Alloying-type anodes including Si- and Sn-based materials are considered the most exploitable anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. However, problems of poor kinetics properties and structural failures such as grain pulverization and coarsening hinder their large-scale application. Herein, SnO2/Si@graphite hybrid anodes, with nano-SnO2 and nano-Si thoroughly mixed with each other and loaded onto graphite flakes, have been prepared by a facile ball milling method. Attributed to the “synergistic effect” between SnO2 and Si, the mechanical stability and kinetics properties can be remarkably enhanced. Furthermore, graphite substrate supplies a fast electrically conductive path and buffers the volume expansion of active particles. Accordingly, SnO2/Si@graphite delivers 798.9 mAh g–1 at 200 mA g–1 and maintains 550.8 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g–1 in half cells. Impressively, a high energy density of 431.4 Wh kg–1 (based on the mass of anode and cathode) can be obtained in full cells when paired with the NCM622 cathode. This work presents an effective strategy to exploit high-performance alloying-type anodes for LIBs by designing hybrid materials with multiple active components.

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) has attracted great interest as an anode material due to the "zero strain" during Li+ insertion and extraction. But the intrinsic ionic diffusion coefficient and electronic conductivity are very poor. Herein, a strategy of Mg2+ and Zr4+ co-doping has been proposed to modulate the crystal structure and improve the electrochemical performances. More importantly, the synergic roles of Mg/Zr co-doping has been unveiled based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction, Neutron powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. Firstly, Mg-Zr co-doping expands the lattice parameter, cell unit volume and even Li-O bond length, which reduces Li+ migration barrier and benefits to Li+ insertion/extraction. Secondly, Ti-O shrinkage induced by Mg-Zr co-doping enhances the structure stability and subsequently the cycle performance. Thirdly, Mg-Zr co-doping promotes more Ti4+/Ti3+ which facilitates electron conductivity. Moreover, Mg-Zr co-doping also decreases the polarization and charge transfer impedance. Li3.8Mg0.2Ti4.9Zr0.1O12 delivers a discharge capacity of 180.5, 150.7, 110.4 and 78.9 mAh/g at 0.2C, 1C, 5C and 10C, respectively. Moreover, the capacity retention is greatly increased from 57.9% of LTO to 98.59% at 10C after 500 cycles.

In this study, we have demonstrated coordination-driven self-assembly between Fe3O4 and graphene sheets under a hydrothermal condition for the simple in situ synthesis of a 3D Fe3O4–graphene hybrid architecture (Fe3O4/G). Fine hierarchical Fe3O4 spheres were homogeneously dispersed and embedded in an interconnected mesoporous framework of graphene sheets. It can be noted that the critical concentration of GO assembly decreased dramatically during the self-assembly of Fe3O4, indicating the coordination-driven self-assembly between Fe3O4 and GO. When evaluated as an anode material for LIBs, the Fe3O4/G hybrid framework demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 1164 mA h g−1 over 500 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g−1 and a remarkable rate capability. The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to a strong adhesion force and synergistic effect between Fe3O4 and graphene sheets as well as formation of a 3D interconnected hybrid framework, which offers enhanced kinetics towards electrochemical reactions with lithium ions and provides space for alleviating the huge volume expansion that occurs during charge–discharge cycles.

The recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been dogged by air pollutants containing fluoride (e.g. HF, PF 5 , POF 3 ). Pyrolysis is a technique that can eliminate polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) from the cathode electrode sheets of spent LIBs, effectively separating the cathode material from the aluminum (Al) foil. Nonetheless, the HF gas generated during pyrolysis not only corrodes equipment but also presents serious environmental risks. To address this, a novel, eco-friendly strategy is introduced for the direct upgrading of cathode active materials (CAM). The strategy's cornerstone involves incorporating a minor amount of calcium into the original cathode material's coating, and it leverages mechanical stirring during the waste battery material separation process to ensure the electrode is fully detached from the current collector at a reduced temperature. The pyrolysis mechanism elucidates that fluorine-containing organic pollutants are converted into metal fluorides and deposited on the surface of cathode particles during aerobic pyrolysis, thereby improving the interfacial stability of lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) materials, reducing transition metal dissolution. This strategy not only eliminates the release of fluorine-containing organic pollutants during pyrolysis but also achieves direct regeneration of CAM. This work underscores the importance of the cathode materials' manufacturing process in facilitating the recycling of spent LIBs and provides an environmentally friendly and economically viable solution for the battery recycling industry.

The proliferation of vehicles and portable devices has led to a significant increase in the number of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Recycling these spent LIBs is crucial to prevent negative environmental impacts and resource wastage. However, traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods suffer from inherent drawbacks as being time-consuming, energy-intensive and causing secondary pollution. Herein, an innovative approach is proposed to direct regenerate degraded LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NCM111) in-situ by combining hydrothermal treatment with solid-state sintering. Structural and morphology characterizations reveal that the amorphous layer near the surface of degraded NCM111 (D-NCM111) are dissolved after the hydrothermal treatment, restoring the original layered structure due to the relithiation reaction, whereas the target stoichiometric ratios of transition metal elements are achieved through the solid-state sintering process. The regenerated NCM111 (R-NCM111) exhibits a high discharge specific capacity of 152.3 mAh/g at 0.1 C and a capacity retention of 96.1% at 1 C after 300 cycles. The recycling method presented in this work is not only facile but also scalable, potentially opening a new pathway to address the environmental challenges posed by massive spent LIBs.

High-capacity conversion-type anodes with high volume expansion and low conductivity face limitations in meeting the high energy density demands of lithium-ion batteries. Herein, MOF-derived CoSe2/ZnSe bimetallic selenide nanoparticles are confined in layered Ti3C2Tx MXene (CoSe2/ZnSe@MX) as electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries by in-situ self-assembly and selenization strategy. The interconnected conductive MXene networks not only can provide highways for charge transfer, but also can effectively accommodate the large volume expansion, improving the structural stability. Meanwhile, the bimetallic CoSe2/ZnSe nanoparticles with heterostructures and Se vacancies offer abundant redox reaction sites, promote Li-ions diffusion, and enhance Li-ions adsorption. Thus, the CoSe2/ZnSe@MX electrodes exhibit a remarkable capacity of 830.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, high-rate capability of 290.8 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1, and superior cycling stability with 63.1% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. Furthermore, the full cell was demonstrated practical applicability with a high capacity of 156 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C. This facile technique is promising to construct high-performance energy storage devices.

Research into new composites to enhance the performance of lithium-ion battery electrode materials has become a trendy area of study. Cobalt-based composites are particularly prominent due to their exceptional electrochemical performance and unique physicochemical properties. Additionally, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes materials are anticipated to replace graphene and other carbonaceous materials since they possess an open structure and low lithium-ion diffusion barrier. In this work, we employed simple hydrothermal method to combine layered Ti 3 C 2 T x with needle-shaped CoOHF. The resulting nanosheets showed an even dispersion of CoOHF in the surface, leading to a remarkable increase in specific capacity. Furthermore, Ti 3 C 2 T x provided a higher number of lithium-ion active sites and improved the lithium-ion migration rate, while also ensuring the structure and stability of CoOHF. This composite material enables stable cycling for 1000 cycles at high current densities of 2 A g −1 and ultimately shows a large capacity of 802.4 mAh g −1 stably. Additionally, CoOHF/MXene composites display exceptional performance rate and cycling stability. This study highlights new feasible strategies for using multilayer Ti 3 C 2 T x in lithium-ion batteries, along with metal hydroxyfluorides in new, highly efficient lithium-ion battery anode materials.

Graphical On the ball : The high charge/discharge voltage (1.65 V), long life span, and excellent reversibility of TiNb 2 O 7 have led to its use as an anode for lithium ion batteries. In order to overcome its inherent poor electronic conductivity, it is herein formed as hollow spheres, and coated with carbon, resulting in a much-improved anode performance. TiNb 2 O 7 , with high charge/discharge voltage (1.65 V), long life span, and excellent reversibility has become a new anode material for lithium ion batteries in recent years. However, the inherent poor electronic conductivity strictly limits its practical applications. Herein, we report for the first time hollow TiNb 2 O 7 @C spheres, with carbon spheres as sacrificial template. The special hollow structure can effectively relieve the volume expansion during the repeated process of charging/discharging. The conductivity of hollow TiNb 2 O 7 spheres can be greatly improved by the carbon layers uniformly coated outside the surface of TiNb 2 O 7 spheres. Besides, the particle aggregation can be conspicuously suppressed by the uniformly coated carbon layers. As a result, hollow TiNb 2 O 7 @C spheres show a prominent charge/discharge capacity of 282.6/283.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.25 C (1 C=388 mA g −1 ), revealing the excellent cycle performance and high reversible capacity. Meanwhile, the charge/discharge capacity of 157.5 and 157.9 mAh g −1 can be maintained at 10 C after 10 cycles. The facial synthetic method can be extended to prepare various materials with volume expansion during repeated charging/discharging process.

Si is one of the most attractive anode materials because of its extremely high theoretical capacity. In this study, we find that the (111) plane of crystalline Si in the anode is still present after 100 cycles and infer that it is the intercalation site of Li + ions. We believe that Li + ions are inserted into the tetrahedral sites of crystalline Si, and the (111) plane of Si collapses; meanwhile, expansion parallel to 〈220〉 crystal orientation occurs. After full lithiation , the crystalline Si is converted to amorphous silicon . In a Si/ composite anode, although the addition of amorphous carbon may improve the cycling performance of Si anode, the activation process is prolonged as the amount of amorphous carbon increased. We determine that amorphous carbon may reduce the diffusion of Li + , which increases the overpotential and results in the lower formation of the saturated Li/Si alloy.

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) contain a significant amount of valuable metals, representing a precious secondary resource. Solvent extraction is an effective method for recovering valuable metal ions from these batteries. This study proposes the use of a traditional extractant, Cyanex 272, combined with the ionic liquid Cyphos IL 101, to extract and recover leachate from lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ) batteries. With an organic-to-aqueous (O/A) phase ratio of 1:1 and a temperature of 25 °C, 97.12 % of Co was extracted, only 2.37 % of Li were co-extracted. The separation factor of Co and Li ( β Co/Li ) was 1390.1. Stripping was accomplished using pure water, achieving nearly 100 % efficiency, with the extractant demonstrating excellent recyclability and stability. Due to the low viscosity of the organic phase, the extraction system exhibits excellent performance even at room temperature (25 °C), eliminating the need for additional heat input. Using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), it was confirmed that a tetrahedral Co-Cyanex 272 complex is generated during the cobalt extraction process, following a cation exchange mechanism. Concurrently, Cyphos IL 101 facilitates the extraction of Co 2 + by transferring them as [CoCl 4 ] 2− complexes from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. The novel extraction system reduces raw material costs for recycling spent lithium cobalt oxide batteries. This research highlights the feasibility of solvent extraction methods for processing spent LIBs, offering an efficient approach to recover lithium cobalt oxide batteries.

The global lithium-ion battery recycling market is witnessing rapid growth considering the limited mineral resources and environmental sustainability. However, the conventional destructive recycling technology, mainly referred as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, cannot show obvious advantages in the recovering of low-value cathode (i.e. LiMn 2 O 4, abbreviated as LMO), either judged from the perspective of environment or economy. Herein, we develop a facile and cost-effective chemical lithiation strategy to direct regenerate spent LMO cathode, and further investigate the efficacy of our technology for industrial-scale applications. Pyrene-Li compound, a highly reductive reagent capable of donating both e − and Li + , is adopted as the chemical lithiation agent to heal the Li deficiency in the degraded LMO cathode. Both the Li-deficient LMO model compounds prepared from acid delithiation method and the real degraded LMO harvested from commercial cells can be restored as original with comparable long-term stability as the pristine LMO cathode and even superior rate capability. Life-cycle analysis demonstrates that our approach is superior to conventional metallurgies because of its high economic profitability (2.78 $/kg cell) and minimal environmental impact (527 g GHG /kg cell), thus providing a brand new perspective for the recycling of low-value cathodes.
