TMP solutions, dissolving lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (LiTFSI), by means of increasing lithium salt concentration or increasing the charge cutoff voltage of Li/graphite cells, the TMP-solvated anions can successfully intercalate into graphite positive electrodes. Moreover, the effect of TFSI– activation on a graphite electrode is addressed. Ex situ X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with traditional electrochemical tests are employed to investigate the crystal structure change and electrochemical performance of graphite electrodes, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy are employed to characterize the TMP solutions.

Active Mechanism of the Interphase Film-Forming Process for an Electrolyte Based on a Sulfolane Solvent and a Chelato-Borate Complex

Chunlei Li,Peng Wang,Shiyou Li,Dongni Zhao,Qiuping Zhao,Haining Liu,Xiaoling Cui

Electrolytes based on sulfolane (SL) solvents and lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) chelato-borate complexes have been reported many times for use in advanced lithium-ion batteries due to their many advantages. This study aims to clarify the active mechanism of the interphase film-forming process to optimize the properties of these batteries by experimental analysis and theoretical calculations. The results indicate that the self-repairing film-forming process during the first cycle is divided into three stages: the initial film formation with an electric field force of ∼1.80 V, the further growth of the preformation solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film at ∼1.73 V, and the final formation of a complete SEI film at a potential below 0.7 V. Additionally, we can deduce that the decomposition of LiBOB and SL occurs throughout nearly the entire process of the formation of the SEI film. The decomposition product of BOB– anions tends to form films with an irregular structure, whereas the decomposition product of SL is in favor of the formation of a uniform SEI film.

Fabrication of polymer electrolyte via lithium salt-induced surface-initiated radical polymerization for lithium metal batteries

Yong Zhang,Liping Yu,Jirong Wang,Shaoqiao Li,Huihui Gan,Zhigang Xue

The fabrication of flexible polymer electrolytes (PEs) which possess simultaneously high thermal stability, robust mechanical strength , and high ionic conductivity is very challenging for lithium (Li) batteries. Herein, cellulose-based PE is fabricated via a Li salt-induced surface-initiated radical polymerization of polyethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (PEGA). The polymerization of PEGA is catalyzed by various Li salts, such as Li perchlorate (LiClO 4 ), bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide Li (LiTFSI), Li difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB), and LiClO 4 /LiDFOB, which also serve as charge transfer carriers in PEs. The Li salt can be used as the catalyst to promote the cleavage of C–Br bond on the surface of Br-modified cellulose, and then initiate the polymerization of PEGA. The PE obtained from the dual salt (LiClO 4 /LiDFOB)-induced radical polymerization system exhibits high ionic conductivity of 3.5 × 10 −5  S cm −1 at 30 °C, good thermal stability (up to 240 °C), and wide electrochemical stability window (5.0 V vs. Li/Li + ). Moreover, Li/PE/Li symmetric cells show good interfacial stability between PE and Li foil and the assembled Li/PE/LiFePO 4 cells possess 150 mA h g −1 at 0.1C. Li salt-induced surface-initiated polymerization provides a simple and efficient method for fabricating PE for high-performance Li metal batteries (LMBs).

Application-driven design of non-aqueous electrolyte solutions through quantification of interfacial reactions in lithium metal batteries

Wang Hansen,Yan Xiaolin,Zhang Rupeng,Sun Juanjuan,Feng Fuxiang,Li Haoran,Liang Jinding,Wang Yuchun,Ye Guangzhou,Luo Xiaonan,Huang Shengyuan,Wan Pan,Hung Samantha T.,Ye Fangjun,Chen Fangyun,Wu Erxiao,Zhou Jinfei,Ulissi Ulderico,Ge Xiaoming,Liu Chengyong,Xu Bo,Liu Na,Ouyang Chuying

Unwanted side reactions occurring at electrode|electrolyte interfaces significantly impact the cycling life of lithium metal batteries. However, a comprehensive view that rationalizes these interfacial reactions and assesses them both qualitatively and quantitatively is not yet established. Here, by combining multiple analytical techniques, we systematically investigate the interfacial reactions in lithium metal batteries containing ether-based non-aqueous electrolyte solutions. We quantitatively monitor various nanoscale-driven processes such as the reduction and oxidation pathways of lithium salt and organic solvents, the formation of various solid-electrolyte interphase species, the gas generation within the cell and the cross-talk processes between the electrodes. We demonstrate that the consumption of lithium ions owing to the continuous decomposition of the lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt, which dominates the interfacial reactions, results in ion depletion during the cell discharge and battery failure. On the basis of these findings, we propose an electrolyte formulation in which lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide content is maximized without compromising dynamic viscosity and bulk ionic conductivity, aiming for long-cycling battery performance. Following this strategy, we assemble and test Li (20 μm thickness)||LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0. 1 O 2 (17.1 mg cm − 2 of active material) single-layer stack pouch cells in lean electrolyte conditions (that is, 2.1 g Ah −1 ), which can effectively sustain 483 charge (0.2 C or 28 mA)/discharge (1 C or 140 mA) cycles at 25 °C demonstrating a discharge capacity retention of about 77%.

Constructing the lithium polymeric salt interfacial phase in composite solid-state electrolytes for enhancing cycle performance of lithium metal batteries

Rong-Ao Tong,Hanlin Luo,Linhui Chen,Jingxi Zhang,Gang Shao,Hailong Wang,Chang-An Wang

The solid-state lithium metal batteries are considered a promising direction for developing lithium-based energy storage devices because of their superiority over lithium-ion batteries containing liquid electrolytes in energy density and safety performance. However, the design, preparation, and optimization of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), especially composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs), still face critical construction design and composite process challenges. This work proposes and designs a method to construct a highly compatible and lithium-ion conductive interfacial phase by coating the inorganic phase with polymeric lithium salt in the composite solid electrolytes. The introduction of the lithium salt interfacial phase efficiently improves the cycle performance and stability of CSEs in lithium metal batteries by synergistic optimization of the composite interfacial phase. We investigate two different modification methods (solvent-free and in-situ methods) in two different inorganic systems (Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) and LiTa 2 PO 8 (LTPO)) to demonstrate the practical value of this design. The highest ionic conductivity of the modified PEO/LTPO CSEs (50 wt%) can be improved to 9.3 × 10 -4 S·cm −1 at 80℃ and 4.0 × 10 -5 at RT (∼25℃, hereinafter inclusive), while those of the modified PEO/LLZTO CSEs can reach 1.4 × 10 -3 S·cm −1 at 80℃ and 5.5 × 10 -5 at RT. The results demonstrate that the interfacial phase also enhances the electrochemical and cycle stability of CSEs.

New insight into the dual-dissociation effect of POSS fillers with suitable aperture for solid-state polymer electrolytes

Zhijie Zhang,Lin Gou,Changjiang Zhao,Tian Zhang,Huan Li,Kongying Zhu,Xingjiang Liu,Qiang Xu

The dissociation degree of lithium electrolyte salts greatly affects the performance of solid-state polymer electrolytes (SSPE) in solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLBs). The previous synthetic tactics are generally based on single dissociation of electrolyte salt, for example, solely tethering the anions or capturing lithium cations. Herein, we present a dual-dissociation strategy to synthesize SSPE by simultaneously dissociate both the anions and cations among electrolyte salts. This is achieved by integrating the oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) nanoparticles with suitable aperture in a poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) gel matrix, where the POSS filler with suitable aperture interacts with both the TFSI anions and Li + cations of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. However, the Li + cations are movable under an external electric field and can migrate between cathode and anode to achieve charge transportations. The room temperature ionic conductivity of SSPE filled with POSS nanoparticles was found to be superior to that of SSPE with SiO 2 fillers, with a conductivity value of 2.04 × 10 −4  S cm −1 and a higher Li + ion transfer number of 0.71. This improvement is attributed to the utilization of a dual-dissociation strategy of lithium salt . The theoretical computations with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) manifest that the efficient dissociation of electrolyte salt is ascribed to the coordination effect of Li + ions with four oxygen atoms among POSS cage as well as the tethering function of POSS filler for TFSI − anions. This work provides an innovative dual-dissociation strategy to synthesize SSPE, which would benefit the practical use of polymer electrolytes in solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

A new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte based on poly(vinyl alcohol) incorporating hypergrafted nano-silica

Xian-Lei Hu,Gao-Ming Hou,Ming-Qiu Zhang,Min-Zhi Rong,Wen-Hong Ruan,Emmanuel P. Giannelis

Solid-state nanocomposite polymer electrolytes based on poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) incorporating hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HBPAE) grafted nano-silica (denoted as SiO2-g-HBPAE) have been prepared and investigated. Through surface pretreatment of nanoparticles, followed by Michael-addition and a self-condensation process, hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) was directly polymerized from the surface of nano-silica. Then the hypergrafted nanoparticles were added to PVA matrix, and blended with lithium perchlorate via mold casting method to fabricate nanocomposite polymer electrolytes. By introducing hypergrafted nanoparticles, ionic conductivity of solid composite is improved significantly at the testing temperature. Hypergrafted nano-silica may act as solid plasticizer, promoting lithium salt dissociation in the matrix as well as improving segmental motion of matrix. In addition, tensile testing shows that such materials are soft and tough even at room temperature. From the dielectric spectra of nanocomposite polymer electrolyte as the function of temperature, it can be deduced that Arrhenius behavior appears depending on the content of hypergrafted nano-silica and concentration of lithium perchlorate. At a loading of 15 wt% hypergrafted nano-silica and 54 wt% lithium perchlorate, promising ionic conductivities of PVA nanocomposite polymer electrolyte are achieved, about 1.51 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C and 1.36 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 100 °C.

Junnian Chen,Tianyou Peng,Ke Fan,Renjie Li,Jiangbin Xia

An efficient plastic crystal-based electrolyte is prepared by employing succinonitrile as solid solvent and binary ionic liquids as charge transfer mediators for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It was found that combining succinonitrile with ionic liquids could improve the mechanical property of electrolyte and avoid the fluidity of ionic liquid, and the fabricated solid-state solar cell shows an overall conversion efficiency of 2.14%, which can be further improved to 5.50% after optimizing the addition amount of lithium perchlorate (LiClO 4 ) as charge transfer promoter into the plastic crystal electrolyte, and the role of LiClO 4 in the plastic crystal ionic liquid electrolyte is evaluated through electrochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements. The knowledge obtained from this plastic crystal-based electrolyte exhibits new eyeshot to find solid-state electrolyte for DSSCs with high performance.

Non-Isocyanate Polyurethanes by Alcoholysis of Alkyl Bisurea with Li Salt-Assisted Melting: Synthesis and Properties

Yiyin Yang,Kangzhou Xie,Donglin Tang

Alcoholysis of bisureas (BUs) would be of great potential among the non-isocyanate routes for preparing polyurethanes, if the issue of the high melting temperature and the poor solubility for BUs can be solved. In this study, it is proposed to introduce Li salt to assist the melting of BUs via a eutectic system. It is found that the melting point of BUs indeed can be reduced to 170 °C or even lower by adding 40 mol% of LiCl or LiBr. In the polymerizations of BUs with diols, it is found that ZnO nanoparticles (30 ± 10 nm) are the most efficient catalyst in the catalyst screening study. Four polyurethanes are successfully synthesized and the glass transition temperature of them is detected to be 34–45 °C. PU1010 is tougher than other polymers so that it is able to be molded. The Young's modulus of PU1010 is 195.1 MPa, while the strength and the elongation at break are 36.4 MPa and 280%, respectively. The toughness calculated is 67.3 J cm −3 . This Li salt-assisted melting strategy not only realizes the synthesis of polyurethanes through alcoholysis of BUs, but can also be extended to the synthesis of other high performance polymers.

Synergistic effect of lithium salt and trimethyl phosphate for enhanced interface stability in solid-state lithium metal batteries

Yali Liu,Wenqiang Hou,Kai Zhang,Jintao Zhang,Xiangdong Ding,Youlong Xu

Polymer electrolytes hold significant potential in solid-state battery applications due to their high flexibility and scalable manufacturing capabilities. However, it is still necessary to address the safety problems and poor rate performance. Herein, the synergistic effect of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB) in the in-situ fabricated poly-butyl acrylate (PBA) quasi-solid electrolyte (QSE) is investigated. The non-flammable additive, TMP, has proven to combine with LiDFOB in the electrolytes as TMP-DFOB − pair. The TMP-DFOB − pair can promote the formation of a B–O, B–F, LiF, and Li 3 P containing solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium anode, enabling stable lithium striping-plating processes. Besides, it enhances the formation of a LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and promotes intimate contact between the cathode active materials and PBA-QSE, thereby enhancing the rate performance. Therefore, the Li/PBA-LiDFOB-0.1TMP/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell delivers discharge capacity of 132 mAh g −1 with a remarkable capacity retention of 95.68 % after 500 cycles at 1 C. Even at 4 C, the discharge capacity reaches 92.1 mAh g −1 . This non-flammable PBA-LiDFOB-TMP QSE exhibits potential application in high energy density systems. Furthermore, this work provides new insights into strategies for improving rate performance from lithium salts and functional additives aspects.
